Aquilausa stocks nylgut and ships from Portland Oregon. Definitely in the us.

If one wants to try silk strings, they're available on etsy:

The longevity of silk strings might outweigh the costs.

(It is said that silk reaches its optimum tone after years.)

One string seems to be long enough for one course.

Thanks to all who responded - as I live in France, I was asking on 
someone else's behalf, hoping that (particularly in the case of nylgut) 
that there might be someone who stocks these strings in the US and 
therefore avoiding the postal costs of importing from Europe.  It looks 
as though Cuerdas pulsadas is the best online source, and anyone in the 
US will just have to pay the postal charges...

Gamut sells gut and nylon but not nylgut strings.
