   Hi David,

We very much appreciate your interest, and your knowledge base. I
second your conclusion that this should be taken up by the LSA as
opposed to an individual. However, the LSA relies heavily on
individuals who are willing and have the time to serve the wider lute
community by applying a skill set they already have to needs the LSA
has. If you are open to being involved in the LSA in this way, do stay
in the conversation! This isn't a job description just yet. It's
guidance we might need at the moment, I would think.

In Mudarra's third book of Tres Libros there are a couple of pieces

Could the Eysert red notes be similar in intent? (Would the player be

Hello Wayne,

Thank you very much indeed for the lute list. It has been extremely
beneficial to a great many people. It has helped us learn all sorts of
things about the lute and its music, share our knowledge with others, and
make friends with people all over the world. You have created something
valuable, which I hope will continue somehow after you have left Dartmouth
College. Good luck in your forthcoming retirement.

A reeally *BIG* thank you also from my side, Wayne.

When in 2005 I decided that it was about time to get back to my lute

Now, 15 years later I've finished my MA in Baroque lute at the

 Hi everyone,
First, thanks to Wayne for creating this forum and maintaining it for
such a long time - chapeau.
It seems appropriate that we collectively try to find a new home
   ground
for sharing information and listing our lutes for sale.
One simple and straight forward solution might be just to set up a
closed, invite only group on Facebook. It would allow us to kill
   those
two birds with one stone (sharing information/listing lutes for
   sale).
I am happy to set up the group and share a link for people to join if
you're all interested? The only issue is getting a critical mass of
 people to join.
Another solution is to... try to find another solution like a more
traditional webpage forum. I don't have expertise in this area
 however.
 Thoughts?
 Cheers,
 Jay

[LUTE] Re: The lute list is retiring soon

2020-08-23 Thread Luke Emmet
Thanks Wayne for all your energies and efforts in running these sites.
It is really appreciated!

On a personal note, I'd like to express a particular appreciation for
the TAB software which sits within, and dovetails to my own open source
lute tabulature software LuteScribe. TAB source is in github, so should
remain accessible for many years to come.

Possibly the email list could be migrated to a Google group (free) -
they are quite easy to set up, but do need an admin to occasionally free
up a blocked message and to admit new users (or it could be auto-join).

As previously mentioned, there is an archive of the current list already
here:

https://www.mail-archive.com/lute@cs.dartmouth.edu/

To my mind the pages about TAB and the downloadable music archive
associated with it is of great importance and should also be preserved.

Best Wishes

 - Luke

Hi -

I am sure I joined the list in 1995 or 1996. Your are getting old:)

I am probably one of the oldest members on the list - regarding membership, not
my age :)

Arto must have joined before me, Caroline Usher used to be very active and the
older members will remember those wonderful flame wars between Arthur Ness and
a certain person whose name I will not tell you - he has died 1 or 2 years ago.
I think he was the only member that was expelled from the list.

20 years ago the was much higher traffic but loosing the list would be horrible.

By the way, Wayne, what will become of the updates for tab.

Regarding the mailing list we might have a simple free solution.

The newsgroup rec.music.early still exists and there is almost no traffic.

There are free newsgroup servers with mild limitations.
For example nntp.aioe.org does not allow more than 40 [forty] postings per day
from the same IP address. This should be enough for everybody - even Tristan :)

I have posted a test message a few minutes ago and it appeared a few seconds
later.

Configuring a mail client for newsgroups is very easy and takes a few seconds.

Of course, non-lute readers of rec.music.early might complain.
However, the last postings were:

Download Solution Manual Fundamentals of Gas Dynamics (apparently the wrong
newsgroup)

4 postings "Francesco da Milano: Ness 28 = Chiesa number?" this would fit our
list

1 posting regarding recorders.

1 test posting by a certain Rainer

Since apparently there are less than 3 [three] postings per month I don't think
capturing the list would cause severe problems.

For people who have no experience with newsgroups:

You do not have to register.

They are not monitored (depending on server and list)

Attachments are not allowed (at least not on this list)

What do the "expert" think?

Spammers would indeed be something that would need to be managed on
Facebook. Daniel's suggestion to use [1]http://lutegroup.ning.com/ is
probably a better alternative as a forum - it would be much better to
go to a page where topics are logically set out and easy to navigate
rather than a bunch of email spam or an unordered list on Facebook.
Facebook would be a better place for listing things for sale however,
insofar as it would be more accessible to more people - I'd never heard

use it. I don't know the last day yet, but I will make an announcement when my
 list actually closes.

[LUTE] Re: Keeping the lutes for sale page/lute forum going

2020-08-23 Thread Martyn Hodgson
   Dear Jay,
I think the problem with Facebook (and similar) is the usual one of
these social media led apps and, indeed, of a traditional webpage -
security. The advantage of email like the existing Lutelist is that
it's largely immune from such machinations. I really don't want to see
ads etc scrolling down the page.
   regards

I don't have expertise in this area
 however.
 Thoughts?
 Cheers,
 Jay

   Dear Wayne,
Sad news indeed - I wonder if one of the national lute societies might
host the site? - it is a wonderful facility and it would be a great
shame for it to be lost.
And, of course, many grateful thanks for your kind service to our
   fragmented community over the years

2020-08-23 Thread Martyn Hodgson
   Dear Daniel,
It would indeed be very good if you could at least host the archive and
thank you for the Ning site - this can be a substitute if the Lute list
cannot be saved in its present (or similar) form by some kind person -
   or persons.

 1) I add to the chorus of thanks and well wishing. I've bought and

a few instruments on your site.
 2) What will be the status of the mail list archive
 at [1][1]https://www.mail-archive.com/lute@cs.dartmouth.edu/ ? This
   is
really a fantastic resource and I go there often to search topics
rather than posting them anew. Would it be possible to at least host
that archive somewhere? I do own a few domains and sites with spare
   GB
and I could store it if I was shown how.
 3) I think it would be ideal if this list could continue and I feel
it's complementary to the others out there including Facebook, Reddit
and the Ning Lutegroup. If nobody is able to step forward by the end
   of
the month, especially if the technology is too retro, some of the
   same
functionality is available on the Ning site at
[2]lutegroup.ning.com both in the forum discussions and the lutes for
sale section. The disadvantages that come to mind of the Ning group
compared to a mail list include a) need to sign up (although it is
free) b) forum messages are not "pushed" into people's mailboxes,
   they
have to come to the site and search them out c) we have had
   challenges
the last couple years with the functionality of the site and parts of
it not working, but that has vastly improved the last few months.
   Their
3.0 version was more expensive but now they are offering it to me at
the same price so I might be able to make it more slick. d) because
   you
have to join, you can't just send people to the lutes for sale page
without them signing up which they may not want to be bothered to do.
Again, with the 3.0 update I may be able to make that individual
   forum
open to non members to read.
Advantages of the Ning site: a) you can include attachments including
pictures and embed videos from youtube and vimeo b) there is
moderation, and the few spammers that sneak through the challenge
questions get their accounts and all their posts deleted with one
   click
In any case, I started by saying it would be great to keep the mail
list and lute for sale pages open but if that's not possible there
   are
 fall back positions.
