I have nice digital copies of the first suite in Giononcelli’s ms. I
don’t know where I got them. They are much better than my 40 year old
faded photocopies. [1]imslp.org is not helpful in this case. I must
have downloaded them from somewhere, but I cannot find where. Anyone?

   Subject: [LUTE] Mandora/Gallichon website
   Dear Lute-List,
I'm going to set up a website about the 18th century mandora/gallichon.
This might be a place for general information about the instrument(s),
its history, where it has been played, composers, and, and, and.but
also information about where to find a player, a lutemaker, and last
but not least a download page for lots of pieces.
Those who already know a bit about 18th century mandora music: don't be
afraid! I'm not going to present hundreds of bad and boaring menuets
there. Amongst all the manuscripts which I have (quite a lot, in copy
   of
course) I've found many interesting pieces, technically not to much
demanding, often with nice melodies, and sometimes music of high
quality in baroque or gallant style.
During the last years I've made a collection of my favorite pieces and
suites, and I made readable copies of it with Fronimo. Probably other
mandora players did the same. So why not putting together the whole
mandora wisdom and repertoire and collect it in the web, downloadable
for free and open to all.
That's quite a lot of work of which I've already done a bit. Therefore
I would like to ask the mandora players of amongst us (I know there are
some) to participate to this idea, and to contribute whatever
   might be of interest.
You can have a look to this very basic website with just an index-page,
a completely empty "about Mandora"-page and the impressum (which is
   obligatory in Germany).
   The web adress is: [2]www.gallichon.de
But some buttons are already there, and so at least you can see which
themes I have integrated until now. But that's just work in progress,
and to be filled with real information soon. If you have any suggestion
about what else should be there, if you have any material to share,
don't hesitate to contact me. The website shall be in english and
german. As you certainly have seen I'm not a native speaker. Any help
in transforming my poor english into something closer to good english
   is welcome.
   Let's try it.

There's no reason why the third finger should not be held on the belly
   - rather than the more conventional fourth. Indeed, some historical
players (Kapsberger comes to mind) are recorded as only plucking with
the thumb, first and second fingers.
Further, it's not wholly unlikely that the painting shows a model who
may not have had much, if any, real instruction on how to play the
instrument - how many modern depictions of lutes (in ads etc) depict
unlikely postures which are accepted by the general public (eg a
current UK Building society TV ad) and even, amazingly, a print ad for
a manufacturer of thirteen course and other lutes being played in what
appears to be an unconventional manner

Any links to tabs, manuscripts or YouTube vids you can suggest?
   Lynda Kraar

   Hi Linda,

There are two websites I always come back to:

   Sarge Gerbode's

   [1]www.gerbode.net

   Just read the introduction...

If you come to a subdirectory with many entries like this one for
   example

   [2]http://www.gerbode.net/sources/Casteliono/intabolatura_di_leuto_1536
   /

just scroll down to the folder "pdf" which will contain all the pieces
   in pdf format.
As far as the ".ft3" files are concerned, they are produced with a
   tablature editor program called "Fronimo".
You can install that program for free which will give you the
opportunity to view and print (!) the music, though without the
   possibility of editing it.

   And I recommend:

   [3]https://lutesocietyofamerica.wildapricot.org/Tab-Facsimiles

This page links to digital facsimilia of lute sources. Very nice, can
be hard to read if it's a manuscript :-)

   **
A good and developing data base for searching manuscripts ist

   [4]http://mss.slweiss.de

As the name suggests, it all started with baroque lute sources, but now
more and more earlier stuff is added by the brave Peter Steur. Online
   ressources are marked.

   Best wishes
   Bernd

I am working on a piece in Miguel Serdoura’s Method for Baroque Lute
and am trying to find the manuscript it is from.
In his edition, he references CZ-Pa Ms. Prunières and that it is by
   Dubut (le père).
I have done some looking for this but cannot find the manuscript in the
Praha, Státnà ArchÃv or anywhere else.
Anyone have a suggestion where I might find the source for this?

I wonder what happens if one orders something now.
Some years ago I did. As you know I think that the CNRS is a sort of

fruitless. No response. Then suddenly, after 10 months, the parcel
came: excessively covered with stamps and seals: "Urgent! Air Mail! By

parcels contents - but I was never charged :-) So, good luck!

   Thank you.
In the middle of the third line, on the first course, there
are two adjacent tablature letters of unfamiliar shape.
The first resembles a 'p' with a long straight tail. And the
second resembles a 'p' with a hooked tail. Can someone identify
these two letters for me? Are they 'f' and 'h'?
Are these shapes standard for that time and place? Or are
they an idiosyncrasy of the writer?

About three weeks ago I posted a link to my scribd site where I
occasionally upload my own amateur intabulations/transcriptions of lute
and guitar music, the latest addition being Sonata No. VII in d-minor
   from op.5 by Corelli, a 1:1 intabulation of a B.C. realisation for
classical guitar. For that same reason it lacks low basses, and the
melody part (for violin) is missing too, but can be found on IMSLP. See
my other post from 2nd June for a link. I'm not sure anymore but I
think I've played it with my girlfriend on alto recorder and in general
it worked for her, and the Continuo may be guitar-style but isnice
and not hard to play on lute, IMHO. I just wonder why noone reacted to
my previous mail... my efforts may be dilettantic but are they that
   bad? :)

Apart from that I've done tabs for the B.C. of a few other single
movements by different Composers, all 4 movements from Haendel Sonata
op. 1/5 in a-minor (I still have printouts of that, which I could scan,
but lost the Cripps tab source due to a disk crash), and De Visee
(Suite d-minor from the melody/B.C. version starting at p. 45 in the
1686 book). If you're interested in these, mail me privately and I'll
see how to pass them on to you, if needed I can scan the melody parts.

and there are more birds in Gallot's oeuvre (all for baroque lute)!
There is still another (turtle) dove, a storch...and not to forget La
poussiniere - which is a sort of stable for chicks, I believe.
For renaissance lute there is the famous Le Rossignol duo which
should be very easy to play also on 2 guitars.
   Another rossignol: Le rossignol (R. de Lassus), F-VE 711, 103; PL-Kj

   The bird's song: Reveillez vous (Cl. Janequin), D-DO G I 4, 124; D-Mbs
   267, 32; D-Mbs 268 1; D-Mbs 269, 1; D-Mbs 271, 14
And a rooster: Le Coq, CZ-Pu II.Kk.49, 45(this is for baroque lute, I
   presume)

   Happy fluttering!

   Hi Martyn,
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you, but possibly more intrigue.
In the Gruesau RM 4141 for 13-course lute (which I recently downloaded
via a link provided here on the list) there is a curious symbol above
numerous chords made up of varying numbers of notes. Most of these look
like a 2. I thought they could possibly be rhythmic symbols, but they
look just like the 2 found on page numbers and elsewhere in the
manuscript, standard rhythmic signs are written over chords that are
probably arpeggiated. On p.5, there are is also a 3 and a 4,
written over chords made up of between 4 and 6 notes. Like Martyn, I
think the numbers might indicate some types of arpeggio patterns, but I
can't relate them to any practice with which I'm familiar on baroque
   lute. Anyone have insights?

In a recent message I added the
following postscript. Has anyone any views on the matter?
PS On another possible Bartolotti matter altogether. Quite
a few years ago I posted a message about one of the
theorbo pieces found at the end of NB Wien 17.706 -
possibly by Bartolotti since the MS contains a number of
theorbo solos ascribed to Angelo Michiele (presumably our
man). On 90v, bottom system are various chords mostly three
notes, but one five, with little numbers (either a 3 or
a 2) placed under them. The music is in French tablature
with the usual way of showing the basses (ie with slashes
and then numbers 4 to 7). I had thought these 2s or 3s
might show ways of breaking each chord - but couldn't make
much sense of it. At the time no responses came!
