I'll second that! It's not difficult read both French and Italian tab and it is self defeating to turn Italian tab upside down because you may eventually have to unlearn everything you've got used to. German tab is a bit more difficult. Of lute music per se, I have only Varietie in facsimile. But for early notation I have Canti B C of Odhecaton, and numerous other copies of pages from facsimile editions. These I consider indispensable for learning to play early notation. Most of my study of lute music is done from more modern editions, I must admit. Methinks, perhaps I ought to try to rectify this. [LUTE] Re: Facsimiles
Dear Stewart, as far as Thomas Mace didactical skills are concerned, I reckon him a paragon of a teacher. And I beg to differ as regards his music, I like it at least as much as continental lute music of the 1650ies through 1670ies, and I do think it's special from a continental point of view. Much depends on the pitch, though. Once you play it with your 1st course in g', the music gets a particular flavour. You see, I'm into the baroque lute, rather. Werl, Ballard 1631 + 1638, Mace 1676. Another bag for Gaultier 1669, Gallot 1670, Lesage de Richee 1695, Mouton 1699. I hope four books per bag is okay as well. Never travel without. Mathias Stewart McCoy lu...@tiscali.co.uk schrieb: Dear Mathias, In choosing my five facsimiles I tried to look wider than just lute solos. The lute involves other things too, hence my choice of Dowland's First Booke of Songes, which I consider to be the most significant collection of lute songs of all time. I think Mace's Musick's Monument is important, not so much for his music, which is nice but not special, but for what he has to say about the lute, the theorbo and the viol. It is a pity not to have included any foreign sources, but I thought it best to stick to French tablature. Otherwise the Capirola lute book would be high on my list, along with Spinacino's two books (1507), Casteliono's Intabolatura (1536), and Newsidler's Ein Newgeordnet Künstlich Lautenbuch (1536). To make the list ten, I would add Besard's Thesaurus Harmonicus (1603). Here's my list: 1. Jane Pickering - because it has some simple toys, both parts of nice duets and a mixture of harder solos, and the handwriting is very clear with almost no mistakes 2. Marsh Manuscript - lots of 6 course music and pieces by John Johnson, who I particularly like. 3. Folger Dowland Manuscript - the music in this manuscript has clues for the answers to questions about right hand fingering (when to use thumb - index and when to use index - middle) and also which notes to ornament. 4. Bronrgyntyn - this manuscript has the best doodles of all of them. 5. The M. L. Lute Book - there is some really nice music in this manuscript, for 9 and 10 course lutes. If you want to explore the music after Dowland, there are lots of ornaments and right hand fingerings marked. And the manuscripts that I can't wait to spend more time with: Dd. 2.11 - I hope it's ready soon! Dd. 9.33 Nn.6.36 Lord Herbert of Cherbury It's pretty obvious that I love English music. Jean-Marie: I think I understand what is going on. Although the site is again open, a large majority of the music is still unavailable. Only a few of the files I tried to access actually downloaded; the rest generated a message saying that the file is still blocked. Try Attaingnant (Deux Livres d'Orgue) and see if that works for you. Well, it doesn't... I have tried to empty my internet cache. I use Mozilla and there is no way to get any of the pdf files. [LUTE] Re: Facsimiles.
There's certainly still a copyright checking issue on IMSLP. If I try downloading Tartini's (1692-1770) Devil's Trill sonata, I get the message: *You have reached this page because the file you requested has not been reviewed for copyright, or is currently restricted due to technical reasons. * A significant portion of the original IMSLP is still pending copyright review, so expect the number of blocked files to decrease dramatically in the next few months after IMSLP reopening. No such problems downloading Mars, The Bringer of War by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). (I'm also in France, Jean-Marie, so if there's a problem it's not your location). But I have a nasty feeling that Holst is still in copyright here, because they add on extra years to compensate for the war years. Thanks, Mars. Maybe I'd better wipe it out again.
