[LUTE] Re: latest blog

2018-07-09 Thread Alain Veylit
Personally I have always thought that the Early music movement owed a
lot to modern technology, particularly recording techniques and
head-phones ( as well as modern printing techniques that made facsimile
reproductions cheaper and easier to produce). That goes against the
multi-century trend towards bigger music halls, and more decibels at a
higher pitch. According to contemporary accounts, Corelli's music was
known as particularly high on decibels... Ironically the same electronic
devices that account for locating the audience on a different planet
from the musicians - because of the noise ... - also account for a
restoration of the ideal sound space for the lute: i.e. a small room.
Then, unfortunately, mp3s happened...

Thanks. I liked the photos a lot also, especially the detail of the
thumb sticking out past the index finger on every photo of a right hand
   plucking the strings.

 Thank you.
Re the significance (or not) of coloured strings: I've previously
wondered whether they might simply relate to the place where the
strings were made. This does not necessarily rule out loaded strings
being related to colour, since some places may have specialised in
producing such strings, but could explain the apparently haphazard
   use
 on upper courses etc.
