There does not seem to be much audible difference, but through my
computer, although I have attached my JBL on Tour speakers (not hifi,
of course). I hear no rumble, but that is harldy surprising.

2004-01-06 Thread Stewart McCoy
Dear Jason,

All becomes clear. Your library mentions the printer/publisher for
each book, including Jul. Paulus Fabritius Laub, who is responsible
for printing Hans Newsidler's _Das Ander Buch_. The exact phrase in
the book is Zu Nürnberg truckts. Jul. Paulus Fabritius Laub. durch
verlegung Hansen Newsidlers Lutenisten, M. D. XLIX. I'd give the
references as follows:

1) Hans Gerle, _Eyn Newes sehr Künstlichs Lautenbuch_ (Nuremberg:
Jeronimus Formschneyder, 1552); [Brown 1552(2)]

2) Hans Newsidler, _Das Ander Buch_ (Nuremberg: Jul. Paulus
Fabritius Laub, 1549); [Brown 1549(6)

3) Hans Newsidler, _Das Dritt Buch_ (Nuremberg: Hans Günther, 1544);
[Brown 1544(3)]

Information about all three books including a list of contents may
be found in H. M. Brown, _Instrumental Music Printed Before 1600_
(Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1965)

Best wishes,

Stewart.

 Hello Rainer,
I guess I do - while browsing my local music library's
German lute

Gerle is
listed as the author in the library's catalogue. Below is a paste
of the

I think this is the Cornetto facsimile edition of 3 in one.
I have the book and I can tell you that most pieces in the Gerle book are pirated from
other - Italian prints.

I think I have a complete inventory in my lute database and cans send it.

Best wishes,

Dear Jason,

I can see no reference to this book in H. M. Brown's _Instrumental

If so, please could you tell us more about the book, and how you
know what you know already.

Best wishes,

Re: Gerle

2004-01-05 Thread Daniel F Heiman
Jason:

It is not Gerle. According to HM Brown (1549sub6), this is a revised
reprint of Hans Newsidler's 1544 Das ander Buch (1544sub2). The
instructions on playing the lute seem to have been expanded a bit, and
the number of compositions included has been increased from 57 to 69. In
fact, is seems quite a stretch to call it a revision, since only a few
of the pieces are common to both books.

The Laub refers to the printer: Zu Nurnberg trukts Jul. Paulus
Fabritius Laub. durch verlegung Hansen Newsidlers Lutinisten. M.D.XLIX

Daniel Heiman
