following the sun
Ok, this is sort of a plea for help. I really need to relocate to a warmer and sunnier place in the next few months (seasonal affective disorder). I want to relocate where there is a good music community, especially for early music. So, I've been thinking/dreaming about two places: Santa Fe, New Mexico and north of San Francisco. I'm currently living in Vermont. I really can't afford the California route, but it's nice to dream and maybe I'll sleep in a winery somewhere! So, any thoughts on being a tenor and lute player in either of those areas is much appreciated. I think San Francisco has much more going on, but Santa Fe seems a bit more affordable and very nice. Thanks. Chris Schaub To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html

Re: following the sun
Chris, Santa Fe, is really a wonderful city, I believe it is the second most popular tourist distention besides San Fran. in the country. I've lived in both San Francisco, as well as Santa Fe, and there is far more going on musically in Santa Fe per capita. World famous Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe chamber music festival, the Baroque symphonia not to mention countless gigs. I played lute and guitar gigs here back in the mid 1970's for years. It seems though that the continuo gigs are taken, by a local lutinest / guitarist Brian Delay, he teaches at the Collage of Santa Fe. He tells me it really keeps him busy, and his main source of income. Santa Fe isn't cheap, but if you live somewhat of a Bohemian lifestyle you can fit in just fine, and have allot in common with most of the painters and music makers, which make up the most interesting aspect, not to mention all the rich Texans who are migrating here at an alarming rate thesedays. One word of caution, this climate is very dry, and as a result hard on lutes and guitars. Check with who ever made your lute and see if it will stay together in 20% humidity. In a recent master class here at UNM Paul O'dette told me every peg on is lute had dried out and come loose in just a day. Good luck! Donna Curry has relocated to Montana to be near some family members. I just got an email from her yesterday and she says she's finally got all her music unpacked in her new house.
