Math mode ERT problems

2005-12-03 Thread Drop Box
Hello, I'm trying to use ERT in math mode, but as soon as I hit an escape
character, it exits ERT mode.

More specifically, I'd like to second H. Peter Gumm's question (28-Oct-05).
I'm trying to make ERT for xypic, but I can't get the /_/ part of

 \ar@/^/[r]
to render properly. If I type it directly, LyX seems to insist on rendering
it as /_{/} which makes it complain. If I try to use ERT, LyX automatically
puts a \ character before the _.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

-Bob

Hopefully I can be helpful by explaining a few tricky things I discovered
about using xypic in LyX.

To prevent errors when using the @ symbol, I had to add
 \makeatother
to the preamble, in addition to the standard
 \input xy
 \xyoption{all}
You can create an xymatrix in math mode by typing \xymatrix. The resulting
matrix will be 1x1, so to enlarge it, use M-m w i and M-m c i to add
rows and columns.

Re: Math mode ERT problems

2005-12-03 Thread Drop Box
I just realized that my previous question may be unclear due to some errors
in my previous post...

ERT in mathed seems to have a few issues. One of them is that LyX
determines when to end an ERT sequence. For example, if I hit C-L (to start
ERT) and then hit the underscore character, LyX exits out of ERT mode, and
the TeX produced is \_. Although it's not relevant to my example, I often
want to be able to ERT more than just the one character. I'm currently
having issues because of the backslash that LyX adds.

Now comes my original motivation. I'm trying to use xypic in LyX. I want
to produce the following code:

 \ar@/_/[r]
By omitting the underscore, I can produce
 \ar@//[r]
by typing this literally. When I type the underscore literally, LyX
produces

 \ar@/_{/}[r]
which doesn't work. If I try to use ERT, I get
 \ar@/\_/[r]
which doesn't work because of the extra backslash.

My apologies for the double-post. I hope this clarifies things. Thanks!

Re: Math mode ERT problems

2005-12-03 Thread Drop Box
Thanks so much for the article! It is very well-written, and it answered
some of my questions, namely how to bend arrows. Unfortunately, it leaves
unanswered perhaps the most annoying issue for me: how do I center labels
over arrows?

(Arrow labels are by default are centered according to the midpoints of the
corresponding objects. If one object label is large and the other is small,
the arrow label will be off-center with respect to the midpoint of the
actual arrow.)

The article mentions this, but only in the instance of the label
intersecting the arrow, e.g. A--f--B, which is typeset as \ar[r]|-{f}.
The | character here is fine since LyX does nothing special with it.
However, if I want

  f
A-B
the code is \ar[r]^-{f} which LyX translates to
\ar[r]^{-}{f} In turn, xypic interprets this as
   -
Af-B

The only workaround I've found is adding to the preamble
\newcommand{\uc}[2]{#1^-{#2}}
\newcommand{\lc}[2]{#1_-{#2}}

and now I can get my arrow with \uc{\ar[r]}{f}.

This works, but it's far from desirable since it's a lot of extra typing and
a much uglier than it should be. It leaves me wondering why there isn't a
mechanism (that I'm aware of) to just write normal ERT in math mode.

Can anyone think of a better workaround? Thanks!

-Bob

P.S. H. Peter's article is very nice, but after all the Google searching I
did, it never came up. I wonder if there's anything that could be done to
increase its pagerank.

Re: Math mode ERT problems

2005-12-03 Thread Drop Box
Thanks so much for the article! It is very well-written, and it answered
some of my questions, namely how to bend arrows. Unfortunately, it leaves
unanswered perhaps the most annoying issue for me: how do I center labels

(Arrow labels are by default are centered according to the midpoints of the

the arrow label will be off-center with respect to the midpoint of the

The article mentions this, but only in the instance of the label

The | character here is fine since LyX does nothing special with it.
However, if I want

  f
A-B
the code is \ar[r]^-{f} which LyX translates to
\ar[r]^{-}{f} In turn, xypic interprets this as
   -
Af-B

The only workaround I've found is adding to the preamble
\newcommand{\uc}[2]{#1^-{#2}}
\newcommand{\lc}[2]{#1_-{#2}}

and now I can get my arrow with \uc{\ar[r]}{f}.

This works, but it's far from desirable since it's a lot of extra typing and
a much uglier than it should be. It leaves me wondering why there isn't a
mechanism (that I'm aware of) to just write normal ERT in math mode.

Can anyone think of a better workaround? Thanks!

 \input xy
 \xyoption{all}
You can create an xymatrix in math mode by typing \xymatrix. The resulting
matrix will be 1x1, so to enlarge it, use "M-m w i" and "M-m c i" to add
rows and columns.

ERT) and then hit the underscore character, LyX exits out of ERT mode, and
the TeX produced is "\_". Although it's not relevant to my example, I often
want to be able to ERT more than just the one character. I'm currently
having issues because of the backslash that LyX adds.

Now comes my original motivation. I'm trying to use xypic in LyX. I want
to produce the following code:

 \ar@/_/[r]
By omitting the underscore, I can produce
 \ar@//[r]
by typing this literally. When I type the underscore literally, LyX
produces

 \ar@/_{/}[r]
which doesn't work. If I try to use ERT, I get
 \ar@/\_/[r]
which doesn't work because of the extra backslash.

My apologies for the double-post. I hope this clarifies things. Thanks!

If you remove the corresponding entries from the toplevel .pro
the compilation erroes can be avoided.

And yes, this speeds up compilation enormously.

The comand is correct. What is your document output type? If you
generate a PDF using Export/View -> PDF(pdflatex) it should work.

It seems that your working directory/folder where LyX saves the
converted files don't have write permissions. Could that be?
If you are using LyX under windows version 1.3.5 or older, please assure
that the LyX folders have write permissions for "Everybody".

IIRC hyperref only works with pdflatex export route.

Try that and it should work.
