Help regarding lyx
Dear Sir I am using lyx from last 2 months. I found It is very useful for report writing. I have few doubts about it. Could you please clear it? 1. Recently I loaded Lyx 1.3.7. In that it is not showing pdf viewer. The error is No information for viewing pdf. 2. In the figure caption I want lyx to write FIG instead of Figure before the capion starts. 3.Suppose I have started to write a report in lyx. On the first page of lyx I want the page No. of 23. How can I do this? Waiting for your reply. I was thinking if statistics were kept on yum install foo downloads (not who did it) that the frequency of download would be an objective measure. Maybe that would only work if both similar programs started in extras. It is not easy to explain, some of the reasons are historical, and the border between Core and Extras is becoming blurred (and this is good). The goal for upcoming versions is for the Extras to be included in the installation process. That will mean a support for installing either from the network or from supplementary cd's or dvd's. Things are improving a lot and I like the way it is coming. :-) I gave the Chris Karakas instructions a try, but it became hard to obtain the packages or the right versions, maybe that was on Cygwin; it was harder than following Michael Gertz instuctions! I intend to look his document after July (I am really busy now), I have several ideas how things can improve regarding lyx and docbook. I think yum or other programs like it, is the single best reason to use Linux rather than Windows. I can remember if you wanted to install a new program which would take 10 minutes, finding and installing all the dependencies could take an hour, even if they were listed beforehand and I don't think they were always listed. Maybe I should have used the word default rather than primary. :-) My final question. I was reading about fontconfig because of installing the Bakoma fonts which are in zip format into Cygwin. (This is something easy to do in Windows, install fonts.) I read there is a dependency to freetype. The freetype page mentions there is a new May31,06 version of KDE which doesn't have security problems because it uses fontconfig without freetype. Also it mentions an rpm freetype patch package suitable for using with Cygwin's rpm package. So does yum or rpm, when it installs fonts, write to those associated .conf files (fc-cache)? No idea. :-( Best regards, -- José Abílio

Referring only to debian and fedora here as the same applies to other distributions we are dealing on three levels here: package - rpm or deb package manager - yum or apt distribution- fedora or debian We need to distribution level to define common policies that make it easy to interoperate between different packages. That is what is taking time to define in Extras and it succeeded so that now Core is following the policies established in Extras. What people refer as the rpm hell was the absence of a policy so that packages could interoperate. As far as I know (the other users on the list might want to correct me if this is wrong), you cannot encapsulate graphics right into lyx or even tex files. Two alternatives: (1) when you email it, send it eg as PDF (File-Export-PDF, any of the options), (2) if you want others to change it, create a folder (e.g.) C:\MyLyxDocument\ and another folder C:\MyLyxDocument\Images\. Put your lyx file (say MyDocument.lyx) into C:\MyLyxDocument\, put the image(s) (say MyImage.gif) in the folder C:\MyLyxDocument\Images\ and when you are inserting an image (via Insert-Graphics) specify a relative path Images\MyImage.gif in the File line of the Graphics Insertion Menu. If you use relative paths like that, you simply later can create zip of the entire C:\MyLyxDocument folder and its subfolders and send it around. This kind of issue has nothing to do with LyX: It's a LaTeX matter. (The same is true of your third question, already answered by someone else.) So if you want to do this kind of customization, get a copy of /The LaTeX Companion/, which is a good guide to some of the most commonly used LaTeX packages. Try putting this in ERT at the beginning of your document: \renewcommand{\figurename}[1]{FIG #1} It seems only to work, however, with some classes: It works with book, but not with paper. It does seem to work with report, so maybe it will work for you. NOTE TO LYX MAINTAINERS: It does not work to put the above command in the preamble. I'd count that as a bug. (This is true both in 1.3.7 and in 1.4.1.) The reason seems to be that the babel package is loaded only after the rest of the preamble has been. Richard Heck
LyX/Mac 1.4.1 Not Loading Figures
Some line drawings (in eps format) which loaded just fine using LyX 1.3.4 now do not load in 1.4.1. In LyX 1.4.1 Insert Graphics gives only a graphics box that contains the (correct) name of the graphics file I'm trying to insert and the message Error converting to loadable format. (In case it's relevant, I downloaded 1.4.1 after my Mac OS had been upgraded to 10.4.5. During the upgrade, my hard drive was replaced, but the line drawings remained untouched on the university server.) Any help would be much appreciated. Bruce

I'm not a LyX maintainer, but this point has been discussed already AFAIR. babel is loaded after the preamble without arguments, so that you may load is yourself in the preamble (even with a different option than the class language option) to get your result: \usepackage{babel} \renewcommand{\figurename}[1]{FIG #1} should do it. If you want the behaviour permanently, you may change the cfg file, e.g. in frenchb.cfg: \addto\captionsfrench{\def\figurename{{\scshape Figure}}} may be changed in \addto\captionsfrench{\def\figurename{{\scshape Fig.}}} With TL 2005 (and I guess with TeteX 3), frenchb.cfg can be changed in a local dir ~/.texlive2005 -- Jean-Pierre

Re: LyX/Mac 1.4.1 Not Loading Figures
I seem to be replying to my own requests for help, not with help or a solution, unfortunately, but with new information about the problem. My apologies for not investigating for a longer time before I queried the list, but I'm hyperventilating at the thought of having to recreate all these drawings. Here's the problem, as I understand it at the moment: A manuscript (with many figures) created in LyX/Mac 1.3.4 used to launch perfectly in 1.3.4 with all the figures loading nicely. When I tried today to open that manuscript in LyX/Mac 1.4.1, none of the figures loaded: the graphics boxes either said Error in converting to loadable format or something like Not found. More detail: In a folder called Research, I have a folder called Prop6 and other folders. The Prop6 folder contains original figures (in cvs format, created using Canvas) and also figures in eps format (without preview) made from these original Canvas figures. The eps figures used to load just fine in LyX/Mac 1.3.4. Now in LyX/mac 1.4.1 these same eps figures give the message Error in converting to loadable format. Even if I take one of the original cvs figures (which are in a subfolder of the Prop6 folder), save it in eps format (without preview), I still get the same error! (Since the original cvs figures were never uploaded to the journal submission site (see below), it now seems unlikely that the journal submission uploading process has anything to do with my problem.) Figures NOT in the Prop6 folder but created in much the same way -- using Canvas to make the original, then a Save As in eps format without preview -- load perfectly in LyX/Mac 1.4.1. Could there be something in the way I did the Save As on the Prop6 figures -- some option I did or did not select -- that could be causing this? Thanks for any help the list can provide. Re: Hacking bst files... [Was: Show entry type in References]
One of the things I personally find annoying about LaTeX is the syntax, and BibTeX is even worse, frankly, but it's not that insanely complicated once you adjust to the stack-oriented character of the language. You may find it useful to keep pen and paper nearby so you can keep track of what's on the stack as you trace the code. If you haven't read it, obviously you should read btxhak.dvi, the guide to hacking BibTeX style files. It takes a while---I know---to get a sense for how the language works, and how these style files work, but it will start to make sense after a while. You should also export to LaTeX, compile the file manually, and look at what is being written to the .bbl file, when various bibliography styles are used. The labels used in the bibliography, and in the text, are set by the \bibitem command that the style file writes to the .bbl file. In many style files, this seems to be written by the output.bibitem function, which is called at the beginning of each of the functions, article, book, etc, that are called for the appropriate sorts of items. Here it is from plain.bst: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ \bibitem{ write$ cite$ write$ } write$ newline$ before.all 'output.state := } This ends up writing something like: \bibitem{Descartes:Rules} to your .bbl file. Compare this function, from alpha.bst: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ \bibitem[ write$ label write$ ]{ write$ cite$ write$ } write$ newline$ before.all 'output.state := } This writes something like: \bibitem[Des82]{Descartes:Rules} to the .bbl file, with the result that the label Des82 is used both in the text and the bibliography. Since there is no such argument to \bibitem in the previous case, the default is used: The cite key is simply a number. The variable label is what holds the value of the cite key in alpha.bst. Where was it set? You will note that it is mentioned in the ENTRY declaration, both in plain.bst and in alpha.bst, as a string variable that is associated with each item in the bibliography. This is NOT an item set in the .bib file itself---unlike author, title, etc---but rather a new variable that has been declared to be associated with each item and that can be manipulated in the .bst file. In plain.bst, the label variable is set in the function longest.label.pass: FUNCTION {longest.label.pass} { number.label int.to.str$ 'label := % number.label was initialized to 1 in initialize.longest.label % its string form is here being assigned to label number.label #1 + 'number.label := %this increments number.label label width$ longest.label.width { label 'longest.label := label width$ 'longest.label.width := } 'skip$ if$ } (I've added comments.) This function is called for each item in the bibliography with: ITERATE(longest.label.pass) which is itself called after the list has been sorted and such. If you look at alpha.bst, you will see that label is set for each item in calc.label, which is itself called in the function presort, called with ITERATE(presort). Hint: If you want to know where a variable named var is set, search for: 'var, since an assignment to var will look like: 'var :=, the assigned value being whatever is on the top of the stack. (If you see whatever 'var ;=, then the occurrence of whatever is just pushing a value onto the stack.) So the label variable exists in plain.bst, but it is not used there. But we can use it. For example, suppose we change the definition of output.bibitem in plain.bst to the following: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ \bibitem[FROG write$ label write$ ]{ write$ cite$ write$ } write$ newline$ before.all 'output.state := } Then we get cite keys like: FROG3, FROG25, etc. Your request is more complicated, because we want something different for different types of entries. But that's OK, because we have the entry type in the type$ variable, and we can just check that. The easiest thing to do would seem to be to define a new function that will print the prefix we want depending upon the entry type. This function will handle articles, incollections, and books: FUNCTION {output.prefix} { type$ incollection = type$ article = + %hack for or { Art } { type$ book = { Book } { Other } if$ } if$ } If you need to add other types, that's obviously easy to do. (There's no elsif here, so we have to use nested ifs. Exercise: Code up a switch or case statement!) We then redefine output.bibitem as follows: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ \bibitem[ write$ output.prefix write$ label write$ ]{ write$ cite$ write$ } write$ newline$ before.all 'output.state := } That should do what you need, more or less. Re: Hacking bst files... [Was: Show entry type in References]
Ares skrev: As I wrote in a previous post, I would like the references of my PhD thesis to be arranged as follows: References Articles [Art1] article1 [Art2] article2 etc Books [Book1] book1 [Book2] book2 etc etc ... LyX 1.4.1 supports sectioned bibliography, so it is possible to split the Bibliography chapter in sections. In order to have the citation as [Art1] and [Book1] etc, I need to hack a bst file, as suggested by Jürgen. I had a look to plain.bst and it doesn't sound so easy! In the end I would just like to add a prefix (Book, Art etc) to the reference numbering and to use a separate bst file for each entry (Books, Articles etc), so that the numbering starts with each section. Is there a resource where I can find how bst files work? or is there someone who can help me? Thanks for support, Diego Hi! I think that a much easier way to get a bst file than to start hack it is to use the makebst utility. (run latex makebst) Then you get a series of multiple choice question on how you want to format oyur bibliographical entries. Then two files are created, a dbj file and a bst file. The bst file is the bibliography file created. The dbj file is a batch file that is run through latex to create the bst file. If you later want to tweak the style file, this can easily be done by changing the dbj file, which is quite easy. Just comment out the option you want to change using a #, and uncomment the line with the option you prefer instead. The you just run the dbj file thorugh latex to update the bst file! You might not be able to do everything this way, but at least it is easy and it helped me a lot! /Sara

Usually a .lyx file and the suspected .eps images linked to a webpage to make a download from. Maybe you can send the files one at a time to the list and not exceed the limit the user list imposes on file attachments. I was testing the Win32 Latex version from TexLive2005 and encountered your problem. In my case it was due to a problem with the Latex installation. I will try to find the solution in order to point to the problem area on your installation. Sometimes making a minimal file will discover the problem for you. If your example file works on (our)other systems then you will know it is your environment. This may be a wrong path to the folder containing your eps files in your environment, or, they don't get copied. So make a simple file with just one or a few of the eps images and see if it works. Perhaps you don't have all the helper apps for LyX installed or one is working right. Maybe you could convert the eps image to .png and use the .png filename in your doc and try pdflatex and see if it views (or eps2pdf). Here is an example that caused me a similar problem and the fix. I'm not suggesting this is your particular problem, just an example of possible causes. Your earlier version, 1.3.4, maybe used some files that are obsolete on your newer installation, perhaps Latex, not LyX. I really think it is a good idea to try converting your eps file(s) to another image format and including that in your doc and see if it now displays. There may be a simpler solution depending on the problem, or, the solution may have a learning curve, so trying to change the image format may be the quickest. I think there is a method to use pdf and maintain (needed?) scalability. Finally, an advantage of a minimal file displaying the problem is you may be fortunate enough to have Paul Rubin scutinize it. Dan Luecking wrote: The eps to pdf conversion does fail out of the box, but that seems tobe because dvipdfm can't take PDF higher than version 1.3. One needs to change the config file so that the eps to pdf conversion process (the line beginning with D) produces version 1.3 or lower. I use D epstopdf --outfile=%o --nocompress %i in config and edit epstopdf.pl (which produces 1.4 by default on my system). Instead of editing epstopdf.pl, one could set GS_OPTIONS=-dCompatibilityLevel=1.2 on the command line or use a gs command in config that sets the level: D gswin32c.exe -q -sPAPERSIZE=letter -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.2 -dUseFlateCompression=true -dNOPAUSE -sOutputFile=%o %i -c quit (all on one line). Problems can occur out of the box because theout-of-the-box config file has incorrect quoting for windows. The config-win provided (copy it to config) uses epstopdf. Using dvipdfm's -vv option quickly showed me where the problem lied (in the pdf version produced by epstopdf). I remove quoting around the file names (%o and %i) in config's D option, and never use filenames or paths with spaces in them. - Regards, Stephen Topic ontology recapitulates entropic phylogeny.

(LyX 1.4.1, lang de, MacOS X 10.4.6) Thank's for any hints on how to get the right special characters in the menues etc., G. lyx_interface_error_de.gif Description: GIF image
upper case letter with accentuation
1) Looking at the help, I cannot find the way to type accentuated upper case letters (capital letters with accent). I just found capital A with grave accent typing Alt, ctrl, 7 then shift a. Any clue to guide me. 2) In a title, is there a way to mix character size with bolding and slanting on several lines to reproduce the way it was done on old books. I tried it using title and ctrl new line but the first line(s) are not taken into account in the final document. Thanks and regards Paul
Bruce On Jun 7, 2006, at 1:45 PM, Bruce Pourciau wrote: After more investigation, the figures that yield the conversion error (below) appear to be figures that I had previously uploaded to the submissions website of a journal. Other figures load just fine. (So this does not seem to be a 1.3.4 vs 1.4.1 problem.) Can the process of uploading a figure file in some cases have an effect on the original figure file, an effect that then prevents that figure from loading into LyX? Bruce On Jun 7, 2006, at 12:12 PM, Bruce Pourciau wrote: Some line drawings (in eps format) which loaded just fine using LyX 1.3.4 now do not load in 1.4.1. (In case it's relevant, I downloaded 1.4.1 after my Mac OS had been upgraded to 10.4.5. During the upgrade, my hard drive was replaced, but the line drawings remained untouched on the university server.) Any help would be much appreciated. Bruce
/Sara

Bruce Pourciau wrote: Thanks for any help the list can provide. Bruce Did I miss you making a minimal example file available?

It is not easy to explain, some of the reasons are historical, and the border between Core and Extras is becoming blurred (and this is good). I am sorry for the out of topic here. Note that it is unfair to compare rpm with apt/dpkg. Actually I used to manage rpms with apt. What people refer as the "rpm hell" was the absence of a policy so that packages could interoperate. As far as I know (the other users on the list might want to correct me if this is wrong), you cannot encapsulate graphics right into lyx or even tex files. Two alternatives: (1) when you email it, send it eg as PDF (File->Export->PDF, any of the options), (2) if you want others to change it, create a folder (e.g.) C:\MyLyxDocument\ and another folder C:\MyLyxDocument\Images\. Put your lyx file (say MyDocument.lyx) into C:\MyLyxDocument\, put the image(s) (say MyImage.gif) in the folder C:\MyLyxDocument\Images\ and when you are inserting an image (via Insert->Graphics) specify a relative path "Images\MyImage.gif" in the "File" line of the Graphics Insertion Menu. If you use relative paths like that, you simply later can create zip of the entire C:\MyLyxDocument folder and its subfolders and send it around. minor question: if i search for a sequence of words where an index word is inserted, it is not found. CO(indexword CO) plays an important role I searched for CO plays Same with a space between CO and indexword CO (indexword CO) plays an important role Is this intended? major question: If i index a word which should be emphasized because it is a scientific name it is shown in the Index at the begin of the index correctly emphasized but independent of its alphabetical status -which is ok. However, the names are shown according to their sequential occurrance, not according to their alphabet: indexword \emph{Xanthium} indexword \emph{Kalanchoe} indexword \emph{Arabidopsis} and now come the `normal´ indexed words . . .
In LyX 1.4.1 Insert > Graphics gives only a graphics box that contains the (correct) name of the graphics file I'm trying to insert and the message "Error converting to loadable format." (In case it's relevant, I downloaded 1.4.1 after my Mac OS had been upgraded to 10.4.5.

After more investigation, the figures that yield the conversion error (below) appear to be figures that I had previously uploaded to the submissions website of a journal. Other figures load just fine. (So this does not seem to be a 1.3.4 vs 1.4.1 problem.) Can the process of uploading a figure file in some cases have an effect on the original figure file, an effect that then prevents that figure from loading into LyX? Re: Changing lyx GUI language on MAC OS X
Well - thank's for the hint with LYX_LOCALEDIR. I set it to /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/locale in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and now I have my German userinterface. The Problem is that the interface doesn't show the right charakters for umlauts but e.g. "o instead of ö. I have a screenshot attached. upper case letter with accentuation
When I tried today to open that manuscript in LyX/Mac 1.4.1, none of the figures loaded: the graphics boxes either said "Error in converting to loadable format" or something like "Not found." More detail: In a folder called Research, I have a folder called Prop6 and other folders. The Prop6 folder contains original figures (in cvs format, created using Canvas) and also figures in eps format (without preview) made from these original Canvas figures. The eps figures used to load just fine in LyX/Mac 1.3.4. Now in LyX/mac 1.4.1 these same eps figures give the message "Error in converting to loadable format." Even if I take one of the original cvs figures (which are in a subfolder of the Prop6 folder), save it in eps format (without preview), I still get the same error!
Here it is from plain.bst: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ "\bibitem{" write$ cite$ write$ "}" write$ newline$ "" before.all 'output.state := } This ends up writing something like: \bibitem{Descartes:Rules} to your .bbl file. Compare this function, from alpha.bst: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ "\bibitem[" write$ label write$ "]{" write$ cite$ write$ "}" write$ newline$ "" before.all 'output.state := } This writes something like: \bibitem[Des82]{Descartes:Rules} to the .bbl file, with the result that the label "Des82" is used both in the text and the bibliography. Since there is no such argument to \bibitem in the previous case, the default is used: The cite key is simply a number. The variable "label" is what holds the value of the cite key in alpha.bst. Where was it set? You will note that it is mentioned in the ENTRY declaration, both in plain.bst and in alpha.bst, as a "string variable" that is associated with each item in the bibliography. This is NOT an item set in the .bib file itself---unlike author, title, etc---but rather a new variable that has been declared to be associated with each item and that can be manipulated in the .bst file. In plain.bst, the label variable is set in the function longest.label.pass: FUNCTION {longest.label.pass} { number.label int.to.str$ 'label := % number.label was initialized to 1 in initialize.longest.label % its string form is here being assigned to label number.label #1 + 'number.label := %this increments number.label label width$ longest.label.width > { label 'longest.label := label width$ 'longest.label.width := } 'skip$ if$ } (I've added comments.) This function is called for each item in the bibliography with: ITERATE(longest.label.pass) which is itself called after the list has been sorted and such. If you look at alpha.bst, you will see that label is set for each item in calc.label, which is itself called in the function presort, called with ITERATE(presort). Hint: If you want to know where a variable named "var" is set, search for: 'var, since an assignment to var will look like: 'var :=, the assigned value being whatever is on the top of the stack. (If you see whatever 'var ;=, then the occurrence of "whatever" is just pushing a value onto the stack.) So the label variable exists in plain.bst, but it is not used there. But we can use it. For example, suppose we change the definition of output.bibitem in plain.bst to the following: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ "\bibitem[FROG" write$ label write$ "]{" write$ cite$ write$ "}" write$ newline$ "" before.all 'output.state := } Then we get cite keys like: FROG3, FROG25, etc. Your request is more complicated, because we want something different for different types of entries. But that's OK, because we have the entry type in the type$ variable, and we can just check that. The easiest thing to do would seem to be to define a new function that will print the prefix we want depending upon the entry type. This function will handle articles, incollections, and books: FUNCTION {output.prefix} { type$ "incollection" = type$ "article" = + %hack for "or" { "Art" } { type$ "book" = { "Book" } { "Other" } if$ } if$ } If you need to add other types, that's obviously easy to do. (There's no elsif here, so we have to use nested ifs. Exercise: Code up a switch or case statement!) We then redefine output.bibitem as follows: FUNCTION {output.bibitem} { newline$ "\bibitem[" write$ output.prefix write$ label write$ "]{" write$ cite$ write$ "}" write$ newline$ "" before.all 'output.state := } That should do what you need, more or less. Ares skrev: As I wrote in a previous post, I would like the references of my PhD thesis to be arranged as follows: References Articles [Art1] article1 [Art2] article2 etc Books [Book1] book1 [Book2] book2 etc etc ... LyX 1.4.1 supports "sectioned bibliography", so it is possible to split the Bibliography chapter in sections. In order to have the citation as [Art1] and [Book1] etc, I need to hack a bst file, as suggested by Jürgen. I had a look to plain.bst and it doesn't sound so easy! In the end I would just like to add a prefix (Book, Art etc) to the reference numbering and to use a separate bst file for each entry (Books, Articles etc), so that the numbering starts with each "section". Just comment out the option you want to change using a "#", and uncomment the line with the option you prefer instead. The you just run the dbj file thorugh latex to update the bst file! You might not be able to do everything this way, but at least it is easy and it helped me a lot! /Sara

Bruce Pourciau wrote: Thanks for any help the list can provide. Bruce Did I miss you making a minimal example file available? Dan Luecking wrote: "The eps to pdf conversion does fail out of the box, but that seems tobe because dvipdfm can't take PDF higher than version 1.3. One needs to change the config file so that the eps to pdf conversion process (the line beginning with D) produces version 1.3 or lower. I use D "epstopdf --outfile=%o --nocompress %i" in config and edit epstopdf.pl (which produces 1.4 by default on my system). Instead of editing epstopdf.pl, one could set GS_OPTIONS=-dCompatibilityLevel=1.2 on the command line or use a gs command in config that sets the level: D "gswin32c.exe -q -sPAPERSIZE=letter -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.2 -dUseFlateCompression=true -dNOPAUSE -sOutputFile=%o %i -c quit" (all on one line). Problems can occur "out of the box" because theout-of-the-box config file has incorrect quoting for windows. The config-win provided (copy it to config) uses epstopdf. Using dvipdfm's -vv option quickly showed me where the problem lied (in the pdf version produced by epstopdf). I remove quoting around the file names (%o and %i) in config's D option, and never use filenames or paths with spaces in them." - Regards, Stephen Topic ontology recapitulates entropic phylogeny.
