Differences using beamer class in lyx-1.5.2 versus lyx-1.4.x

Hello lyxers

Yesterday I updated from lyx-1.4.x to lyx-1.5.2 and first of all I would like to
thank to developers for such a great software. 

The first try I did when testing the new version was to load a beamer
presentation I was working on. The first thing I got was a bunch of errors in
the Lyx: latex Errors window, something like this:

Latex Error: \begin{center} on input 211 ended by [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Extra }, or forgotten \endgroup
You can't use '\prevdepth' in horizontal mode
Missing $ Inserted,
Missing number, treated as zero.



I finally managed to compile the document by moving to a new paragraph all lyx
notes and branches that were inlined within the text. What worries me is that I
have many presentations made in the past that I frequently use and I expect that
the same problem can appear. Has anybody experienced the same problem or similar
ones?

Another notorius difference is the new font selection mechanism. In lyx-1.4.x I
selected the fonts of the document to Times. Now the new font selection window
it says Default Family: Default and Roman: Times Roman. The problem is twofold

- the generated pdf embbeds type 3 fonts (bitmapped)
- the look of the fonts is quite different

Why lyx-1.5.2 does not load the previously used by lyx-1.4.x font correctly? And
by the way, when I selected Font: Times in lyx-1.4.x what is the font that I
have to select in lyx-1.5.2 to get the same printable results.

Having said that, I would like to underline that I really appreciate the new
features lyx-1.5.2 has and I am looking forward to working on a daily basis with
such a beautiful creature!

I gave it a preliminary test and it seems to do what I need.  It seems, 
however, that the headers and footers remain in potrait even though 
the body is in landscape.  Any ideas how I can rotate the whole page?  
(It is what Word does and I want to convert my colleagues to LyX in 
small increments :-)

You are right. With another font the expression it looks fine. But why? I
installed LyX 1.5.1 and MikTex with the Win-Installer, and besides that all
works fine. I would like to continue using the lmodern font...

does anyone know how to make citations appear as clickable links in the 
pdf output?


I'm using the Natbib numerical style with pdflatex and want something like

... the moon is made of cheese [1] ...

to appear in the body text with the citation [1] being clickable and 
refering to the bibliography entry, say,


[1] Brie 1989: My visit to the moon. Camembert Press.


I tried to find something about this in in the Wiki and this list's 
archives, but to no avail.

Interesting program, but why make it a converter in LyX? The LyX
converters are for converting between different file formats.
Your program doesn't do that, instead it changes a LyX file.
How about just running this from the os command line?
Why do you want to run this program from inside LyX?

Which wiewer should I declare in the preference window ? Would this 
converter replace the current document (it would be the best solution) 
? create a new Lyx view ?
I could create the corrected doc in pdf format, but I prefer avoiding 
my students installing a latex distribution. 

If you're doing this from a script, just run
lyx --export pdf2 file.lyx
in order to produce file.pdf automatically.

Before doing this, could you please check if it works this way:

- uninstall LyX 1.5.1 and/or LyX 1.5.2
- uninstall all Aspell dictionaries
- ininstall Aspell itself in case you see it as installed after you uninstalled 
the dictionaries
- reinstall LyX 1.5.2 using this installer:
  http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller

When this works this installer sets up the system so that your Aspell will be uninstalled together 
with LyX when you upgrade to another LyX version to assure that you'll have a working Aspell version

  Expediency won: I can do the reports using ReportLab's table layout. Fewer
than two dozen lines of code, and I can fine-tune placement on the page,
have headers that are defined once and printed on each page, and meet our
needs.

  It's not a generic solution, but it fits the application's structure and
works for our purposes.

The hyperref package is a popular way. Look up the documentation on ctan.

You can add \raggedright to the beginning of a
document, but that does

Hi,

When the document language is Spanish and the LaTeX-package babel
is used (the default), the Spanish Language Definition File (spanish.ldf)
sets some default behaviours that may have unexpected outcomes:

a) It may be that gives latex errors
For example: Since the lowercase Roman numerals are not used in Spanish,
they are redefined to noun style, but the command
\pagenumbering{roman} produces errors in some cases, e.g., pdflatex
don't works if the option plainpages=false for hyperref is used.
This problem is solved, I think. Just I have installed the last version
spanish v5.0a (http://www.texytipografia.com/spanish.html) and the error is out.
Marcelo has reported errors with the package bigfoot
(http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg59151.html)
(Trick: change roman to Roman)
Perhaps Marcelo may try the new spanish.ldf -.sty with bigfoot.

b) Changes in certain dialogs in LyX have no effect.
For example, the changes in bullets of itemized lists don't work,
because babel-spanish sets fixed bullets.
Hints: see the documentation of the Spanish-style,
http://www.texytipografia.com/archive/spanish.pdf
for alternate macros and commands to change the bullets.

c) Some words are translated into a different way for both LyX and
babel-spanish,
e.g., table is tabla in LyX and is cuadro in latex output.

Mediante ciertos comandos disponibles en el estilo spanish se pueden cambiar
las marcas, consulta su documentación en

(También se pueden hacer algunos trucos en el archivo spanish.ldf
para desactivar estos cambios y que funcione el diálogo de LyX, pero
esta vía no es recomendable)

c) LyX y babel-spanish traducen algunas palabras de forma distinta. Un
ejemplo es table.
En Lyx se traduce por tabla, mientras que en la salida procesada por
babel-spanish se
traduce por cuadro.

It's enough to put \usepackage{hyperref} in the preamble.

and if you wish to add color, for example:

\usepackage{hyperref}
\hypersetup{colorlinks=true,citecolor=blue}

yields nice results.

Good question.  I have MikTeX 2.6, with the most up-to-date version of 
the lm package, installed on a PC and a laptop.  On the laptop, I can 
use lm with no trouble, including math insets.  On the PC yesterday, I 
could use lm for plain text, but it would not display math insets 
because it could not find/make the lmmi8 font.  (I think it was 8, but I 
won't swear to that -- might have been 6.)  So I updated formats and 
tried something else (I forget what), and today I get no output at all 
using lm fonts on the PC.  I uninstalled/reinstalled the lm package, 
updated MikTeX's binaries, updated the font maps ... no joy.  I have a 
tech-support (TeX-support?) question in to Christian Schenck.


Best guess is that there's a font-mapping problem on the PC.  It would 
not surprise me if you were also experiencing a font-mapping problem, 
meaning that LaTeX wants to convert the math symbols (italic, possibly 
smaller font size than normal text) from the default cmr fonts to the 
appropriate lm fonts, but can't figure out the right one or can't find 
it.  If I get an answer from Christian, I'll pass it along.

No, I've had no problems opening old beamer presentations (and, like 
you, I have a bunch of them).  The format for LyX document files evolves 
with new releases, and there is a conversion tool included with LyX to 
convert older format LyX files to the current format.  It works pretty 
well but perhaps not perfectly; it may have tripped over something a bit 
unusual in your presentation file.  Whether it will have similar 
problems with other presentations is hard to predict.


Another notorius difference is the new font selection mechanism. In lyx-1.4.x I
selected the fonts of the document to Times. Now the new font selection window

I believe that if you want the Adobe standard fonts, you should select 
Times Roman, Helvetica and Courier for Roman, San Serif and Typewriter 
respectively.  If your imported slide show had the Roman font set to 
Times Roman and you got bitmapped fonts anyway, my guess is that they 
were for special characters (math symbols, san serif fonts, something 
like that).

ok. I understand that. I think that the source of the problem could be that I
use a beamer.layout which I do not remember well where I got, and there were
differences with respect the one that the conversion tool covered, but I am not
sure. Anyway, I can live with this.

Yes, that did the trick.

The default font of the beamer.layout was San Serif and lyx-1.5.2 selects
Default for the San Serif font and i think that this was the problem. When I
have selected Helvetica for San Serif following your advice everthing looks the
same as before (including Type 1 fonts).

Could you please contact the author of the file spanish.ldf and report him the bullet problem? A 
babel definition file shouldn't prevent to use customized bullets.


Could you please add a section about this to the Spanish UserGuide describing 
these issues?

Important information to: [announce] LyXWinInstaller (with Update installer) for LyX 1.5.2

 installer. With this you can easily your LyX 1.5.1 to LyX 1.5.2 without 
uninstalling LyX 1.5.1
 before installing LyX 1.5.2. Only log in as adminstrator on your PC and 
execute the update
 installer. Check it out!

Unfortunately there was a bug in the update installer source code resulting that after the update 
the ImageMagick settings in the registry contain a broken path. (ImageMagick is used by LyX to 
handle images.)
This bug only occurs when Ghostscript and ImageMagick were installed by the LyX installer. The small 
and complete installer versions are not affected.


*** So when you used the Update installer and encounter image handling problems, you must reinstall 
LyX 1.5.2 in order to get it to work again. (Use the small installer version for the 
reinstallation.) ***


I uploaded a fixed version of the update installer. So when you have downloaded the update installer 
but not yet used, please download the update installer again to get a fresh copy.


I'm very sorry for this mistake and the inconvenience.

but I receive a Missing \begin{document} Error when trying to preview the apa
document. What can I do to fix this? (By the way I am using lyx-1.5.2 now too.

 If Document - Settings... - Document class lists article (APA) as 
 unavailable, it means you do not have the APA class installed in your 
 LaTeX distribution.  How to download and install it is somewhat 
 distribution-specific.  Once it's installed, start LyX, run Tools - 
 Reconfigure, then close and reopen LyX.

  Expediency won: I can do the reports using ReportLab's table layout. Fewer
than two dozen lines of code, and I can fine-tune placement on the page,
have headers that are defined once and printed on each page, and meet our
needs.

  It's not a generic solution, but it fits the application's structure and
works for our purposes.

You can add \raggedright to the beginning of a

Hi,

When the document language is Spanish and the LaTeX-package babel
is used (the default), the Spanish Language Definition File (spanish.ldf)
sets some default behaviours that may have unexpected outcomes:

a) It may be that gives latex errors
For example: Since the lowercase Roman numerals are not used in Spanish,
they are redefined to noun style, but the command
\pagenumbering{roman} produces errors in some cases, e.g., pdflatex
don't works if the option plainpages=false for hyperref is used.
This problem is solved, I think. Just I have installed the last version
spanish v5.0a (http://www.texytipografia.com/spanish.html) and the error is out.
Marcelo has reported errors with the package bigfoot
(http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg59151.html)
(Trick: change roman to Roman)
Perhaps Marcelo may try the new spanish.ldf -.sty with bigfoot.

b) Changes in certain dialogs in LyX have no effect.
For example, the changes in bullets of itemized lists don't work,
because babel-spanish sets fixed bullets.
Hints: see the documentation of the Spanish-style,

for alternate macros and commands to change the bullets.

c) Some words are translated into a different way for both LyX and
babel-spanish,

En Lyx se traduce por tabla, mientras que en la salida procesada por
babel-spanish se
traduce por cuadro.

and if you wish to add color, for example:

\hypersetup{colorlinks=true,citecolor=blue}

yields nice results.

Good question.  I have MikTeX 2.6, with the most up-to-date version of 
the lm package, installed on a PC and a laptop.  On the laptop, I can 
use lm with no trouble, including math insets.  On the PC yesterday, I 
could use lm for plain text, but it would not display math insets 
because it could not find/make the lmmi8 font.  (I think it was 8, but I 
won't swear to that -- might have been 6.)  So I updated formats and 
tried something else (I forget what), and today I get no output at all 
using lm fonts on the PC.  I uninstalled/reinstalled the lm package, 
updated MikTeX's binaries, updated the font maps ... no joy.  I have a 
tech-support (TeX-support?) question in to Christian Schenck.


Best guess is that there's a font-mapping problem on the PC.  It would 
not surprise me if you were also experiencing a font-mapping problem, 
meaning that LaTeX wants to convert the math symbols (italic, possibly 
smaller font size than normal text) from the default cmr fonts to the 
appropriate lm fonts, but can't figure out the right one or can't find 
it.  If I get an answer from Christian, I'll pass it along.

No, I've had no problems opening old beamer presentations (and, like 
you, I have a bunch of them).  The format for LyX document files evolves 
with new releases, and there is a conversion tool included with LyX to 
convert older format LyX files to the current format.  It works pretty 
well but perhaps not perfectly; it may have tripped over something a bit 
unusual in your presentation file.  Whether it will have similar 
problems with other presentations is hard to predict.


Another notorius difference is the new font selection mechanism. In lyx-1.4.x I
selected the fonts of the document to Times. Now the new font selection window
it says Default Family: Default and Roman: Times Roman. The problem is twofold

- the generated pdf embbeds type 3 fonts (bitmapped)
- the look of the fonts is quite different

Why lyx-1.5.2 does not load the previously used by lyx-1.4.x font correctly? And
by the way, when I selected Font: Times in lyx-1.4.x what is the font that I
have to select in lyx-1.5.2 to get the same printable results.


I believe that if you want the Adobe standard fonts, you should select 
Times Roman, Helvetica and Courier for Roman, San Serif and Typewriter 
respectively.  If your imported slide show had the Roman font set to 
Times Roman and you got bitmapped fonts anyway, my guess is that they 
were for special characters (math symbols, san serif fonts, something 
like that).

ok. I understand that. I think that the source of the problem could be that I
use a beamer.layout which I do not remember well where I got, and there were
differences with respect the one that the conversion tool covered, but I am not
sure. Anyway, I can live with this.

Yes, that did the trick.

The default font of the beamer.layout was San Serif and lyx-1.5.2 selects
Default for the San Serif font and i think that this was the problem. When I
have selected Helvetica for San Serif following your advice everthing looks the
same as before (including Type 1 fonts).

Could you please contact the author of the file spanish.ldf and report him the bullet problem? A 
babel definition file shouldn't prevent to use customized bullets.


Could you please add a section about this to the Spanish UserGuide describing

Important information to: [announce] LyXWinInstaller (with Update installer) for LyX 1.5.2

and complete installer versions are not affected.


*** So when you used the Update installer and encounter image handling problems, you must reinstall 
LyX 1.5.2 in order to get it to work again. (Use the small installer version for the 
reinstallation.) ***


I uploaded a fixed version of the update installer. So when you have downloaded the update installer 
but not yet used, please download the update installer again to get a fresh copy.

 unavailable, it means you do not have the APA class installed in your 
 LaTeX distribution.  How to download and install it is somewhat 
 distribution-specific.  Once it's installed, start LyX, run Tools -

Your program doesn't do that, instead it changes a LyX file.
How about just running this from the os command line?
Why do you want to run this program from inside LyX?

Which wiewer should I declare in the preference window ? Would this 
converter replace the current document (it would be the best solution) 
? create a new Lyx view ?
I could create the corrected doc in pdf format, but I prefer avoiding 
my students installing a latex distribution. 

If you're doing this from a script, just run
lyx --export pdf2 file.lyx
in order to produce file.pdf automatically.

Before doing this, could you please check if it works this way:

- uninstall LyX 1.5.1 and/or LyX 1.5.2
- uninstall all Aspell dictionaries
- ininstall Aspell itself in case you see it as installed after you uninstalled 
the dictionaries
- reinstall LyX 1.5.2 using this installer:
  http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller

When this works this installer sets up the system so that your Aspell will be uninstalled together 
with LyX when you upgrade to another LyX version to assure that you'll have a working Aspell version

Por ejemplo, como en español no se usan los romanos en minúscula,
"spanish.ldf" los redefine a números en versalitas, pero este cambio
a veces no funciona:  pdflatex no compila el documento si en éste coinciden
el comando \pagenumbering{roman} y el paquete hyperref con la opción
"plainpages=false".
(Una solución es cambiar roman por Roman, romanos en mayúscula).
Este problema parece estar resuelto; acabo de probar la versión última de
spanish.ldf -.sty, v5-0a, (http://www.texytipografia.com/spanish.html)
y el error ya no se produce.
Marcelo (http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg59151.html)
ha informado también de conflicto entre \pagenumbering{roman} y el
paquete bigfoot.

b) Los cambios de ciertos diálogos en LyX no tienen ningún efecto.
Así, las marcas de las listas "enumeración*" no cambiarán aunque lo intentes
en el diálogo "Marcas" correspondiente. Se debe a que  "spanish.ldf" establece
por defecto unas marcas fijas.
Mediante ciertos comandos disponibles en el estilo "spanish" se pueden cambiar
las marcas, consulta su documentación en
 http://www.texytipografia.com/archive/spanish.pdf.
(También se pueden hacer algunos trucos en el archivo "spanish.ldf"
para desactivar estos cambios y que funcione el diálogo de LyX, pero
esta vía no es recomendable)

c) LyX y babel-spanish traducen algunas palabras de forma distinta. Un
ejemplo es "table".
En Lyx se traduce por "tabla", mientras que en la salida procesada por
babel-spanish se
traduce por "cuadro".

It's enough to put "\usepackage{hyperref}" in the preamble.

and if you wish to add color, for example:

\usepackage{hyperref}
\hypersetup{colorlinks=true,citecolor=blue}

yields nice results.

Good question.  I have MikTeX 2.6, with the most up-to-date version of 
the lm package, installed on a PC and a laptop.  On the laptop, I can 
use lm with no trouble, including math insets.  On the PC yesterday, I 
could use lm for plain text, but it would not display math insets 
because it could not find/make the lmmi8 font.  (I think it was 8, but I 
won't swear to that -- might have been 6.)  So I updated formats and 
tried something else (I forget what), and today I get no output at all 
using lm fonts on the PC.  I uninstalled/reinstalled the lm package, 
updated MikTeX's binaries, updated the font maps ... no joy.  I have a 
tech-support (TeX-support?) question in to Christian Schenck.


Best guess is that there's a font-mapping problem on the PC.  It would 
not surprise me if you were also experiencing a font-mapping problem, 
meaning that LaTeX wants to convert the math symbols (italic, possibly 
smaller font size than normal text) from the default cmr fonts to the 
appropriate lm fonts, but can't figure out the right one or can't find 
it.  If I get an answer from Christian, I'll pass it along.

No, I've had no problems opening old beamer presentations (and, like 
you, I have a bunch of them).  The format for LyX document files evolves 
with new releases, and there is a conversion tool included with LyX to 
convert older format LyX files to the current format.  It works pretty 
well but perhaps not perfectly; it may have tripped over something a bit 
unusual in your presentation file.  Whether it will have similar 
problems with other presentations is hard to predict.


Another notorius difference is the new font selection mechanism. In lyx-1.4.x I
selected the fonts of the document to Times. Now the new font selection window
it says Default Family: Default and Roman: Times Roman. The problem is twofold

- the generated pdf embbeds type 3 fonts (bitmapped)
- the look of the fonts is quite different

Why lyx-1.5.2 does not load the previously used by lyx-1.4.x font correctly? And
by the way, when I selected Font: Times in lyx-1.4.x what is the font that I
have to select in lyx-1.5.2 to get the same printable results.


I believe that if you want the Adobe standard fonts, you should select 
Times Roman, Helvetica and Courier for Roman, San Serif and Typewriter 
respectively.  If your imported slide show had the Roman font set to 
Times Roman and you got bitmapped fonts anyway, my guess is that they 
were for special characters (math symbols, san serif fonts, something 
like that).

ok. I understand that. I think that the source of the problem could be that I
use a beamer.layout which I do not remember well where I got, and there were
differences with respect the one that the conversion tool covered, but I am not
sure. Anyway, I can live with this.

Yes, that did the trick.

The default font of the beamer.layout was San Serif and lyx-1.5.2 selects
"Default" for the San Serif font and i think that this was the problem. When I
have selected Helvetica for San Serif following your advice everthing looks the
same as before (including Type 1 fonts).

Unfortunately there was a bug in the update installer source code resulting that after the update 
the ImageMagick settings in the registry contain a broken path. (ImageMagick is used by LyX to 
handle images.)
This bug only occurs when Ghostscript and ImageMagick were installed by the LyX installer. The small 
and complete installer versions are not affected.


*** So when you used the Update installer and encounter image handling problems, you must reinstall 
LyX 1.5.2 in order to get it to work again. (Use the small installer version for the 
reinstallation.) ***


I uploaded a fixed version of the update installer. So when you have downloaded the update installer 
but not yet used, please download the update installer again to get a fresh copy.

Thanks for your response. That helped a lot. I installed the apa and the 
apacite package
but I receive a "Missing \begin{document}" Error when trying to preview the apa
document. What can I do to fix this? (By the way I am using lyx-1.5.2 now too.
