hyphenation in Italian, again
Can someone give me an idiot-proof guide to changing hyphenation to Italian? I'm very new to Lyx but have to get the manuscript out to my publishers quickly. I'm having problems because the hyphenation is just wrong for Italian. I've searched this list and found a number of old posts - some going back ten years or more - which say I need to change various config files, working under the bonnet with miktex and other things of which as yet I know nothing, but those files are not where the posts say they should be and when I open the (newer?) versions of those files that I have found, assuming I've got the right ones, I find big unfriendly warnings that nothing should be changed. It's rather worrying, and I have -don't we all?- imminent deadlines! Thanks enormously, and in advance. I'm running Lyx 1.5.3 on ubuntu linux 8.04 Richard Richard Brown ..

I have already searched the internet for some hours but have not found a solution yet. I found a latex package called subfigure , but some how this did not work together with the float environment. I would greatly appreciate any help, thanks in advance ! Dainis, I don't know of any easy way of doing this, but the following process should work: 1. Get the numbers of subsequent pages right. You can do this with the LaTeX command \setpagenumber{41} inserted after your last figure, but if you don't have any pages after the last figure you won't need to do this. 2. Export to PDF from LyX. 3. Use PDFTK to uncompress the PDF file. (http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/) 4. Use a text editor on the uncompressed PDF file, and change the page numbers as required. 5. If needed, use the text editor on the uncompressed PDF file to change any references to the page numbers of the figures on the pages you just renumbered. If you only used figure numbers in crossreferences, you will only have to change the List of Figures. 6. Use PDFTK to compress the PDF file. I can see some potential problems. The justification of the edited numbers will be off slightly. Finding the numbers to edit in the uncompressed PDF file could be difficult. You could simplify that problem by using PDFTK to extract the pages to be edited individually, and just uncompressing them. Re: hyphenation in Italian, again
Dear Richard, remember to always include the list on your replies. I thought you were on Windows as you spoke of MikTeX. But no problem. First of all, generate the PDF of your document and check what LaTeX says on the hyphenation patterns being used. You can check that in LyX in Document-Latex Log. There you will see a message at the beggining saying: Babel v3.8h and hyphenation patterns for english... Those are the languages being used by Babel. If you found Italian, then LaTeX is using Italian and I don't know what the problem is. If you cannot find it, the it means you have to install th package texlive-lang-italian, which loads the Italian hyphenation pattern. Footnot-dw-style / Biblatex / Waßenhoven
Dear list, I use the above mentioned footnote-dw-style in a report [koma]- document. I read about the numbering of the footnotes, that »the first citation will give a full reference, following citations will only use author and shorttitle«. I would like to change that manner, so that the first citation will give a full reference, not for the whole document, but for just the chapter. Is there a possibility to do this? Thank you* Jess
RE: Page numbering for subpages
Hi, This could also be done using a set of LaTeX commands following your main body text. This is a rough first draft, but the general procedure goes like this: 1.) Create a variable to keep track of the current page. 2.) Redefine \thepage macro so that it will paginate the sub-figures appropriately. This will involve resetting the page counter 3.) Set page back to its previous value. If you follow this procedure at every figure/subfigure groups, it should have the desired effect. A rough draft of the code is below. Also, you might consider redefining one of the float environments (or creating your own) so that it applies these definitions automatically. That would spare you from needing to add them before every block of figures. %% % Add to the document preamble \newcommand{\currentpage}{\relax} End of Body Text ___ % Add the following before the first figure as ERT % Create Value to Keep Track of the Current Page \renewcommand{\currentpage}{\value{page}} \setcounter{page}{0} % Set the page counter value to zero \renewcommand{\thepage}{\arabic{\currentpage}\alph{page}} % Track the sub pages ___ Sub-figures ___ % Add the following before the next figure as ERT \setcounter{page}{\currentpage} % Restores the currentpage value \renewcommand{\thepage}{\arabic{page}} % Restores the previous definition %% This is an extremely rough solution, and I haven't tested it, but it would generally have the effect that you're looking for. RE: Bad experience with BasicTeX-2009 on Mac
Hi Joachim, The errors that you posted are common when using xetex instead of pdflatex or basic latex to compile a document. Do you know if your installation is trying to use xelatex instead of the other engines? You may want to check your export settings and make sure that something didn't get inadvertently changed. If you haven't already, you might want to try reconfiguring LyX (Tools - Reconfigure). However, I would actually recommend that you use MacTeX. While it is a bit of a hard drive pig (3 GB), I've had troubles with other LaTeX distributions on Mac (including BasicTeX). The package selection is incomplete, or I will discover that a necessary font wasn't installed. It seems that some of the smaller distributions don't always carefully vet their dependencies and this can result in installed packages requiring software that wasn't included. Manually trying to sort this out is tremendously frustrating. (Speaking from experience here.) Compared to those frustrations, I finally decided that I would just delete a few extra videos out of iTunes. Even now, months later, I still think that was a good decision. hyphenation in Italian, again

Lyx 1.6.4, APA-Formatvorlage fehlt; Ubuntu 9.10
It should be straightforward by changing the language of the document. Irfanview and LyX
I am a light user without LATEX knowledge. I use LyX for a year ago. In my opinion, LyX ranks among the best tools of free open source code ( or no ) that I had known. Thank you very much! Fantastic Work! I have some suggestions ... but today I will limit myself to ask a question. I work in Windows XP 3 and I need 'imperiously' to change the default external image viewer/editor/visor (MSPaint) to another visor (irfanview) www(dot)irfanview(dot)com). I have tried to follow the Customization instructions manual and I have had success with Imagine (www(dot)nyam(dot)pe(dot)kr/ (yes!) but Irfanview is lighter. Thanks in Advance!

You can check that in LyX in "Document->Latex Log". There you will see a message at the beggining saying: Babel and hyphenation patterns for english... Those are the languages being used by Babel. If you found "Italian", then LaTeX is using Italian and I don't know what the problem is. If you cannot find it, the it means you have to install th package "texlive-lang-italian", which loads the Italian hyphenation pattern. I hope this helps. - Julio Rojas jcredbe...@gmail.com On Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 4:07 PM, Richard Brownwrote: > Looking at www.MikTeX.org it seems miktex- which I don't have on my > system as far as I can tell- is a windows programme.
This will involve resetting the "page" counter 3.) Set "page" back to its previous value. If you follow this procedure at every figure/subfigure groups, it should have the desired effect. A rough draft of the code is below. Also, you might consider redefining one of the float environments (or creating your own) so that it applies these definitions automatically. That would spare you from needing to add them before every block of figures. %% % Add to the document preamble \newcommand{\currentpage}{\relax} End of Body Text ___ % Add the following before the first "figure" as ERT % Create Value to Keep Track of the Current Page \renewcommand{\currentpage}{\value{page}} \setcounter{page}{0} % Set the page counter value to zero \renewcommand{\thepage}{\arabic{\currentpage}\alph{page}} % Track the sub pages ___ Sub-figures ___ % Add the following before the next figure as ERT \setcounter{page}{\currentpage} % Restores the currentpage value \renewcommand{\thepage}{\arabic{page}} % Restores the previous definition %% This is an extremely rough solution, and I haven't tested it, but it would generally have the effect that you're looking for. Bad experience with BasicTeX-2009 on Mac
Has anyone tried some BasicTeX version for MacOS with LyX with succes? This time, for reasons of disc space economy, I prefered not to migrate to full MacTeX 2009, but rather installing the BacicTeX.dmg (2009) from http://www.tug.org/mactex/2009/morepackages.html for then, whenever necessary, install aditional LaTeX packages with tlmgr. Because all the day I'm using a somewhat extraordinary LaTeX/LyX document class (tufte-latex, handout and book), I expected having to install additional packages after need, whenever in an error message is said "cannot find xy.sty" or similar - and I did this already in about 10 cases. But there must be some other principal problem, that inhibits properly compiling of my (existing) LyX documents. I am sure, it is not because of LyX. But perhaps someone here can give advice, though: With a tufte-handout lyx file, which compiled well to pdf under MacTeX-2008, now there are errors like: ! Font T1/phv/m/n/10=phvr8t at 8.4pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. ! Font T1/pplj/m/n/10=pplr9d at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. Other error messages with the koma letter class and layout (also working before): ! Font T1/pplx/m/n/12=pplr9e at 12.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not foun ! Arithmetic overflow. ! Font T1/pplx/m/n/8=pplr9e at 8.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. ! Font OT1/pplx/m/n/8=pplr9t at 8.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found etc. ! \textfont 0 is undefined (character (). None of the processes result in usable pdf. regards, joachim -- Mac BacicTeX 2009 - TeXShop 2.29 - LyX 1.6.5 MacBook Pro intel OSX 10.4.11 Tiger
If you haven't already, you might want to try reconfiguring LyX (Tools -> Reconfigure). Re: Lyx 1.6.4, APA-Formatvorlage fehlt; Ubuntu 9.10

Dies liegt wahrscheinlich daran, dass eine benötigte LaTeX-Klasse oder Stil-Datei nicht verfügbar ist. Bitte lesen Sie das Hilfe-Dokument 'Anpassung' für weitere Informationen. You need to install the LaTeX-package APA. Use the TeXLive package manager to install APA. But why do you want to use APA? This is a layout for journal submissions of the American Psychological Association. It is not designed for master theses and the like. Moreover, I wonder why you as German should use the layout of an American society for your thesis. I recommend to use the class book (koma-script), report (koma-script) or memoir. regards Uwe

It is enough to specify "irfanview" as editor (in case the filename is irfanview.exe. Assure that the path to the irfanview.exe is in LyX's PATH prefix in the LyX preferences. regards Uwe
