Re: install latest lyx

2010-06-22 Thread Wolfgang Engelmann
I would like to install the latest LyX version on my Debian Linux.
  I used Guenther Mildes proposal:

   wolfgang:/home/wolfgang# apt-get build-dep lyx
  and get

  Building dependency tree
  Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Did I get a result and if, where do I look for it?

I would say that you did. Apt reports that you have all the packages
that the build depends upon. You are ready to start building the new
 LyX.

Now download the LyX version that you want and build according to the
 instructions on the wiki: http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/Compiling

 Cheers,
 Alan

  Wolfgang

Thanks, Alan and Marcelo.

I did now in my /lyx-devel a
svn update

and from http://www.lyx.org/HowToUseSVN
6. Compiling the source

I am supposed to do:

If you want to compile and run the development module, things are somewhat
more complicated than for the release module. You're going to need automake,
autoconf, and gettext, which can be downloaded from your favorite GNU ftp
site. (Start at gnu.org to find a mirror.) Once you've installed all of that
stuff, just run the autogen.sh script written by Allan Rae, which will do
things in the right order, and then tell you to run configure and make.

Where would I find the autogen.sh script written by Allan Rae?

Memo template

2010-06-22 Thread Kevin Foster
Hello all,

I've very new to LyX and somewhat new to LaTeX. Can anyone comment on the
existence of memo templates? The selection of user-created
templateshttp://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Layouts i
found (layouts? same thing right?) is surprisingly sparse given LyX's
enthusiastic user base... as several previous commenters on this list have
noted, the absence of a simple memo template is a shame. This
threadhttp://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg28646.html
sums
it up best.

Are there many layouts out there elsewhere on the site that I'm missing? Do
I just have to read the documentation and create my own layout? I recognize
that it's not a very difficult process, but for new users it would be nice
if more shared layouts were on the wiki. Of course i'm happy to post
whatever i come up with once i figure it out... just surprised there aren't
memo layouts up already :)

Best regards,
Kevin

ftp down - Windows installer not working!

2010-06-22 Thread Nigel Arnot
The ftp server(?) is down. The mirrors may be up, but the lyx installer
(lyx-1.6.6-1-Installer.exe) is not using the mirrors for loading aspell.
At that point (downloading aspell6-en-6.0.0.exe) it waits a bit, says
connection failed, and offers a choice between cancelling or trying
again. Try again is useless, cancel completes a Lyx installation with
spell check greyed out.

Like this for at least a day now. Please can someone fix the aspell
download server that the above installer uses?

Also does anyone know how to tell Lyx installed after cancelling aspell
download to use an instance of aspell separately installed?

glossaries and export

2010-06-22 Thread Steven Bell
I am attempting to use the glossaries package with LyX, and have had only
partial success. I've put the appropriate ERT into my document and created a
short makefile which exports the LyX document to TeX and runs pdflatex and
makeindex to generate the final pdf. This works well, but I would like a
solution that doesn't produce quite as much clutter.
Obviously there is built-in support for the nomencl package, but that
appears to not have been updated in the last 5 years or so (
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/nomencl/) and it
doesn't appear to do what I'm currently doing with glossaries.

Is there a way for me to export the LyX document (and the included images)
to a separate directory, the same way I would create a build subdirectory
when compiling software? Right now, it just appears that lyx -e pdflatex
just creates files in the directories where the source files are.

Even better, is there a way to have LyX run makeindex and makeglossaries for
me, and produce the final pdf without the makefile?

I've been using LyX 1.6.5 and svn trunk.

Thanks,
Steven

No. Layouts tell LyX how to handle document classes (mainly how to
display them, what environments to allow, etc., with some ability to
customize the document class within the layout file). Templates are
prefab fill in the blanks documents. Essentially, a template is just
an ordinary LyX document. If you open it with File Open, you can edit
it. If you choose File New from Template and select that document,
LyX opens it but with a different file name (the generic
newfile#.lyx name), so that you won't accidentally overwrite it if
you make changes and do a save operation.

I haven't read the thread, but I'm not particularly surprised -- memos
frequently need to observe some formatting rules/preferences established
by the author's organization (e.g., first page on the organization's
letterhead).

Are there many layouts out there elsewhere on the site that I'm missing?
Do I just have to read the documentation and create my own layout?

Unless you have to do something funky, it's a lot easier to create a
template than to create a layout -- a layout makes sense mostly if you
have tracked down a third party LaTeX document class (or created your own).

If you want to create something fancy, you might start with
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/bytopic.html#letters.
Search for memo (sadly having to skip over quite a few hits on
memoir) and see if anything tickles your fancy.

My guess is that memo layouts (as opposed to templates) will be highly
customized to the user's environment (and preferences). I'm attaching a
bare bones, plain paper memo template I use for within-office,
don't-sweat-the-letterhead stuff. Change my name to your (or whatever
pseudonym you want to use), futz with choice of language, paper size,
preferred fonts etc. in Document Settings, and save it someplace.
Then use File New from Template to load a copy of it and memo away.

This is interesting: the log says the version of beamer is 3.08A while the
download directory says it's 3.09. Regardless, the new hyperref version does
not have the .sty and .cfg files that the document is seeking. Searching
CTAN shows no hyperref.sty to be found. Something's still outdated and I'm
not seeing it.

New log file attached, perhaps a fresh pair of eyes will see it.

Drag and drop text support on Lyx 1.6.6.1

2010-06-22 Thread Jose A. Rodrigo

Hi!!

First of all congratulations for this useful program and brilliant project!!

It is not possible to drag-and-drop text (just by selecting it with
mouse pointer) like other text processors i.e. OpenWriter. Do you know
when this feature will be added to lyx? I think that it will be very
useful for many users. It will be great if this option is available for
equation editing as well. Up to now I used copy and paste shortcuts.

Many thanks!
Jose

If you all do implement this feature, please include a switch to turn it off.
Personally I'd prefer it be turned off by default, and if it's turned on by
default, please widely publicize the change.

The way I work, dragging and dropping of text is a sure way to garble a
document.

The ./ (dot slash) is important. It tells your shell to execute the file
from the current folder. If you get an error again, make sure the file
is present by doing

ls

which should list the files in the current folder. If you copied the LyX
source files correctly, you should see autogen.sh in there.

Is \makebeamertitle defined? It should get defined by the layout file,
but I suppose you could be using a custom layout or something.

You can try in the preamble:

\newcommand\makebeamertitle{\frame{\maketitle}}

Otherwise the usual approach applies here: make a minimal example file
which reproduces the problem on your machine and send it out to this
list for help.

Paul,

Both source .tex and .log are attached.

While the newest hyperref package does not include all the files of the
earlier versions and throws a warning, the error that halts compilation of
the file is \makebeamertitle.

You mentioned something about hyperref not having a .sty or .cfg file??

After seeing complaints in an earlier log file about hyperref I downloaded
and installed the latest version from CTAN. There are no .sty or .cfg files
for hyperref in the latest release.

After seeing complaints in an earlier log file about hyperref I downloaded

Well, your log indicates it seems to be loading hyperref (and, in particular,

you grabbed the .dtx and .ins files, did you run 'tex hyperref.ins' to generate
the .sty file(s), and then distribute stuff around your TDS tree? (And did you

That was more than helpful. The organization-specific aspect hadn't
occurred to me, and of course makes sense. As a graduate student I like to
create a lot of memos for research notes, homework assignments, etc. but
they are all in-house so formatting doesn't matter greatly.

 thing right?)

No. Layouts tell LyX how to handle document classes (mainly how to display
them, what environments to allow, etc., with some ability to customize the
document class within the layout file). Templates are prefab fill in the
blanks documents. Essentially, a template is just an ordinary LyX
document. If you open it with File Open, you can edit it. If you choose
File New from Template and select that document, LyX opens it but with a
different file name (the generic newfile#.lyx name), so that you won't
accidentally overwrite it if you make changes and do a save operation.

is surprisingly sparse given LyX's enthusiastic user
base... as several previous commenters on this list have noted, the
absence of a simple memo template is a shame. This thread
 http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg28646.html sums
 it up best.

I haven't read the thread, but I'm not particularly surprised -- memos
frequently need to observe some formatting rules/preferences established by
the author's organization (e.g., first page on the organization's
 letterhead).

Are there many layouts out there elsewhere on the site that I'm missing?
Do I just have to read the documentation and create my own layout?

Unless you have to do something funky, it's a lot easier to create a
template than to create a layout -- a layout makes sense mostly if you have
tracked down a third party LaTeX document class (or created your own).

If you want to create something fancy, you might start with
 http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/bytopic.html#letters.
Search for memo (sadly having to skip over quite a few hits on memoir)
and see if anything tickles your fancy.

   I
recognize that it's not a very difficult process, but for new users it
would be nice if more shared layouts were on the wiki. Of course i'm
happy to post whatever i come up with once i figure it out... just
surprised there aren't memo layouts up already :)

Then use
File New from Template to load a copy of it and memo away.

 Paul

ftp down - Windows installer not working!

Thanks,
Steven

Yes, you are. Beamer loads it automatically.

The location of the 'undefined control

entered in the text) is not highlighted. I've attached the .log file and
would appreciate someone showing me just where the error occurs and what
fixes it.

Might have something to do with the problem mentioned here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=452333. Your log says
you're loading v6.74m of hyperref (the post mentions 6.75p). FWIW, I
just compiled a beamer doc on my Windoze PC (MiKTeX), and I'm loading
v6.81e (dated 2010/05/13). So maybe an update of your hyperref package

Hello all,

I've very new to LyX and somewhat new to LaTeX. Can anyone comment on
the existence of memo templates? The selection of user-created
templates http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Layouts i found (layouts? same
thing right?)

No. Layouts tell LyX how to handle document classes (mainly how to
display them, what environments to allow, etc., with some ability to
customize the document class within the layout file). Templates are
prefab fill in the blanks documents. Essentially, a template is just
an ordinary LyX document. If you open it with File Open, you can edit
it. If you choose File New from Template and select that document,
LyX opens it but with a different file name (the generic
newfile#.lyx name), so that you won't accidentally overwrite it if
you make changes and do a save operation.

is surprisingly sparse given LyX's enthusiastic user
base... as several previous commenters on this list have noted, the
absence of a simple memo template is a shame. This thread
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg28646.html sums
it up best.

I haven't read the thread, but I'm not particularly surprised -- memos
frequently need to observe some formatting rules/preferences established
by the author's organization (e.g., first page on the organization's
letterhead).

 I
recognize that it's not a very difficult process, but for new users it
would be nice if more shared layouts were on the wiki. Of course i'm
happy to post whatever i come up with once i figure it out... just
surprised there aren't memo layouts up already :)

Paul

This is interesting: the log says the version of beamer is 3.08A while the
download directory says it's 3.09. Regardless, the new hyperref version does
not have the .sty and .cfg files that the document is seeking. Searching
CTAN shows no hyperref.sty to be found. Something's still outdated and I'm
not seeing it.

New log file attached, perhaps a fresh pair of eyes will see it.

Drag and drop text support on Lyx 1.6.6.1

Is \makebeamertitle defined? It should get defined by the layout file,
but I suppose you could be using a custom layout or something.

You can try in the preamble:

\newcommand\makebeamertitle{\frame{\maketitle}}

Otherwise the usual approach applies here: make a minimal example file

Had to add some verbiage to the Section header and an EndFrame to close it off,

Paul,

Both source .tex and .log are attached.

While the newest hyperref package does not include all the files of the
earlier versions and throws a warning, the error that halts compilation of
the file is \makebeamertitle.

Well, your log indicates it seems to be loading hyperref (and, in particular,

The config file (also found) has a 2002 version date. That's not the latest

Your log shows hyperref loading a little earlier than mine does, but what loads

other major discrepancy between our logs is that yours indicates some ConTeXT

Dunno if that would muck things up. I think I'd try straightening out the
questions about hyperref first. The latest release comes as .ins and .dtx
files, although there's supposed to be a .zip version somewhere or other. If
you grabbed the .dtx and .ins files, did you run 'tex hyperref.ins' to generate
the .sty file(s), and then distribute stuff around your TDS tree? (And did you

Re: Memo template

That was more than helpful. The organization-specific aspect hadn't
occurred to me, and of course makes sense. As a graduate student I like to
create a lot of memos for research notes, homework assignments, etc. but
they are all in-house so formatting doesn't matter greatly.

 Hello all,

I've very new to LyX and somewhat new to LaTeX. Can anyone comment on
the existence of memo templates? The selection of user-created

 thing right?)

Then use
File New from Template to load a copy of it and memo away.

 HTH,
 Paul

After a long, tedious process I discovered that a) I needed all the

Where would I find the autogen.sh script written by Allan Rae?

apt-get install autogen

You might like to use Synaptic which is a GUI interface to apt-get. Or
aptitude in a terminal. Either one makes life a lot easier.

Let us know how you go.

Memo template

2010-06-22 Thread Kevin Foster
Hello all,

I've very new to LyX and somewhat new to LaTeX. Can anyone comment on the
existence of memo templates? The selection of user-created
templates i
found (layouts? same thing right?) is surprisingly sparse given LyX's
enthusiastic user base... as several previous commenters on this list have
noted, the absence of a simple "memo" template is a shame. This
thread
sums

Best regards,
Kevin

ftp down -> Windows installer not working!

"connection failed", and offers a choice between cancelling or trying

Right now, it just appears that "lyx -e pdflatex"
just creates files in the directories where the source files are.

Templates are
prefab "fill in the blanks" documents. Essentially, a template is just
an ordinary LyX document. If you open it with File > Open, you can edit
it. If you choose File > New from Template and select that document,
LyX opens it but with a different file name (the generic
"newfile<#>.lyx" name), so that you won't accidentally overwrite it if
you make changes and do a save operation.

Search for "memo" (sadly having to skip over quite a few hits on
"memoir") and see if anything tickles your fancy.

My guess is that memo layouts (as opposed to templates) will be highly
customized to the user's environment (and preferences). I'm attaching a
bare bones, plain paper memo template I use for within-office,
don't-sweat-the-letterhead stuff. Change my name to your (or whatever
pseudonym you want to use), futz with choice of language, paper size,
preferred fonts etc. in Document > Settings, and save it someplace.
Then use File > New from Template to load a copy of it and memo away.

I had done this, but I was mislead by
"just run the autogen.sh script" in the 6. Compiling advice ... cited above

experienced people would have know that one has to run
autogen
and not autogen.sh

running autogen in ~/lyx-devel was not a good idea either, since

wolfg...@wolfgang:~/lyx-devel$ autogen
cd '/home/wolfgang/lyx-devel'
cd '/home/wolfgang/lyx-devel'

so one level up
wolfg...@wolfgang:~$ autogen
cd '/home/wolfgang/lyx-devel'

and now I am waiting ...

either I did again something wrong, or it takes quite some time.
Is there a way to get messages about what is going on in the background?

The way I work, dragging and dropping of text is a sure way to garble a
document.

autogen.sh is correct, not autogen. The complete procedure is:

cd ~/lyx-devel
./autogen.sh
./configure
make

optionally you would also run:

sudo make install
