Multi-column layout for multilingual documents (translations)

Hi!

I wonder if there is a viable way to manage multilingual (translated)  
texts in a multi-column layout with Lyx (or plain Latex). There might  
be a technical term for this, which I don't know however, so let me  
give an example:


I have got an edition of Beckets Waiting for Godot in English, French  
and German. Every right side contains the german text, while on the  
left there are two columns containing the english and french version,  
respectively, in a smaller font. Wherever one text hits the bottom of a  
page, the other two do a pagebreak as well.


So there are three concepts at work here:
 1. Two or more texts (translations of one text) which correspond to  
each other in structure (paragraphs, phrases), so that the  
corresponding parts can be aligned automatically. The corresponding  
parts need to be marked by the user.

 2. Fitting this in a multi-column layout.
 3. Fitting this in a multi-page layout.

The third I do not need, but how do I achieve the first two? I am  
trying to use long tables now, which is a mess.

i prepared a lyx european cv and at the end of it I put my bibtex db of
publications but lyx doesn't work fine.
Lyx trunks my publications at the end of page so it doesn't go to next
page.

You probably should look into the ledmac and ledpar packages
http://www.djdekker.net/ledmac/

As far as I know LyX does not support these packages from the GUI,
however you may be content to use ERT to insert raw LaTeX, but it
is also possible that this is easier to do in a good LaTeX editor...

If you really want to use LyX you could probably make an module or
an layout for ledpar, however this may be a bit tricky. If you you 
like a challenge have a look in Customizing in the Help menu in LyX.

So this seems to be a feature of either QT or your OS or both to
keep/convert the syntax highligt in the source view window when pasting
to an application thought to accept HTML.

sharing documents among various people, since the absolute path will be
broken the moment you move the directory structure to another machine.

Can't LyX sort through this issue in the same manner as it does with
graphics paths, i.e. by transforming relative paths to absolute paths when
the LaTeX is exported to the temporary directory?  So behind the scenes, LyX
could change:
  \subimport{ relative path }
to
  \import{ absolute path }
when it exports the temporary files...

In the case of graphics, the procedure is slightly different: the graphics 
themselves are copied to the temp directory as well.

It is a strict policy that LyX does not touch ERT. So for this, native support 
for the import package would be required.

I will try the parallel and parcolums packages first (of which  
parcolumns seems much more mature at the first glance). They appear to  
provide just what I need, while ledmac/ledpar seem to be overkill for  
me. Yet another package, paracol, was mentioned somewhere, though the  
link there was dead and I could not find anything else about it on the  
web.


Lyx integration would be nice, but I do not think I can do this anytime  
soon. Maybe someone else will: I just noticed that ledmac/ledpar  
support is on the feature poll in the wiki:  
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/FeaturePoll2 (under Package support).

LyX does not look into and change things in ERT, and if you think about 
it there is really no way for it to do so reliably. So the only real 
solution would be proper support for this package inside LyX.

Not necessarily. External tenplates can be used as well. I attach a quick 
draft of a template for the \import command, together with an example .lyx 
file. If you want to use it, append the template to the file 
external_templates in your LyX installation. A template for the \subimport 
command can be constructed in the same way. The only thing you need to know 
are all those variables like $$AbsPath etc. These are described in the last 
chapter of the customization manual. With these variables you can construct 
any relative or absolute path you need. The external template definitions 
are a bit awkward, but it is a very powerful mechanism, and if you use an 
existing template as a base it is not difficult to create new ones.

 You can file an enhacement request for this, describing what this package
 achieves and why you think it is worth supporting it.

This might be a good idea nevertheless (for consistency with \input and 
\include). As I understand it, the package works around the uncommon 
handling of relative file names in LaTeX and is worth it to be supported: 
Relative paths in child documents are interpreted relative to the _master 
document_ in LaTeX. This is different from all other programs I know 
(including LyX), where relative paths in child documents are interpreted 
relative to the _child document_.

keep/convert the syntax highligt in the source view window when pasting
to an application thought to accept HTML.

The problem with this is that relative directories are very useful when
sharing documents among various people, since the absolute path will be
broken the moment you move the directory structure to another machine.

Can't LyX sort through this issue in the same manner as it does with
graphics paths, i.e. by transforming relative paths to absolute paths when
the LaTeX is exported to the temporary directory?  So behind the scenes, LyX
could change:
  \subimport{ relative path }
to
  \import{ absolute path }
when it exports the temporary files...

I will try the parallel and parcolums packages first (of which  
parcolumns seems much more mature at the first glance). They appear to  
provide just what I need, while ledmac/ledpar seem to be overkill for  
me. Yet another package, paracol, was mentioned somewhere, though the  
link there was dead and I could not find anything else about it on the  
web.


Lyx integration would be nice, but I do not think I can do this anytime  
soon. Maybe someone else will: I just noticed that ledmac/ledpar  
support is on the feature poll in the wiki:

LyX does not look into and change things in ERT, and if you think about 
it there is really no way for it to do so reliably. So the only real 
solution would be proper support for this package inside LyX.

Not necessarily. External tenplates can be used as well. I attach a quick 
draft of a template for the \import command, together with an example .lyx 
file. If you want to use it, append the template to the file 
external_templates in your LyX installation. A template for the \subimport 
command can be constructed in the same way. The only thing you need to know 
are all those variables like $$AbsPath etc. These are described in the last 
chapter of the customization manual. With these variables you can construct 
any relative or absolute path you need. The external template definitions 
are a bit awkward, but it is a very powerful mechanism, and if you use an 
existing template as a base it is not difficult to create new ones.

 You can file an enhacement request for this, describing what this package
 achieves and why you think it is worth supporting it.

This might be a good idea nevertheless (for consistency with \input and 
\include). As I understand it, the package works around the uncommon 
handling of relative file names in LaTeX and is worth it to be supported: 
Relative paths in child documents are interpreted relative to the _master 
document_ in LaTeX. This is different from all other programs I know 
(including LyX), where relative paths in child documents are interpreted 
relative to the _child document_.

You probably should look into the ledmac and ledpar packages
http://www.djdekker.net/ledmac/

As far as I know LyX does not support these packages from the GUI,
however you may be content to use ERT to insert raw LaTeX, but it
is also possible that this is easier to do in a good LaTeX editor...

If you really want to use LyX you could probably make an module or
an layout for ledpar, however this may be a bit tricky. If you you 
like a challenge have a look in Customizing in the Help menu in LyX.
