Not a perfect solution...

I copied text from LyX into Microsoft Edge co-pilot following
(https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/bing/do-more-with-ai/how-to-check-your-grammar-using-bing-chat?form=MA13KP).

I used command: "Can you check this text for spelling errors and grammer
errors?", and passed in the text to check *after* a line break (Ctrl+Enter, I
think), and then clicked on the start button.

The results seems to be quite good, although it "fixed" a handful of errors
that were not really errors, but rather words that co-pilot didn't know (some
technical words from dna analysis).
--
I then copied the corrected text from MS Edge back into LyX.

The "downside" of this procedure is that some structure was lost in the copying
back-and-forth process (a slash "/", some bullet symbols in lists, etc.).

Subject: grammar check

Hello,

I've decided to do my note-taking (Zettelkasten) by just using pen & paper and
when I want to produce some context I'll just use LyX - exporting to markdown
when I want something for the web (using Tiki
CMS) or LyX/LaTeX for writing articles (pdfs), slide-presentations, books…

However, being non-native speaker/writer I do find useful to use some grammar
checkers.

To support LanguageTool I've subscribed to Premium version, but found out that
despite being open-source etc. it has its limitations (see e.g.
https://github.com/valentjn/ltex-ls/issues/215).

Otoh, I've a licence for proprietary Antidote
(https://www.druide.com/en) which can check text provided as e.g.
markdown, LaTeX...

Now I wonder if you have any suggestion how to review lyx-gc to either support
newer versions of LanguageTool or to use Antidote's ability to grammar-check
LaTeX markup considering that lyx-gc was using chktex to do the task.

Any other suggestion how to add grammar-check feature to LyX?

Sincerely,
Saša

LyX v2.4.0 RC4 -> Table styles??

2024-04-17 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
I've read large portions of the documentation, and am eager to try the Table
style facility of LyX v2.4.0. I'm on Windows 11, and play with RC4.

When I do Insert/Table…, this is what I get.

[cid:image001.png@01DA9106.80E67870]

In the Style menu, “Default” is the only possible option. If I click on the
[cid:image002.png@01DA9106.80E67870] icon, the only possibility is to choose
the table size.

If I insert the table and right-click on it, everything related to other styles
than the default is grayed out:

[cid:image003.png@01DA9106.B1A0AEE0]

  * I’m confused. What is it that I do that is incorrect?

The script that you call can run any code using the gnuplot "system"
call. That is the same as having access to a shell...

If the gnuplot files that you use are your own, or from one that you trust,
then there is no risk... or actually the same risk that you had if you run the
script outside of LyX.

LyX v2.4 RC4 - keyboard shortcut

2024-04-17 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
I just discovered the “character” shortcuts Alt + C…, e.g., Alt + C R for
mathroman in math.

  * I’m a touch typist, so I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts over menus
  * I’m not a pianist, so I don’t have extremely independent movement of
fingers
  * Because the “Alt” key is on the lefthand side of the keyboard and the “C”
key also is on the lefthand side, this makes it very awkward to hold down the
Alt key and at the same time hold down the C key.
  * This difficulty is increased by that the Alt key should be hit with the
*middle finger* (which must be bent in an awkward way to hit the Alt key). The
problem is much less pronounced with the Ctrl key, which is hit with the pinkie.

Probably not a popular suggestion, but it would be much simpler to use Alt with
a key on the righthand side of the keyboard, e.g., replacing Alt+C with Alt+K.

RE: LyX v2.4.0 RC4 -> Unicode in Program Listing (again...)

2024-04-17 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
OK… I just found I had put the “-shell-escape” string in the wrong cell…

I have now changed the preferences, and inserted this string in both of the
XeTeX and LuaTeX converters from LaTeX to PDF.

Now, I get the (expected) warning that using the “-shell-escape” string is
*dangerous*.

Question 1:

  * Dangerous, because LyX is more likely to *crash*, or
  * Dangerous, because it opens up my computer to hacking??

Experience – here is some listing in LyX:
[cid:image003.png@01DA90D8.A23B6C70]
This expression is taken from a Jupyter Notebook running in VSCode (language:
Julia), where the symbols are created by “\frakm + TAB \dot + TAB = m\dot + TAB
v”
…and here is what it looks like when I use XeTeX/LuaTeX:

[cid:image004.png@01DA90D8.F0F27C50]

Questions 2:

  * Could I expect a better response if I install a font that supports
Unicode, and specifies this font in the fonts scheme of Listings?
  * If I install such a font with Unicode support (e.g., JuliaMono), would
that rule out using XeTeX so that I should use LuaTeX?

Question 3:

  * If I should use LuaTeX, how can I change LyX so that issuing command
Ctrl+r produces the PDF using LuaTeX?

1. I experiment with KOMA script Book

2. I have:

* Upgraded all packages in MikTeX

* Installed Pygments ("pip install Pygments" in Windows Prompt)

* Figured out where the "pygmetize" script is located on my computer,

QUESTION 1: What is wrong? I *did* envoke the “-shell-escape” flag, didn’t I?

RE: LyX 2.4.0 RC4 - bug? Abstract headline is missing + bits and pieces

2024-04-13 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
A difference - perhaps -- between a missing Abstract label and the Chapter
label in *LyX* is that sections headings are quite big compared to the standard
text, so it is easy to see the difference. While the abstract text font is only
marginally smaller than the standard text font, so it is more difficult to see
what it is.

*If* one sets "abstract=on" to enforce "Abstract" to be printed in the PDF
file, it would perhaps be natural if this text also shows up in LyX.
--
Anyways, this is not a major problem -- I can always switch to the standard
article style.
--
Thanks a lot for your great job with creating v. 2.4. I really appreciate all
the work you have put into it, and look forward to start reading the manuals.
Although I've used LyX for some 10 years or so, I think it will be useful to
re-read the documentation to better familiarize myself with what is new.

So far,...
* I greatly appreciate that you have not changed the main parts of the user
interface. I hate it when developers come out with a new version of a tool, and
the user doesn't recognize where the menus are, etc.

* I have already used the improved system for finding missing citations and
broken references.

* The search system looks improved.

* These are the main things I have had time to notice in some 3 days, while
converting a large portion of my key documents from v. 2.3.x to v. 2.4
--

As a person who combines text with loads of math and computer code...
* The Program Listing settings ---
--> Do I set them individually every time I insert a program listing?
--> Or are they document settings, so that if I change one setting (e.g., font
setting), then this takes precedence for the entire document?
--> The above question is related to how to keep consistency in listings...

Also, I'm using a couple of computer languages that are not supported by
Program Listing...
* Modelica (for specifying mathematical models)
* Julia

Is there an ASCII file where it is possible to add specifications for more
computer languages so that they show up in the Program Listing settings?

For some reason, scrclass.inc explicitly removes the heading:

Input stdstruct.inc

Style Abstract
     LabelType No_Label
End

If we're agreed that's wrong, it's easy enough to fix.

As far as I know, KOMA is independent of LyX. So I don't understand why
inserting the label "Abstract" in the LyX *editor* can be seen as overriding
KOMA's default settings.

At least not if the user inserts the command "abstract=on" in the settings.

For the Standard Article style, "Abstract" is inserted into the LyX editor by

Note that the abstract=on option only changes the (pdf) output, it does not

I tested in 2.3.x and it does not show there as well.
So at least the change is not specific to lyx 2.4.

If you change to the standard class then the label is there both for
2.3 and 2.4.

So the question is if the label should be there for consistency.
I am inclined to say yes but I have no strong feelings about this. :-)

RE: LyX 2.4.0 & Jupyter Notebooks

2024-04-10 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
Experimenting with LyX 2.4 RC4... Specifically, I'm testing whether there is
Unicode support.

  * I have successfully pasted in a Unicode character from VSCode into a LyX
2.4 RC4 document, so this seems to work:

[cid:image001.png@01DA8B60.FFE8A950]

Here, the first symbol is produced in VSCode using "\frakm + TAB", and then
pasted into a LyX text line. The second occurrence (slightly different in
form) is produced as in-line math "\mathfrak{m}".

I can also decorate this symbol with a dot on top, "\frakm + TAB \dot + TAB" in
VSCode. When I paste this symbol into LyX, the dot on top of "\frakm + TAB" is
somewhat skewed to the right.

OK - so Unicode in LyX seems to work. It also works if I preview the document
as a PDF file.

--

Next, I try to use Unicode in listings. That does not work at the moment...
Here is what I do:

  *   Insert/Program Listing
  * I paste the "\frakm + TAB" symbol from VSCode into this box.
  * This gives a paste error message:

[cid:image003.png@01DA8B61.C58642D0]

  * I then go to Document/Settings/Listings, and change Syntax Highlighting
Package to *minted*, which provides a message:

[cid:image004.png@01DA8B62.5053B550]

I don't understand this message...

  * I'm on Windows, and the documentation says that Pygments driver is
installed by default (??). Anyways, reading this warning...
  * Where am I supposed to place command "\AtBeginDocument{...}"?? Are we
talking about putting this command in the Document/Settings/LaTeX Preamble
window??? Or should I open the LyX document in an ASCII editor and add the
line... somewhere?
  * What is the "driver command", i.e., the string I'm supposed to insert
instead of `driver`? Is it simply `pygmentize`??

  * Anyways, for now I just neglect this command, and go to
Tools/Preferences/File Handling/Converters, and scroll down to

[cid:image002.png@01DA8B63.945591F0]

Here I have changed Converter from `pdflatex $$i` to what is shown above.

When I go back to the document and insert a listing, and then paste the Unicode
symbol into the listing, I get the same error message with paste error as shown
at the top of this e-mail.

--

So - I'm stuck. The only possible reason for the problem now are:

  * I need to find the correct place to insert the string
"\AtBeginDocument..." string with the correct `driver` (whatever that is), and
live with the warning of mint & `-shell-escape` causing a security risk.
Perhaps this will solve the problem.
  * Or: it is not possible to use Unicode characters in LyX 2.4 listings.

Any suggestions?

I did not mean that you will use R, but that you can check how knitr scripts
establish two-way communication street and reuse it for jupyter instead of R

Thanks.

I don't use R, so I guess knitr is not useful to me. [In in the JU corner of
Jupyter...] There is also Quarto which is developed in the R community,
although it can also be used with other languages. Don't know how Quarto scales
to large documents, though... My experience is that Jupyter Notebooks start to
become slow with documents in the order of some 30 pages (i.e., with plenty of
plots), while LyX is still quick with documents in the order of 1000 pages.

You might also want to check how knitr integrates into lyx (basically embedding
R code into lyx).

RE: LyX 2.4.0 & Jupyter Notebooks

2024-04-09 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
OK -- so I could just as well start using RC4?

I'm not super software savvy, so I have been hesitant not knowing:
* Can I install RC4 and still use LyX 2.7.1?
* Do I have to uninstall RC4 and install the official release when it becomes
available?
* With 2.7.1, I have used MikTeX. Should I still use MikTeX, or use something
else? (Does MikTeX also come with LuaTeX, XeTeX, TeXLive, or whatever?)

If these three bullet points do not cause any problems, I may try to download
and use RC4.

I don't think there have been any major changes in that machinery. And there
definitely won't be any before the final release. Changes from RC4 to the
official release are going to be pretty minor (as one would hope).

The most plausible way to do this would be to use an external inset.
That's the way that Lilypond files (music) are included, for example.
Such insets are user definable. Basically, you tell LyX how to convert the file
to something LaTeX can process. This is discussed in section
7.1 of the Embedded Objects manual. You can use the existing xtemplate files as
a starting point, too.

LyX 2.4.0 & Jupyter Notebooks

2024-04-09 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
Is there a way to import Jupyter Notebooks into LyX 2.4.0 (when v. 2.4.0 is
released)?

I'm particularly interested in the possibility to...

* link the notebooks into LyX so that I always get the latest
version/computations in the notebook, i.e., preferably not a static import

* inclusion of mark-up text with headlines, math, etc.

* inclusion of input and output cells, with figures, etc.

* linked-in notebooks would be multipage. Perhaps it should be possible to
embed the notebooks in some theorem-like environment.

OK -- don't know if this is possible, but it would go a long way towards
getting a literal programming environment.

Riki,

Just upgraded from 2.3.7.1 to 2.4.0~RC4 on Slackware64-15.0 on a ThinkPad T430;
no bugs seen crawling around. The issues that bugged me in 2.3.6.2 and
2.3.7.1 (not finding biblatex.sty and biber, needing to use the File menu to
export a pdflatex because c-x h wouldn't work) are gone.

I had a concern about Tools -> Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Display showed
Default when I use emacs turned out that (at least on my system) emacs key
chords are the default.

Congratulations and many thanks to all devs.

Best regards,

Rich

If you by "current release" mean LyX 2.3.7 (of January 2023), have you looked

LyX 2.3.7 & BibLaTeX?

2023-10-27 Thread Bernt Lie via lyx-users
I'm on LyX 2.3.7, eagerly awaiting the release of 2.4 (whenever that will be).

While I'm waiting, I'm starting to use Zotero to manage bibliography files, and
had some help from a more IT knowledgeable colleague. He set up Zotero to store
bibliography files as BibLaTeX. Some experience:

  1. In the past, I have used the AGSM bibliography style file. This style
doesn't seem to work with BibLaTeX?? Is there another, similar bibliography
style that works with BibLaTeX (i.e., Harvard style, etc.)?? [One change from
BibTeX to BibLaTeX seems to be change of field name "year" to field name
"date"??)
  2. One *bad* (?) experience with Zotero is that it *changed* all the
bibliography *label* names. I assume this means that all past LyX/LaTeX
documents I have written will show up with *broken* references if I switch to
the new *.bib file generated by Zotero.

To repeat: my question is:

  * Is there a BibLaTeX compatible bibliography style file with LyX 2.3.7
that works similarly to how AGSM works?
  * Or do I have to wait for LyX 2.4 for BibLaTeX compatibility?

Thanks,
BL

Newcommand -- make symbol independent of font size

I'm trying to define the "plimsoll" symbol (used to indicate thermodynamic

\newcommand\plimsoll{{\circ\kern-0.495em-}}

Seems like a good number ("0.495" -- I've also tried with "0.415") depends on
the font size... Here is what it looks like in a Section heading (ok with
"0.415"):

And here is what it looks like in displayed equation (ugly):

  * How can I make the definition so that it looks fine in any font size?

I suspect that the problem could be related with the fonts you use. Not all

Sometimes it is a mater of choosing the right font,

I think it's just a matter of choosing the right "theorems..." module:

Scroll down to the end to see the various "theorems..." options. They are well
explained, and I guess you should find one that does what you want.

Hello Bernt,

Note that there are no theorem layouts that are defined in the article class,
you are probably using a theorem module.

Go to Documents->Settings-Modules and see which module you are using.
What you are looking for is a module that defines the theorems to be numbered
by type, so for example you can select the Theorems (Numbered By Type) module.

If you also want the theorems to be conutered within another counter (say
section), then there are also modules for that too.

To get more information about modules, you can read section 3.1.2.3 LyX's
User's Guide, which can be found in Help->User's Guide.

There are also a few examples for the usage of modules in different sections.

2020-10-30 Thread Bernt Lie
I use LyX with MikTeX on Windows daily. It is not problem-free, so I'm open to
test out TeXLive (or LuaTeX?).

The important questions wrt. TeX distribution is whether the choice *limits*...
* available styles/packages/etc. that can be used,
* stability,
* ease of use
* speed of operation

The LyX project itself does not have an official view about TeX distributions,
but our experience has tended to be that TeXLive is more reliable than MikTeX
on Windows.

RE: Simplify complex graph from matplotlib

2020-10-01 Thread Bernt Lie
I had a similar problem lately: I produced a scatterplot using matplotlib (or
rather: the matplotlib back-end for Plots in Julia), and stored the file as
*.svg – with a file size of some 5 MB. I tried to subsample the plot, e.g., by
using only 10% of the points. Still a relatively large plot file.

In the end, I saved the file as a *.png file, which took some 150-200 kB. Not
as pretty, but close enough.

Don't know if this is more appropriate for lyx or mpl. I have a couple of
graphs with a large number of points. They were exported from matplotlib as
pdf, and produced large files. After including in lyx, the resulting pdf takes
a long time to load.

The plots don't really need so many points at all. Other than going back to
the mpl source to plot fewer points, is there a way to fix this?

Thanks,
Neal

RE: LyX 2.3.5

2020-06-10 Thread Bernt Lie
Hm… here is what I did:

  1. I first installed MikTeX to the default path that it suggested, and used
my private path for LyX. No success.
  2. Next, I deleted LyX, and tried to re-install it to the default path. But
the default path never showed up; no matter whether I deleted every file
related to LyX, it still stuck to the original path that I had defined.
  3. I then entered “regedit”. I deleted every mention of LyX in various forms
from “regedit”.
  4. Next, I tried to reinstall LyX. Now it suggested a default path. I
installed LyX to this default path.
  5. Now, it seems to work.

In summary: LyX doesn’t properly clean up the registry when I uninstall it.

Another observation…

  * Before I deleted the registry elements and installed LyX to my private
directory, installation of LyX took some one hour or something.
  * After I deleted elements from “regedit”, the installation took a couple
of minutes.

With MikTeX, I do the following:

  1. Choose to install it under directory

  2. Settings: Preferred paper size – A4, Install missing pagackages
on-the-fly: Yes
  3. After MikTeX has installed packages, I check for updates. There were 8
updates, which I installed from “A random package repository on the internet”.

Next, I install LyX 2.3.5:

  1. I install LyX in directory “C:\Program_Files\LyX\LyX_2_3”
  2. The LyX installer finds MikTeX at
“C:\Program_Files\MikTeX\MikTeX_2_9\miktex\bin\x64”.

  1. LyX takes some time to install, and downloads some missing packages:

  1. When LyX has been installed, I try to open a template. Result:

I do a search for file IEEEtran.cls, and it is there:

Questions:

  1. Why doesn’t LyX find this file?
  2. Is the problem that I have not chosen the default installation path of
LyX and/or MikTeX?

[KZLG]
I just had the same error earlier this morning. From my experience:

  1. Probably because the filename database has not been updated. This may
happen when you install MikTeX as an administrator (user who has administrative
rights), but call LyX as that same user but without invoking his administrative
rights; or if you have followed some variant of this.
In general, it is best to install as an administrator but call your
applications as an ordinary user (i.e. user without any administrative rights),
and so keep a strict difference between the two types of users.
  2. Perhaps. You might try it if you cannot follow the advice under A.

It's been quite a while since I used MikTeX, but I vaguely recall that
installation options included a modest size package with common classes and
something of an omnibus installation with all sorts of packages (and a large
footprint). Bernt, is it possible that you did a full installation in the case
that the document class was available and a smaller installation in the case

I'm assuming here that basic classes (such as article.cls) remain available

No, LyX will fail again as soon as Inkscape 1.0 is installed (and you need to
reconfigure). Inkscape 1.0 also does not work with LyX for other reasons
(replacing the reconfigure script does not suffice to fix that).

I suggest you only upgrade to Inkscape 1.0 after LyX 2.3.5 is out (which will

This will be fixed in LyX 2.3.5.

LyX configuration needed to be adapted to inkscape 1.0 (which changed the
registry entry among other things).

Workaround is to downgrade Inkscape to 0.96.

Directory for BibTeX style files -- where do I set it?

2020-03-31 Thread Bernt Lie
I’m using LyX 2.3.4.3 on Windows 10, with MikTeX distribution 2.9.

Lately, LyX has had problems with finding the location of *.bst styles in

find the directory of the relevant *.bst files. Also, the entire path of the
directory shows up in the style field:
[cid:image002.jpg@01D60749.26083F10]

In documents, the Style shows up without the path (e.g., just “agsm”).

Question:

  1. What is going on?
  2. Where in LyX do I set the path for *.bst files so that LyX lists all
styles?

[I also tried to update MikTeX, but it has one of it’s hick-ups. Tells me
“Something went wrong”, and then ask me whether I want to se more information
(“Yes”, “No”, etc.). When I click on “No”, the same message pops up 2 more
times... Very annoying.]

Question:

  * How can I insert this table into LyX?
  * I want the table to have the same type of preview as Tables I set up
manually inside of LyX
  * I want the table to be a floating table.
  * Such tables may be large, so I may want to make it multi-page, and
possibly rotate it.

Example:

\begin{tabular}{rrr} \hline\hline \textbf{Temperature [K]} & \textbf{Pressure
[bar]} & \textbf{Specific volume liq [m3/kg.1e3]} \\ \texttt{Float64} &
\texttt{Float64} & \texttt{Float64} \\\hline 273.15 & 0.00611 & 1.0 \\ 275.0 &
0.00697 & 1.0 \\ 280.0 & 0.0099 & 1.0 \\ 285.0 & 0.01387 & 1.0 \\ 290.0 &
0.01917 & 1.001 \\\hline\hline \end{tabular}

Can I insert the table within LyX? Or do I have to insert the table in a LyX
document and insert the code via an ASCII editor?

Thanks for suggestions!

Thanks for all your hard work!

I downloaded the *.exe install version on Windows 10 using Edge (Chromium).
When I tried to open the downloaded file, Edge told me that if I opened the
file, it could destroy my computer.

I assume this is just a warning because the *.exe file has not been registered
in a way that Edge can recognize it??

Without a MWE on which to experiment, it's hard to be certain. A couple of
possibilities come to mind. One is to replace the 2x1 inner table with a
multiline math formula (such as a "gathered" environment). Another is to click
in a cell in the first column¸ click Edit > Table Settings (or right click and
do the equivalent), set a fixed width for the first column and a vertical
alignment of "Middle" in the column settings dialog.

I have attached a minimal LyX document with the *.svg file that I use. In the
figure path of LyX, I have put the figure in a subdirectory “figs” – which can
easily be changed.
I’ve tested a bit more, and it is the insertion of the *figure* that causes the
problem. My “trick” of getting multiline math by inserting a table within a
table cell works fine.
So: is it possible to vertically center the figure at the insertion point?

-B
What I proposed above works. Put the cursor in the "Geometry" cell, right
click, select Settings..., and in the Column settings section of the Table
Settings tab set a fixed width for the column. That enables the Vertical
alignment control, which you set to Middle. You might want to horizontally
center as well; that's up to you.
I've attached a modified version of the MWE.

Paul

Thanks! I get it! I need to *specify width* in order to *enable vertical
alignment* -- at least for cells with graphics.

Either there is a typographical error in the URL for the mirror, or it is

“My” CTAN mirror has worked in the past. Must have gone out of “business”. I

LyX 2.3.3 & chapter appendices

2020-01-09 Thread Bernt Lie
Happy New Year to LyX:ers.

I’m about to reorganize some lecture notes, and would like to have the
possibility of chapter appendices.

Does anyone have experience with how to achieve this?

· How to add needed packages? (E.g., pointers to help files – there are
quite a few of , and it is sometimes difficult to find the relevant
information.)

Perhaps do one and export to LaTeX and compile.

If that works, find how and where this is inserted (in the .tex file) and add
another one manually.

If that compiles, run a tex2lyx on it. If that works, it should be a
triviality to generate this semiautomagically :-)-O

2a) and 2b) are possible and explained in the pdfpages manual :-)-O

LyX & compiling conference proceedings from PDF files

2019-11-30 Thread Bernt Lie
I’m attempting to compile conference proceedings using LyX 2.3.3.

I have successfully inserted one PDF-file into LyX (Insert/File/External
Material). Some questions:

1. Do I have to insert the files one by one (some 40 files), or can I
insert all at the same time? [I guess I can experiment with this...]

2. The pdf files are without headers/footers, and without page numbers.

a. Is it possible to have the files show up at 100% size (they are A4)
within my A4 size LyX file, and overlay headers and footes defined in the LyX
file?

b. Is it possible to overlay page numbers from LyX, i.e., using a global
counter in LyX (say, preface with roman page numbering i-iv, then papers with
arab page numbers, say Paper 1 p. 1-6, Paper 2 p. 7-11, etc.)?

Thanks for your suggestions!

It is a basic question :-).

Use Ctrl+m to switch to in-line math. Use Ctrl+Shift+m to switch to displayed

Use the following sequences:

  *   Ctrl+m  [switches to math]
  *   \lim + space + Shift+_ + x + \rightarrow + space + 0 + space + f + Alt+(

RE: preparing math exams

2019-04-23 Thread Bernt Lie
The free drawing program Inkscape is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
There are extensions (plug-ins) for Inkscape that allows you to write LaTeX
math in Insckape and have it generate math expressions as drawing objects – I
use WriteTeX.

The manual for the latest version of LyX also indicates that it is possible to
write LaTeX syntax in text fields in Inkscape, import the resulting SVG file
into LyX, and have it typeset as LaTeX math in LyX. I haven’t figured out how
to do that, but that would be the ideal solution (in the sense that one could
make LaTeX text in figures have the body font size of the main text...).

Inkscape uses SVG (Structured Vector Graphics) as native file format. This
works mostly fine.

To prepare functions, etc.: use a math script language (e.g., MATLAB, Python,
Julia; the two latter are free – personally, I use Julia) and produce a plot,
then save it as an svg file, importat it into Inkspace, and modify it to your
hearts desire... changing colors, line types, line thickness, axes color, etc.,
and add text if you need.

2019-02-11 Thread Bernt Lie
I use LyX 2.3.1-1 on Windows 10. Two questions related to LyX and inserted
Program Listing:

In the Settings, I can choose Language:
[cid:image002.jpg@01D4C218.4CF8E290]

  * If I make my own definition for syntax highlighting of a programming
language (say, Julia or Modelica), where in the directory tree to I put that
definition so that it shows up in the pull-down menu of "Language"?
  * If I want to insert a link to a file instead of the code itself in the
Program Listing window, how do I do that?

Any hints are welcome, e.g., which help manual to look into, etc.

LyX 2.3.1: bug with preview of \oiint... what about LyX 2.3.2?

2019-01-15 Thread Bernt Lie
I’m still using LyX 2.3.1 on one PC. There appears to be a bug on Win 10 64bit,
latest version. If I insert \oiint in a math expression, nothing is displayed.

However, the preview works: If I click outside of the math expression, I get
the expected result.

For your interest, I recently uploaded version 3 of my diffcoeff package
to CTAN. This provides a command \diff for writing differential
coefficients (derivatives) with multiple options for tweaking the
display, and a command \dl for writing differentials with an option for
inserting a specified amount of space before the differential --
something you might want to do in an integral for instance to separate
the integrand from the dx.

Something I always do, and it might help you too. Before including any
Inkscape-constructed image in LyX or HTML, I always
File->Clean_up_document and File->Save_as->Plain_SVG. This tends to get
all the "inkscapisms" out of the image. Whenever I have problems with text not
fitting in boxes in the ultimate viewer (a web page or PDF), I always convert
text to curves and then once again clean up and save as plain.

I'm a little confused. I have LyX 2.3.1 installed on two computers, both

Some arrows show up with "broken neck" on one computer, but not on the other. I
sync the LyX documents and the figures among my computers using OneDrive.

On the computer where the "broken neck" persists, if I open the drawing in
Inkscape, ungroup elements, and group them again before saving the drawing,
then the drawing becomes ok. Puzzling.

Occationally, the arrows are "broken" also in Inkscape. This typically happens
if I have slanted lines, typically different from a multiple of 45 degrees, and
sometimes if I select several lines and chose arrow on all lines

The graphic from the tickets shows up incorrectly in 2.2.3 but fine on
2.3.1 under Win10. If I understood the fix correctly, then it is to use the
converter from SVG -> PNG instead of the qt internal one. Hence it should be

LyX & svg files

2018-11-23 Thread Bernt Lie
I use LyX 2.3.1 on Windows 10, 64 bit.

It seems like LyX sometimes has problems handling SVG files, specifically lines
with arrow heads.

Here is one example; the original file in Inkscape:

[cid:image003.jpg@01D4833F.16CE63B0]

In Inkscape, this looks fine. However, when I import this svg file into a LyX
float figure, this is what it looks like:

[cid:image004.jpg@01D4833F.16CE63B0]

Observe that some of the arrowheads seems to have a “broken neck”...

If I generate a pdf from Inkscape and import the drawing as a pdf into LyX,
then there is no problems. But then the preview in LyX looks pixelated.

Q: where is the problem? Is it Inkscape that uses corrupted svg files, or is it
LyX that doesn’t properly handle arrow heads?

RE: PDF graphics is blurred in LyX when scaled

2018-11-12 Thread Bernt Lie
I think that the problem here is that even when the imported graphics is *.svg
file or a *.pdf file generate from a *.svg file (e.g., using Inkscape) -- and
hence definitely is vector graphics, the preview in LyX often looks blurred
when the LyX preview is scaled up to be visible on high resolution screens.

As an example, the following drawing has been made in Inkscape as purely vector
graphics drawing (*.svg, saved as *.pdf at 300 dpi). When scaling it to 200% in
LyX, it starts to look muddled – LaTeX math which is produced as vector
graphics starts to look unreadable on screen:

[cid:image003.jpg@01D47A8E.3F65AE00]

Maybe this helps if I save the pdf file at a higher resolution? I.e., maybe
Inkscape converts the drawing to bitmapped PDF?

I would have loved to import the file as a *.svg file, but the LyX previewer
and PDF generator sometimes messes up the arrows :-( .

I sympathize with those who need auto correction. For myself:
* I'm decent with touch typing
* However, when typing on "cheap" keyboards, I do more mistakes... some
keyboards may fail to register a key stroke if hit slightly off center

However, I have become very sceptical towards auto correction based on
experience with Word+Outlook and smartphones...
* Word tries to auto detect language, and does a poor job - resulting in
numerous problems
* I have tried to tailor make Office auto correction, but my settings often
have been reset the next time I use the tool, or after upgrades.
* Auto correction may introduce bad mistakes that I sometimes don't see... my
smartphone once auto-changed the name of an ice cream chain to the Spanish word
for one-night stand in a communication in Spanish... which was not taken well...
* I often use technical words that are not in the dictionary; auto correction
would then be disastrous.

So, for me, auto-correction would be a total turn-off unless I could turn it
off, and *know* that my setting was not changed by "the system".

I would rather live with my few mistakes, than use a system that introduce
arbitrary mistakes that were not intended.

Sorry for jumping into the discussion, but I think some people here are missing

No. The computer would not _rearrange_ letters. It would effect a
string subsitution, oblivious to whether any of the letters in the
replacement string appeared in the original string.

It doesn't just happen. The screen displays what you entered.

> Is that mistake a matter of 'learning'?

Yes, unequivocally.

Not necessarily. There are several forms of mild dyslexia in which the person
swaps letters or even "fingers" (typing an "o" instead of an "a," for example).
I know this from experience because I have the problem. And yes, working hard
and being attentive solves many (not all, mind you) of the "accidents," but
still... I've been writing in computers almost every day for the last 30 years
and still have many silly "typos:" in my case it's not a matter of practice.

And that's just a first point. An autocorrect tool can also be useful for
people without those problems: As a matter of fact, LyX actually perform an
autocorrect every time it changes two dashes into an en-dash and three into an
em-dash. Maybe this feature could be generalized. Think of changing the first
character of a phrase into caps, for example, or setting a substitution pattern
to change a couple of characters into a symbol or a longer text you need to
insert several times in the document. It doesn't need to be something fixed (in
fact, it shouldn't!), just a table that any user can fill at will: first
column, what you want to substitute, second column, the substitution, and then
the system perform those changes in real time. LibreOffice has such tool and
yes, most of the elements in their default table are just a list of stupid
emojis, but that does not mean the feature is stupid.

Just my two cents!

Regards,
Ricardo

Typing is a learned skill, involving multiple processes. I don't know
(or much care) which process you've not properly learned.

In that case, you need to learn otherwise.

If it's truly a matter of your not understanding the difference
between “informazioen” and “informazione”, then you need to look into
how better to learn orthography.

If necessary. But most adults wouldn't need years.

Yes, I confirm that this fixes the problem:
* In "Documents > Settings... > Formats", I change "Default output set to" from
"PDF(XeTeX)" to "Default".
NOTE: this does not have immediate affect! I need to:
* save the document with this settings change,
* close LyX,
* open LyX
* open the changed document

I'm curious:
* why on earth should the behavior in LyX be related to the chosen output
format?
* does changing from "PDF(XeTeX)" to "Default" have any side effects?

Thanks. I think I have narrowed down the problem to "Default output set to "
with "PDF (XeTeX)" in

Document > Settings... > Formats.

Can you confirm that the problem goes away if you use the "Default"
output format? (To force LyX to regenerate the preview you can just save the
file under a new name after you made the change.)

Here is my "template_test.lyx" file, which contains displayed math with \text{}
containing letter "ø". This letter is not displayed wieh I have enabled
"instant preview". It does show up when preview in LyX is turned off. In any
way, it shows up in the generated PDF file.

Still, it annoys me that it doesn't show up when I turn on "instant preview".

Any clues? I use the latest version of Windows 10 (v 1803) 64 bit, LyX 2.3.1 64

Suggestions are appreciated.

LyX 2.3.1: bug in "\text" mode of equations

2018-10-30 Thread Bernt Lie
I use LyX 2.3.1 (64bit) on 64bit Win 10, latest version, and have Instant
preview turned on.

I need to insert some text in an equation. Two options:
* \text{my text}
* \mathrm{text}

With \text{}, space is automatically handled. With \mathrm{}, I need to use the
escape character (backslash) to get space. There are probably also some spacing
differences -- I assume \text{} is the correct choice if I write text and not
math.

There is a problem with \text{} if I use Instant preview *on*...: if I include
character "ø" in the text string, it shows if I turn Instant preview *off*, but
is removed if I turn Instant preview *off*.

The generated PDF file *includes* the symbol "ø", but ... it does not show up
in the preview with Instant preview turned *on*.

Presumably, this is a problem with other non-English ASCII characters, too?

$p$... either Ctrl+m (in-line) or Ctrl+shift+m (displayed)... then p, then
Space to get out of math mode.

$\cal{M}$... same as above to enter math mode... then \cal + Space to get into
the {} bracket... then M, then Space to get out of the {} bracket, followed by
Space to get out of math mode.

RE: LyX -- search & replace in math

  * Since they _are_ different, depending of the 'Ignore format', why would
one expect to behave the same? That does of course not mean, that there are no
errors in the code.

That is reasonable.

  * If you check "Ignore format", the searching is done on text which would
be exported as normal text. The other case is searching on text which would be
suitable as input for latex.

This explanation is not very clear. In a text document, I checked “Ignore
format”, and when searching, LyX found none of the expressions I searched for
[replace $p$ by $\mathfrak{p}$]. When I unchecked “Ignore format”, LyX worked
as expected.

[Still, it is not clear what is meant by “format”.]

Next, I tested this on a much longer document (close to 700 pages). With
unchecking “Ignore format” and searching for $\cal{M}$, LyX skipped this LaTeX
code in a table at the beginning of the document (a “nomenclature” table), but
found this code in a paragraph in the middle of the document – and also found
several subsequent occurrences.

Finally, I searched for the same LaTeX string [$\cal{M}$], but this time with
*checked* “Ignore format”. Contrary to in the test document (searching for
$p$), this time, LyX found at least one occurrence – but not the first one
found with unchecked “Ignore format”.
--
To summarize:

  * Searching for $\cal{M}$ in *math*, and with unchecked “Ignore format” did
not find occurrences in table cells, but hopefully found occurrences in text
flows.
  * With checked “Ignore format”, LyX sometimes found LaTeX math code, and
sometimes not.

That does of course not mean, that there are no errors in the code.

If you check "Ignore format", the searching is done on text which would be

The other case is searching on text which would be suitable as input for latex.

...doesn't work perfectly, though...

If I have text with $p$ and $\mathfrak{p}$, then if I try to replace
$\mathfrak{p}$ with $p$, everything is ok.

HOWEVER, if I try to replace $p$ with $\mathfrak{p}$, then the latter becomes
$\mathfrak{\mathfrak{p}}$...

In an ideal system, I guess $\mathfrak{\mathfrak{p}}$ should be simplified to
$\mathfrak{p}$, etc. for similar cases.

Hi Scott,

I have tested possibilities. What I need to do, works if I *check*:

* Case sensitive (standard menu)
* Ignore format (settings menu)
* Search only in maths (settings menu)

Thanks for tip!

Hi Bernt,

Go to Edit > Find & Replace (Advanced), and under the Settings tab of the panel
that pops up, see the options "Ignore format" (I guess you want unchecked), or
maybe only "Search only in maths" is relevant for your case.

LyX -- search & replace in math

2018-10-26 Thread Bernt Lie
I use Windows 10, 64bit latest version with LyX 2.3.1.

Question:
* I want to replace symbol $l$ in equations with symbol $\ell$.
* How can I restrict the search to *equations*, and avoid all letters
"L" in the document?

LyX & graphics/figure preview

2018-10-09 Thread Bernt Lie
Previews of graphics in floating figures tend to be small and sometimes of very
poor resolution. If I increase the magnification in LyX, the figures look
really ugly.

Is there a way to increase the preview quality? (The original files are
typically either *.svg or *.pdf.)

Re: References and Umlaute

2018-07-05 Thread Bernt Lie
In the JabRef field, I would use LaTeX code, e.g:

G{\"u}nther

Use double quote " . Avoid two apostrophes '' ; avoid two backticks `` ...

To add to what was said. I only use JabRef with LyX/LaTeX and have generally
had better luck specifying accent marks using LaTeX commands rather than
Unicode characters.

Sorry for formatting, on mobile.

Re: bibliography citation and -und

2018-06-01 Thread Bernt Lie
I would guess that W has used "und" as author separator in his BibTeX files
(instead of "and"), and wonders whether there is a way for LyX to understand
this??
