Re: Strange Pacer Question

2023-12-28 Thread John White
I don't think so. What I am looking into is this: Pacer will only accept pdf
files. If those who
export to pdf from within a word document don't have to "flatten" the document
before
uploading to Pacer, while those who use lyx are forced to flatten any document
imported from a
Word doc before uploading to Pacer, I want to let the Pacer folks know this and
suggest that
Pacer not default to Word.

Word is so dominant that even in Nevada State Courts we are required to convert
any editable
document to Word before the judge will even look at it. If there must be a
standard here, I think
it should be an open source standard. Courts should not be in the business of
requiring
everyone to use Word (or any other proprietary product).

Re: Strange Pacer Question

2023-12-28 Thread John White
Hi el,

If I get a Word doc, it opens in libreoffice, which allows for export to pdf.
If I recall, I generally
either highlight the words involved while in libreoffice and paste directly to
lyx or instead export
to pdf, highlight the relevant portions of the pdf and paste to lyx.

It took me forever to get the ps2pdf right (so it would become pleading paper,
with a vertical
line followed by line numbers to the left of the page. When I use anything
else I have to load
pleading paper and use that.

I plan to try your PDF5 trick this weekend.

Re: Strange Pacer Question

2023-12-28 Thread John White
I use lyx 2.3.6 on my debian (bullseye) system I often file in Pacer, the
database used by the US
federal court system. Normally, I just do regular lyx stuff and once the file
is ready, export with
pst2pdf (to insure that line numbers exist at the left side of each page) and
upload to Pacer.

HOWEVER, I often get files from other attorneys who use microsoft Word, which I
import into lyx
and reformat.

To file in Pacer, the document must be "flattened." This poses no problem with
files created in
lyx. However, whenever I import a Word file and convert it to lyx, Pacer balks
and refuses to
accept the document unless I "flatten" it. If I am at the office, I "flatten"
it by printing out the
lyx document and, using the copier, scan it back to me. I then can upload that
scanned file to
pacer. If I am at home, I "flatten" it by using "$ pdf2ps orig.pdf - | ps2pdf
- flattened.pdf", which
usually works.

Pacer itself uses Microsoft Word and brags about it incessantly.

My question is this: Do those who use Microsoft Word also have to "flatten"
files before filing in
the federal courts or does Pacer just accept Microsoft Word files "as is"? If
so, there might be
some sort of anti-trust implications in all this.

Though mine still works fine, none of the updated computers will generate pdfs.

I use lyx exclusively in my law practice. I like this list but find reading
through the lyx posts in order to get to the bottom tiring.
Perhaps, while sticking to bottom posting, the sender of a replying
email should be encouraged to delete a portion of the prior text no
longer necessary, keeping enough to maintain context? This would
speed up browsing by those lurking around (like me) without violating
the bottom posting requirement.

Frankly, I almost always read posts by Dr Eberhard W Lisse
as he doesn't usually bottom post and is very lyx-
knowledgeable.

to
thank Paul for his help and to let him know that I fixed it by completely

alt-T gives nothing.

"ls -l

Thanks again. I no longer get an error message. Lyx just opens without the top
tool bar. I
think its probably the menu bar that I am missing (the one that lets you open
recent files
and save a lyx file to various pdf versions). This is pretty confusing for me.
I may wait til
Christmas is over before looking into it further. Right now what I do is email
the lyx file to
my secretary who can print it out fine.

Re: top tool bar not available

2022-12-21 Thread John White
Thank you Paul very much for the suggestion. It caused me to think that
something
might be wrong with permissions. So I opened lyx in root and the top tool bar
shows. It
only doesn't show when I open it on a regular, non-root command line or from
the lyx
icon.

I am not sure where the system menu is. Lyx can be used without the top menu
bar but it
will only print to one pdf version.

top tool bar not available

2022-12-19 Thread John White
So I removed lyx and lyx common and reinstalled on my debian
bullfrog system. This is what I get now when trying to open Lyx:

/usr/share/applications/lyx.desktop is not a readable LYX document.

Any suggestions?

2022-05-12 Thread John White
Thank you Paul,

alt-T opens the Tools menu just fine, so I will likely try it without a fixed
Top Toolbar for a
while as that might give me more typing space. So you answered my lyx question.
 Thanks
much.

For what its worth, I note that my default.ui is all by itself in
root>user>share>lyx>ui.

default.ui is also in my /usr/share/lyx/ui/default.ui), along with
stdtoolbars.inc,
stdmenus.inc and stdcontext.inc, but lyx no longer points there for some reason.

Not sure why my lyx is accessing root>user>share>lyx>ui but am happy that I can
now
access the tools.

But just for the fun of it I ran your bookoff.lys on my stock lyx, making no

Re: Xubuntu 20.04: Qt Library

2020-12-12 Thread John White
This sounds like an excellent way to keep lyx up to date, but I am clueless
about alternative repositories. If they require github, I'm not interested.
Lyx 2.3.2 ships with Debian Buster and it works fine for my purposes. I have
learned that adding software versions not in the Buster repository sometimes
causes problems. So I will probably keep using 2.3.2 until next summer or so
when, I expect, Debian should come out with a new version.

Thanks Doc,

Lyx is working just fine now, and for years last past, so I will follow your
suggestion and leave well enough alone. I am not a "cutting edge" guy. I am
more a "prehistoric sledgehammer" kind of guy. I don't even have a cell phone,

I have marked this email as important as I might need it in the future.

I have used lyx for many years and like Charlie just go to the Debian
(currently
Buster) repository and download it (currently repository has 2.3.2-1). Works
fine
with texlive. However I keep hearing that the QT people's efforts to monetize
QT
may start to give lyx problems.

Re: Section fonts-there must be an easier way

2019-11-25 Thread John White
I am doing a koma document with sections. The section font is too
large. So I go to each section manually, highlight it and change font
from larger to large. And if there are subsections, they are now same
size as sections, so I have to manually reduce font size of sub-sections.

Isn't there an easier way to do this? Isn't there a way to globally change
section and sub-section font size?

Thanks for any input.

fixing tiny font on laptop

2019-11-15 Thread John White

For some unknown reason, my lyx fonts on all files suddenly
became too tiny to read. Internet says use mouse wheel to fix,
which works fine (I borrowed one). But my laptop doesn't have a
mouse or a mouse wheel. Any alternative way of getting normal
font size back on a mouse-less laptop? I may not be able to
borrow a mouse next time this happens.

middle
of the page.

I would much rather print with a lautex pdf all the time. Any suggestions as
to how I can get lautex to start line numbers at the top of the page?

After reconfiguring, I would save one of the problem files to a usb stick and
see
if lyx will open it from there.

el,

Any chance that you could attach a .lyx file with an short example of how the
preamble would look? For lazy latex newbies like me. If this would take too
much
time, forget this request. I will probably eventually learn enough myself. Or
I could
probably pigeon-hole my college professor latex-expert son-in-law when I visit

Background doesn't work.

2019-08-25 Thread John White
I could have sworn I sent something like this to the lyx users list yesterday,
but don't
see it in my "sent" file. So here goes, possibly again.

I have the following code in Document>settings>LaTeX preamble (Lyx 2.3.2).

\usepackage{background}
\backgroundsetup{
   contents={%
  \includegraphics[width=\pagewidth]{lines.pdf}
   },
   angle=0,
   scale=1.0,
   opacity=1.0
}

I also have lines.pdf in the same subdirectory. See attached. However, lyx
does not
see lines.pdf.

Does anyone know how I can get lyx to see and open lines.pdf in the background.
 I
also tried watermark, but could only see DRAFT in watermark.

Can't get background to work

2019-08-24 Thread John White
Lyx doesn't see lines.pdf (see attached). If I could get to that point I could
probably take it the rest of the way. I tried watermark too, and got the
default
DRAFT ok but could not make it see text.

My goal is to have a papers generated with lyx to, when printed, have evenly
spaced, double spaced numbers shown on the left side. I don't like the line
generator program as it numbers every line irregularly (i.e. is too specific).
I just
need 28 double spaced lines running down the left side of each page. (pleading
paper).

Any suggestions are appreciated.

lyxblogger

2019-08-10 Thread John White
Speaking of lyxhtml, does anyone still use lyxblogger for their
wordpress site? It apparently has not been tended to for many years.

I am so used to writing in lyx that I find it easier to first write the blog in
lyx and then cut and paste it into wordpress, therein losing some of the
formatting.

Lyxblogger purports to keep the formatting when posting to wordpress.
It seems to still work, sort of, but hangs up when accessing the
wordpress site.

Re: 14 point type (solved)

2019-07-05 Thread John White
Cause I am old. Habit over 20 years or more with lovely lyx.

I don't see a Lualatex in the export menu. I see pdf (luatex), which I am
using on
my 2.3.2 lyx version, and latex (luatex) which I have never tried.

I like Noto Serif too. If you get the chance, please tell your friend that
italicized Noto
serif text prints as regular (non-italicized text) when exported via pdf
(luatex) using
Koma script article on my Debian stretch machine. Italics are not lost when,
all else
being the same, I switch from Noto serif to new century schoolbook.

As an experiment, I typed two sentences from an actual opinion of our Court
(presuming it uses its own rules) and compared them to the lyx pdf version,
using
14pt custom with koma script article and 12pt base with regular article class
and it
is clear that the 12pt base is too small. However, the font the Court uses is
slightly
smaller than the koma-script 14. As the rule says 14pt "or larger" I think I
will stick
with your koma-script 14pt, even if I have to trash a two or three paragraphs
of
my amazing prose.

Thanks again!

Both Century Schoolbook and Noto Serif look so big at 14 points when exported
to
pdf. I think I simply don't understand font sizes. When compared with some of
the
size urls (e.g. https://www-archive.mozilla.org/newlayout/testcases/css/
sec526pt2.htm[1]) the base 12 in lyx to me looks like at least 14 point. When
I get to
office tomorrow I will print and see if I can figure it out better with a ruler
(no
printer at home). Aside from appearance, the issue is legally significant as
briefs
are subject to strict page limits and 14 point fills up a page quickly.

14 point type

2019-07-03 Thread John White
I am doing a brief for court. The rules provide: "A proportionally spaced
typeface
(e.g., Century Schoolbook, CG Times, Times New Roman, and New Century) must be
14-point or larger." I use new century Schoolbook.

As the base text is 12 point, the only way I see to do this is to highlight the
text and
mark it in lyx text-style as "large," which throws off symmetry of the
document (e.g.
subsections are also "large.")

This is a real pain. Any suggestions as to how I can otherwise get text in the
document to 14 point?

One thing: I am relying on

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/40104/difference-between-latex-and-word-in-setting-font-size#40108[1]

and common sense for my conclusion that when I check base size 12 in document
settings 12 point text is produced. However, on the printed page base size text
actually looks to be closer to 14 point. Perhaps if I actually measure the
type when
printed base size 12 will really be closer to 14 point?

I am using lyx version 2.3.2 on Debian stretch.

Thanks for any suggestions?

If I recall, I went to synaptic and simply updated lyx to the new version.

My bad. I have the module "Soul text markup". I did not know that was related
to
soul.module. Apologies all around.
