Re: Conflict with Hyperref + Floats?

2008-08-15 Thread Ryan Cross
Hi,

I just wanted to report that it worked. There were a few bits in the
documentation that were a bit confusing, but otherwise worked well.
I will have to confirm whether things work differently/better on 1.6 soon.

Thanks.

Conflict with Hyperref + Floats?

2008-08-08 Thread Ryan Cross
HI,
I posted a message yesterday about a problem I was having with algorithm
floats. I did a lot of debugging and finally (after very long line by line
debugging) found that the problem seems to be some sort of conflict when
using the hyperref package. Can anyone else confirm this? Does anyone know
of a work around? Any other advice/help is very welcome!

Thanks,
Ryan Cross

Problem with Algorithm Floats: Undefined Control Sequence

2008-08-07 Thread Ryan Cross
Hello,
I'm having a weird problem with Algorithm Floats. I am using a master
document with several child documents (one for each chapter). The odd thing
is that when I compile/pdf the child document by itself, the algorithm
floats seem to work just fine. However, when I try to compile/pdf the master
document, I get an error: Undefined Control Sequence. In the details, it
basically tells me that the algorithm command isn't defined correctly.

I am using the 'report' class. Also using OSX 10.5 (leopard).

On a related note, when using a program listing (without any algorithms)
that seems to be fine. I am also trying ot understand the difference between
the program listing, the algorithm float, and the lyx-code format, since
they all seem to be similar to what I want.

Please help! =)

 Hello all,

I have to warn you all I've only made simple use of latex, and have been
using LyX for most of my writing.

When using an external format before I've simply exported the lyx file
to latex, applied the new style for the conference, and edited by hand
where needed, which has been a headache.

Now the format for my thesis (in the form of a .sty file) makes my other
formats simplistic, and I'm having lots of trouble. I'll try to reduce
  this to the central details.

First I took the article.layout file, copied it into a new name, and
added \usepackage{csthesis.sty} in the preamble section as such:

  Preamble
 \usepackage{csthesis}
  EndPreamble

I also added and texhashed the sty file so that lyx could find it.

I confirm that article(csthesis) is listed as a document class in Lyx.

The layout file simply controls how the document appears in Lyx, and
does not have any effect on the output, correct?

So I generated a few DVIs and noticed that the example thesis, that came
with the package, bears little resemblance to my own output.

In order to test I imported the latex example file, included with the
package, into lyx and tried to generate output.

First problem was that I got the following error:

LaTeX Error: There's no line here to end.

Lyx highlights the first \qualification{} command.

All the google references I found talked about this error in terms of
using \\, which is not in the document.

Aside: I did notice that just before the qualification a \maketitle
command in the view-source window. What I don't understand is that
command is not visible as ERT or in any way in the normal lyx view.

So I did the logical thing of commenting out (with a preceding % sign)
in front of both the \qualification{} commands. Once that is done Lyx
will generate output, the style of the title is incorrect.

So I exported a second latex file from this document, and commented out
  the \maketitle command.

Once that is done I can generate a proper looking document using latex
  directly on that tex document.

I'm happy that I've been able to get something to work at all, but how
can I use the proper style in LyX directly without having to manually
edit the tex file after exporting?

Why does the \maketitle command get added when I import the tex?

Why does output bail on the \qualification{} commands?

Why does the output of the document using the layout that uses the
thesis style file not generate output that resembles the sample file?

I've attached a few files to make things more clear:

csthesis.sty is the University provided style file.

sfuthesis.sty is a copy of article.layout with the csthesis package used.

bbtest.tex is a shorted version of the sample text file that came with
the university style file, without any hand-changes. Note it does not
include a \makeletter command, but generates a nice title according to
the university specs when using latex by hand.

I may be the first person to use LyX with this style at my University,
and considering how happy I am with LyX in general, I hope solving these
issues will encourage students in the future to use LyX.

  Thanks for your time,
  any pointers or suggestions appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, in many ways that is the *type* of information I'm looking for
but as I have stated before, the documents are very specific that this
only works for version 1.2 of LyX and do NOT work for anything newer.
You can see this explicitly in this part of that doc
http://www.karakas-online.de/mySGML/lyx.html I really do not want to
use such an old version of LyX.

The other thing I would *hope* is possible is to actually edit an
existing docbook file. The reason for this is that I am attempting to
use this process as a way of creating documentation for an open source
project, and I'd like to be able to keep the source document as a
docbook file and not as a lyx file - which I think would be required
for the process outlined in those docs.

I have seen this document before and I believe I linked to it before
in a previous email, but I do really appreciate the assistance in
pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: 1.5.3 bug? - using child documents with same class causing error

2008-01-11 Thread Ryan Cross
Hey Bo,
I renamed the local file and did a reconfigure and that seems to have worked
- it also seems to have corrected the 0s issue. I'm working on both
windows and mac (currently my mac), so I can't test the dev version till
next week but will let you know. I should also note that I've been using
these files with 1.5.2, 1.5.1, etc so I was surprised to see the issue but
thanks for helping out. I would've never figured that out. Really glad to
hear about the bundles support coming, I'm currently storing my figures in a
subfolder so that at least all the paths are relative to the document which
helps alot.

I'm also curious - i have also heard that there is going to be a new file
format that is XML-based. Is this going to be implemented for 1.6? Does this
have ramifications for lyx being for other purposes besides just LaTeX? for
example see my thread on docbook support.

Thanks,
Ryan

Yes, I do - I've got all my files in a working copy of an svn repo, so I

 new
feature or something so that I don't need to install new layout
 classes in
  the system area?

It is a new feature, and you have encountered a bug that I think I
have fixed. (I would appreciate it if you can see if the problem
 persists with
the latest development version such as
 http://www.lyx.org/~bpeng/LyX-1.5.4svn-2008-01-04-Installer.exe ).

Begin with lyx 1.5.0, local, meaning in the same directory with the
document, style file (.sty, .cls) and layout (.layout) file can be
used directly by a document. You can not create such a document in lyx
(unless you modify a .lyx file directly) because local .layout does
not show up in the style list, but if you send your document, along
with your layout and .cls file to your co-authors, they do not have to
install anything to open and modify your file. This feature is not
well-publicized because it is a precursor to a 'bundle' feature (due
1.6.0) with which you can bundle figures, layouts, bibtex etc to a
 single .lyx file.

Your problem is caused by the repeated loading of the same local
layout file by your child documents, which is a bug that I should have
 fixed.

You can use the latest svn if it fixes your problem, or remove local
layout file. Removing system layout file may not work.

And, just for good measure, any comment on why the 0s are appearing?
 is
this related to the same issue?

I am not sure about this one. If the problem persists after the layout
problem is fixed, you can send a shrinked version of your document to
 me, or the lyx-users list.

Thanks,
Ryan

Your problem is caused by the repeated loading of the same local
layout file by your child documents, which is a bug that I should have
 fixed.

Is there a preference for which to remove? Also, will I need to do a

I have tried running a reconfigure, I still get the same error.

Included file `D:\general_svn\UNSWResearch\Thesis\introduction.lyx'
has textclass `unswthesis'
while parent file has textclass `unswthesis'

I am not sure why there is a problem here, this is the second time that I
have installed 1.5.3 and I would like to use it because of the outline bug
that was corrected, but if I can't compile documents with it, it doesnt'
make much use.

noticing another issue - possibly related - which is with the supposedly

are properly numbered, they are all 0s and in the appendicies, just ?s

Re: DocBook Support?

2008-01-09 Thread Ryan Cross
I looked into dblatex a bit - but I don't think this would quite work for me
since it doesn't provide the ability to author docbook files with Lyx. It is
only geared towards taking docbook files and then converting them to latex
for processing into pdfs, etc.

Still looking forward to the docbook documentation.

1.5.3 bug? - using child documents with same class causing error

2008-01-09 Thread Ryan Cross
HI,

I decided to upgrade to 1.5.3 today (windows) and tried working with a file
that has several child documents included. When trying to view the pdf (and
thus opening all the child docs), I am getting an error that the child docs
have a different text class than the parent file. However, the classes are
the same - I even did a diff on the files and the text class lines are
identical. I rolled back to 1.5.2 and didn't have any issues there.

Can anyone shed some light? I've had a few little issues previously where
lyx was robust to a problem in a file, and upon upgrading it was more strict
and thus caught what should've been caught before - but this seems like a
different issue unless Im not supposed to be declaring a text class in the
child documents or something of that nature.

Thanks,
Ryan

Feature Request - new file command from insert file dialog box.

2008-01-09 Thread Ryan Cross
Not sure if this would be the best place to post this, but it dawned on me
today that it would be really useful if I could have an option in the insert
file dialog box to create a new file, instead of just browsing for an
existing one. Ideally, this option would create a new lyx file will all the
appropriate document settings from the parent file. Maybe there is already a
way to do this, in which case hopefully someone can just point it out to me
and the developers could just add a link there.

Thanks,
Ryan

It would make sense to also use the most recent version on other machines
too. There are significant improvements and bug fixes to justify the upgrade
plus you'll get better support ;) i am not sure how to deal with 1.3.7 for

Re: Some Inconvenient Truths...

2007-12-22 Thread Ryan Cross
Hey Roger,

I completely sypathize with you and using equations in my documents is one
of the main reason I use latex. Just a thought though to perhaps ease the
pain of transition. How about taking your ms word file, converting it into
an open office file and then from there using the conversion from open
office (ODF) to lyx/latex. I think there is also a fairly reliable converter
between lyx/odt to go back and forth if you need to, but check the wiki for
more details.

Also, you should consider trying some of the keyboard short cuts to input
equations in lyx - most of the latex ones work - since it really helps speed
up the equation writing process. I find that since I'm able to use the
keyboard to enter about 85% of the equation, and the other 15% I use the
math toolbar for some of the more uncommon math characters (or the ones i
don't know the keyboard shortcut for), that I can practically write all of
my equations and in about 1/3 of the time it would take me to write it in
equation editor. Plus, all my equations look so much better when printed. My
only point here, is that if you need to edit your equations anyways it might
be relatively easy to just rewrite any equations you need in lyx and then
you'll end up with a fully working lyx document - plus its something you can
put under revision control (like subversion).

Good luck,
Ryan

I.T. #3: The theory for this computer program lies in a 48 page MS Word

I.T. #8: Earlier this week, I discovered a fantastic program called

I.T. #9: I don't have time right now to convert the 48 page MS Word

I was able to convert the 48 page MS Word document to LaTex, and the results
 in LyX look very encouraging!

I.T. #10: I found an inconvenient workaround to convert the 48 page MS

requires a considerable amount of prayer and alcoholic spirits. :o( But it
 can be done.

I.T. #11: Before doing anything, I make a backup copy of the file. More on
 that later.

I.T. #12: The file must then be converted in little pieces. It seems that
MS Word 2004 can't handle more than about 200 expressions at a time.

I.T. #13: I use the mouse to select that portion of the document I want to
convert. But not too much, or I'll violate the 200 expression rule and MS
Word will crash and I'll have to start all over again. Then I instruct
MathType to convert the selected segment of the document and wait several
minutes while meaningless garbage floats across the screen. This is a good
time to have another beer and go play around with LyX. And for some, prayer
might help, but not for me since I'm an Atheist.

I.T. #14: If I'm lucky and MS Word hasn't crashed and the funny stuff has

 happened more than once. :o(

I.T. #15: And it keeps getting better. (Time for another beer or maybe

My

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the understanding you are referring to is
already available - it is the relyx command that is used when
opening/importing a latex file. So, what this is a request for is a relyx in

I did see that ReLyx was replaced by tex2lyx (which is hopefully better). I
think this feature could be solved by actually doing a preview/edit of the
actual Lyx file format and not the LaTeX. Most of the edits I want to do
could probably be done by editing the Lyx file format. This would eliminate
the issue of converting in place, the only thing that would be
useful/necessary would be to have some sort of tag closer, which is
relatively easy.

DocBook Support?

2007-11-22 Thread Ryan Cross
Hi,

I have seen some pointers to using Lyx for creating/editing DocBook
documents. However, the wiki suggests this isn't supported any more. Does
anyone know how to do this? I'd like to use it with the current version.

You can also use the lyx binary without it being installed - you just won't
be able have preview of equations and such. Look up some of the details of
using portable lyx.

 Charles,

I looked at my (basic) lyx file in a text editor and it seems a simple
structure of (custom?) latex type commands (e.g. \layout).

Reading the extended manual, I guess that you suggest I should export
my lyx file into latex, edit the latex file and then import into lyx
when I am able to use lyx?

 Thanks in advance.

Its not an officially portable release - its just the lyx binary running on
a thumbdrive (or over a network drive probably too). A few comments suggest
you could make it fully portable if you included all the dependencies (like
a portable tex install). But for basic tasks, you should be fine.

I don't know much about linuxdoc - but I am pretty sure I am correctly
referring to docbook. Its an xml format for generating multiple types of
documentation, pdf/html/chm (windows help files)/etc

You can see lyx linked directly from the docbook wiki
http://wiki.docbook.org/topic/DocBookAuthoringTools

Can you shed light on either docbook or linuxdoc? (I'm mostly interested in
docbook though)
