  I'm on Windows 7. Until earlier this year I used Adobe Reader, but over
 the years it has got more and more ponderous and LyX interacts with it
 somewhat clunkily. I've since installed Sumatra. It's much smaller and more
 responsive and I'm pleased with how it interacts with LyX. But for things
 like printing a pdf Adobe Reader has additional options (e.g. printing in
 reverse order) so I keep it on disk.

 If you want Adobe Pro to be your default Windows pdf viewer and yet have
 Sumatra (or Evince or whatever) as your LyX pdf viewer, you need to go to
 Tools  Preferences  File Handling  File Formats and under the format PDF
 (pdflatex) go down to the Viewer: slot (where it may show pdfview) and
 choose Custom and in the right-hand slot enter e.g. SumatraPDF, then click
 Apply. Now in the larger window on the left select Paths. Second slot from
 the bottom on the right is PATH prefix. At the end of whatever is already
 there add (e.g.)

 (note the semicolon) or whatever the path is to the directory holding the

bloatware, but also because they have become badware and arrogantware.

Here's the long story:

I had several PDF files which could not be opened inside Adobe Reader
(saying that the PDF files are corrupted -- which is totally incorrect).  I
wrote to Adobe forum asking what to do.  Guess what.  Someone (probably
working for Adobe) replied (and argued) to me that Adobe Reader is
compliant to ISO something, blah blah blah.  So proud, so arrogant!

But you know what.  When I tried to open the same files inside Google
drive's integrated PDF viewer, Microsoft's One Drive integrated viewer,
Win8 native PDF viewer, and A LOT A LOT other PDF readers, NONE of them has
this corrupted file problem.

I've got enough of Adobe's attitude.  So I left it.  I'm also using
SumatraPDF which is working fine for me.

I saw that LyX 2.1.2 was released. I have tried the bundle setup in a
64-bit O/S but unfortunately, it still crashes just like before (cf my mail
below).

 with the option Reinstall using recommended settings (which is *only*

 Then at this point, if I used LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe instead, it's
 fine.  So, it might be nice to warn 64 bit O/S users to download the
 LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe on the download page and give them a little bit
 help on installing MiKTeX.

Oh, for information, my answer was a reply to a previous mail.  If you have
anything against MiKTeX, you should have answered to that mail, not mine.

And oh, for information, my answer is very useful to *LyX* users because it
tells them that installing *LyX* in XP Pro 64-bit could potentially fail if
they are using the bundle.  But probably you're more concentrated on
kicking off apparent non-LyX discussion than thinking further its
implication.

No, that's 100% impossible.  Why?  Because as I said (well, I think I have
said) I'm using the SAME 32-bit setup everywhere.  When I say the *same*, I
mean I have one single setup file in my hard drive and I copy from it again
and again to do tests.  And what results did I get?  In 64-bit O/S, the
setup would crash.  But in 32-bit O/S, it would work.  So the setup cannot
be corrupted (or it would have failed in 32-bit O/S) and I have no Internet
connection problem.


Can you therefore please try this:
 1. uninstall LyX _completely_
 2. uninstall MiKTeX _completely_
 3. check the registry that there are no traces of MiKTeX (and maybe LyX)
 and delte the traces
 4. download the 32bit version of MikTeX from here:
 http://download.heise.de/software/db66db9c69d45180fb6dd453a9dcfa
 7d/531b50c9/111255/basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe


I didn't follow these steps of your because I'm pretty convinced they are
not useful in my case.  I have just done two hashings on the
basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe.  If you can, you could check with me:

SHA-1: 8A0797F1 19D796FF 80ADFAB9 9945E76E 6883609F



 and install MiKTeX while you are logged in on Windows with Admin privileges


If you're suggesting it's an admin privilege problem, I'm 100% it's not.
Nothing to do with it.  I could have disable UAC which wouldn't change
anything at all.

 LyXWinInstaller/2.0.7/LyX-207-Installer-2.exe

 Does this work? if not what error do you get?


If I use LyX *installer*, of course it would work *provided* that MiKTeX
could be installed.  So step 5 is not quite relevant.



 I see that www.miktex.org is completely dead and that might be the reason
 why the installation of MiKTeX fails.
 (Note that the 64bit version of MiKteX is supported by LyX but you will
 have restriction for citations (BibTeX) and thee is no large speed
 improvement between the 32bit and 64bit version.)


I knew that.  But between trying 32-bit setup and fail and trying 64-bit
setup with a little chance of success, do we (64-bit O/S users) have any
choice?

If I use LyX *installer*, of course it would work *provided* that MiKTeX

Oh, for information, my answer was a reply to a previous mail.  If you have
anything against MiKTeX, you should have answered to that mail, not mine.

And oh, for information, my answer is very useful to *LyX* users because it
tells them that installing *LyX* in XP Pro 64-bit could potentially fail if
they are using the bundle.  But probably you're more concentrated on
kicking off apparent non-LyX discussion than thinking further its
implication.

No, that's 100% impossible.  Why?  Because as I said (well, I think I have
said) I'm using the SAME 32-bit setup everywhere.  When I say the *same*, I
mean I have one single setup file in my hard drive and I copy from it again
and again to do tests.  And what results did I get?  In 64-bit O/S, the

not useful in my case.  I have just done two hashings on the
basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe.  If you can, you could check with me:

No idea what you meant by windows actualizations, but indeed I have had
some problems as well with some setups.  I once had problem installing
VMware Workstation in an updated version in my Windows XP.  But the problem
was resolved in the next updated version.  But the key word here is *in the
past*!!

enough time to fix problem in their setup during all this time?  Saying

In another instance, ie in another Win7 64bit, I tried to define its
compatibility to Vista and it worked.  That means the setup has not been
modified since prehistory (I mean 2006, more than 8 years ago)??

Hi,

I came across error while trying to install LyX 2.0.7 in Windows 7 64-bit
(actually I have tried in many computers with the same error).  I'm using
the setup called LyX-2.0.7-Bundle-1.exe downloaded from LyX official
website.  As to Windows, to be exact, I have tried Windows 7 Professional 
Enterprise SP1 64-bit but I don't think the *editions* and *SP1* parts are
relevant.  I think the problem would still happen in other 64-bit Windows
O/S, eg XP, Vista, etc.

The error I got are shown in the attached image: the upper dialog appeared
first.  But almost immediately, it's grayed out and the lower dialog
appeared and LyX installation simply was aborted and failed.  LyX setup
then tried to roll back but it got stuck on Remove folder: C:\Program
Files (x86)\LyX 2.0\ and I had to press the Cancel button.

I went a bit further and described here below:

I took basic-miktex-2.9.5105.exe and run it in another Windows 7 64-bit and
it still crashed! I then downloaded basic-miktex-2.9.5105-x64.exe from
MiKTeX official website and tried it but that crashed as well!  Seems like
MiKTeX setup has very serious problem installing in 64bit O/S!

fine.  So, it might be nice to warn 64 bit O/S users to download the
LyX-2.0.7-Installer-1.exe on the download page and give them a little bit
help on installing MiKTeX.
