Cross-reference previews in LyX workspace

2024-06-13 Thread fcanatay
Is there a way to have small preview snippets pop up when hovering over a
cross-reference in LyX workspace? LyX has this for citations but not for other
types of references, as far as I can see.

I mean something along the lines of the now-unmaintained fancy-preview package
http://user.mendelu.cz/marik/fancy-preview/#presentations
Several pdf viewers also have this capability, such as Skim and Texshop viewer.

Cheers,

If you want to understand what this preference is for,
follow these steps:

* Open a new document
* Open the command buffer (View->Toolbars->Command Buffer->On)
* Start a new language with an RTL script by typing e.g. language hebrew
   in the command buffer
* Open an equation inset, and type several characters in it and outside of it.
* Start moving the caret with the left and right arrow keys

You will notice how inside the equation the caret navigate to the opposite
direction from which you are ordering it to, unlike in normal text.
Note that it happens not only in equations, but in other places which
are considered intrinsically LTR, like ERT.

After switching the Right-to-left cursor movement preference

direction you are ordering it.

That makes sense to me. But I'm not sure we can do it in 2.4.x.
Typically, when we make this kind of change, we add something to
prefs2prefs_prefs.py so that things do not change for existing users.
I.e., if someone did want to use 'logical', that would not be written to
the preferences file, since it's the default. Changing the default would
then surprise them. So the prefs2prefs code would add

\visual_cursor false

If changing those colors is not possible: as a workaround, I notice that
changing the interface to "Fusion" helps a lot. There at least the color

  * Can I change this background color to something different, so the
difference with the other tabs is clearer? I tried to change some colors in the
preference dialog->Look and feel->colors, but didn't find the correct color
setting.

  * It gets more confusing when the mouse pointer is (by accident or
willingly) over the active tab: then the color seems to be almost the same as
the inactive ones. Below, User Guide is still the active document.

> Is this possible?

It’s not clear what you are asking. There should be no problem installing both
versions on your machine. But it is usually the case that you can’t smoothly
edit the same document with different versions of LyX, as there are usually
changes in the .lyx file format from version to version. (There’s usually no
problem importing documents created from older versions of LyX into newer
versions but vice versa is usually (always?) problematic.)

If all you want to do is install both versions of LyX, then, assuming you
currently have LyX 2.3.8 installed, just open the Applications folder on your
machine and rename LyX.app to “LyX 2.3.8.app” and then install LyX 2.4. I think
the only issue is that LyX 2.3.8 will look in ~/Library/Application
Support/LyX-2.3 for its support files (personal bind files, personal spellcheck
files, etc) and LyX 2.4 will look in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.4 so
those could get out of sync. (You could probably create symlinks in your
LyX-2.3 folder to keep things in sync but you can kick that can down the road
for now.)

LyX wizards might be appalled at something I’ve said here...

In my opinion Richard is right. You can compile it on your own an it will
probably work.

As 2.4 is part of testing, you might also download the deb-package and try to
install it (dpkg -i lyx-2.4.0*.deb). You'll get the information, what
dependendcies are unsatisfied.
You can add testing to the source.list and try with preferences and pinning to
install just those debs, that are needed for 2.4.
My experience shows, however, that sooner or later this will lead to new
problems. Therefore, I think compiling on your own is the better solution.

One possibility would be to find your user directory (it is indicated in the

\draw_strategy backingstore and then restart LyX. Does it work?

After figuring out the right words to google, I also realized that you can just
drag-and-drop the directories (from the right-side of the save-as pane to the
left side) to add them. I had tried right-clicking on the icons on the right,
and also right-clicking on blank space on the left, but it slipped my mind to
try drag-and-drop.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour, or is it just my system? Does

Many thanks for any input!

Hmm, I have never seen this one!

One possibility would be to find your user directory (it is indicated in
the About LyX dialog) and add in the "preferences" file that is there
the line

\draw_strategy backingstore
and then restart LyX. Does it work?

I think this is the desired behavior of that dialog. It's explained in the
Embedded Objects manual (look under "Help"). The "maintain aspect ratio"
option is only available when you set both dimensions, and then the
dimension settings are interpreted as the maximum dimensions not to exceed.
If you set only one, the other is set automatically, and the aspect ratio
setting is on automatically. The one thing that I think is not working
correctly is that the aspect ratio option is grayed out but does not appear
to be checked, even though it's on.

When I try your settings (set only one dimension to 50% of the page width,
leave the other unset) I get the correct behavior. Can you create a minimal
working example of an image that comes out distorted when you set only one
dimension?

Hi Robert,

I’ve just tried that with LyX 2.4.0 and it works on my system. I’m on macOS
10.14.6 (Mojave). I’m using a fresh copy of LyX 2.4.0 to the /Applications
folder.

Did you put your version of LyX into the default /Applications folder too? If
not you have to fiddle with the settings for the path to LyX in Skim and you
can’t get it work for more then one LyX install simultaneously.

Best regards,
Stephan

Auwch... At first, I couldn't make a minimal working example...until I
discovered that I was always copying a figure (and then changing the filename),
with extra LyX-LaTex-settings in the third tab, combined with the following in
my preamble:
\usepackage[export]{adjustbox}
Just to be able to use valign for my figures.
Probably this is the cause of all my problems with aspect ratio's and figures!!!
Sorry, only by inspecting the source window in LyX, together with trying to
create a MWE, I (probably) discovered the actual cause of my problem(s).
Thanks, your suggestion of making a MWE showed me the way. Orry for your time,
thanks for your help.

A small problem I every now and then notice with figures: the setting to keep

consistently. When I copy-paste figures, I know that I risk that this will
happen. But I think it also happens in other situations. Again, hard to

A bit annoying, since this makes me check the entire document to detect whether

can't log in to bug trac to create new report

2024-06-05 Thread Tariq Rashid
Over the years I've created a small number of bug reports
https://www.lyx.org/trac/query?reporter=project_2501

However today I wanted to log into bug trac and create a new one but was
unable to.
Have accounts been disabled?

Anyway - I wanted to report that current lyx 2.3.8 on macos does not pick
up new language definition files for the TeX listings package. Several
online comments elsewhere suggest the list of languages in the lyx UI are
hardcoded. Overriding with "no language" and using "language={lean}" in the
advanced options with override checking does seem to work with some other
preamble hacks.

So my request rather than a bug is for Lyx to create its list from the
definition files when "Reconfigured".

---

for full detail here is what I did:

install lean listings style from

https://github.com/leanprover/lean4/blob/master/doc/latex/lstlean.tex

rename it to .sty and put it in

/usr/local/texlive/2024/texmf-dist/tex/latex/listings

update listings.cfg with
{lstlang0.sty,lstlang1.sty,lstlang2.sty,lstlang3.sty,lstlean.sty}

then run texhash as root

I also had to force enable amssymb because lean code uses unicode symbols
like ℝ regularly in its code

then as preamble

\usepackage{color}
\definecolor{keywordcolor}{rgb}{0.7, 0.1, 0.1} % red
\definecolor{tacticcolor}{rgb}{0.0, 0.1, 0.6}% blue
\definecolor{commentcolor}{rgb}{0.4, 0.4, 0.4} % grey
\definecolor{symbolcolor}{rgb}{0.0, 0.1, 0.6}% blue
\definecolor{sortcolor}{rgb}{0.1, 0.5, 0.1} % green

Aw: Headline is massively intended

2024-06-05 Thread Andreas Plihal via lyx-users
Dear Herbert,

I am convinced that you only want to help me. Thank you so much for that!

But it might be advisable for you to also read my answers to your recommendations. I (often) don't understand your recommendations and am therefore very confused: When you say page break, do you mean the common page break or the "pagebreak" statement?

Therefore, I will try to bring order to your recommendations:

There is no pagebreak command in either the lyx or tex file. If there is anything similar, it is the tcbbreak directives. Are you talking about those? So you don't mean the "pagebreak" command, but everything that creates a page break. However, this tcbbreak statement does not appear in a floating object, but in a color box. And then I have two columnbreak statements. Could you mean these? But these don't appear in floating objects either, but in multi-column texts.

And when you say floating objects, which ones do you mean? I have a total of 12 floating objects in the file.

I suspect that you may be referring to older versions of my files, so I am sending you all the files again in their current version.

Regardless of my confusion, I now have to insert a pagebreak command immediately before the last float that precedes the error situation although it seemed very strange to me. And indeed, this makes the error go away! I also did this in my original document and the error goes away there too.

Thank you!

However, I now get a page break in a place where I don't want it (as I mentioned in my last reply to you). Now one problem has been replaced by another.

Andreas

I tould you two times that the problem is the page break inside
the wrapfigure environment ("Umflossenes Gleitobjekt:Abbildung").
Inserting a page break before that part solves the problem.

Aspect ratio sometimes set to "off"

2024-06-05 Thread Stef Pillaert
A small problem I every now and then notice with figures: the setting to keep
the aspect ratio sometimes "disappears". Hard to reproduce this behavior
consistently. When I copy-paste figures, I know that I risk that this will
happen. But I think it also happens in other situations. Again, hard to
reproduce consistently, it happens "now and then".
A bit annoying, since this makes me check the entire document to detect whether
this has happened or not.
I hoped this behavior would have disappeared in LyX 2.4, but this doesn't seem
to be the case.

I don't really know how to create a suitable layout for the sn-jnl class.
Generally, I use the template article or ams article to write articles, but
in this case, they are asking me to use the class sn-jnl. I have also tried
importing the sn-article.tex example file into a Lyx file, but it seems
that Lyx cannot import it (I am attaching a screenshot).

Hi,

yesterday I updated Lyx to version 2.4. The error is still there.

By the way: there is a readme in the installation files. And it specifically recommends MikTex for Windows! So the error can't be in MikTex, can it?

I would have liked to show you this Readme file, but www.lyx.org is unfortunately not accessible at the moment.

So I would like to ask again: does anyone have any idea where the error could be?

It seems to me LyX should not favor one distribution over another if there is
only cursory and occasional information about using them with LyX. I do not
wish to complain in a similar fashion about TeXLive, but one may easily find
problems with TeXLive on Windows; see e.g.
https://tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2024-May/thread.html. Twice in one month! So
perhaps it is best to maintain a neutral view on LyX's website.

I've done the same thing multiple times before. This happens to me when
downloading .cls files for me. Sometimes my automatic wget download
"succeeds" but it ends up being an html message that tells me the file
doesn't exist.

The German page did say to use MiKTeX. (So did the Spanish one.) I
changed it now.

We need either (a) to figure out how to keep the translated pages in
sync with the English or (b) ditch the translations, on the theory that
Google can handle it well enough.

First, thanks a lot for this new version of LyX. It must have been an enormous job!

In previous versions, I could use the file exam.layout without any problems. In LyX 2.4, I didn't seem to suffice to just place the file exam.layout in C:\Program Files\LyX2.4\resources\layouts\exam/layout. Even after "reconfigure" of LyX, it didn't seem to work.
I had to use this button (see screenshot) to point directly to the file "exam.layout". Is this wanted behaviour?

2024-06-02 Thread Andreas Plihal via lyx-users
Dear Herbert,

I suspect that our communication is not working very well. Are we talking past each other?

In your last message, you sent me my document back and showed me in a picture how you replaced my text columns with a floating object. I have already said it several times: I have already tried that myself and unfortunately it does not work within the list environment.

I have long since replaced the pagebreak statement with tcbbreak. As a result, there is no longer a pagebreak statement anywhere in my document. (But maybe you are still referring to older versions of my file...) tcbbreak works in the color box, however. This has solved my last error that you were involved in.

Why should I insert a page break before the environment now? I don't want that.

Do you recommend that as a general solution or just as a means of error analysis?

And why "manually"? How else could I insert a page break other than manually?

Andreas,

agin: your are using a wrapfigure environment, which has nothing to do with
a floating environment!  You have a pagebreak inside the wrapfigure
environment, which does not work. Move that part to another position
or insert  a pagebreak by hand _before_  that envoronment.

The LYX website states quite clearly that MikTex is recommended for Windows:

"To produce a print version of your documents, you must have LaTeX installed.

We recommend TeXLive (or the older distribution teTeX) for Unix-like systems such as Linux, MikTeX for Windows and MacTeX for Mac OS."

I have selected my font in the settings. I don't know how else to do it. A package called texlive-full does not exist on my MikTex console. I don't know how to install this package without using manual installation. Maybe with \usepackage? That doesn't work.

Ah, I didn’t realize you were on Windows; TeX Live is a completely different implementation of TeX. As a recent thread indicated, MikTeX is not recommended for use with LyX — maybe this is Yet Another MikTeX Issue? So maybe try removing it and installing TeX Live instead. That’s all I can think of, as your documents seem to compile just fine under both MacOS and Linux for me (on both of which I have versions of TeX Live).

Could you export your two LyX files to LaTeX and send them to me? There has to be some difference that is causing this, since I’m not having the same problem.

Package luatex.def Error: File `Parabel.pdf' not found: using draft setting.

It is a problem with the wrapfigure environment on the page before.
It appears in a pagebreak which is not a good idea. However, the
wrapfigure is repeated on the follwing text, see image.

Lyx 2.4.0 producing performing inconsistently on Mac OSX

2024-06-02 Thread Robert Betz

I have Mac OSX 14.5. I have the latest version of MacTex installed.

I have tried Lyx 2.4.0 RCx a couple of times but gave up because
somethings were not working correctly. I was hoping that the release
version would have some of the issues solved, but alas is did not. The
issues I have come across are:

(1) I have Lyx files that are fine under 2.3.7/8 and will not compile
under V2.4.0.  I get strange errors from the Tex compilation related to
font issues and the compilation aborts with an overflow of memory. This
does not occur on all files, but only on some.

(2) The reverse search from the Skim previewer does not work on V2.4.0
(at all as far as I can see).  The forward search from Lyx to Skim does
work.

(3) There is inconsistency on rendering the maths equations in the Lyx
interface -- sometimes they will not render at all and stay in the blue
editing mode colout, sometimes they will render to the black mode, but
the size is not the same as the size of the fonts set in the interface.
They are much smaller. On some files they render OK. Incidentally I am
using the Euclid font as the font in the interface.

(4) The positioning of display equations in the Lyx interface is to the
left. The equation label font is very big and pushes the equations to
the left.

V2.3.8 has none of the above issues, therefore the Mac environment
appears to be OK.

Thanks.

It's because of this sort of problem, which seems to arise constantly,

I compiled 2.4.0 on Kali LInux 2024.2 with Qt6 (in a Parallels VM), no issues.
Under MacOS I renamed RC4 just in case and then just copied 2.4.0 into the

I can’t begin to express my gratitude to the LyX developers for this fabulous

Cmd-i (“italic”) has always done the trick for me. ("Ctrl-c e” as well, FWIW!)

LyX 2.4 - Emph keyboard shortcut not working in OS X 14.4.1

2024-06-01 Thread Artemy Kolchinsky
Thank you for releasing this amazing piece of software!

However, I am running into an annoying bug in Lyx 2.4 on OS X 14.4.1 (I
cannot post to the bug tracker due to lack of privileges). The cmd+e
command no longer works to turn emphasis on/off. cmd+b (bold) and cmd+u
(underline) still work as expected.

This is with the LyX-2.4.0+qt5-x86_64-arm64-cocoa binary, freshly
downloaded.

Thanks

LyX 2.4.0 Released!

2024-05-31 Thread Richard Kimberly Heck

Public release of LyX version 2.4.0
===

We are proud to announce the release of the new LyX 2.4 series.

After long 6 years of development the 2.4 series has a rich set
of new features compared to the current stable series.
An overview of the new features can be found here:

  https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX24

As this release ships with new features, we strongly recommend that
packagers

of LyX on various platforms and distributions read RELEASE-NOTES in order to
get the new dependencies right.

You can download LyX 2.4.0 from https://www.lyx.org/Download

We hope you will enjoy the result!

If a file from an earlier version of LyX is opened *and saved* with
any version of 2.4.x, then the original file will automatically be
backed up. The backup file will be found in the backup directory, if one
is set under Tools> Preferences> Paths, or else in the same folder as
the original file, if no backup directory is set. The filename of the
backup file will be:
    ORIGNAME-lyxformat-NUM.lyx~
where NUM is the LyX format number of the original file. In the case of
2.3.x file, this will be 544, but in the case of older files it will be
different.

The file RELEASE-NOTES also lists some known issues and problems compared
to the current stable releases (LyX 2.3.x).

As with any major release, this one comes with a lot of new features but
also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.4.0, either
email the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org),
or open a bug report at https://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome .
Please specify if the behavior you are reporting is different from behavior
in a previous LyX version.

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the
documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you
will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX
users'

list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).

The LyX team.

Herbert,

I've done this with small documents. And I can block the chapter in
the PDF

file and paste it to a text file, but that's not really efficient.

Learning how to set up a parent file and each chapter as children
would be
best. Looking at the User Guide, Additional Features, and Embedded
Objects

docs I didn't see how to do this.

See attached. This could not be easier.
