can you give an example-file?

Go to some directory you suspect might have the spelling error. Then enter
command:
find . -name "*" | xargs grep Fogure

this should list all files that have the spelling error. Now just load the
erroneus file into your text editor, and search-and-replace all Fogures.

Note that the file with spelling error may be in your LaTeX distribution
files, often somewhere at /usr/local/tetex or something.

Are You sure You did not redefine \thefigure or \caption command ?

  Don't You use some brain-damaged package ?

Does it happen if You just create plain new file and insert floating
figure in
 it ?

Isn't Your latex instalation broken ?

I don't believe I've redefined either of the commands. As for the other
suggestions, I guess it could be any of these. But I wouldn't know where to
start looking to see if a package or latex itself was damaged. Can you
expand a little? All I know is that the root directory is /usr/share/teTex
but further down the tree I'm a little out of my depth.

thanks,

David.
