I meant: Create a document. Set it to your layout. Set it to your 
language. Save it in templates. Then open it via File > New from Template...

I am writing a document in a non-English language.

To take care of that, one can navigate to Document Settings->Language and 
choose the document language and language package in that menu (I know, those 
settings are saved in the header of lyx file).

Either way, my question is: Can a new layout file that I write (let's call it 
myNewLayout.layout) which is later to be chosen as the document class in LyX, 
can make an effect on these two settings? I guess that the answer is no, since 
I never found such a class parameter in section 5.3.5 of the customization 
manual, but I want to be sure about it.--

Yes, there is a polyglossia bug (using a package without requiring it) that
was exposed with the latest update to fontspec. It has nothing to do with
XeTeX (except that polyglossia is for use with XeTeX/LuaTeX).

format you will use. This will use the newer polyglossia package whenever this 
is suitable (XeTeX backend, non-TeX fonts, all laguages covered by

In the User specified Latex commands part of the source code I overwrote the 
settings of Lyx (to be precise someone made that for me, I can't do). I don't 
think this the Spirit of Lyx-way to solve the problem. On the other hand I 
don't really know to do so. 

Isn't there a nice way to solve this. And if not, how can I overwrite the 
settings of the remark-environment which I want to be Bemerkung and 
example which I want to be Beispiel.

content German (then you won't see the blue underline).

I would look at the TeX source (ViewSource) or at the *.lyx file in a
text editor.

In the User specified Latex commands part of the source code I overwrote the 
settings of Lyx (to be precise someone made that for me, I can't do). I don't 
think this the Spirit of Lyx-way to solve the problem. On the other hand I 
don't really know to do so. 

Isn't there a nice way to solve this. And if not, how can I overwrite the 
settings of the remark-environment which I want to be Bemerkung and 
example which I want to be Beispiel.

Dear all,
I was wondering, as I was transferring my BA paper to LyX from OOo:
I have set the document to use Danish as the default language, but when
I defined a chapter, it put up the headline chapter 1. Is it possible
to insert these strings in Danish, I wonder?
If I don't, I will have to use unnumbered chapters, and LyX seemed
reluctant to add those to the table of contents.

I have updated my LyX and know my spellchecker is not working? I searched 
and tried at least 10 things but still not working. Looking for en_US 
dictionary, I have Aspell in C. But not working I guess.

Ah, you are onto it. It outputs it correctly, just displays the word
chapter in LyX - transforms it when outputting.

Your child doc prints on the following page when used alone,
but german text is generated when the child doc is included
from the british master doc?

My guess then, is that the place in the master doc where
your child document is included is set to german. Then, the
entire child document will be set with german words for the
autogenerated parts. (Such as crossreferences.)

Check your master document carefully, or just select the part that
includes child documents.  Then use the menu edit-text style-customized,
and revert language changes from there, or set it explicitly to british.
See if this helps.

in fact, to precise my question, I have at present a lyx document in which
there are several different settings in the document for the language. Part
of the document is in french and then make the french dictionnary available,
an other part cannot be set up in french and is recognized as english.

The language setting option in the preferences dialog is very misleading.
It is likely that you should NOT set it to French, namely,
you should change it back to English.

Have you also updated the babel option (in the preferences)?
It works for me:
When I change the language in Layout - Document, all text I have 
becomes blue underlined because the text language won't be changed.
(This is possibly a bug.)
After changing the language manually with Layout - Character all works 
fine. The language setting in the preferences is only necessary for new 
documents. But the babel setting is always necessary.
(I'll write to bugzilla for this.)

I encouter some problems under lyx for windows to set the settings of some
documents. Although, I choose french both in the preferences of LyX and in
the document layout for the language settings, it doesn't seem to be taken
into account anyway?
Have you also updated the babel option (in the preferences)?
It works for me:
When I change the language in Layout - Document, all text I have 
becomes blue underlined because the text language won't be changed.
(This is possibly a bug.)
After changing the language manually with Layout - Character all works 
fine. The language setting in the preferences is only necessary for new 
documents. But the babel setting is always necessary.
(I'll write to bugzilla for this.)

Rehello,
in fact, to precise my question, I have at present a lyx document in which
there are several different settings in the document for the language. Part
of the document is in french and then make the french dictionnary available,
an other part cannot be set up in french and is recognized as english.
Curious...

The language setting option in the preferences dialog is very misleading.
It is likely that you should NOT set it to French, namely,
you should change it back to English.

I hope this is not a candidate for FAQ or RTFM. Anyway, here it comes: how 
can I change the language settings for my document? Everytime I switch from 
English to German, LyX (or LaTeX?) complains as soon as I enter the 
Postscript preview mode. I guess I'm missing some LaTeX lang. modules, but 
being a real bloody beginner in LaTeX, I need some advice on where to install 
them.

Thanks for any suggestions. BTW I'm using LyX 1.1.6fix1 on Linux and tetex 
1.0.7.

Hmmm... I myself use three different languages frequently with LyX, english, 
swedish and icelandic, and I never have problems with that.
Just to check this out I made one dokument in all three languages right now 
and it previews perfectly in both dvi and ps. I kept the language setting in 
english though.

difficult to persuade it, what to do. My solution is export to 
LaTeX and check that,

* \documentclass has only your primary language
* \usepackage{babel} has all languages used in the document
* there are no non-sensical \setlanguage (sometimes, I have 
found, that LyX covered all document in \setlanguage 
primary-language of document and in \documentclass was something 
non-sensical).

Clean it up and import into LyX. Unfortunately, I have no 
example at hand to fire the bug report (but maybe it is a 
feature :-), who knows?).

I think you are on to something here. When I just tried it again it suddenly 
worked - magically. The same thing wouldn't work all weekend and I kept 
reading manuals and all documentation I could find...

Well, not necessary anymore. But thank you, I started to doubt my sanity over 
that one :-) And no, unfortunately I can't reproduce this error. So no bug 
report possible either.

If have a document with a table of contents, and you change the language of
the document from English to German (and you latex'ed the file before the
language change), when you first run latex you will get an error because
the old table of contents (in the .toc file) is still in English.
However, if you run latex again, everything will be fine (as the first latex
run create a new table of contents).

I've already create a fix in LyX so it will automatically run LaTeX twice
after changing the document language.

I think you are on to something here. When I just tried it again it suddenly 
worked - magically. The same thing wouldn't work all weekend and I kept 
reading manuals and all documentation I could find...

Well, not necessary anymore. But thank you, I started to doubt my sanity over 
that one :-) And no, unfortunately I can't reproduce this error. So no bug 
report possible either.
