O.K. As well as the Mail Menopause project announced
recently we have the follow up to the Hands Across
The World postcard project of the 90's that was
exhibited at the
several leading civic art galleries in the u.k. All
participants got a return hand shaped (draw round
your hand- alot of people got this wrong) postcard
from me.

This project has a sister project called Let Your
Postcards Do The Walking and will be similarly
exhibited and blog made. Possible catalogue if funds
can be raised but no early promises.

All you have to do is draw round your bare foot (or
feet) onto a piece of thin card and cut round the
edge. Add images of feet etc, rubber stamps, collage,
stickers etc. and send to-

A.1.Waste Papier Company
Trebla, Shipbrook Road

  Hello all

In January 2006 I started the website mailart.org
 as a small side
project to show documentation for my mail art
 call. Since then I have
added a mail art calls area and a few other
 things.

I am looking to expand mailart.org in a few ways,
 the first being to
include the voices of other mail artists.

One way to do this is to have guest writers who
 have access to the
blog posting. There are many mail art blogs on the
 web, but I think
there are few that have multiple mail artists
 writing posts. Mail Art
message boards and lists like this one serve this
 purpose, but often
miss out on much of the new technology that comes
 along with blogs.

The blog structure allows for content to be
 distributed in a myriad
of new ways, like aggregating posts from a variety
 of pages into a
single unit like a MyYahoo page, or having new
posts show up on a PDA
  or cellphone.

It is very possible to have the posts from your
 own mailart blog
automatically appear on mailart.org, or maybe the
 answer is to give
some mailartists access to the posting interface
 itself.

I am still thinking about this stuff, but as an
 experiment I'd like
to try something like this soon. If you'd like to
 join in with me,
either as a writer or to give some ideas, that
 would be great.

Ray who?

Michael who?

--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Ray Johnson has been classified as a Pop Artist. A
 more adequate way to
describe him is to say that he was first within Pop
 Art, among Pop Artists, but
later he was next to Pop Artists. He made many
 collages which he designated
as “portraitsâ€? of other artists. His collage
 and his mail-art were
elaborations of each other, governed by the same
images and ideas. I have written a
statement only as a preliminary sketch of the theme
  of “friendshipâ€? in the
life and art of Ray Johnson. --Bill Wilson
 Ray Johnson: en rapport
Paul Cezanne, August 1906: …le tout est de
 mettre le plus de rapport
 possible…
Ray Johnson responded to the work of other artists
 as friendly
communications to him. He reciprocated with
collages which mention those artists with
whom he experienced rapport. He often mailed
 envelopes with notes addressed to
those artists, sometimes with apt images that
related to a work of art, or
to the artist, but always obliquely. He never
 pointed toward something deep
and perhaps secret, but always directed attention
 toward something available on
the surface. With his collages, his notes, and
 his lists of artists, Ray
constructed more inter-relations with more artists
 than anyone else working
 from 1955 to 1995.
Ray also began to send apt images in the mail to
 people other than artists.
By 1961, he began to ask a recipient to relay an
 image to someone else,
thereby starting a network which in 1962 became the
 New York Correspondance
School of Art. Ray encouraged thousands of people
 to participate in
disinterested aesthetic actions, rather than remain
outside art as observers. By 2006,
when postal mail has overlapped electronic mail,
 Ray’s network has become an
 international self-developing system of
 communication of aesthetic images and
  events.
By the summer of 1944, his seventeenth summer, Ray
 found himself safe in a
field of visual artists. By the summer of 1948,
 he was a twenty-year-old
student at Black Mountain College, near Asheville,
 North Carolina. As he wrote
in 1974, he …walked with Bill and Elaine one sad
 evening up 'the Road' when
they had just heard about Gorky's death. Bill
 and Elaine were Willem and
Elaine de Kooning, painters who befriended Ray. So
 he walked and talked
with American painters who were struggling with the
 achievements of Henri
Matisse and Pablo Picasso in the European
background, and of Arshile Gorky in the
 American foreground.
At Black Mountain College, Ray studied the
 relativity of colors with Josef
Albers. He became friends with Robert
 Rauschenberg, Sue Weil, Cy Twombly
and Stan Vanderbeek. He learned beside students
 like Ruth Asawa, Arthur Penn,
and Kenneth Snelson, a group who were mediating
 among European Modernisms and
American pragmatisms. Forty years later, he
 reproportioned his chronology
by adding that he had studied painting with Lyonel
 Feininger. When opening
himself toward Europe, he listened to music like
 Gregorian chants that he had
never heard in Detroit, but also 20th century music
 from France and Germany.
When opening himself toward Asia, he studied Asian
 religio-philosophies to
learn how to get ideas to disappear into actions,
 and how to fill abstract
 concepts with concrete sensory experiences.
Through books and magazines from Europe, Ray became
  familiar with the
paintings of Paul Klee, the poems of Antonio
Machado, and the collages of Kurt
Schwitters, John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch. He met
 Walter Gropius and
Buckminster Fuller. Thus he arose in the midst of
 Euro-American Modernisms in
painting, music, dance, poetry, films, architecture,
  and other arts, including the
weaving of Anni Albers. He followed the gaze of
 immigrant European artists
toward Native American Indian art, design and
 architecture, and participated
in the study and use of the languages of Mayan
 glyphs, images which spoke to
Josef Albers, Ben Shahn and Max Ernst.
By 1952 Ray lived on Monroe Street, in Manhattan,
 with artists who used the
hypotheses of art in ordinary events. He deepened
 his acquaintance with
his neighbors, John Cage and Merce Cunningham, two
 artists who adapted the
methods and values they used in the construction of
 their arts to their c
onstruction of daily life. John and Merce made
indeterminacy a way of life, but
always in tension with precise knowledge and
information, so that no one would
eat a poisonous mushroom, and no one would break a
 bone. Richard Lippold
brought Ray to concerts, parties and openings of
 shows in galleries, where he
met artists like Philip Guston, Kenzo Okada,
 Alphonse Ossorio, Hedda Sterne
and Marcel Duchamp. Thus Ray learned Modernism
 through direct acquaintance

Re: (,) changes in the mail art network

2005-10-09 Thread michael leigh
Funnily enough when I was fledgling mail artist in
1980 the old timers then told me the halycon days of
mail art were the 70's and I'd just missed it all!
But for me it was an exciting new world I had
discovered and the 8o and 90's were great for me and I
met lots of wonderful mail artist freinds back then-
indeed I met my partner and soul mate Hazel in the
mail so it completely changed my life!
But after 25 years one does get tired of the same old
add and pass and zeroxed sheet and tired looking
envelopes. The internet comes along and that looks
fresh and exciting (the grass is always greener?) so I
spend more time blogging now than I do licking stamps.
Times change and people change. Thats what life is all
about. Have fun while you can. Enjoy each day as it
comes. Thats what i do now.

I have to agree that the mail art network I
participate in now is very different from the one I
started with in the early 90's--but I'm also a very

perceive over time are at least partially so different
because the personal filter of experience is changed.
But the ebb and flow of the network certainly has
something to do with it all.

I remember some old timer mail artists telling me way
back then that the best time for mail art was over,
but for me that wasn't true at all! It was all new
and exciting and even the less exciting pieces were
interesting to me because it was the first time I had
seen them. Now, over 13 or 14 years later, I've seen
some things MANY times...some I sort of like, some
have me yawning. But, to me, the network is still an
exciting, inspiring group of generous people.

Each individual has her/his own individual experience,
right?

Thanks Geert,

More upsetting news reached me this weekend.
John Upton, an English mail artist who lived in
Scotland near Glasgow, died

I am so sad. John was a real teacher to me. It was the
first foreign mail
artist I met in person in 1994.
I visited him again in 1996, accompanied by Marilyn
Dammann.
Now both of them are dancing on the clouds.

I'll inform you all when the service for John will
happen, so we can
remember him at the same time. I intend also to write
a memory piece
because there are a lot of great stories to tell about
John Upton.
2005 is really a lousy year. I don't stop saying

The news killed a bit the joy I felt this week after

 Dear Kevin,
many thanks for your kind and thoughtful answers,
 my Dodo-text was indeed
purposedly over-pessimist as a sort of provocation
 (and a feedback in the
first place to some Dodo mailings I got from other
 mail-artists, so part
of a collective game). I was bewildered too by the
 total lack of answers
from the ma newsgroup, so your words (and b saved

it a bit less surrealistic to me. I experienced the
 same feeling in the
 past,
when I posted a text pointing to the fact that my
 AAA Editions is the only
small publishing house in the world to have
produced 3 books on the history
of mail art (2 of which in English/Italian) and
 only about 10 copies of
 each
were sold to mail artists despite a large
 circilation of info about it
 (luckily,
I sold enough in the normal Italian bookstores to
 almost cover the costs).
I am not bitter about it, I enjoyed doing it and
will do it again, I am
 just
bewildered by the surrealistic lack of interest in
 the history of the medium
from the part of those who take part in it. Yes,
 there probably never was
a true mail art community, just an oneiric utopia

Re: (,) Fwd: Carlo Pittore (May 14, 1943-July 17, 2005)

2005-07-19 Thread michael leigh
It was a shock for me too although I knew he was
battling cancer.
Carlo was an inspiration and a guiding light in the
early 80's when I first stumbled upon the mail art
network and he was incredibly helpful at sending
addresses when I was looking for like minds to contact
and also I took part in his many projects at his small
store front gallery in New York. He will be greatly
missed by all those whose lives and mail he touched.

All the best, Michael

 2005)

   Friends,

I am sorry to announce that Carlo Pittore passed
away yesterday, July 17, 2005 at 3:05 pm. I am told
he succumbed peacefully, attended by loving friends,
in his beloved state of Maine on Sunday afternoon to
the esophageal cancer that he was diagnosed with
last year. Carlo, always the fighter, far outlived
the time that doctors had predicted he would have on
the planet. He was determined to live life to its
fullest as long as he could, and this he certainly
 did.

He was such a passionate artist. I wrote this
 [http://www.panmodern.com/carlopittore.html] last
year when I heard about his illness. We then had a
tribute for him in October at the Bowery Poetry Club
in New York to which some of you sent messages. I
forwarded them to him. He enjoyed watching the video
and reading and hearing about the messages from his
many friends. I now welcome other tributes to Carlo
as well as suggestions about how we might remember
him with art. Send your suggestions and thoughts
and wishes. I will forward along any information
that I get as it comes in- back to you and also to
his friends and family in Maine and New York who
will determine what will happen next.

Celebrate Carlo with passion and joy and
enthusiasm. I am sure that is what he would have
 liked.

Well, Fast Eyes, I would say that Curios Things has
ended already but but still working my way backwards
to the beginning. I'm not sure when that will be!

RE: (,) CURIOS THINGS

2005-06-02 Thread michael leigh
Hi Vittore, Glad you are enjoying the Italian version
of Curios Things. I hope to add to it today sometime.
Rather caught up with adding Archie's animations to
the Internet Archive at the moment and turning them
into small Quicktime movies for Flickr and blogs etc.
Its nice to be able to share them with a wider
audience. This may get Archie back into doing some
more as he's neglected his animations for a while
spending time out in the fresh air and other time
wasting activities! ha ha!

New goons and cutler coming soon too. All the best,
Michael

Re: (,) Re: internet translations

2005-04-28 Thread michael leigh
Thanks Onkel Vittore- here is your message translated
for our dear german friends-

Lieber Michael und alii, haben wir für 30 + gehandhabt
- Jahre, über Sprachbarrieren, also selbstverständlich
Lassen Sie uns so
Liebe
4 alle, Onkel Vittore

It seems that Birdie gnam gnam is the same in
german!

Michael

 Dear Michael et alii,
we have managed for 30 + - years to communicate
 beyond language barriers,
so of course this is not a big problem now, but it
is nice to see how these
web translations can transform our messages into
 wild abstract poetry
(I did try once as a art project to have a famous
 sonnet by Shakespeare
or Dante translated into other languages and then
 back to the original:
the most hilarious things do happen - just wonder if
 they use this kind
of translations at political meetings, the earth may
 explode any day now...).
So let us just keep on business as usual, with poor
 Franco that will have
to translate this text because he cannot read
 English and no answer from
Matthew (for the next 24 years and a half) :-)

how do you translate birdie gnam gnam anyway?
 love 4 all,
 Uncle Vittore
