If such a message is sent to the listname-request address, it would be processed as an unsubscribe command. Given that it was sent to the list posting address, when administrivia is Yes, the message is held so an owner/moderator can review it and take appropriate action. > Is there anything I could do with the list configuration to correct the > behaviour? The behavior you observed is exactly as intended. If administrivia is Yes, Mailman attempts to recognize messages with commands sent to the list rather than -request and hold them for owner/moderator action. Since it is not possible in all cases to determine the intent of the sender, it is better to have a human review the message than to have something that was not intended to be a command be processed as a command. In case anyone is wondering what Marie-Yvette is asking, her message says that she's trying to make her mailing list archives more useful to her, and has noticed that approved messages are archived but rejected ones disappear. She's noticed that there is an option to save rejected messages to a file, but that option is not available unless activated by the administrator. So she's asking for that option to be activated. (Which obviously, we can't do, and I'm not sure who to tell her to contact.) Re: [Mailman-Users] unsubscribing addresses from domain in one fell swoop?
We host over 600 lists and have about 250,000 subscribers. List owners have been asking me about how particular subscribers were able to subscribe to their lists. Well, in some cases, the list had open subscription. However, in almost all cases, the subscribers were from zeusmail.org. I did a scan of the subscribe logs and found over 800 subscribed addresses using zeusmail.org domain. Interestingly, all subscriptions come from the same IP address. Looking at the addresses, it is obvious that they are bogus, though they are interesting and rather humorous names that when all are put together, show a pattern of automated subscriptions. I checked the post logs and found that none from that domain had posted. So, I have done a couple of things. 1) blocked the ip at the firewall, 2) created a Postfix filter to not allow that domain to be able to send through the mail server, 3) added a robots.txt file to specifically block that domain, and 4) unsubscribed all zeusmail.org subscribers using the script Mark provided. It seems that zeusmail.org is a legitimate and non-blacklisted domain, but it just reeks of spammers. If there is a problem with the few that may be legitimate, they can easily be reinstated. Re: [Mailman-Users] Unsubscribing Problem
Keith Casey wrote: I just 'inhereted' a mailing list and I'm just trying to figure out my way around.. yes.. a total n00b. I spent an hour or so looking for a solution to a problem that many people are expereincing on the list. When they want to unsubscribe on the wed interface, one inputs their e-mail address (it exists in the list) and when they press the 'Unsubscribe or Edit Options button, they are sent to the 'subscribe' page and it says this: Subscription results Your subscription request has been received, and will soon be acted upon. Depending on the configuration of this mailing list, your subscription request may have to be first confirmed by you via email, or approved by the list moderator. If confirmation is required, you will soon get a confirmation email which contains further instructions. Then an e-mail is generated stating that someone has tried subscribing you to a list that you're already on. It doesn't bring them to an edit or unsubscribe page when they press the button after they put in their e-mail address which shouldn't it be brining the user there? We're using version 2.1.5. Here's my guess. Someone has edited the template for the listinfo page, probably using the Edit the public HTML pages-General list information page link, but possibly via shell access. This edit attempted to rearrange the page and has resulted in the Unsubscribe or edit options form being logically nested within the Subscribe form. This is an easy mistake to make because the start tag for the Subscribe form comes too early in the template. Each form in the template begins with a tag of the form MM-Xxx-Form-Start and ends with the tag MM-Form-End. In the default template, the MM-Subscribe-Form-Start tag comes way too soon on the page, so attempts to rearrange things may move its MM-Form-End tag after another form without moving the start tag or move another form into the area between the MM-Subscribe-Form-Start tag and its MM-Form-End tag. The default English template (which should be unchanged is in templates/en/listinfo.html. The one for your list is probably in lists/list-name/en/listinfo.html. -- Mark Sapiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B. If you have access to the server, there is a command called remove_members. This command can remove an email address from all lists. If you do not have access to the server, then you may wish to have the server administrator make this command available via a sudo-CGI or make it accessible as an email command. Re: [Mailman-Users] unsubscribing without password?
Yeah, I understand this, but it's too much of a hassle for users to have to retrieve their password like this. Not everyone is as computer savvy as you might think... all of the people on my list are international students. Most don't speak english well, and many of them will never of even used a computer before they arrived in the US. Other listservs make it very simple to unsubscribe... with majordomo, you just send an email with unsubscribe listname to a certain address. Ezmlm is even easier than that... just send any email to the unsubscribe address. The chances are SLIM that you'll accidentally unsubscribe yourself. They're even slimmer that some evil fool will try to unsubscribe you. I love mailman... it's by far my favorite listserv, but this one issue is keeping me from using it. :( Justin In a message dated Sat, 3 Aug 2002 6:59:51 AM Eastern Standard Time, Support Desk [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The password requirement is for subscriber protection, both, against getting subscribed unwillingly, and getting dropped inadvertently. Mailman, by default, automatically sends the password every month, so users are constantly reminded of password. If you add everyone, say, on the 25th of a month, then, on the 1st day of subsequent months, they receive their reminder. Those who **really** don't want to be on the list will make the effort to follow the unsubscribe instructions. If you include the links to list info and unsubscribe instructions in the header or footer of every message, they should be able to leave and change by simple steps. I've recently installed mailman, and would like to use it so that our organization can send announcements to the subscriber list. All of the users are added by us... it will be rare that anyone subscribes themself. But users will be unsubscribing thereselves. So, when someone wants to unsubscribe, it makes it a hassle for them to go and find their password since they didn't create it in the first place. Is there any simple way for a user to unsubscribe without their password? Re: [Mailman-Users] unsubscribing without password?
I have an idea. I looked through the templates, and saw the password template variable. I tried using that in the resent mail footer, but it didn't parse. I was thinking I'd have a mailto:; with the subject set with the proper line to unsubscribe, including their password. It didn't work, but is there any way to get mailman to parse that variable in the footer? I went through all the source and couldn't find anything, but I'm more of a perl guy than python.
