Darn you and your logic..yes it makes sense to put the horse before the

Hi Florian,

The idea which intrigues me the most is that of the official tutorial or
educational video. Right in this area I would also put the idea of
augmenting our on-line help with brief video spots perhaps.

If anything along these lines gets rolling I would expect one would want
a standard, branding, either as an opening or closing or both. The
question comes to mind then, would that be a branding in a single
language or would your simply have a standard text.

Anyway - there is I think some room for promotional type vid's also..but
there is more value in the education pieces for sure.

I'm not sure how best to help these ideas along.

On the one hand we could try to map out an educational video project. We
could start a page with maybe some ideas for a series of promotional
type videos also.

We could maybe just start with a concrete plan for these branding
components.

Let's just look at an official opening and closing/credits sequence.

This would have a visual component and audio component.

I think the best way to proceed would be:

Generate a set of video files, minus audio tracks, for the opening and
closing sequences.

For the voice component of the sequences:

Generate the English copy, as text.

Create a reference audio track, in English, from this text.

Generate appropriate sub-title source file for this audio track/video
sequence.

Decide on where to store this set of files, the formats required and
who/how they can be used.

hmm that's it for an off the top of the head thought.

Best wishes,

//drew

Hi,

What's important to me is that the speaker's time is not wasted, i.e.
that we come up with a concrete plan on where and how to use those
files, e.g. in videos or the like.

There is already a lng list of suggested lines but i think they were for

The favourite one that only really works in English "Freedom never tasted so

I think you might mean Craig, perhaps Tom also..not sure either :-/

Anyway - the idea of making generic voice overs of parts that would be
re-used..for instance a audible LibreOffice tag line.

I'd say that a great idea.

We ought to be able to generate a short list - maybe a half dozen - of
phrases in the next day or two.

So - any idea on how much lead time this individual would require?

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] voiceovers for LibOCon

2011-07-25 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
OMG that looks excellent! I think you gave us a link to that particular one a
few months ago and in English? I think it's easier to talk about LibreOffice
without saying the name OpenOffice quite so much now but back then it was
fairly
vital.

I gave a wrong impression earlier. I often heavily criticise things i do
really
like. Drew's videos look excellent and i appreciate it's difficult to force a
good mix of people if the events themselves don't have the diversity. Where i
work there is a good variety but everyone else refuses to use non-MS. I don't
have skills in video or sound and am stretching myself to even use images.
Also
i'm not great at working with people otherwise everyone at work would have
switched to LibreOffice months ago.

Would the Vietnamese chap be willing to work at this? If there are other
videos
anything like the quality of Drew's in other countries then sampling a few of
them and putting it together might just completely solve the diversity problem.

Does the Vietnamese chap speak English? If so then please send me his email
address off-line in a personal email.

Regards from
Tom :)

Excellent points - so are you volunteering to work on this with
us..really.

For example the most professional video(s) so far are coming out of
Vietnam, I'd love to dub the latest to English and that idea has been
sitting languishing on my personal todo list for a while - would you
help do the leg work to make that happen.

http://vimeo.com/24069278

Would you take that on please - all I need at this point is contact with
the creator and an ok to generate a transcript...of course if they could
supply a Vietnamese copy that would help and English, well that would be
gold - but I haven't written an email - could I ask you to do that,
please.

Best wishes,

You're excited,
Of course your excited!

In fact time is just flying by.

October 12th to the 15th
Paris, France

The Document Foundation hosts the first

Be there!

I don't actually - but I don't see why it necessarily be rote for every
language, particularly something like this, it's not the same as a
tutorial IMO.

Well, it should not take long to try it out...

Also, just to see how it goes I;ve submitted the video to YouTube for a
computer generated transcript - they say a few days...we will see.

I've no real experience with generating tagged/timed captioning files as
used by YouTube - but I've read up enough to want to start trying to do
so. Meaning I suppose that I'll work on adding the timing marks to the
transcript above and then use either this, or the computer generated
captions, with the file. Should be sometime in the next 48 hours.

On this first promo - I don't see one or yesterday :-) take you pick.

There is a third and final Conference Promo short video in my editor - I
worked on the video transitions a little over the weekend and have it
right at 23 seconds (no credit screens yet)

- I think for this i have a personal deadline of this Friday
. At this point I have no idea what I will say

Would you take that on please - all I need at this point is contact with
the creator and an ok to generate a transcipt...of course if they couuld
supply a Vietnamese copy that would help and English, well that would be
gold - but I haven't written an email - could I ask you to do that,
please.

Best wishes,

You're excited,
Of course your excited!

It's an exciting time.
Things are moving...
fast!

In fact time is just flying by.

October 12th to the 15th
Paris, France

The Document Foundation hosts the first
LibreOffice Conference

Hi :)
I think people have already addressed everything i could think of to worry
about. I don't follow IIRC so i don't know what decisions have been taken but
what has filtered through to the mailing lists looks good and positive.

I worried that mp3 was the jpg of sound but i have been "reading up" about it
and it seems a lot of the lossy part is beyond normal human hearing range so
it's not as bad as i thought. I worried the M part might signify a proprietary
format but if it is it's not owned by MS apparently.

TDF shows almost no visible sign of ethnic or gender diversity. There are
seldom females in the videos, there is almost no ethnic diversity or age range
and no-one a natural suit-wearer or fashion-victim. There is sometimes a range
of accents and languages which is the only indication of TDF's natural
diversity. We alienate everyone that is not a male WASP between about 24 to 45
and wearing  a t-shirt.  However some of the best people in TDF are ladies;
Sophie, Barbara, Jean, Hal and so on. The problem is not going to be made
particularly worse by voice-overs but if the voice-overs could be done by a
lady
or a mix of voices then that might help.

2011-07-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
In Ubuntu the various different languages develop their own sites in their own
way. Not all pages are relevant to all languages. A language that has a
smaller community might not need to split up into so many smaller groups. You
might start your

http://mt.libreoffice.org
with only 2 pages; Home and Downloads. Then maybe later on add a forum and
other stuff you do want. Your "International Sites" 'page' could just be a
redirect people to the English page so that you wouldn't have to keep it
updated. You probably would not need sub-menus under the main menu. Perhaps
get a rough idea from the Japanese website which has less pages but still has
quite a few
http://ja.libreoffice.org/home/
I think that just 3 pages would be enough to start with?

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] voiceovers for LibOCon

2011-07-24 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think you can create your own websites as a central point. However, linking
in with existing systems makes it easier to attract and build up a community.
New people might already have an idea how to use, update, edit and add to what
you have or use the wider community to get help.

An ossmalta website might be excellent as a list of recommended projects with
links to the relevant parts of those projects. LibreOffice would be 1 item in
the list and clicking it would take people to your
http://mt.libreoffice.org/
website. The .org is a better ending then .com if you can get it. It fits
with
the FOSS philosophy better and seems larger and less limited somehow.

It's worth joining the Websites Mailing List to get better ideas of how to
build
something up and the localisers list to get ideas on how to get translations.

For discussions about websites and perhaps forums
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-involved/web-administrators/
LibreOffice doesn't have any official forums at the moment but i think you
could
add one to the Maltese site? It's worth asking the Websites Team for ideas
about how to do that.

For ideas about getting translations done
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-involved/localizers/

I'm not a translator but i would guess that it's fine to start with English or
Italian or something or perhaps google-translate or something to get something
rough "up and ready" fairly quickly. Then just translate a bit at a time when
you have time or encourage people to lend a hand. Perhaps start with getting
the Home & Download pages completed. Some things might be good as school or
college projects?

Ideally i guess it makes sense to delegate all the work for the various parts
to
other groups and just take a coordinating role.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Warren,

Cool - and I'm glad you popped onto the mailing list to follow up with
the request you stated on FaceBook.

So - first the promo video you asked about - the 'Many Voices' video.

http://www.youtube.com/user/libreoffice#p/c/3394BC60362F3DF6/0/SI4BjrxNwwA

Note: I'm still using the youtube LibreOffie Vols channel, but have just
recently begun using the LibreOffice channel. (more on that in a
different email)

I think you wanted the graphic files I used for the backgrounds.

You can find the files on the wiki:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Wallpapers

There is a little trick I do with the document icon, adding the scatter
motif and the Libo/TDF logo - but that is all generated within the video
editor, blending the different elements at runtime - the source for
those elements are also available on the wiki.

Though I do have a graphic of that rendering, but it hasn't really been
vetted in anyway.

OH - the voices, all from google BTW.

Then there is the second video
http://www.youtube.com/user/libreoffice#p/c/3394BC60362F3DF6/0/SI4BjrxNwwA

Image wise, again all images are available from the wiki - but I did
create special png files for use in the video from SVG sources on the
wikim, for the application icons and the paper airplane.

This one maybe is better suited for folks to add their own voice to.

If that interests you then there are two possible ways to proceed.

1) Simply make a recording of your voice and send it to me and I'll
replace my voice with yours.

2) I can send you the mp4 file, minus my voice, but with the music track
intact and you can mix your voice overtop.

Either way is good with me.

Let me know.

2011-07-21 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
For emailing you might try Thunderbird, Claws or Evolution. I would recommend
trying Thunderbird first as it seems the most advanced and developed of the 3.

As an instant messenger Pidgin or Empathy. I'm not sure if Empathy is
available
for Windows yet but if it is then it's worth trying that one first. I've only
tried Pidgin but i did quite like it even tho i dislike Instant Messengering
and
tweeting and all that.

I don't know if those can pull in the messages from Windows Live so it might be
worth testing it out even if it means creating a Windows Live account for
yourself for testing purposes before you recommend it to your colleagues.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Craig,

C. Olofson wrote on 2011-07-20 16:30:

There are voice-overs this person can do immediately, apart from
specific events. We can always use (and re-use) "thematic" statements
throughout our stock videos. This would be a great help since aural
branding can be as important as visual. Just a modest amount of
repetition will go a long way to building LibO's brand.

I agree. I just want to avoid that he does voiceovers for us, and in the
end, nobody uses them. Once bitten, twice shy - the video thing has so
far been not of much interest (see also my previous mail to that topic).

We can accept this person's generous offer right now by using already
available phrases (e.g. at libreoffice.org). We can then keep these "in
the can" to use as desired. For example, either of these could be made
the standard intro for all of 2011's conference video intros:

LibreOffice is the free power-packed Open Source personal productivity
suite for Windows, Macintosh and Linux, that gives you six
feature-rich applications for all your document production and data
processing needs

LibreOffice is a comprehensive, professional-quality productivity
suite that you can download and
install for free.
There is a large base of satisfied LibreOffice users worldwide, and it
is available in more than 30 languages and for all major operating
systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (Debian,
Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Suse, ...).

You can download , install
 and distribute
LibreOffice freely, with no fear of copyright infringement.

Sounds good to me! What do the others think?

Absolutely zero response...

Truth is though I don't see much interest from people in getting

There is some interest recently about training videos and certainly
there are plenty of tutorial type of videos coming out from different

indeed, the audio and video topic seems to be rather uninteresting for
people, sadly. :/ I recall I offered that voice-over topic many times,
and we have also talked about the video option a lot, also back in
OpenOffice.org times, but recepetion so far has not been that good --
although I think it would be an excellent thing to do.

I hope you don't get demotivated by the lack of feedback, and go on with

Some local Deaf associations/groups volunteer to do the signing for free.
Good catch on the signing issue and our deaf users/community.

There are voice-overs this person can do immediately, apart from
specific events. We can always use (and re-use) "thematic" statements
throughout our stock videos. This would be a great help since aural
branding can be as important as visual. Just a modest amount of
repetition will go a long way to building LibO's brand.

Hi :)
Personally i think it would be better to try subtitles and leave the normal
language as it was spoken by the person. If the subtitles could be in
something
like srt so that people could translate it for other languages then that would
be great. I think that might mean subtitles in English/American even when the
speaker is speaking in English/American.

This approach would emphasis the international nature of the project but it
might not be what people are looking for as i missed earlier emails (just
trying
to catch up now!).

What could be done is make a slide show presentation with facts and information
why people should use LibreOffice. Then make a video from that. Then we could
have a voice-over doing his/her work so it is an audio/visual presentation.

Once we have something like that, is could be used as a presentation video that
could be downloaded and shown to those potential users who like info-mercial
style of presentation to help choose LO as their office suite.
