2019-06-21 Thread Gianni Pavan
dear all, I would thank all those who offered photos of bowhead whales for
the guide of our Museum.
I thank you all for your kind contributes. Some good images have been
chosen among those sent by NOAA and we will acknowledge the contributor
directly.

With regard to the history of the bones of our Museum, I can tell you that
they arrived in 1783 sent to Lazzaro Spallanzani by Giuseppe Alessandro
Brambilla, surgeon of the emperor of Austria Joseph II. According to Luigi
Cagnolaro (our major whales expert, who died few years ago), these are the
only bones from Greenland whales found in an Italian museum.

[MARMAM] Searching annotated/labeled audio files of cetacean vocalizations

2018-09-07 Thread Gianni Pavan
dear all,
I'm searching public, free accessible, or private sound libraries,
either accessible for free or with fees, with collections of identified and
labeled/annotated cetacean species vocalizations. This is a preliminary
survey to locate possible sources of species-specific vocalizations to
exercise with species recognition programs. For this type of application it
is required to have at least hundreds of identified vocalizations for each
species, with "annotated files" where each individual sound is identified
and labelled; another option is to have a collection of files each one
containing only one sound unit. By searching on google many sound
libriaries pop up, but only Mobysound appears to have what I search. Any
info about other sources will be highly appreciated. Recordings of tonal
sounds are highly preferred.

thanks in advance

[MARMAM] New Report Available

2016-01-12 Thread Gianni Pavan
Dear colleagues,
on behalf of my coauthors I'm pleased to announce the availability of
the final report of a project granted by ACCOBAMS:

*OVERVIEW OF THE NOISE HOTSPOTS IN THE ACCOBAMS AREA*
*Part I – Mediterranean Sea*
Alessio MAGLIO, Gianni PAVAN, Manuel CASTELLOTE Silvia FREY

Short Abstract: Identifying areas of high anthropogenic pressure on the
marine environment is a key element for an effective environmental
management and for mitigating impacts. As underwater noise is considered a
major threat for cetaceans, the ACCOBAMS Agreement has undertaken a work
aiming at identifying noise hotspots and areas of potential conflicts with
cetacean conservation. The global aim of this project is to gather baseline
knowledge on noise-producing human activities in the Mediterranean Sea.

[MARMAM] IUCN status for the sperm whale

2013-06-15 Thread Gianni Pavan
Hi all,
recently IUCN set the status of Mediterranean sperm whales as
Endangered and not anymore data deficient. The given (sub)population
estimate is 2500 animals.

To better address our research based on the acoustic detections with
underwater platforms I'm willing to know on which studies this estimate has
been made. Any information will be appreciated.

[MARMAM] ERICE 2013 - deadline extension

2013-06-05 Thread Gianni Pavan
dear all, the deadline for the abstract submission for the Erice workshop
has been extended until June 23rd. After the deadline the acceptance of new
registrations will be still possible but conditioned by available places.

The program of the workshop and the list of invited lectures is available
here: http://www.unipv.it/cibra/FlyerErice2013_small.pdf
Please distribute it to anyone interested.

*The interdisciplinary workshop Cetacean echolocation and outer space
neutrinos: ethology and physics for an interdisciplinary approach to
underwater bioacoustics and detection of astrophysical particles will be
held in October 2013, 18th-21st, in Erice, Sicily, hosted by the School of
Ethology of the Ettore Majorana Centre. *

The development of underwater ocean observatories has stimulated new
interactions between disparate disciplines to optimize their sensors,
layout and protocols. One of the most promising synergies has come from
interactions between astrophysicists working to detect light and acoustic
signals from neutrinos and marine biologists listening to the sounds of
marine animals (Nosengo, Nature 462, December 2009).

The workshop is intended to join these different disciplines in the
understanding of the underwater acoustic world and in the development of
common research strategies and protocols to exploit the potential of
Submarine Multidisciplinary Observatiories (learn more on the SMO project
at http://web2.infn.it/smo/). The workshop will focus on the study of the
acoustic behaviour of marine mammals, on the acoustic detection of
neutrinos in the sea, on the sharing of detection technologies, and on the
related technological challenges with a wide interdisciplinary approach.

The expected audience would come from different disciplines, mainly marine
biology, marine bioacoustics, acoustics, mathematics, acoustical
oceanography, astroparticle physics and embraces many science fields
related with the study, monitoring and conservation of the marine
environment.

Top scientists will present the state of the art in their peculiar
disciplines and selected contributes will be presented by participants in a
context open to discussion and knowledge sharing. Researchers, scientists,
and students are all welcome in the exciting atmosphere of Erice to discuss
their projects, results and ideas.

Registration details and the workshop program:
http://www.unipv.it/cibra/erice

The participation cost is particularly attractive as it includes full
accomodation, a day trip, and transportation to and from the closest
airport.

[MARMAM] Workshop on cetacean acoustics, Erice 2013, first announcement

2013-01-31 Thread Gianni Pavan
*1st Announcement*

On behalf of the Organizing Committee composed by G.Pavan, P.Tyack,
G.Riccobene and W.Barletta, I'm glad to announce an interdisciplinary high
level workshop hosted by the School of Ethology of the Ettore Majorana
Centre, entitled Cetacean echolocation and outer space neutrinos: ethology
and physics for an interdisciplinary approach to underwater bioacoustics
and detection of astrophysical particles to be held in October 2013,
18th-21st in Erice, Sicily.

The development of underwater ocean observatories has stimulated new
interactions between disparate disciplines to optimize the their sensors
and layout. Observatories based upon underwater cables are expensive to
install and difficult to move, but they offer particular promise for long
term observational data sets unlike any gathered to date. The cost and
opportunity argue for planning and technical exchanges from as broad an
array of disciplines as possible. One of the least predictable synergies
has come from interactions between astrophysicists working to detect light
and acoustic signals from neutrinos and marine biologists listening to the
sounds of marine animals (Nosengo, Nature 462, December 2009).

The workshop will focus on the study of the acoustic behaviour of marine
mammals, on the acoustic detection of neutrinos in the sea, on the sharing
of detection technologies, and on the related technological challenges with
a wide interdisciplinary approach.

The workshop is intended to join these different disciplines in the
understanding of the underwater acoustic world and in the development of
common research strategies and protocols. On one side high level
technologies will be explored to improve acoustic detection capabilities,
to serve both biological and physical studies. On the other side, the
workshop will explore the sensory and cognitive skills that have allowed
mammals to successfully exploit the marine environment and to evolve as top
predators there by using acoustics.

The expected audience would come from different disciplines, mainly marine
biology, marine bioacoustics, ethology, acoustics, mathematics, acoustical
oceanography, astroparticle physics and embraces many science fields
related with the study, monitoring and conservation of the marine
environment.

Top scientists will present the state of the art in their peculiar
disciplines and selected contributes will be presented by participants in a
context open to discussion and knowledge sharing.

Some preliminary info are available here: www.unipv.it/cibra/erice2013.html

More details on the registration procedures and on the workshop program
will be available as soon as we will have a complete list of speakers and
talks.

[MARMAM] XXI IBAC - International Bioacoustic Congress - First announcement

2007-02-02 Thread Gianni Pavan

First Announcement
__

XXI IBAC - International Bioacoustic Congress
CIBRA, University of Pavia, 15-18 September 2007
__

The XXI International BioAcoustic Congress will
be held in the historical buildings of the
University of Pavia, Italy, where Spallanzani in
the 18th century studied the ability of bats to
fly in the dark. The Congress is organized, for
the third time, by CIBRA, the Interdisciplinary
Center for Bioacoustics and Environmental Research, University of Pavia.

The subject of bioacoustics is principally a
marriage between the fields of biology and
physical acoustics. Given its multidisciplinary
nature, the Congress aims to bring together, in
informal settings, biologists from different
specialisms (ethologists, physiologists,
taxonomists, ecologists, etc) with engineers,
sound archivists and amateur sound recordists, to
foster discussion and exchange of ideas.

During the Congress the 2nd European workshop on
animal sound research and libraries will be held.
The workshop will be organized by CIBRA for the
European Network of Bioacoustic Collections for
Taxonomy, Systematics and Conservation. The
network was created based on the agreement of
experts who attended the 1st workshop at the
Fonoteca Zoologica (Madrid), 27-30 September
2006, to foster cooperation among institutions,
researchers and interested amateurs to safeguard
animal sound recordings and to optimise their use
as a resource for research and nature conservation.

The Congress is based on thematic symposia that
will cover both the traditional research areas
and new emerging themes. To date, five symposia are planned:

Advanced tools for sound recording and analysis (G.Pavan et al.)
In-air communication in mammals (I.Charrier and D.Reby)
Monitoring the Environment: Bioacoustics as a
tool for inventory and monitoring of biodiversity (K.Frommolt, et al.)

The impacts of anthropogenic noise (Y.Yan, et al.)
Animal communication networks: from behaviour to brain (T.Aubin N.Mathevon)

Organizing Committee

Gianni Pavan, Claudio Fossati, Michele Manghi, Marco Priano

Scientific Committee

Richard Ranft, Nicolas Mathevon, Isabelle
Charrier, Thierry Aubin, Hong Young Yan, Matija
