Job Title:  Research Laboratory Assistant

Responsibilities:
Oversee data entry, quality control, updating, and maintenance for long-term
databases, including Access sighting data base (with more than 35,000
dolphin group sightings and 100,000 dolphin identifications from
1970-present), as well as sighting effort summaries, health databases,
data-entry progress checklists, assisting with data queries. Perform GIS
analyses and prepare maps as requested.  Assist with photographic
identification analyses, digitally trace all changed fins, and maintain
digital catalog of dorsal fin photographs for photo-id. Provide
administrative support, including expense accounting, procuring field and
laboratory supplies, copying, maintaining and updating Marine Mammal Library
and reprint supply, distribution of outreach materials, monitoring website
contacts, and over-seeing intern activities. Assist with proposal
preparation, data analyses and manuscript preparation. Assist with
logistical support and field activities of Research Program.  Field
activities may include photographic identification surveys, capture-release
operations, biopsy darting, human interaction research, fish sampling, and
associated environmental sampling.  Other related duties as assigned.  This
position is based in Sarasota, Florida.   

Requirements:  
Bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resources, marine sciences, or a
related field plus 3 years of experience working with a comparable cetacean
field research program (with appropriate letters of recommendation) required
or Master’s degree in biology, natural resources, marine sciences, or a
related field preferred .  Extensive computer experience required with
programs Access, Arcview (or ArcGIS), Excel, and Word. Computer software
experience preferred: ACDSee, Adobe Photoshop, Endnote, and statistical
packages. Proficiency in boat operations (19 ft +) required, with
demonstrated ability to trailer boats, including launching and retrieval.
Proficient swimmer required. Photographic experience desired.  Valid
driver’s license required for Florida residents within 90 days of hire;
valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.  Spanish
fluency a plus, but not required.

Qualifications:


 

An M.Sc./Ph.D. or equivalent degree in natural science or other field
relevant to marine science (e.g., D.Sc., D.V.M., D.Eng., and M.D).
Expertise in marine mammal and/or sea turtle biology is required; preferred
scientific disciplines include life history (age determination and/or
reproductive biology), natural history (e.g., feeding ecology), pathology,
functional anatomy, or physiology. At least five-years experience with
strandings and necropsies of either group of animals is desired.  Applicants
must demonstrate the ability to produce peer-reviewed scientific
publications and to acquire extramural funding.   

 


Duties and Responsibilities:


 

The successful candidate will (a) conceive of sound basic and applied
research questions, and (b) design and execute all phases of research
including proposal preparation, data collection, analysis, and
interpretation.  The candidate is expected to produce significant
peer-reviewed professional publications (at least two each year);
participate in professional organizations and meetings; and interact with
other scientists and research programs at MML and elsewhere.  He/she will
seek grants, contracts, and other extramural funds in support of his/her
salary and the research and staff expenses for the program, including
indirect costs, with the expectation of securing full funding for the
program within two years.  The candidate must have a working knowledge of
funding sources and programs, and a record of successful proposals.
Demonstrated experience in managing other research personnel is expected,
including interviewing and hiring; training of staff for work-place safety,
quality assurance, and other institutional policies and programs; technical
training of staff; daily supervision; delegation of field or laboratory
duties; evaluation of staff performance; and resolution of personnel
problems.  The successful candidate may also be responsible for overseeing
work of visiting scientists, postdoctoral scientists, student interns, or
volunteers. Partial coverage of a 24/7 stranding pager is expected. The
successful candidate will oversee a recently refurbished necropsy
laboratory, and the maintenance of response equipment (4x4 truck, two
personal watercrafts and one all-terrain vehicle).   An extensive marine
mammal osteological collection, a wide range of archived tissues and a
multi-decadal database are also available. 

 

Applicants should have excellent communication skills and have working
knowledge of computer databases. Familiarity with Access and GIS is
encouraged. The position involves physical activity such as lifting and
moving heavy animals under challenging environmental conditions.  Boating
experience and the ability to swim are required. U.S. citizenship or foreign
citizen’s U.S. work permit appropriate for the work is required. All
employees must comply with the requirements outlined in the MML Employee
Policy Manual. 

 

Salary: $45,000-$55,000/yr, with full fringe benefits

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY

Animal Biologist

 

The Department of Biology at Hofstra University invites applications for a
full-time, tenure-track, assistant professor position in any sub-discipline
in Organismal Biology.  The successful candidate will be qualified to teach
an introductory Animal Form and Function course, as well as courses that
compliment current and future department interests (including, but not
exclusive to urban ecology, environmental biology, vertebrate biology,
physiology, fresh water/marine biology).  An interest in and/or experience
with innovative teaching techniques is especially desirable.  We seek an
individual who is able to teach courses at a variety of levels, i.e. to
non-majors, undergraduate majors, and Master's students.  Faculty in Biology
must maintain an active research program accessible to both undergraduate
and Master's level students. The specific areas of research are open,
however candidates who use an integrative, interdisciplinary approach are
encouraged to apply.  The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in a
relevant discipline and demonstrated teaching experience.  Post-doctoral
experience is preferred. Candidates should submit a letter of application,
