[MARMAM] SAVING THE VAQUITA: ARE WE DOING ALL WE CAN?
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: SAVING THE VAQUITA: ARE WE DOING ALL WE CAN? Date:Sunday, 27 November 2011 Time: 900 AM – 430 PM Workshop Leaders: Thomas A. Jefferson and Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho Sponsor: ¡VIVA Vaquita! (a collaborative effort of Cetos Research Organization, the American Cetacean Society, and Save the Whales) Attendance: Open to anyone (please register on SMM website), but limited to 50 people Cost: Free (coffee and drinks provided) Summary: One species of cetacean (the baiji, Lipotes vexillifer) has recently gone extinct, and there is another species teetering on the edge (the vaquita, Phocoena sinus). Several other species and populations of marine mammals are nearly there, or will likely reach this point in our lifetimes. The majority of marine mammal biologists work mostly with species that are relatively abundant, and they do not spend much of their time doing public awareness/education work relating to endangered species. The question is: are we doing all we can as marine mammal specialists to help avoid future marine mammal extinctions? The goal of this workshop will be to explore ways to better use our skills, knowledge, and resources as marine mammal specialists to help save the World’s most endangered species of marine mammal, the vaquita. The workshop will have relevance to other endangered species and populations of marine mammals. Format: There will be several background presentations in the morning, and the afternoon sessions will be focused around small-group discussions. Outputs will include a short workshop summary and assignments of task actions identified at the workshop. The goal will be to develop a “Vaquita Task Force” to push forward various initiatives aimed at using our special abilities as marine mammal specialists to reverse the tragic precedent of the baiji – and help save the vaquita. Sign up for the workshop on the SMM conference website: http://www.marinemammalscience.org/index.php?option=com_content; view=articleid=591Itemid=336workshop=1 * Thomas A. [MARMAM] Requesting Books and Reprints on Marine Mammals
Requesting Books and Reprints on Marine Mammals ¡VIVA Vaquita! is seeking donations or sales of books, reprints, and scientific journals on marine mammals. Our intent is to collect literature that may not be in use anymore, and distribute it to colleagues who can most effectively put it to use. The money raised from this effort will be used directly in research, conservation, and public awareness efforts directed at the vaquita (Phocoena sinus), seen by most as the World’s most endangered marine mammal species. ¡VIVA Vaquita! http://www.vivavaquita.org is a collaboration of concerned researchers and educators from three nonprofit organizations: Cetos Research Organization, Save The Whales, and the American Cetacean Society. Our goals and mission are to generate awareness of the vaquita and to promote a healthy Upper Gulf of California ecosystem. Ultimately, we aim to help save the vaquita from extinction, and to do so in a way that also provides long-term benefits to the fisherman and other residents of Baja California, Mexico. If you have any books or other literature that you might be willing to donate or sell to us, please contact us so that we may discuss arrangements. Donations are tax-deductible. [MARMAM] Call for Marine Mammal Photos
Dear Colleagues, Tom Jefferson, Marc Webber, and Bob Pitman are preparing a comprehensive marine mammal identification guide, which will include detailed species accounts, multiple illustrations by artist Brett Jarrett, illustrated keys, and a large collection of full-color photos. We are aiming to produce the most comprehensive and authoritative identification guide to marine mammals. It will be published by Academic Press/Elsevier in late 2007. We have assembled an impressive collection of photos, covering nearly every species of marine mammal. The following species are ones that we still need help with: Sei whale (Baleanoptera borealis) Pygmy and dwarf sperm whales (Kogia spp.) Arnoux’s beaked whale (Berardius arnuxii) Mesoplodonts (Mesoplodon spp.) Short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus – Japanese forms) Atlantic humpback dolphin (Sousa teuszii) Hourglass dolphin (Lagenorhynchus cruciger) Spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris – dwarf subspecies) Short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis – Black Sea form) Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) Caribbean monk seal (Monachus tropicalis) Ross seal (Ommatophoca rossii) Baikal seal (Pusa sibirica) Caspian seal (Pusa caspica) Japanese sea lion (Zalophus californianus) Southern fur seals (Arctocephalus spp.) However, we would be very interested in seeing any photos of other species that you might want us to consider as well. Unfortunately, we cannot pay photographers for use of photos. However, if we use your photos, we may be able to offer you a free copy of the book (which we expect to cost about US$40-55). This would be for one-time use, and there would be no restrictions on further use by the photographer. We would need good quality slides or digital images (the highest possible resolution, which if too big to be emailed, can be sent on a CD). Please send queries about pinniped photos to Marc Webber [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Queries about photos of any other species of marine mammals should be sent to Thomas Jefferson [EMAIL PROTECTED] . We appreciate your help with this request, and look forward to hearing from you. * Thomas A.
