Description: Whale-watching activities are widely spread over the world
in many locations where each single sighting is precious both for
scientific and management points of view. However, whale-watching
companies do not always report their activities or sightings. The
workshop will give the opportunity to experts to discuss and assess
joint actions in order to enhance the framework between companies,
scientists and decision makers. Initially the workshop will illustrate
some recent key actions in different countries for reporting activities
and improving collaborative whale-watching data collection. Then, the
workshop will encourage discussions between experts, in breakout groups,
each focusing on a specific topic about the challenges of efficient
collaborations. The workshop will be an opportunity to exchange
experience and lessons learnt between different regions and to support
the establishment of an international network made to enhance
collaborative activities with marine mammal tourism.

[MARMAM] ECS WORKSHOP Crossing the trail of cetaceans (April 17th)

2023-03-20 Thread a.servidio
Dear Marmam Community,

In the framework of the up-coming ECS conference (O'Grove, April 18th -
21st) and thanks to the collaboration between the projects LIFE CONCEPTU
MARIS and IMPEL EU MTT, Triton Research srl is organizing a networking
workshop on the monitoring of cetaceans by ferries/large ships.

The workshop intitle "Crossing the trail of cetaceans: harmonising and
improving EU transborder monitoring of cetacean using ferries/large vessels
as multidisciplinary research vessels to support the EU Nature Legislative
framework" will be held on the April 17th, between 15:00 and 18:30.

Large scale, international cooperation is a prerequisite for scientific
programmes aiming at supporting the legislative requirements and enhance the
conservation of cetacean species. Long term programmes were run in EU waters
for the monitoring of cetacean species using operating ferries/cargo as
research platform. During recent years, effort was put in place for
networking among initiatives, fine tuning methodological approaches,
supporting multidisciplinary procedures and advancing the use of new
technologies.

The workshop will explore all the phases, from protocol to data collection,
data analysis, guideline, practicalities, and tools, and aims at advancing
awareness on the state of the art of programmes and projects dealing with
the interface between science and policy. Starting from the main
advancements reached by two wide range projects, the IMPEL EU MTT and the
LIFE CONCEPTU MARIS, the WS finally aims at improving the sharing of
experiences with other projects and initiatives, delineating new
perspectives for large scale international cooperation.

[MARMAM] ECS Workshop

2023-03-03 Thread Nicola Hodgins
Dear MARMAM Community,

In the side-lines of the 34th annual conference of the European Cetacean
Society, WDC is pleased to be hosting a half-day workshop in the afternoon of
the 17th April entitled: Utilising the ECS ‘Hivemind’ to Expand Knowledge of
Small Cetacean Ecosystem Functioning.

The aim of this workshop is to explore the research gaps in small cetacean
ecosystem functioning and how we can collaborate to advance understanding,
leading to meaningful policy change. Following a short overview of the current
understanding of small cetacean ecosystem functioning (including projects
currently underway) we envisage an open workshop session with the ultimate aim
of identifying outline projects and potential collaborations that WDC will look
to work with further. Topics of discussion during the workshop session will
include:

- What else do we know about small cetacean ecosystem functioning?
- What data already exists that could be useful in enhancing understanding of
this topic?
- How can we ensure standard protocols for data collection? Do these need to be
developed?
- How can we utilise ongoing research to provide missing data?
- Identification of possible collaborators / research partners? Funding sources?
- What does a major research project on this topic look like? Is it even viable?
Please get in touch if you are interested in either attending or presenting on
relevant work – nicola.hodg...@whales.org –
please note that places are limited.

Cheers,
  Nicola

[MARMAM] ECS workshop - 'Welfare in the Wild: Welfare Science – Current Understanding and Next Steps to Assessment and Application'

2018-03-04 Thread Stockin, Karen
Dear Colleagues,

With pleasure we announce the forthcoming workshop 'Welfare in the Wild:
Welfare Science – Current Understanding and Next Steps to Assessment and
Application' to be held 6th April, prior to the upcoming coming European
Cetacean Society conference to La Spezia, Italy.

Thanks to generous support from the International Fund for Animal Welfare, fees
have been waived for this half-day workshop. Registration will begin from
12.30pm, with the workshop commencing 1pm sharp and expected to wrap up by no
later than 6pm.

Please email co-organizer Isabella Clegg
izzicl...@hotmail.co.uk to register your place
at this workshop.

Abstract
Scientific evaluations of animal welfare contribute critical information to
ethical, legal and political debates about the ways in which humans impact wild
animals and their habitats. Increasingly, human activities, influence not only
the survival but also the welfare of wild animals. The investigation of animal
welfare via rigorous scientific methods (i.e. welfare science) is a relatively
recent development, and especially within its infancy when considering marine
mammals. For example, limited scientific literature exists concerning welfare
science, with most focused on captive animals. However, as welfare is the
balance of positive and negative affective states, its application to wild
animals is both necessary and warranted, especially within the Anthropocene.
Naturally, key differences in the approach to measuring wild animal welfare
exist, with the primary difficulty being access to the animals themselves.
Nevertheless, recent technological advances (e.g. drones) alongside the advent
of non-invasive behavioural, physiological and cognitive measures can
collectively serve to advance the field of wild welfare assessment.

This workshop will review what welfare priorities exist for wild populations
and identify what methods /technology/tools are best applied to address matters
of welfare in the wild. Furthermore, conservation welfare, the emerging
discipline which represents the nexus between the scientific disciplines of
animal welfare and conservation, will further be addressed. Here the aim will
be to identify what scientific principles are needed to best inform
decision-making so as to ensure best conservation objectives are met while also
maximizing welfare outcomes for the individual animals involved (e.g.
Conservation interventions).

We look to seeing you in La Spezia!

[MARMAM] ECS Workshop on Communication

2018-02-14 Thread Luigi Bundone

Dear Marmamers,

we would kindly like to announce the 6th Workshop
on "Communicating marine mammal science to the general public" focused
on
"Plastic litter and marine mammals: how communication can properly
address the issue"

Aim:

* share information on the topic related
to education
* exchange and develop applicable protocols to address
education
* foster general networking with all stakeholders
*
support ECS to address educational questions

Anticipated outcome:

*
protocol related to objectives and strategies of communication
*
recommendations to prioritise activities for the prevention or
mitigation of plastic pollution in the marine environment
* provide
useful tools and instruments to address the issue

Abstract:

In this
sixth successive workshop in the area of communication we want to
continue to share educational and outreaching experiences of
communicating marine mammal science to the general public. These
experiences can be educational programs that support school or
university curricula, pedagogical outreach materials such as books,
videos, kits, activities and exhibitions.

This year's workshop will
address the growing problem of plastic litter (macro and micro plastic)
in the marine environment representing a great threat to marine mammals
and some approaches to communicate the problem and address solutions.

The workshop will be divided in two parts. In the morning session
several invited speakers will shed light on the following aspects of the
topic:

* general introduction of the subject including related
aspects (chemical pollution in conjunction with micro and macro
plastics), sources of information, educational tools and communication
activities
* case study examples based on actual research in the field
(sensitization campaign, citizen science)
* case studies of addressing
the issue effectively, involving marine and coastal stakeholders (in
particular fishermen)

The afternoon session will focus on a general
discussion in the plenum and/ or working groups that will be formed at
the end of the morning session. The second session will depend very much
on the input of the participants in sharing their experiences as well as
addressing challenges they are currently facing. A draft of a protocol
related to objectives and strategies of communication will be presented
and discussed. A more detailed programme e.g. with abstracts will soon
be published and send to you on request.

[MARMAM] ECS WORKSHOP: Future JCP - spaces still available!

2016-02-18 Thread kelly.macl...@jncc.gov.uk
Dear all,

At the 30th Annual Conference of the European Cetacean Society, Madeira the
UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) are hosting a workshop titles
"The
Joint Cetacean Protocol: lessons learned and looking to the future". We have a
few spaces left and are particularly keen to attract participants from North
Sea bordering countries.

For background to the JCP, see the JNCC website:
http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-5657

For more in detail on the workshop, see below or visit ECS workshop page:
http://www.europeancetaceansociety.eu/conference/workshops-0

The workshop will be held on:

Sunday, 13th March (full day)

Participation fee €25

To register or further information contact:
tim.d...@jncc.gov.uk

Overview:
The
Joint Cetacean Protocol (JCP) is an ambitious initiative that assembled
effort-related cetacean sightings datasets from all major UK, and some European
sources. These data represented the largest cetacean sightings resource ever
collated in Europe and comprised: 38 data sources from at least 542 distinct
survey platforms; over 1 million km of effort; and covered a 17 year period
(1994-2010) in a region from the continental shelf edge west of Ireland to the
Kattegat.

There were 3 phases of analysis, which aimed to:
1.identify all relevant north-west (NW) European cetacean sightings data
available;
2.investigate the power these data had to assess trends/changes in
abundance and distribution and how to improve that power;
3.define standards for collection and storage of data;
4.facilitate sharing of standardised cetacean datasets via a web portal; and
5.develop methods for the production of cetacean distribution maps and
estimates of both abundance and changes in abundance.

Each of these was met with varying levels of success and the workshop will
review the outputs of the JCP to date. In doing so, lessons learned from the
different analytical phases will be identified and will help scope the need and
approach to a new phase of work. In discussing this, existing and potential
data providers will be invited to present new datasets and/or data standards
implemented and this will be opportunity to build wider European partnerships.

The output from the workshop will be a draft scope for a new phase of the JCP,
which will include identification of objectives, broad approach (data
standards, contribution and analysis) and essential partnerships. Building on
and broadening the geographic scope of the JCP brings with it greater potential
to improve reporting and assessment for, as examples, the Habitats Directive
and Marine Strategy Framework Directive, of European cetacean populations.

[MARMAM] ECS Workshop on Ethics

2015-02-21 Thread Adriana Vella
Dear All,

Please note that among the various interesting workshops available this
year being organized in association with the ECS Conference to be held in
MALTA this March, there is the *HALF DAY WORKSHOP ON ETHICS **on Sunday the
22nd March 2016 **AM.*

*Please find more info below and book your seats soon :)*

*Developing Professional Ethics Guidelines for European Cetacean
Researchers*

*Workshop Organizer Contact: **ECM Parsons* ecm-parsons(at)earthlink.net

Many professional societies have developed professional ethical guidelines,
such as the Society for Conservation Biology, the Society for Wetland
Scientists and recently the Society for Marine Mammalogy. However,
situations have arisen in the European cetacean research field that are
unique to the region and field; for example, issues affected by European
national laws, customs or traditions. This workshop aims to produce a
specific set of ethical guidelines that deals with, and provides
professional practice advice and guidance for, European scientists in the
cetacean research field. *These guidelines would reference:*

   - Research conduct
   - The intersect with politics and policy
   - Dealing with the media
   - Publication ethics
   - Working in other (developing) countries
   - Respecting indigenous cultures
   - Fund-raising and ethics
   - Competition and bullying
   - Equality issues (gender, sexual orientation and minorities)
   - Inappropriate behavior (e.g., sexual harassment )
   - Environmental impact of research
   - Animal welfare

The workshop will start with a short introduction to the field of
professional ethics, with examples of appropriate literature and
hypothetical case studies.
The workshop will then split into focus groups to discuss specific issues
and ethical concerns, followed by one or more discussion sessions.

Proposed output: A set of proposed guidelines and short report for the ECS
council

Best wishes

[MARMAM] ECS workshop Exploring technologies for improved data capture from platform of opportunity surveys of marine mammals

2014-03-04 Thread Bouveroux Thibaut
Dear ECS and MARMAM readers,

On Saturday 5th April 2014 at the upcoming European Cetacean Society conference
in Liege the following workshop on “Exploring technologies for improved data
capture from platform of opportunity surveys of marine mammals will be held in
the Aquarium.
This workshop is organized by the Atlantic Research Coalition (ARC) the largest
European partnership of ferry surveying organisations and will run in the
afternoon from 1400-1800.
We still have few places remaining, but we are strongly interested by people
able to present a short talk on the topic of new technologies for improving
data capture (5-7mins). If you are interested could you please provide us a
short abstract (200 word), outlining your work.

Short summary:
In recent years, due to increasing development and decreasing cost,
technologies for infield data capture of marine mammals has become widely
available to many survey programmes. In particular the use of web and GIS
enabled mobile devices, such as phones, tablets and PDAs, can help in improving
data collection on platforms of opportunity (ferries, whale watching boats,
fisheries vessels etc) where in the past data has suffered from issues relating
to miscapture by surveyors or labour intensive transcription from paper
records. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is to explore the recent
development of these new technologies for wide implementation across networks
of opportunistic platforms. This will be achieved through a combination of case
studies from invited speakers trialling new approaches and guided discussion of
the advantages and limiting factors of such technologies in application at
different campaign scales. Outcomes of the workshop included increased
efficiency of data collected via these networks and provide direct benefit and
implication to policy demands for marine mammal monitoring (e.g. Marine
Strategy Framework Directive, Habitats Directive) and other proposed survey
programmes (i.e. SCANS III).

So, if you would like to attend or offer to do a presentation at this workshop.

2014-02-24 Thread Hélène Labach
Dear All,

In the framework of the 28th ECS Conference (Liège, 2014), Pelagos
Sanctuary plans a workshop entitled *Scientific progress on cetaceans and
perspectives in the Pelagos Sanctuary* that will run on the 5th of April
2014 during the all day.

The Pelagos Sanctuary is an international agreement between France, Italy
and the Principality of Monaco signed in 1999 and entered into force in
2002, for conciliating social and economic activities development with
marine mammals and habitat protection, in compliance with a management
plan. With about 87,500 sq. km, most of which lie in high Seas, the Pelagos
Sanctuary is registered as a Special Protected Area of Mediterranean
Importance (SPAMI).
The aim of this workshop is to implement an assessment of the scientific
activities on marine mammals conducted in the Pelagos area since its
creation, identify the gaps and perspectives to be developed. Focus will be
devoted on the following topics:
- knowledge of cetacean populations

[MARMAM] *ECS Workshop announcement: Estimating the probability of detection from passive acoustic data*

2014-02-20 Thread Anna Cucknell
Hello ECS and MARMAM readers

Apologies for cross posting.

On Saturday 5th April 2014 at the upcoming European Cetacean Society
conference in Liege a discussion workshop on Estimating the probability of
detection from passive acoustic data will be held in the Aquarium. The
workshop will cost 10 Euros and will run from in the afternoon from
1400-1800.

Background: Assessing the status of cetacean populations, and the impacts of
and level of risk associated with anthropogenic activities is hampered by
limited abundance estimates for many areas. While abundance estimation by
visual means is possible for cetaceans, surveys are often limited by weather
conditions, eye height of observers, availability bias, high cost and
observer inconsistency. For those species that vocalise routinely, passive
acoustic techniques have been proposed as a more accurate and efficient
method of detection and can be utilised in poor weather conditions and at
night time.

Absolute abundance and population estimates from acoustic data have been
derived for animals which vocalise loudly and predictably, such as sperm
whales. However for animals which do not vocalise constantly or produce
vocalisations that may be relatively quiet or highly directional, the
probability of detection, needs to be determined empirically in order to
calculate absolute abundance or density estimates from acoustic edata.
Abundance estimation using acoustic techniques rely on deriving a
probability of detection which not only accounts for the amount of time an
animal vocalises, but also accounts for those times when vocalisations might
not be detected when animals orientate away from the hydrophone, temporarily
reduce the source level of vocalisations or when the depth of a vocalising
animal may influence likelihood of detection. Several research groups have
collected acoustic data sets utilising static recorders or line transect
methodologies and due to weather constraints, logistical limitations, poor
planning or suboptimal sighting conditions, were not able to collect visual
and / or acoustic data which would allow the probability of detection and
the level of responsive movement to be characterised.

These data could substantially increase our knowledge on the seasonal and
regional abundance of species and inform critical conservation and
management actions.

Objectives: For this workshop we aim to bring together interested scientists
in order to discuss and brainstorm methodologies suitable for providing
probabilities of detection in order to 'unlock' the previously collected
datasets, albeit with some caveats. Additionally we would like to stimulate
discussion on the development of best practise for estimating probability of
detection when acoustic data are being collected, especially for those areas
and species where visual techniques are significantly constrained.

The workshop will discuss methods to estimate the probability of detection
for towed and static passive acoustic studies with particular focus on
discussing the challenges animal group size, vocalisation depth, background
noise and behavioural adaptations to vocalisation rate and detectability add
to estimating the probability of detection.

If you would like to attend or offer to do a presentation at the workshop
please contact: mailto:acukn...@mcr-team.org acukn...@mcr-team.org.

[MARMAM] ECS workshop on Aquatic mammals from Latin America

2014-02-04 Thread Krishna Das
Hello,

On Saturday 5 April 2014 (afternoon) at the upcoming Annual Conference of
the European Cetacean Society, there will be an international workshop on:

*WORKSHOP ON AQUATIC MAMMALS FROM LATIN AMERICA. *

Abstract: The workshop (WS) intends to discuss current problems faced by
aquatic mammals that inhabit Latin American waters. The perspective of the
continent's economic growth and the consequent use and degradation of its
rivers and coastal zones constitutes a matter of concern for the
conservation of coastal and riverine aquatic mammals. A large set of
construction works is planned for the establishment of hydroelectric power
plants, harbours, shipyards and industries on Latin American rivers and
coastal bays. Many of these aquatic systems have been suffering from a
large series of different types of pressure, as well as they have been
going through broad dredging and even submarine demolishing. This
anthropogenic pressure results in habitat degradation, physical, acoustic
and chemical pollution and their consequences. Some Latin American bays
seem to be on the same degradation path once followed by one of the most
anthropogenically-disturbed estuaries around the globe, the Guanabara Bay
(GB), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Guanabara Bay presents a residual Guiana
dolphin (*Sotalia guianensis*) population assessed to be around 40
individuals only. The situation of the GB dolphins exemplifies the fact
that many populations from species that are not officially regarded as
threatened are facing extinction, which may hamper the gene flow. Taking
this problem into consideration, the situation of riverine aquatic mammals
should be highlighted, since hydroelectric dams may hamper the gene flow as
well. Other examples of species regarded as common yet being regionally
threatened are provided by bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops truncatus*) and
South American sea lion (*Otaria flavescens*). T. truncatus presents many
local populations in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina being small, isolated
and declining due to the effects of ever increasing anthropogenic impacts
as pollution, overfishing and bycatch. Concerning the abovementioned
pinniped species, the situation of the sharp population decline of the
Uruguay and northern Argentina stocks should be emphasised. Small and
endemic coastal cetacean species, as franciscana dolphins (*Pontoporia
blainvillei*) and vaquita (*Phocoena sinus*) are particularly vulnerable to
incidental catches in gillnets, and the high levels of mortality are
responsible for the critical conservation status of both species. Of
particular interest is the La Plata river estuary, one of the most impacted
environments in the world, characterized by continental inputs of organic
and inorganic contaminants, as well as drugs. Precisely, P. blainvillei
inhabits the outer zone of the estuary of the river. Although intentional
hunting of marine mammals still exists in a few Latin American nations,
most countries have ceased to hunt a few decades ago, using marine mammals
in a non-lethal way to increase their socio-economic standards. However,
the ever-increasing touristic activities focused on aquatic mammals also
raise concern. This is especially important in the north of Brazil, where
the artificial feeding of botos (*Inia spp.*) for tourism seems to be
insufficiently controlled. In this context, the WS intends to discuss the
status of the Araguaian boto (*Inia araguaiaensis*), the new species of
river dolphin from Brazil, as well as the current situation of the most
threatened species of Latin America. For accomplishing this last task, the
WS intends also to discuss the recovery of mysticeti and sirenian
populations after the hunting period, as well as the conservation status of
the most endangered mustelid species, such as the giant (*Pteronura
brasiliensis*), the marine (*Lontra felina*) and the southern river (*Lontra
provocax*) otters.

[MARMAM] ECS workshop on pollutants in marine mammals

2014-02-04 Thread Krishna Das
Hello,

On Sunday 6 April 2014 (morning) at the upcoming Annual Conference of the
European Cetacean Society, there will be an international workshop on:

*New developments in toxicological studies in marine mammals. *

Abstract: It has been shown, numerous times already, that marine mammals
are exposed to a wide variety of pollutants and that they also experience
the toxic impact of these pollutants on their health and overall
well-being. Since pollution is an ever-changing issue, the methods,
approaches and techniques to assess or detect pollution must be equally
dynamic. The goals of this workshop are to provide overviews of current
practices and to highlight gaps in current knowledge. Since some of these
gaps can be filled by non-toxicologists, this workshop will be open for
everybody.

[MARMAM] ECS Workshop on Best Practise in Rescue

2013-01-21 Thread Sarah Dolman
Dear ECS and MARMAM members

The Science Advisory Committee of the European Cetacean Society is holding a
full day workshop entitled 'Best Practise in Rescue' at the 27th ECS Annual
Conference in Setubal, Portugal on Sunday 7th April 2013.

Marine mammal strandings and entanglements generate a significant welfare issue
on the coasts and in the seas of Europe. Such events elicit a strong response
from humans to intervene for the perceived benefit of the individuals
concerned. Appropriate action has the potential to return an animal to the
wild to become a fully integrated and productive member of the local population
and species as a whole. However, inappropriate action, despite the good
intentions driving it, can exacerbate the animal welfare problem and
potentially have more serious consequences for the welfare and conservation of
the individual, species and other species living in the same environment.

The Science Advisory Committee has agreed that this is an appropriate topic for
discussion in its series of 'Best Practice' workshops, with a view to making
suitable recommendations for rescue, and invites scientists and rescuers
directly or indirectly involved with this field, or with opinions on this
matter to participate in this workshop.

The workshop is open to any ECS member and is free of charge. Please email me
if you would like to sign up to attend
