Ultima Ratio Regum
by Stephen Spender

The guns spell money's ultimate reason
In letters of lead on the spring hillside.
But the boy lying dead under the olive trees
Was too young and too silly
To have been notable to their important eye.
He was a better target for a kiss.

When he lived, tall factory hooters never summoned him.
Nor did restaurant plate-glass doors revolve to wave him in.
His name never appeared in the papers.
The world maintained its traditional wall
Round the dead with their gold sunk deep as a well,
Whilst his life, intangible as a Stock Exchange rumour, drifted outside.

O too lightly he threw down his cap
One day when the breeze threw petals from the trees.
The unflowering wall sprouted with guns,
Machine-gun anger quickly scythed the grasses;
Flags and leaves fell from hands and branches;
The tweed cap rotted in the nettles.

Consider his life which was valueless
In terms of employment, hotel ledgers, news files.
Consider. One bullet in ten thousand kills a man.
Ask. Was so much expenditure justified
On the death of one so young and so silly
Lying under the olive tree, O world, O death?

John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods, has long worried about the
sustainability of the free enterprise system if large numbers of voters
come to think of businesses as “basically a bunch of psychopaths running
around trying to line their own pockets.” If the public doesn’t think
business is fundamentally good, he has argued, then business is inviting
destructive regulation. If, by contrast, business shows responsibility
to all its stakeholders—customers, employees, investors, suppliers and
the wider community—“the impulse to regulate and control would be lessened.”

Of course ‘terrorism’ is a blanket term which the Syrian regime employs
against any dissent. And the main targets of Russia’s imperialist
adventures have not been the Daesh (ISIS) fascists. Instead Russia’s
military might is directed at Syria’s resistance militias and civilians
living in liberated zones which have become death camps under the
state’s scorched earth tactics and crippling blockades. It’s the working
class suburbs and rural districts of Hama and Idlib, those that raged so
fiercely against the regime, that are today being pounded by Russian
airstrikes. The people attacked in Homs are those who defeated Daesh a
year ago. More than 234 civilians including at least 83 children have
perished under Russian airstrikes.[1] Hospitals have been targeted as
well as bread distribution depots, civilian councils, and archaeological
and historical sites. Tens of thousands have been driven from their
homes, many the victims of previous displacements, now sheltering under
trees or in caves as winter threatens.

A back of the envelope review of "Spotlight", a film about the Boston
Globe investigative reporting on the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal.
It is a well-constructed narrative with good performances but I kept
thinking the son of "All the President's Men" since it is almost a
paint-by-numbers copy of the original. With Ben Bradlee Jr. (played by
John Slattery of "Mad Men") in a pivotal role just as his father was in
the Watergate film, you can hardly avoid the similarities. The problem
is that none of the characters have any intrinsic interest. They only
function as sleuths. Instead of "Deep Throat", they rely on a Catholic
priest who broke ranks and became a psychotherapist dealing in sex abuse
cases. It was very earnest and very timely. What it lacked was human
drama, probably a function of the sex abuse victims playing only a
secondary role in the film.

Given the police murder of a six-year old boy in a car with his father in New
Orleans this past week, I found this line in Spencer's poem heartbreaking: "He
was a better target for a kiss."

Another sign of the decline of Political Marxism. Bruno Teschke breaks
ranks.

A bit of tax, poetry and fun, starting with a terrible pun in the
heading (sort of like a dad's joke for Australian tax people)

A partial foray into tax

He thrives
I exist
That is the cyst
Their system of untax
