Stowing himself on a ship, Karski reached London where he had an
interview with the foreign secretary Anthony Eden, the first of many top
officials to effectively ignore his account of the Nazis’ systematic
effort to exterminate European Jewry. The very enormity of Karski’s
report paradoxically worked against him being believed, and paralysed
any action against the killings.

Logistically unable to reach Poland, preoccupied with fighting the war
on many fronts, and unwilling to believe even the Nazis capable of such
bestiality, the Allies put the Holocaust on the back burner.

When Karski took his tale across the Atlantic, the story was the same.
President Roosevelt heard him out, then asked about the condition of
horses in Poland. Another high-ranking official, Felix Frankfurter,
though Jewish himself, told Karski: “I’m not calling you a liar. It’s
just that I have difficulty in believing you.” In desperate frustration
Karski wrote this book to record in searing detail what he had seen with
his own eyes.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — A U.N. team says it found a secret underground
detention center at a Sri Lankan navy base where many post-civil war detainees
were believed to have been interrogated and tortured. The navy, however, denied
there was any such center at the base.

I would note, though, that there is a clear time limit on the state of
emergency.

In the U.S., all sorts of institutional garbage has accompanied the
post-9-11 innovations. Homeland Security becomes a permanent,
undiscussable institution designated as having the final authority in all
such things. So long as that's around and growing, the power of the state
will grow accordingly.

One more, because it came out yesterday:

Another participant in this upcoming trip is Ajamu Baraka, who has written
several columns characterizing critics of "anti-imperialist" regimes as
racist.
He repeats the charge in his new column, and takes the widely acknowledged
truth of differential responses to various massacres, and soils the
argument with this:

"And in that sense, while the victims of the violence in Paris may have
been innocent, France was not. French crimes against Arabs, Muslims and
Africans are ever-present in the historical memory and discourse of many
members of those populations living in France. Those memories, the systemic
discrimination experienced by many Muslims and the collaboration of French
authorities with the U.S. and others that gave aid and logistical support
to extremist elements in Syria and turned their backs while their citizens
traveled to Syria to topple President Assad, became the toxic mix that
resulted in the blowback on November 13."

As long as he's race-baiting, I wonder if he has a clue how deeply Arab
victims of Assad (and Qaddafi etc. etc.) resent being told they're
imperialist stooges by Westerners of any race?

Performer: Daniel Kempin
Lyricist: Mordecai Gebirtig
Composer: Mordecai Gebirtig
Original Title: Undzer shtetl brent!

Mordecai Gebirtig, born in 1877 in Krakow, Poland, was a Yiddish folk
poet and songwriter. He wrote "Undzer shtetl brent!" in 1936, following
a pogrom in the Polish town of Przytyk. During the war, the song became
popular in the Krakow ghetto and inspired young people to take up arms
against the Nazis. It was sung in many ghettos and camps, and translated
into Polish and several other languages. Gebirtig was killed in June
1942 during a roundup for deportation from the Krakow ghetto.

Today, "Undzer shtetl brent!" remains one of the most performed
commemorative songs.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LYRICS:
It's burning, brothers! It's burning!
Oh, our poor village, brothers, burns!
Evil winds, full of anger,
Rage and ravage, smash and shatter;
Stronger now that wild flames grow --
All around now burns!
And you stand there looking on
With futile, folded arms
And you stand there looking on --
While our village burns!

This law of 1955, from the time of the colonial war in Algeria, allows a

if the State of Emergency can be extended again by 3 months.

Hollande and Valls want the constitution be changed to curtail sevaral
democratic rights.

BTW, this is the constitution arising from the 1958 coup d'état by General de

In the book Human Smoke, Nicholson Baker details how the US would not even take
in orphaned Jewish children because they might grow up to be Bolsheviks. I have
no doubt that the current crop of politicians and governors who are railing
against Syrian refugees would have said the same thing in the 1930s. Just as
many of them would have been sympathetic to Hitler.

There are three reasons the subordinate role for Arab tribal fighters
undercuts the alliance’s potential. First, the imbalance will undermine
the military capabilities of the coalition to push against the Islamic
State in Arab-dominated areas.

Second, the tribal fighters’ status as junior partners in the alliance
will increasingly reduce their morale — as happened previously, when
many U.S.-trained rebels abandoned the battlefield because they felt the
program was aimless and disproportionally focused on counterterrorism.
Tribal fighters say that U.S. support for the Kurds indicates it is less
committed to tribes in the long term. They fear that nobody would come
to their aid if the Islamic State returned to areas from which it had
previously been expelled, as happened in Iraq over the years or in the
eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor last year, when repeated appeals
for help went unnoticed by the international community.

“Had it not been for the [international] coalition, ISIS would have
reached Qamishli,” said a fighter from the Shammar tribe, which leads
the Kurdish-Arab alliance’s al-Sanadid forces. “And the fact is that
when ISIS wants, it could reach anywhere.”

Finally, there are widespread fears that as more areas are seized by the
Kurdish-led alliance, incidents of ethnic cleansing will increase. Last
month, Amnesty International released a report accusing the YPG of
committing war crimes, including the forced displacement of Arab
civilians and demolition of their houses. “Whenever the YPG enters an
area, they displace its Arab residents,” the Shammari fighter said,
referring to Arab towns in southern Hasakah. “Fifteen villages were
leveled to the ground in Tal Hamees, Tel Brak, and Jazaa.”

Not a diversion at all. Khaled shares the CPP's Stalinist politics.
Meanwhile another friend shared on facebook a photo of a huge anti-APEC
rally in Manila, with BMPS and Sentro banners waving. Those are among the
groups that left the CPP because of its Stalinism - yes, Ferguson, it still
exists and is still a danger. And Khaled's consorting with such backward
forces delays (or at least is a diversion from) building a revolutionary
party in Palestine.

Quite a collection of nut jobs. (Plus at least one serious person, Glen
Ford, who is far too intelligent to still be spouting the
"anti-imperialist" line. His friends in Socialist Action unfortunately just
encourage his political ignorance on this front.)

But notice the threat of legal action at the bottom; since when do movement
coalition names fall under copyright law?
And as for "illegal activities..."

P.S. While many of us are actively organizing in defense of Syrian refugees
- both by organizing for their right to find refuge in a supportive
environment, and by organizing against the multi-imperialist wars which
drove them away - the SSM is SUPPORTING their murder, directly by
supporting Russian et al. aggression and, even more insidiously, indirectly
by claiming they're returning home already thanks to Russia and that
therefore our efforts on their behalf are unnecessary:

http://www.syriasolidaritymovement.org/2015/11/11/over-1-million-syrians-returned-home-since-beginning-of-russian-campaign/

P.P.S.: The SSM (US, not to be confused with the heroic SSM-UK) organized
this statement of support for Assad; guess which of our favorite Stalinist
misleaders signed it? :

Hava a look at those US reactionaries who rail against US support for Israel
because they see that as a obstacle of unlimited dominiation of the world by US
imperialism, trying to get out of the dilemma of riding two horses at the same
time (Alison Weir, Council for the National Interest).

Those enemies of humanity would, on the other hand not allow immigration into
the USA. They never mention the fate of the 908 Jewish refugees on the German

In Counterpunch today, Barry Lando makes a case for giving the Nobel Peace
Prize to Vladimir Putin. Well, he asks, would this be any more absurd than
awarding it to Obama? And he forgot to mention Kissinger. Jesus, who would
write an article like this? What is the point of it? Peace through bombs,
murder, death in large numbers. One disgusting dictator supporting another.
Maybe Assad could agree to resign, and then he could share in the prize.

The Refugees
by Randall Jarrell

In the shabby train no seat is vacant.
The child in the ripped mask
Sprawls undisturbed in the waste
Of the smashed compartment. Is their calm extravagant?
They had faces and lives like you. What was it they possessed
That they were willing to trade for this?
The dried blood sparkles along the mask
Of the child who yesterday possessed
A country welcomer than this.
Did he? All night into the waste
The train moves silently. The faces are vacant.
Have none of them found the cost extravagant?
How could they? They gave what they possessed.
Here all the purses are vacant.
And what else could satisfy the extravagant
Tears and wish of the child but this?
Impose its canceling terrible mask
On the days and faces and lives they waste?
What else are their lives but a journey to the vacant
Satisfaction of death? And the mask
They wear tonight through their waste
Is death's rehearsal. Is it really extravagant
To read in their faces: What is there we possessed
That we were unwilling to trade for this?

Asad’s Officer Ghetto: Why the Syrian Army Remains Loyal
http://www.jadaliyya.com/pages/index/23129/asad%E2%80%99s-officer-ghetto_why-the-syrian-army-remains-

The Syrian army’s officer corps has remained intact despite the immense
pressure of nearly four years of civil and military conflict, a fact that has
prevented the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Asad’s regime. The military
housing system is a crucial aspect of this cohesion: it reveals the world
Syrian officers inhabit, their relations with the regime and wider Syrian
society, and the reasons why so few have defected so far.

I actually think that the idea of a Nobel Peace Prize for Putin makes
perfect sense. It would be consistent with such past winners: Theodore
Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919), George Marshall (1953), Henry
Kissinger (1973), Menachem Begin (1978), Elie Wiesel (1986), Yitzhak
Rabin/Shimon Peres (1994), and especially Barack Obama (2009).

Today at near unanimity the National Assembly of the French Republic voted,
with just 6 deputies saving their honor by voting against, to extend the State
of Emergency according to a law which was passed in 1955 in order to be able to
crack down on the Algerians fighting for their independence, without respect
for democratic rights.

It is all about the right to sip a coffee on a street café, and for that they
have to suspend the basic democratic rights.

The police can break into private homes without getting a search warrant from
a judge before, any kind of public assembly can be prohibited (the
demonstration at the COP21 international climate conference has already been
declared illegal), the press can be gagged by the police, and much more. Just
like the day long assault by special police units with the army on a house in
St. Denis yesterday.

Forget about "liberté, egalité, fraternité" -- the reality is now unbridled
police powers, racism, repression.

France is catched by its past as one of the most barbaric colonial powers.

You can dring coffee anywhere, but better avoid France.

This contribution elaborates on the relevance of the concept of mode of
production in understanding contemporary North American indigenous
populations. While examination of Native American peoples played a
crucial role in early Marxist thought, Marxist theory has never been
popular in examinations of North American Indians and has even been
rejected by many indigenous intellectuals as ethnocentric, colonialist,
and otherwise irrelevant to the political interests of indigenous
peoples. This discussion has two parts: first, I briefly discuss the
history of Marxist engagements with Native American anthropology,
showing how this engagement played a crucial role in the development of
anthropological and Marxist theory. In the second part, I draw from
Elizabeth Rata’s (2000) concept of neotribal capitalism to discuss the
relevance and advantage of mode of production–based analyses to Native
North America.

As their website http://www.syriasolidaritymovement.org/ clearly shows,
the pro-Assad, pro-Hamas, pro-Hezbollah American wing of the Syrian
Solidarity Movement do not spend all their time attacking or threatening
their UK wing. They are also very busy trying to secure donations,
$20,000 this time, to visit their hero, the war criminal Bashar al
Assad. Over 22 of them, male and female, are looking for gullible
sponsors to pay their air fares to Syria to attend a December 5, 2015
meeting of the Arab Women’s Progressive League (AWPL), an obscure bunch
of female Assadist supporters, who seem more than happy to give
Chileans, Australians and Americans free holidays to Assadstan, even
thoigh the $20,000 they are trying to raise would be much better spent
on feeding and clothing Syrian women and children rather than giving
serial freeloaders another freebie.

Although these pompous nonentities are claiming that they and they alone
can establish a “back channel” between “Russia and Iran” on the one hand
and the Western democratic powers on the other, they seem to have missed
the point that these parties are currently meeting in Vienna and, as
they all have a considerable diplomatic corps, that they do not need
paupers like them to establish any lines of communication for them or
between them.

Although many of these 22 freeloaders would be well-known to those who
follow the microbes of the international terror industry, Issa Chaer,
Sami Ramadani and Fr. Dave Smith bear closer scrutiny. Why is an
Australian priest soliciting money to go to Syria on a freebie and why
are two male London professors, with very senior positions in the
pro-Assad Stop the War Movement going to an all-female conference in
Syria, without using the facilities and channels their universities have
for such jaunts?

If the peaceful transition we all wish for Syria is to happen, it will
not be achieved by giving the gadflies of international terrorism free
holidays with Assad. Far from donating to this unworthy cause, readers
should contact the universities that employ Profs Chaer (London South
Bank University) and Ramadani (London Metropolitan University) and ask
them to explain why they are allowing these two reprobates bring such
disrepute upon them.
