*The following was written when Helen Clark stepped down as Labour Party
leader following their defeat in the 2008 general election. Since then
Clark has gone on to a career at the United Nations in New York. Her
latest vanity project is to run for head of the United Nations, a position
for which the National Party government has nominated her. *

*She might have failed in her ambition to be NZ’s first woman prime
minister so she has set her sights on being the first female
secretary-general of the United Nations. In this position she gets to wave
her finger not at the population of one country as when she sat atop NZ
politics, but at the whole world. *

*Imperialism Inc, and repressive leaders around the globe, know she is a
‘safe pair of hands’. The oppressed and exploited of the world will now,
assuming she gets the post, be confronted by oppression in a pants suit
instead of oppression in a pin-stripe suit. *

*Big progress for middle class women, zero progress for the exploited and
oppressed.*

by *Daphna Whitmore*

The end was swift. Stepping down on election night Helen Clark ended 16
years as the Labour Party’s leader and nine years as Prime Minister. As
Labour’s longest serving head, she was one of its most capable and helped
shape the organisation into an urban liberal capitalist party.

[Marxism] NZ Labour Party's endless anti-Chinese racism and the left

Mid-March saw yet another outburst of anti-Chinese racism by the leadership
of the 'Labour' Party. National Party prime minister John Key wittily
retorted, “Last year they wanted to stop people with 'Chinese-sounding
surnames' buying houses in Auckland, now they want to stop them cooking
your chicken chop-suey”, as Labour's latest racist outburst targeted
migrant workers working in 'ethnic' – essentially Asian, especially Chinese
– restaurants.

Indeed, on more and more issues Labour is revealed as being to the right of
National. They're to the right of National on. . .

I'm not sure I'm following the train of thought here. Is the issue that
John Halle endorsed Bernie and then switched, allegedly to please the
people who write for Jacobin? That sounds kind of bizarre. I was not very
close with him during my days at Bard but I remember him being fairly
principled. Then again I don't think we were Facebook friends.

The level of discussion with most of the young and inexperienced supporters
of Bernie Sanders tends to be quite interesting and time spent listening
and talking with them is always productive.

It's the "experienced" and "mature" "theorists" who sound more like people
arguing over their sports teams. One of my favorite habits among them is
to label anyone not supporting Sanders as being "against Bernie." I'm
coming out of this process with entirely deflated respect for many people
who bloody well should know better.

Worse, I have yet to see any real strategic thinking behind it at all,
other than the faith that somehow--in complete opposition to the
candidate's stated purpose--what they're doing will contribute to
reconstituting a serious independent socialist movement. Like getting on a
bus with "Denver" on the front and expecting it to fly you to Havana.

I wish it would be more surprising that--contrary to everything most of
them have been insisting for months--we're hearing the first sounds of
their drumbeat for Hillary, which will accompany rabid denunciations of
everyone who won't vote her as a "social fascist" ally of Trump and "the
Republican War on Women." It's not original at all, but it's what passes
for politics in the U.S. of A.

Btw, this is why I've been saying that "Stalinism" has long been
meaningless in an American context. Absolutely shitty lesser-evil policies
is simply endemic to the American two-party system.

Solidarity!

Is there any analysis in them, or just leaked files?
I ask because clearly we are headed toward a situation akin to that of
2008; i.e. just as then we had to make clear it wasn't primarily a
"financial" crisis, but rather one playing out in the financial sphere
because of longer-term dynamics of capital, so today we will have to combat
conspiracy theories and explain how those same dynamics, and basic class
structures, allowed this admittedly gigantic wave of corruption to flourish.

Louis Proyect says, "I probably should have mentioned that I learned about this
on John Halle's timeline, who endorsed it. Halle was at one time very strong on
the "lesser evil" question. I imagine that there is a lot of social pressure to
adapt to the Democrats this year. If you printed out all the articles
ventilating about Trump, they'd probably reach the planet Mars."
Halle has turned into one of the biggest jackasses on the internet, accusing
anyone, in the most slanderous terms, of being ultra leftists and elitists if
they are not all-in for Bernie Sanders. He so much wants the approval of the
Brooklyn "intellectuals" close to Jacobin that he seems not to be able to help
himself. His saving grace is that his prose is dreadful, and no halfway
intelligent person could bear to read it.

Yes, what a "conspiracy"! It is directed against the British government,
the Russian, the Chinese, the Gulf states, the Syrian, the Argentine
etc. However, one thing is true: Americans seem to be absent. This does
not make the revelations untrue but it might be the case the the US had
some influence to be left out of the investigations. But of course, I am
not in the position to find this out.

The Panama Papers is a global investigation into the sprawling,
secretive industry of offshore that the world’s rich and powerful use to
hide assets and skirt rules by setting up front companies in far-flung
jurisdictions.

Based on a trove of more than 11 million leaked files, the investigation
exposes a cast of characters who use offshore companies to facilitate
bribery, arms deals, tax evasion, financial fraud and drug trafficking.
