fyi:

David Harvey has just begun a new course of lectures on Marx's Capital
Volume I which, on the evidence of the 1st series, we can expect to be
an entertaining, deeply probing and informative project.

Harvey has been teaching this course annually and sometimes even more
frequently at Johns Hopkins and then at CUNY since 1971. His last series
on Capital was delivered in 2007 and since much has changed since he
offers this new series. If anything I know of could make this supposedly
turgid text an acceptably easy read, it's Harvey's commentary. He
describes Capital 1 as a major work of literature, with its abundant
references to the classics including Shakespeare, Balzac, the Greeks,
Romans, Enlightenment figures as well as his contemporaries.

Most importantly, it's become ever more clear in our time that the
capitalist system is increasingly counterproductive and antagonistic to
human welfare. We learn daily how cruel and irrelevant is this means of
subsisting, which confines more of us all the time to the brutal
"informal economy," how inimical it is to the lives of, at the least,
the nearly half of us on the planet, more than 3 billion according to
UNESCO, who still live on less than $2.50 a day, 1/3 in extreme poverty
at less than $1.25 a day, and the 1 billion children who live in
poverty. After all this time, running against the vaunted promise of
"progress." While we here in the so-called "developed" regions consume
at least 1/4 of the globe's resources, energy, GDP, and are the major
contributors, certainly per capita and in terms of skewed net
distribution, to the ruin of the ecology of our planet.

Any reasonable person who has or hasn't given it much thought, plainly
when confronted with these truths, must realize how insane that is and,
if at all human in the sense of "humane", that person will understand
the imperative need to change that system. Not "reform" it, since it's
basic, driving premise and sine qua non is profit on investment, not
human welfare. Human welfare is only served in capitalism within the
confining and diminishing limits of profitability. Change it.

And you don't change squat unless and until you understand it. To read
this text is an essential beginning in that undertaking. So check it out.

It begins here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=526=n5vu4MpYgUo.

This 1st lecture was given on Feb. 7 and the series continues weekly
except for Feb. 14.

This Monthly Review article Louis linked was written by a fine historian, one
not teaching in the higher reaches or academe and one who is ardently a
left-winger--Chad Pearson. Among the liberal historians he criticizes for their
lukewarm or hostile view of left historians and their ideological commitment to
the New Deal, the labor movement (excluding the Reds), and the Democratic Party
is Nancy MacLean, whose book, Democracy in Chains, has been praised to the
skies. It is curious that no one except Chad, has, to my knowledge, pointed out
Maclean's high praise for Brandeis and Oliver Wendell Holmes, despite their
rather checkered past and often ardent support for labor's enemies. The entire
article by Chad is worth a read. MacLean seems to believe that the neoliberal
project, which she associates with economist, James Buchanan, and the Koch
Brothers, ignoring the long, long history of often violently anti-labor
scoundrels on the far right and the complicity of people like Brandeis and
Holmes. Yet to hear MacLean's champions, you would think she is a
died-in-the-wool Marxist. Hasn't democracy always been in chains here? Often
literally, for that matter.

Yesterday evening, the Wikipedia page on Lyndon LaRouche had him as dead for a
while. That was later removed. Looking at the Talk page for that article,
apparently Chip Berlet had made that edit. Other Wikipedia editors removed that
edit on the grounds that news of LaRouche's had not appeared in any reliable
news sources. Chip Berlet insists that word of his death has appeared on a
number of Internet sources connected to the LaRouche network. I suspect that
Berlet, who has been studying LaRouche and his followers for many years has
gotten this right.

I believe they were in the CPUSA in their youth. They were decidedly
middle-of-the-road in their later politics but it doesn't require a very close
reading of their books to pick up on the residues of Marxist analysis in them.

Some of the leading writers and promoters of “rise of the right”
scholarship, including former labor historians, began distancing
themselves from labor history and attacking radical interpretations of
the past around the same time they started producing histories of
conservatism. The cases of Princeton University’s Sean Wilentz and
Georgetown University’s Michael Kazin, two scholars who had established
their careers as labor historians but now identify as political
historians, are instructive. In the 1990s, Wilentz, the author of a book
about New York City’s working class, became a political historian as
well as an enthusiastic supporter and colleague of the Clintons.21 In
the introduction to his 2008 book on Ronald Reagan, Wilentz admitted
that his “views have ripened over time.”22 Kazin, who left his first
major academic mark in 1987 with a study of San Francisco trade unions
in the Progressive Era, has expressed regret about parts of his past.23
“Despite claiming to be hard-headed Marxists,” Kazin wrote in 2013, “our
analysis of American society was more emotional than rational.” Kazin
tells us that he and his comrades were strategically wrongheaded for
referring to the police as “pigs” and for spelling America with three
Ks.24 Kazin has since distanced himself from what he considers an
irrational period tarnished by counter-productive ultraleftism.
Nevertheless, he remains politically active and was partially
responsible for launching Historians for Obama in 2007.

These liberal historians of conservatism have responded to writers to
their left in one of two ways: disregarding them altogether or outright
hostile engagement. While they generally ignore Marxist writers, viewing
their arguments as more of an annoying distraction than as a set of
ideas worth engaging with, some Marxists, including Montgomery, Davis,
and especially Zinn, have made too big of a splash to be overlooked.25
All three, in Kazin’s opinion, overstated the significance of class in
U.S. history. Zinn, given his popular reach, deserved special scorn from
these formerly class-conscious scholars. After Zinn’s 2010 death,
Wilentz faulted him for writing for a broad audience: “he’s a
popularizer, and his view of history is topsy-turvy, turning old
villains into heroes, and after a while the glow gets unreal.”26 In
2004, Kazin wrote the first of several articles and speeches criticizing
A People’s History of the United States, calling it “simplistic” and
“bad history” because Zinn, in Kazin’s view, exaggerated the power of
elites without recognizing “the real choices our left ancestors faced
and the true pathos, and drama, of their decisions.”27

Subject: [Marxism] Comment on Bricmont and Johnstone on AIPAC
To:
List members might be interested in Moshé Machover's comments on
Jean Bricmont and Diana Johnstone's latest, 'The People Against the 800
Pound Gorilla' <
http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/09/13/the-people-against-the-800-pound-gorilla/
>.

Their basic thesis is that AIPAC determines US policy in the Middle East
against real US interests. This is the same "tail wags dog" thesis argued
by Mearsheimer and Walt -- except that the latter are more sophisticated,
and stress that the Israel lobby is much wider that AIPAC and includes many
more Christians than Jews. They also don't belong to the left, but are
bourgeois political "scientists".

According to this thesis Israel is the most powerful state in the entire
world, as it can compel even the US to do its bidding, willy-nilly!

The flaw in this thesis is: why do the decision-making political elite and
dominant big-business interests in the US allow this alleged manipulation
of US foreign policy if it is really so much against their interests. If
big business -- the MIC, oil companies etc -- were really against this,
they could surely muster enough resources to counter AIPAC. To defend
themselves against the charge of antisemitism, they could easily find
enough Jews to help refute this charge.

The answer is that Israel is really an important strategic asset for the US.

Bricmont and Johnstone consider and refute various alternative explanations
as to why the US seems to do what is in Israel's but not US interest. But
they omit to mention the two most evident points.

1. Israel, possessing by far the strongest military force in the region, is
also the most deeply committed to US dominance in the Middle East. Unlike
other ME states, its commitment to the US is independent of which party is
in office, and is not threatened in the foreseeable future by a popular
anti-US internal opposition. It is therefore most reliable as US regional
Rottweiler. No other ME state is in anything like this position.

2. Specifically, in the case of Iran (and hence its allies Syria and
Hizbullah), what B fail to consider is the Mafia principle: in order to
maintain credibility, any display of disobedience and insufficient
compliance must be severely punished and made an example of. So, with
respect to Iran the strategic interests of Israel and US imperialism
coincide. Israel jealously guards its regional hegemony (as main junior
partner of the US), and is committed to prevent any regional state becoming
a credible rival. The US is interested to preserve its credibility as the
the dominant power, and punish any disobedience.

Note, that it was the credibility issue that Obama stressed in his last
speech before he climbed down.

The role of AIPAC and the (much wider) Israel lobby is however very
important: it is to silence dissent and prevent challenge in the press and
Congress to US policy that is in the interest of the dominant part of the
US ruling class, but would otherwise be quite unpopular.

LEANING OVER HER IRON Sherry looks almost lost in the cavernous space of
Mill Store, the discount T-shirt shop she manages in Florence, Alabama.
While women browse the racks, Sherry shuttles between the front and back
rooms, restocking the floor and finishing a custom order. Saturdays are
busy, and the customized T-shirts she’s working on have become very
popular, but Sherry likes it that way. She loves this job and hopes
business stays good. Before she sold shirts, Sherry sewed them.
Thousands of people in Florence did. The shop is actually housed in the
former Tee Jays factory, once the largest privately owned T-shirt
manufacturer in the US. After a series of layoffs beginning in the
1990s, workers showed up one morning in 2005 to locked doors and a
CLOSED sign. Women like Sherry scattered to a series of short-term jobs.
She answered phones in a local shop, studied to become a hairdresser,
started a pool-lining-recycling business, and even came back to sewing
at a small manufacturer for a while. Then she lucked into Mill Store.
“It’s a good job,” she says, looking around at her empire of cotton, all
imported from Central America.

(James Carroll is a former Catholic priest and like Christ Hedges, an
ordained minister, is well equipped to write about apocalyptic matters.)

Last month, the National Nuclear Security Administration (formerly the
Atomic Energy Commission) announced that the first of a new generation
of strategic nuclear weapons had rolled off the assembly line at its
Pantex nuclear weapons plant in the panhandle of Texas. That warhead,
the W76-2, is designed to be fitted to a submarine-launched Trident
missile, a weapon with a range of more than 7,500 miles. By September,
an undisclosed number of warheads will be delivered to the Navy for
deployment.

What makes this particular nuke new is the fact that it carries a far
smaller destructive payload than the thermonuclear monsters the Trident
has been hosting for decades -- not the equivalent of about 100 kilotons
of TNT as previously, but of five kilotons. According to Stephen Young
of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the W76-2 will yield “only” about
one-third of the devastating power of the weapon that the Enola Gay, an
American B-29 bomber, dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Yet that
very shrinkage of the power to devastate is precisely what makes this
nuclear weapon potentially the most dangerous ever manufactured.
Fulfilling the Trump administration’s quest for nuclear-war-fighting
“flexibility,” it isn’t designed as a deterrent against another country
launching its nukes; it’s designed to be used. This is the weapon that
could make the previously “unthinkable” thinkable.

Many thanks to our comradely internet platform Masina in Serbia for
permitting us to republish this interview.

Six years ago a wave of demonstrations broke out throughout Spain. What
started as a protest against the widespread political corruption and the
lack of “real” democracy soon spread to millions of people challenging
the current political and economic order. This movement will have later
come to be known as the Indignados, or the 15M movement. The main three
slogans of the May 15, that were supported by almost 80% of the
population, were: “You call it a democracy – but it’s not”, “It’s not a
crisis, it’s a scam”, “We are not merchandise in the hands of the
politicians and the bankers.”
