Under consideration are two films made by NYU film school graduates that
are flawed but worth seeing. Opening at the IFC in NY and the Laemmle on
May 31st, “Yomeddine” (Arabic for Judgement Day) is an Egyptian road
movie made by Abu Shawky about the quest of Besha, a 40 year-old garbage
dump recycler who lives in a leper colony, to find the father who
abandoned him when he was 10 years old. Besha is played by Rady Gamal, a
severely disfigured, non-professional leprosy survivor. Opening tomorrow
at the Film Forum in NY, “The Third Wife” was made by Ash Mayfair, who,
despite her name, grew up in Vietnam. It is based on the story of the
arranged marriage of both her grandmother and great-grandmother and
specifically the great-grandmother’s experience in a polygamous marriage
in 19th century Vietnam.

Tarrant's text looks forward, to the Balkanisation of multi-racial
America, and the violent creation of a pigmentopia. He dreams of a
united Europe waging a new crusade against Islam. But the terrorist also
gazes backward, toward a nineteenth century Australasia where white
settlers justified their presence and power in unashamedly racial
language. This history is real. It was, and is, ours.

*American Gandhi: A.J. Muste and the History of Radicalism in the
Twentieth Century*by Leilah Danielson (Philadelphia: University of
Pennsylvania Press)

///Reviewed by Staughton Lynd and Andy Piascik/

*
*A Question*
_American Gandhi: A.J. Muste and the History of Radicalism in the
Twentieth Century_//is the most comprehensive and thoroughly-researched
account of the life of A.J. Muste yet to appear. It is particularly
valuable in its treatment of the years that Muste devoted to building a
radical labor movement, 1919 to 1936.This review limits itself to that
period of Muste’s life.
Muste’s decision in August 1936 to give up labor advocacy and (as he put
it) “return to pacifism” is puzzling.During the 1920’s and early 1930’s
Muste had dedicated himself to the creation of industrial unionism, with
the ultimate goal of a transition to socialism. And at first glance it
might seem that he and his colleagues were on a pathway to success. In
1934 there had been successful general strikes in Minneapolis, San
Francisco, and Toledo; Musteites, as they were called, provided
leadership in Toledo. The tragic outcome of labor protest in Marion and
Gastonia, North Carolina that the Musteites were also deeply immersed in
nonetheless proved prelude to a nationwide strike of textile workers. In
1935 Congress passed the National Labor Relations Act (the Wagner Act),
providing an administrative framework for the adoption of collective
bargaining. Sit-ins, beginning in the Akron rubber plants and later in
the automobile assembly complex of Flint, Michigan, were proving that
rank-and-file direct action was capable of confronting the largest
private corporations.
**So why, at this historical moment, did Muste conclude that his
lifelong vision of what today we call “un otro mundo,” another world,
directed him to turn his attention away from the emerging Congress of
Industrial Organizations to entities such as the American Friends
Service Committee and the Fellowship of Reconciliation?

*Background*
**Abraham Johannes Muste was born in the Netherlands. His family
emigrated to the United States in 1891 and settled in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. It was a working-class city in which the major industry was
making furniture.Muste worked in furniture factories during summer as a
teenager.
**A college education at nearby Hope College led to graduate study for
the Dutch Reformed ministry and, by the time of World War I, a pastorate
in a Congregational church.By 1916 Muste had become a pacifist.In
December 1917, under pressure because of his new views, he resigned.
Early in 1919, Muste and his wife Anne were living near Boston as part
of a small, informal group called the Comradeship. In his unfinished
autobiography, Muste recalls how he and another of the comrades rose at
five, bundled themselves in their overcoats against the cold, and read
the New Testament together.
Muste’s life changed dramatically when he did support work for striking
textile workers in nearby Lawrence, Massachusetts. The Industrial
Workers of the World (IWW) had led the famous Bread and Roses Strike in
Lawrence in 1912 but by 1919, the local chapter had largely been
suppressed out of existence.
Muste and others from the Comradeship quickly gained the trust of the
workers and became leaders of the strike.Among a work force made up of
many nationalities who spoke a variety of languages, the ability to
speak and write English was apparently a precious gift.In scope, length
and in its ultimate victory, the 1919 strike was every bit as important
as the famous 1912 strike. Along the way, Muste was one of many beaten
and jailed.
After the strike, Muste’s commitment to the working class deepened. He
dedicated himself to building a radical labor movement and to developing
an organic American revolutionary movement. It is to this period of
Muste’s life that Danielson adds much rich detail.
Muste spent two years as head of a new union formed in the last days of
the 1919 Lawrence strike, the Amalgamated Textile Workers of America
(ATWA). Though Danielson points out the emphasis the ATWA put on being
responsible, in contrast

It is capitalism’s global effort to take our attention away from the
impending environmental annihilation caused by capitalism. That we see
the global rise of nationalistic populism right now is a sure sign of
the seriousness of what capital has understood is coming. The inevitable
conclusion is nationalistic populism will continue to grow. And it will
increase in ferocity. It may even end in a similar way to the first
wave, outright Fascism. Given the recent history of capitalism, one
should never totally discount such a possibility. This is not to argue
that 2019 is 1933. It is not. What is coming will be worse. The looming
fight will be worse and even if we win, the outcome will be horrendous.

(Long but immensely amusing in a very dark way about the extinction of
English departments and by implication the humanities in general.)

Chronicle of Higher Education, May 10, 2019
Academe's Extinction Event Failure, Whiskey, and Professional Collapse
at the MLA

By ANDREW KAY

Chicago

All at once it hit me: a shudder. I’d been doing fine all day — merrily,
even. Fresh off the bus to downtown Chicago, eased by a steady titration
since breakfast of Maker’s Mark, I’d fairly danced down Wacker Drive,
rolling suitcase in tow. I had this. It was brazen and ballsy, what I
was doing, and I was to be commended for it. But then I got to the Hyatt
Regency, and the automatic doors at front opened before me like a sort
of maw, and I ventured in. In an instant it failed me — my Stuart
Smalley self-talk, my diligent pregaming on bourbon — and I stood there
in the lobby effectively naked, a gibbering infant exposed to the light.

I was back: I was at MLA (short for “Modern Language Association”), the
annual pageant for literary studies, my old vocation. Here scholars
gather every January, performing the time-honored rite of solemnly
chanting 20-minute papers before one another in hotel conference rooms.
And here, until recently, the field held interviews for its
ever-dwindling pool of tenure-track professorships. They’ve largely
switched to Skype now.

I went to four of these conferences on my own dime from 2013 to 2016,
interviewing fruitlessly. Along the way I developed an anxiety problem
and several exotic tics — my blinking got sort of messed up; I started
baking compulsively. At last I left, publishing an essay that likened
the academic job market to Tinder, but somehow more depraved. It felt
like walking out of a place and tossing a Molotov cocktail over my
shoulder.

Academe, as anyone knows who’s tried to leave it, is like a partner who
is wrenchingly hard to quit. When it was good, it was amazing. God, the
highs! The horizon of your happiness seemed unbounded. But the partner
turned out to be a nut job who demanded nothing less than all of you.
Move to a different city every year, they stipulated. Subsist on bread
crumbs. Completely debase yourself. They constantly evaluated your
“performance.” On a whim, they dressed you up in a sailor suit and beat you.

It was finally too much to bear. I got out to save myself, starting life
anew as an essayist and journalist. And I landed a part-time job at a
private company, teaching writing to students with disabilities. I could
hardly believe my good fortune in escaping.

Academe, as anyone knows who’s tried to leave it, is like a partner who
is wrenchingly hard to quit.
The touch of an ex-lover, though, is not so easily forgotten. Swimming
happily along in your new life, you are swept back by an undertow of
remembered joy that draws you to its source. At work in the evenings,
standing at a whiteboard desk and helping a student with a paper, I
found myself scrawling lines of Blake onto the desk’s surface with a
marker, dreamy and distracted. “Sooner murder an infant in its cradle
than nurse unacted desires,” went one. The line gleamed like a talisman
from another world.

But then a Chronicle editor reached out, asking whether I had any ideas
for stories, and I said innocently, “I had sort of a funny thought that
I might cover MLA 2019.” It was as if I’d held onto academe’s number in
spite of myself.

My stated reasons for going were the ones everyone gives for
reconnecting with an old flame: I craved closure. I felt a desire to be
vindicated in my decision to break things off, and with it a morbid
curiosity about what the profession had been up to since I left it. But
perhaps this was all so much gauzy self-deception, a heap of
self-flattering fictions beneath which lurked the real, unvarnished
motive behind most such meetings: I was parched, and I missed it.

How can I conjure MLA 2019 for you?

Have you ever seen that viral picture from 2017 of a party of Oregon
golfers calmly putting while, in the near distance, a wildfire consumes
the landscape? Trees blacken; smoke, pinkish-gray, shrouds everything in
impasto blots; nature itself seems to creak, groan, and at last give
way. But the golfers go blithely on. The conversion of this Edenic place
into Dantean incandescence won’t interfere with the genteel game they
know and love — or, if it will, they are determined to get in one last
round before the region is razed. “Eye on the ball, Chet!” one can hear
them saying. “Not on the cataclysm!”

Thus MLA 2019. In conference rooms located in the depths of the hotel,
the field’s most vigorous

The gini coefficient (the basic measure of inequality) for incomes is
now at its highest ever in the US, at a record breaking 0.48 up from
0.38 in the late 1960s – a rise of 30% (see graph above).

Brainard suggested that so bad is this development that reasonable
living standards for most Americans will never return. “In recent
years, households at the middle of the income distribution have faced a
number of challenges,’’ Brainard said. “That raises the question of
whether middle-class living standards are within reach for middle-income
Americans in today’s economy.’’
