This is addressed to academics, both current and retired, who are on this list, whether you are in the US or not. We are trying to get Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York to grant clemency to David Gilbert. David was sentenced to life imprisonment for participating in the robbery of a Brinks truck in New York in 1981. At the time, David was a member of a radical Black group and was formerly a member of Weather Underground. During his incarceration, he has been a model prisoner, mentoring younger men and initiating AIDs education groups. Today, he is a much different person than he was then. He is absolutely unlikely to commit a crime if he is released. He is in poor health and will likely die if he is struck by the Covid-19 virus. Professor Barbara Ransby at the University of Illinois at Chicago has written an eloquent letter on behalf of academics urging Governor Cuomo to grant David clemency. I ask that you consider signing on the Barbara's letter, and if you do, asking some other like-minded academics to sign also. The link to the letter is below.
