From a union worker, explaining how “right to work” results in
incompetent workmanship
Now I certainly agree with all of the political points made here and in
Lou's blog and I certainly have no expertise on bridges, but it seems
that:
So after the concrete is poured the cables are pulled
tight. So these Idiots waited till the concrete was rock hard. When
they pulled the cables
Well it seems the accident did involve overtensioning a rod (not cable,
but that's not important). However my understanding is that the concrete
had been poured long ago and then the bridge section brought there. But
indeed those tensioning rods which help hold the concrete together do
need to be retensioned especially after the whole thing is moved (as
they were doing). So this carpenter (not expert in concrete per se)
appears to have a few facts wrong (but he's right about the union!).
Disclosure: everything I know about bridges I just learnt on wikipedia:

The cables should been tightened before the rock turned hard but when
the concrete was wet right after it was poured. I have worked in
Florida, the companies hire anyone to work construction . The super
down to the laborer. Unskilled people doing skilled labor. This is a
right to work state.
Union Busting. Florida is a right to work state. No training. Crane
