The controversial Sivens dam project in south-west France has been
temporarily suspended after the death of 21-year-old activist Remi Fraisse
while protesting at the site on October 25.

An autopsy found that Fraisse had likely died from a police stun grenade
that hit him in the back.

By *Irvin Jim*,**National Union of Metaworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)
general secretary

November 9, 2014 -- /Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal/
-- Below are the speaking notes Jim's presentation to the Congress of
South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Central Executive Committee meeting
to discuss the union's expelsion from the federation, on November 7,
2014. After meeting through the night, delegates voted 33-24 in favour
of expelling NUMSA, South Africa's biggest trade union, the largest
union in the federation and a vocal critic of President Jacob Zuma's
neoliberal regime.

* * *

Comrades,

I stand here as the General Secretary of the biggest affiliate of this
federation, as a founding member at the Congress of 1985. I will be
reminding comrades here of our common history.

I stand here because the Central Executive Committee of this federation
has offered Numsa an opportunity to explain to you why we should not be
expelled or suspended from this organisation. I am going to fulfil that
task thoroughly. I will explain in great detail exactly why Numsa should
not be expelled or suspended and why, instead, this federation should
obey its own constitution and allow workers, as owners of the
federation, to decide on its future.

Here’s a link to an excellent background piece on how “the Democratic elites
ensconced in the law firms, foundations, banks, and media executive suites”
moved to dismantle the social and regulatory reforms of the New Deal and
previous Democratic Party administrations under the tutelage of a consummate
insider, Al From.

Like so many accounts of political change, however, Stoller's review of From's
memoir attributes too much to the role of individuals without taking into
account that construction of the new ideological framework and party structures
- not only within the DP but also in European social democratic parties - was
mostly owing to the decades-long decline in the economic weight and political
influence of the trade unions resulting from globalization, tech change, and
other factors.

The greatly altered balance of forces between capital and labour was inevitably
reflected at the political level in these left-centre parties in the emergence
of the Clintons, Blairs, Schroders, and Hollandes and their full abandonment of
a shrinking trade union base in favour of an increasingly dominant professional
and corporate wing out of whose ranks they emerged.

Manifestoon[edit]
One of Drew's best known works is Manifestoon, a collage of classic cartoons
edited to help illustrate the narration: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels'
Communist Manifesto. When the clips are re-contextualized, the subversive
nature of the trickster character in classic cartoons is presented in a new
perspective.[4]
The video has been shown at large institutions such as Yerba Buena Center for
the Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and Barcelona Cultural Center
and uploaded to web sites like theInternet archive[5] and YouTube.[6]
Nicole Brenez, the curator of Cinematheque in France listed Manifestoon as one
of the top ten films of the 1990s. [7]

In “Normality and Progress in Cuba” (Havana Times, October 30, 2014)
Fernando Ravsberg reports on the Cuban television program Circulo de la
Confianza (“Circle of Trust”) that he and others discussed the idea of
progress and how it applies to Cuba.

Mr. Ravsberg correctly argues that progress in Cuba should be compared
not with the achievements of the industrial capitalist societies but
with the conditions of the periphery of world economy, in particular
countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. Although I have used
Ravsberg’s argument in my classes, academic conferences and political
gathering dealing with the Cuban revolution for the past 25 years I
think it is high time to reconsider the idea of progress itself.

The idea of progress

The contemporary concept of progress originated with the Enlightment
(Robert Nisbet, History of the Idea of Progress,1969). It is associated
with advances in social organization and attending progress in science
and technology that are assumed to improve the human condition by
enhancing quality of life. What has happened historically is more
complicated.

The rise of the capitalist mode of production represented a revolution
in social organization of Western Europe. The emerging capitalist system
benefited from the Scientific Revolution (1550-1700) and technological
development that increased productivity in agriculture and laid the
basis for the Industrial Revolution (1760-1830). A number of bourgeois
revolutions, in particular in France and in United States, paved the way
for historically unprecedented social progress.

However, the process of original accumulation of capital marginalized
the peasantry and subsequent capitalist industrialization
super-exploited the new proletarians. The rise of capitalism in Western
Europe also relied on plunder of far away lands, including the slave
trade, and the new democratic republic in Western Europe and North
America became colonial and imperialist powers that undermined progress
in the periphery to facilitate their expatiation. Thus, the promise of
progress was only partially realized by the working people of the
capitalist center and largely unrealized by the masses in the periphery.

These are certainly significant changes and it's no accident that these
reflect international trends, but I'm not sure how they greatly altered
balance of forces between capital and labour.

In the case of the U.S., the political parties basically obtain legitimacy
for ruling class interests by recasting them into something that enough
participating voters can buy or, at least, buy in preference to what seems
to them to be a worse alternative.

It might be argued, perhaps, that the stronger labor movement we used to
have in this country meant that Democratic party's need to mediate
constituted a brake of sorts on how blatantly it pursued a capitalist
agenda. But it always pursued that agenda. Perhaps it would be more
accurate to say that the changing balance of forces between capital and
labour contributed to these political party shifts, no?

Solidarity!
