Re: [MCN-L] Data-driven museum maps?

2015-07-23 Thread Glen Barnes
I do a bit of work on OSM in New Zealand but haven't yet done anything for
indoors. I'm not sure OSM is really the right tool for the job although
there have been several attempts -
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Indoor_Mapping#Projects

Since I last checked the IndoorGML spec has been published which looks
interesting - http://indoorgml.net.

In terms of delivery of maps MapBox seem to be the only ones doing
interesting open source stuff and storage in MBTiles seems like the way to
go.

I would be interested to see where you get with your project. Feel free to
ping me offline.

Thanks

Question: Any museums out there using Open Street Map or another
data-driven model for gallery maps? If so, let's collaborate - on process,
 delivery mechanisms, update methods, etc.

Re: [MCN-L] Data-driven museum maps?

2015-07-20 Thread Undeen, Don
Hey Douglas,

We developed an algorithm in the MediaLab for routing through multiple
waypoints, finding the ideal path while respecting a user's preference for
avoiding stairs, dark rooms, etc.

It's not the total wayfinding solution, but can be a useful component.
Personally I've always wanted to investigate openStreetMaps for indoors.

code on github is here: https://github.com/metmuseum-medialab/pathfinder

But happy to go over the details of it if you find it useful.

Re: [MCN-L] Data-driven museum maps?

2015-07-20 Thread Liz Neely
Hi Douglas,

We explored this at the Art Institute in 2009 and found the issue with
mapping overlays on Google or Open Street Map is that levels in buildings
were yet routable.

At the time we worked with Maps Alive (http://www.mapsalive.com/) (and a
the design firm Slate Roof Studio) who have done a lot of campus mapping.
The Art Institute's Pathfinder was data driven in that it refreshed to the
collection management system data nightly to account for art movement,
designation of featured objects and object metadata -- therefore always
leading a visitor to a gallery where that artwork actually existed with the
proper information. Then the Maps Alive software would construct a series
of legs from the start point to the destination, accounting for preferences
such as an accessible path, etc.

2009 was a long time ago -- and the institution since moved on to Meridian
a few years ago for its route construction (and perhaps on to something
else that I'm not aware of since my time!)

Nevertheless, George at Maps Alive is full of ideas and aways happy to
share -- a conversation with him may be one data point from a
programmer/business owner in the institution mapping field.

Thanks,
Liz
