Re: [MCN-L] High efficiency scanners

2015-03-02 Thread Berg-Fulton, Tracey
Who only knows how much this cost to get/operate...but the Smithsonian is
digitizing their historic currency collection, and it is basically a
digitization conveyor belt. Here's a Vine: https://vine.co/v/OhhxK615gt6
And a YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou0Xet2kpqA#t=11

As someone whose first museum job was photographing the collection with a
digital scanning back that took 4 or 5 minutes per fussy exposure...this looks
like heaven.

Cheers,
Tracey

I'm not sure what you have to scan but have you looked at what the Internet
Archive offers? 10 cents a page. https://archive.org/scanning

Brewster Kahle gave a talk at NDF last year and I was very impressed with their
setup. They will be bringing out a DIY $10K scanner this year which looks like
a great option for cheapish, high volume scanning.

Re: [MCN-L] High efficiency scanners

2015-02-27 Thread Thomas Goskar
What sort of materials do you wish to scan, in what order of magnitude? Also it
would depend on whether the scans need to be archival grade digital surrogates.

Assuming that it's thousands of A4 pages you may find something in the Fujitsu
ScanSnap range.

If I'm doubt, consult a conservator first before doing anything.

All the best,

Tom

Are you looking to bring this operations in-house, or just use a service
to do the scanning? Do you want to store the documents in a document
management system?
