[MCN-L] Suggestions for Web Analytics software besides Google Analytics

2010-04-15 Thread Glen Barnes

Hi Bilkis,

You can track the downloads pretty easily using the _trackEvent tag [1]:

_trackEvent(category, action, optional_label, optional_value)

The key here is not to manually add this to _every_ link you want to track. I
can't find the exact page[2] that you want to access now but basically on page
load you have a default piece of javascript that adds the correct Javascript to
each anchor tag. Here[3] is a script that does it using the old method of
generating 'fake' page views (the new way of using event tracking is the
recommended way).

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Glen Barnes

 Hi everyone,

We use WebTrends and Google Analytics (GA) for analysing our web
statistics at Museum of London. However, WebTrends has become
increasingly very expensive for us and we want to move away from it to a
new, preferably free, package and would appreciate all your
recommendations. I am aware of some of the software out there that has
been mentioned in previous emails, but I would like a recommendation of
one that you think is really good.

A couple of things that the software should do that GA doesn't:

 * Allow reanalysis of web log files
 * Allow analysis of visits to downloads

Any other comments or suggestions are welcome.

 Thanks.
 Bilkis.

[MCN-L] Suggestions for Web Analytics software besides Google Analytics

2010-04-14 Thread sheila.ca...@pch.gc.ca
Hi -- this question is timely, although I can't help with an answer! As
Chair of the Metrics and Evaluation SIG, I had been planning a survey on
what Web stats people are collecting and for what purposes. I was
thinking it might be interesting to include questions on what metrics
people are collecting on their social media. It seems that perhaps it
might be appropriate to focus on tools people are using, both for Web
Analytics and external social media metrics.

In order not to make an unwieldy survey, I can focus the questions in
whatever way people think would be most of interest. I'd also love to
hear from anyone who might be interested in helping out! If someone
already knows of a place some of this information is already collected,
that would be helpful to know.

[MCN-L] Suggestions for Web Analytics software besides Google Analytics

2010-04-14 Thread Morgan, Matt
For your first bullet point, I always feel like the hard part is storing the
log files and knowing when it's worth going back to them later. Once you have
that sorted out, you have a lot of options (probably to back up GA, not on
their own--but it sounds like that's how you use WT so this wouldn't be any
different). All of these are free/open source and really easy to figure out and
automate:

http://www.analog.cx/
http://awstats.sourceforge.net/
http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/

I've used all three and find them substantially similar, although there are
probably differences in the details (I've never tried to compare them directly).

I don't really understand what you mean in the second bullet point.

Good luck,
Matt
