[MeeGo-dev] Fastest to install uboot-pr13_1.0.1_armel.deb on N900 for pre-works of experiencing MeeGo 1.1

2010-11-10 Thread Anthony Lee
Hi experts of N900

I want to try dual boot on N900 to experience MeeGo 1.1 codedrop by
uboot-pr13. And I already upgrade the N900 device with
RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin.

Now it's time to install uboot-pr13 on Maemo's root-fs.

I downloaded it directly at my Ubuntu desktop. And is it any easier way to
bring it into the N900 system and then do some dpkg installation via X
terminal? I tried to format a microSD as a (ext3, ext3, vfat) fs but it
cannot be recognized by file-manager and cannot be seen on /dev/mmcblkp*?
and manually mount it!? With another rootsh feature!?

Do you know any simple clues on this subject? Thanks in advance.

(I read the MeeGo Wiki but cannot figure out how to

1. Enable the maemo.org extras-devel repository.

2. Install the 'uboot-pr13' package from 'System' section

P.S. I am not a Maemo developer, nor a MeeGo developer. So I have no idea
about what the extra-devel repo is here. Is that a way to do apt-get install
uboot-pr13 like that!?

Anthony

You might want to try a more specific question.

Are you talking about contributing code to the MeeGo distribution?
http://meego.com/about/contribution-guidelines

Or are you looking for application developer documentation?
http://meego.com/developers

If your question is about developing applications for MeeGo, you
should post a more specific question in our application developer

[MeeGo-dev] Proposal for unconference session: Hardware adaptations in MeeGo

2010-11-10 Thread Carsten Munk
I've just added a proposal for an unconference session at the MeeGo
Conference in Dublin regarding hardware adaptations in MeeGo and the
requirements, architecture, compliance etc. process around them.

You can see the proposal at
http://wiki.meego.com/MeeGo_Conference_2010/Unconference/Hardware_adaptations_in_MeeGo
- If you'd like to see this one happen - show up and show interest in
the morning of the unconference day for it. And show up for the
session :)

Intents and purposes:

I'd like to get together with like-minded individuals and discuss
Hardware Adaptations within MeeGo. The topics that can be discussed
within the 45 minute slot would be:

* Walk-through of the architecture side of HW adaptations:
adaptation subsystems

* The requirements process for hardware adaptation and
representing this in the MeeGo featurezilla.

* Expectations from hardware adaptations of the MeeGo Core OS.

* Compliance testing of HW adaptations.

* How we can make making hardware adaptations for MeeGo easier.

If you're from a hardware vendor, from Program Office or just
generally working on something related to a current or future hardware
adaptation for MeeGo, this is the place for you.

Are you saying you want to lock all UI's into a specific mode,
regardless of what the orientation sensors are reporting, and regardless
of what the specific app wants to do?

If so then you could always limit available orientations via the target
configuration file located in /usr/share/meegotouch/targets/. You stack
will have one a specific target set via a gconf key (or which i don't
recall the path off the top of my head), and then libmeegotouch will use
that config to load the config from /usr/share/meegotouch/TARGET.conf.
Inside that file you will see a section called [allowedOrientations]
with a list of valid angles for keyboardOpen and keyboardClosed.

You could (seems a bit hacky, but for what ever purpose you are trying
to achieve this you could) just limit the number of valid angles to 0 and 0.

[MeeGo-dev] MeeGo 1.1 SDK beta released

2010-11-10 Thread Spencer, Bob
The MeeGo SDK program team is pleased to announce the release of the MeeGo 1.1.
SDK today.

Details in the blog post:
http://meego.com/community/blogs/veli/2010/meego-1.1-sdk-beta-release and links
from that post.

We are positioning it as a Beta release because we would like to get more
supported host systems before we consider it fully Released

A few notes: ( aka *what's in 1.1* )
 1) Qt Creator with QEMU emulation. Delivering a nice development experience
for Qt and Qt Quick/QML on your host workstation without requiring a device
 2) MeeGo API documentation cleaned up and available:
http://apidocs.meego.com/1.1/core/
2b) We also publish documentation for Platform APIs
(http://apidocs.meego.com/1.1/platform/ )
 3) Some good tutorials for getting started:
http://wiki.meego.com/SDK/Docs/1.1/Getting_started_with_the_MeeGo_SDK_for_Linux
 4) Installation is straight-forward now but could be improved and simplified.
This is WIP
 5) Host support is limited due to many misc, mostly-minor bugs and resource
constraints. But we hope to add new host support as listed on the bottom of
the release page (http://meego.com/downloads/releases/1.1/meego-v1.1-sdk )

 It enables the envvar M_USE_SHOW_CURSOR.
Should this go to: meego-touch-...@lists.meego.com ?

The meegotouch developers already know about this patch.

Without the patch the cursor can be shown by editing the desktop entries
for apps in /usr/share/applications/ and replacing
Exec=$APP with Exec=$APP -show-cursor.

Thanks,
Silesh.

Just in case you don't want rebuild the whole FS, just do this inside your
meego shell prompt (as root):

#cd /usr/share/applications
#for filename in `ls *.desktop`; do sed -i 's/\(^Exec=\)\(.*\)/\1\2
-show-cursor/' $filename; done

once you run that command -show-cursor will be added to all the desktop apps ;)

Would it be possible for us to be a bit more specific about the
default/supported set?

The set of codecs that require licensing contracts certainly vary from
country to country. To be correct, I shouldn't say require a license
or require a contract, but more something relative to the likelihood
of getting sued, as nobody can ever really get a bulletproof license
to a particular codec, given the number of software patents that could
read on the codec.

In that vein, I know that representatives of the MPEG-LA have made
vague threats against both Ogg Theora and WebM, however I hope that
given the shared goals between MeeGo and other FOSS projects, Theora,
Vorbis, VP8, and the Ogg and Matroska containers will all be supported
by MeeGo right out of the box.

I think it could be very helpful to have a wiki page listing supported
codecs (and perhaps other supported formats, e.g. image formats) for
Meego. I think we're going to hear this question come up often!

Well, the Documents exists in Meego, but what should be added in
 the
list of shown target paths for av capture. Videos at least, I
 assume,
but Music or else ? Now that we have Q_WS_MEEGO, we could use it to
add more specific paths here, right ?

Right, and if the default audio video and photo capture directories are
defined for MeeGo, I'd be interested to add them to QtMobility
 multimedia
 backends.

There not necessarily capture directories but
QDesktopServices::storageLocation() will give you the path of the default Movie
and Pictures directories.

Are you saying you want to lock all UI's into a specific mode, regardless
of what the orientation sensors are reporting, and regardless of what the
 specific app wants to do?

If so then you could always limit available orientations via the target
configuration file located in /usr/share/meegotouch/targets/. You stack
will have one a specific target set via a gconf key (or which i don't recall
the path off the top of my head), and then libmeegotouch will use that
config to load the config from /usr/share/meegotouch/TARGET.conf. Inside
that file you will see a section called [allowedOrientations] with a list
of valid angles for keyboardOpen and keyboardClosed.

You could (seems a bit hacky, but for what ever purpose you are trying to
achieve this you could) just limit the number of valid angles to 0 and 0.

I hope the console ouput behavior is modified by config instead of
   recompiling kernel.

It depends on what you are seeng.

Better have a document for customizing startup shutdown process.
  Currently
it has too many screen switch, some warning / error message was not
  removed
and there is still a visible cursor.

Startup and shutdown experience should make the end user think it's a
  device
   not a PC.

It looks that way on my machines :)

You should see a visible cursor even it's not blink. Finally I found a
 kernel option to disable it,
Too much screen switch during boot process if you compare it to how MacOS
 boots.

Huh? You should see no screen switches, once the bios is through. And
it's _way_ faster booting than MacOS is as well.

Use QDesktopServices::storageLocation.

Q_WS_MEEGO doesn't exist. It's only Q_WS_X11.
