Mersenne: christmas computer system?

2002-11-24 Thread Russel Brooks
I'm giving my brother's family a new computer for christmas.
He'll buy it from a local (to him) 'white box' pc store and I'll
pay for it. I am a little concerned about performance because
the pc will probably be running GIMPS and I'd like to get my
money's worth. It's easy to request a P4 in the 2.0-2.5 range
and 256M-512M of memory but I've read of the bottleneck caused
by slow memory and the bus between memory and cpu and I don't
know what to specify or how to evaluate components in this area
or measure performance after the pc is built.

Any comments or suggestions?

I want them to have a fast machine but not on the bleeding
(expensive) edge.

Other than GIMPS I'm sure my nephew will be the heaviest load
when he plays games on the new machine.

I think I should also request the video card has all of it's own
memory, right? I don't want the video to share the main memory
for performance reasons, right?

Mersenne: Drifting UP(!) in Top Producers ranking?

I have 3 pcs doing factoring. I have been checking my position

When I was doing double checks I would move up when I finished a

I don't understand how I can move UP in factoring list during

Mersenne: Re: idea for a new prime95 version

Unfortunately, the people who care enough about their screensavers to make
them Prime95 non-friendly are probably not going to be willing to settle for
a few still shots. The cat idea still sounds really good.

Maybe, but with the increasing popularity of digital camers it
would allow people to build a 'personal' screen saver with their
own pictures.

Idea for a screensaver for Prime95, let the user specify a
directory of picture files and Prime would pick one to display
every few minutes. Decoding a JPG or GIF would suck up some
cycles but between picture updates Prime would get them all.

Both to get the Prime95 times at home back up, and since I plan to put

 the list:

 Are hard PCI modems available?

Is your software assisted modem online all the time? I wouldn't think
it should affect prime when you're offline. (Should it?)

If you don't have to have an internal modem get yourself an external
modem and drive it with a serial port. I love the ability to SEE the
modem lights (is it still online? is data flowing?) and also the
ability to reset the modem without having to reboot the whole pc.

Have a look at your hard disk light! If it's on all the time, it's

Or other processes are driving up memory usage, and they take a while to
 start up.

Daily Win98 restarts keeps the slow down from getting too excesive.

Mersenne: Prime95 causes screen jitters

2000-02-06 Thread Russel Brooks

I've got my friend's 450MHz PII Aptiva with 256Meg ram running Prime95
under Win98. I'm seeing minor interference on the display when Prime is
running. If I stop Prime the interference stops. Not much else is
running 99% of the time so it's an ideal GIMPS machine but I'm bothered
by the affect it has on the display. I've tried all kinds of different
resolutions and sync rates but the ONLY thing that seems to affect it is
whether or not Prime95 is running.

Any ideas? ...suggestions?

RE: Mersenne: The return of poaching?

2000-02-04 Thread Russel Brooks

Let me give you the 'newbie' point of view to all this.

I've only been part of GIMPS for a couple of months. It looked like
something fun to do, useful for science, etc. and a good way to burn off
those spare cycles that keep building up. :-)

Here I thought I was part of some great cause and we were only here for
the common good. Little did I know there really is a dark side to the
force and behind the scenes GIMPS is really Peyton Place.

I'm not even sure WHY anyone wants to go to the trouble of filtering out
high exponents. Will this result in more LL hours worked and a higher
position on the performers lists?

Also, what's this about poaching? Sounds like stealing; what is there
to steal in GIMPS?

The biggest downside to this thread is that it exists at all. It's hard
to attract new believers to a cause once they hear about the associated
corruption.
