[meteorite-list] question: Tafassasset classification

2002-10-09 Thread NigerMeteorite

Hello Anne and list,

Sinve I recovered a small fragment from the Tafassasset strewfield I have a few questions regarding the current research on this meteorite. Our 9g Individual has been classified as carbonaceous chondrite or primitive achondrite (equilibrated CR-like meteorite). A quite exotic classification that in terms of nomenclature refers to the entry in MAPS 37 (provisional announcement, p.19f.). In other papers Tafassasset is usually discussed as equilibrated CR-chondrite or CR-like chondrite or sometimes as ungrouped CR-chondrite. J. Zipfel from the MPI in Mainz says that refractory lithophiles fractionated compared to a typical CR composition is leading to a possible classification as primitive achondrite. Does anybody know about a final classification yet?

Second question is TKW. In the first report in MAPS 37 the TKW is discribed as 110kg. But I just came across an article by Anne Black in Fusion Crust (march 02). (You should see the outstanding Tafassasset specimen on her page!) She reports about recent analysis and the fact,
that some of the material recovered in fact turned out to be meteorites of other petrologic types. As I intend to put an endcut of my recovered individual on ebay any information about TKW and final classification would be aprecciated.

Concerning colour and texture of Tafassasset I was surprised to see that other specimen show a grey or light grey matrix. Except for the many kamacite and martensite grains mine shows a dark almost black matrix. If anybody in the list knows similar Tafassasset samples I would be thankful for a post.

thanks all for your efforts
best wishes

Svend

Geez
farmer. Is there anybody in Morocco that you are not enemies with. Maybe
you should do what everybody else does and learn to deal with the nomads
directly. Whats it now, 17 trips - and you still cant get anybody to show
you material before anybody else. You still cant get first look at anything.
Some people are just slow learners I guess. Maybe after 6o trips you will
get on good terms with somebody.
But
I guess that you are on such bad terms with anybody who speaks the same
language as the nomads that dealing directly with them is no longer an
option for you.
Crawl
back into your hole farmer and continue selling your overpriced falls for
double what anybody else charges and leave the real dealing to the big
boys who know what they are doing and who can deal on a level that dont
get everybody mad at you. Maybe you can even talk John Gwillian into looking
around Tucsons Red Light district next Tucson. You could offer him 4 grams
for free of your next HUGE overpriced fall and he will be eating out of
your hand like a baby. He dont cost much. Hell, maybe he could make enough
money to pay the mortgage on your house. Thats not going to happen if you
try and compete with Habibi. Habibi is legit and is most likely not selling
fake stuff.
Habibi
dont have to be a con artist. Unlike you, Habibi has a very good working
relationship directly with certain nomads and dont have to pay a middleman
in Erfoud for his stuff.
Now
go cry some more farmer. Just dont get more water on your Bensour. It got
wet enough sitting around Algeria for a month during the rain.
Chao
DEAN
PS:
For
the record I dont know Habibi well. I know that he has lots of stuff but
I dont buy from him so I cant vouch good or bad about Habibi from personal
experience. Its not that I wont if he gave me a good offer. Its just that
unlike farmer, I usually cut out the middlemen in my NWA buys. Thats why
Farmer gets pissed off with me when I sell stuff for less than he does.
Also unlike Farmer, I also dont feel a need to run down and tell people
that my competators are people that you should watch out for. But I guess
that Farmer and Habibi are not buying competators. By buying directly from
the nomads I might be Habibis competator but since Farmer dont deal directly
with the nomads Farmer and Habibi are are not buying competators.
In
fact the only reason that Farmer is warning you all about Habibi is because
Habibi is selling stuff for a lot less than Farmer lists things at. That
got Farmer bitching at Casper some years back because Casper sold stuff
for less than him - therby depriving Farmer of an ability to charge more.
And it got him pissed off with me about selling CR2 for $23.50 when the
going rate was $60 (Or so farmer wanted it to be). Not that Habibi is selling
for $10 I guess that I wont get $23.50 in the near future for mine but
I wont use that as an excuse to warn you to not pay Habibi less than half
what I am selling things for. If he wants to undercut my price that his
option. I can handle the competation. I would take any warning that farm!

Congratulations to the authors. This paper sets the
standard for an all-inclusive, cross-discipline study
of an individual [martian] meteorite. You'll want to
get your hands on a copy of the latest issue of MPS.

Here's a sample from the abstract:

On the basis of grain size, pyroxene zoning and
composition, abundance of silica inclusions associated
with maskelynite, trace element abundances, REE
pattern and oxygen isotopes, pairing with NWA 480 is
excluded. [also excluded was Los Angeles]
The similarity with Shergotty and Zagami is
striking. [but not similar to Los Angeles]
The only significant differences are a larger grain
size, a greater abundance of silica and melt pockets,
a slightly more restricted range of pyroxene
compositions and the absence of significant
mesostasis.

[meteorite-list] J002E3: An Update

2002-10-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov

J002E3: An Update
Steve Chesley and Paul Chodas
NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office
October 9, 2002

We have new results since our September 19 report on the
distant Earth satellite J002E3. Evidence continues to accumulate that
J002E3 is the lost S-IVB third stage from the Saturn V rocket used to
launch the Apollo 12 lunar landing mission in November 1969.

J002E3 passed into the daytime morning sky around Sept. 24, and a week
later amateur astronomers Richard Fredrick and Vance Morgan at Powell
Observatory in Kansas recovered the object after it had crossed into
the evening sky. However, their measurements did not match the
predicted position unless we added a gentle push from solar radiation
pressure to our acceleration model. As more observations were reported
over the next few days, it became clear, not only that radiation
pressure was detectable in the motion of the body, confirming that
J002E3 is a man-made object, but also that the size of this
acceleration matches very well with what we would expect for an S-IVB.

With the quality of our orbital solution improving, we decided to look
to see if this relatively bright object had been detected by other
telescopes before its discovery in the first week of
September. Indeed, using the SkyMorph online search system, we
found a single trail from the fast-moving object on an image taken by
the NEAT-Palomar NEO survey on June 16, 2002. After we notified
him of the detection, Reiner Stoss of DANEOPS
[http://earn.dlr.de/daneops/] immediately measured the precise
position for us.

The new precovery data extended the arc of observations from 35 days
to 114 days, dramatically improving our ability to determine the past
and future paths of this object and to measure the acceleration of
solar radiation pressure. At our last report we had only 15 days of
observations and there was greater uncertainty about what the future
held for J002E3. We were not sure how long it would remain in the
Earth's vicinity, although it appeared likely to escape next June. We
could not even rule out the possibility of a collision with the Earth
or Moon over the the next year. It is now certain that J002E3 will
depart the Earth-Moon system in June 2003 and that there is no
possibility of an impact for several decades. In the years ahead
J002E3 may be recaptured, but the first opportunity for this will not
be until the mid-2040s.

Looking into the past, we are still unable to connect the motion of
J002E3 with the last know position of the Apollo 12 S-IVB. One reason
is that the solar radiation pressure is not constant in time, but
rather changes with its position around the sun; to precisely account
for this effect we need to know the pole of rotation. Furthermore, if
J002E3 is the Apollo 12 S-IVB then that stage spent more than a year
in a highly chaotic orbit around the Earth. So far these two factors
have combined to prevent us from predicting the position of J002E3
with sufficient precision to definitively link these two
objects. Nonetheless, we are hopeful that with continued observations,
and with the possibility of additional precovery observations, this
link can be conclusively established before J002E3 slips back into
solar orbit next summer.

[meteorite-list] 66th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting

2002-10-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/metsoc2003/

66th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting
July 28 - August 1, 2003, Munster, Germany

WHEN AND WHERE -
You are cordially invited to attend the 66th Annual Meeting of
the Meteoritical Society, to be held at the University of
Münster from Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, 2003.

Münster is served by the international airport FMO
(Münster/Osnabrück), located 32 km from the city with regular
service from major German cities and from London, Paris, and
Zürich. The city center can easily be reached by public
transportation and by taxi. Münster is also connected to the
Frankfurt/Main, Düsseldorf, and Amsterdam airports via the
Intercity/Eurocity train system.

Oral and poster sessions will be held in the Schloss. Oral
sessions will be held in two adjoining lecture rooms seating 395
and 210 people; posters will be displayed in the entrance hall.
Directly adjacent to the lecture rooms will be an Internet café,
a preparation room, and a room for meetings of the various
committees. The Schlossgarten is available for informal
gatherings and picnic lunches.

The Schloss, built in 1773, and now the central University
building, is situated close to the city center and within less
than 15 minutes walking distance from most hotels. There is also
convenient public transportation; bikes can be rented by the
more adventurous.

Münster, the city of the Westphalian Peace Treaty, which in 1648
ended the Thirty Years War in Europe, is well suited for a
Meteoritical Society Meeting. Münster is a city of
administration, courts, high technology, and especially
academia. Actually, our 280,000 inhabitants are rather
bourgeois. Two-thirds of the employed people are civil servants
and other white-collar employees. Münster serves as a shopping
and cultural center for about 1.4 million people from the city
and its environs. The Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in
Münster with about 46,000 students is the third largest
university in Germany.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM -
On-site registration will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27,
and will be accompanied by a welcome reception in the Schloss
Foyer. Oral and poster sessions will be held from Monday morning
through Friday afternoon, with the exception of Wednesday.

ACCOMMODATIONS -
About 250 rooms in various central hotels have been prebooked
and will be held until May 26, 2003. Participants will find a
hotel list with the prices and a map for orientation on the
Münster meeting Web site. Participants are requested to book and
pay directly with the hotel of their choice. In order to get the
reduced rate they should indicate the keyword MetSoc.

Participants may also make their own hotel reservations with
Münster Marketing:
 Phone: +49 251 492 2726
 Fax: +49 251 492 7759
 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Web: http://www.muenster.de/tourismus

TRAVEL GRANTS -
A number of travel grants will be made available to qualified
students and recent Ph.D.s who are members of the Meteoritical
Society. We also hope to be able to provide travel grants for a
few participants from the former CIS and other needy countries.
Applicants must be the sole or first author of an abstract to be
presented at the meeting and must also submit a travel award
application form to the LPI. More information will be included
in the second announcement.

GUEST ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS -
The annual banquet will take place on Thursday evening next to
the Schloss. On Wednesday there will be a full day excursion to
the Ruhr-area, focusing on socio-economic aspects. During the
last two decades this region has made the transition from a
former mining and heavy industry district to a modern
high-technology and service industry area.

During the meeting guests may take part in a number of guided
tours in Münster and its surrounding area, the Münsterland, with
its 100 water castles. A travel agent will be at the meeting
site to provide information and reservations.

There are postmeeting excursions planned to the Ries meteorite
crater, to the Eifel region with its volcanic maar, and to the
Wattenmeer, the world's largest tidal flats.

FUTURE ANNOUNCEMENTS -
Future announcements, including information for submission of
abstracts, will be posted on this Web site.

Additional information (such as maps, details on available
accommodations, and suggestions for things to do in and around
Münster) will be posted on the Münster meeting Web site:
http://ifp.uni-muenster.de/metsoc2003

If you are interested in obtaining more information about the
Meteoritical Society or want to apply for membership, visit the
Meteoritical Society Web site:
   www.uark.edu/metsoc

INDICATION OF INTEREST -
To subscribe to a mailing list to receive electronic reminders
and special announcements relating to the meeting via e-mail,
please submit an electronic Indication of Interest form by
December 6, 2002.

You may also send an e-mail with MetSoc 2003 Interest in the

rock art (petroglyphs, pictographs, etc.) and the state of the art in
dating the art. One of the topics covered was the deposition of
desert varnish. The following gentleman is doing some research in this
area, and may be of assistance:

Dr Alan Watchman
Coordinator of Prehistoric Rock Art Studies
School of Anthropology and Archaeology

to an unprovoked attack was far more mature than in the past I,

As you all have seen, I was verbally attacked by Dean Bessy tonight, out of the blue, no reason, no provocation. I want Dean removed from the list, at least temporarily, either we follow the rules, or they are meaningless.
I have just emailed the list owner, Art and suggested this.

any thoughts?

Maybe Mr. Notkin can add to this? Geoffrey?

 Dear Rosie and List:

Matt and I did amuse ourselves considerably, about this very matter
earlier today.

He and I once had the dubious pleasure of dining together on waterlogged
green beans, soggy mashed potatoes and very hard, overcooked, char-broiled .
. . something . . . at the world famous Alien Inn in Rachel, Nevada -- which
is pretty much just a bar inside a cinder block shack in the middle of the
desert.

As many of you will already know, I suspect, Rachel -- and hence the Alien
Inn, which is practically the only building in town -- is in the heart of
the so-called Extraterrestrial Highway, a road which passes very close to
the so-called Area 51. The Alien Inn is almost entirely packed with pro-NRA
material and alien paraphernalia: t-shirts, glow in the dark greys,
buttons, mugs, alien dummies, you name it. My Area 51 Topless XXX and Who
Cares?! T-shirt which was quite a hit in Tucson this year (and not nearly
as obscene as it sounds) was in fact purchased in the Alien Inn.

So, what I said to Matt this morning was, If a meteorite landed in
Nevada, I'm dead certain it would have been in the car park of the Alien
Inn. After all, they have been expecting it -- or something similar -- for
quite some time.

I've been trying to avoid doing this, but I guess I'll now have to share
this photo with you all. It's a picture of me and a few friends, and was
taken by Matt inside the dreaded Alien Inn, during the spring of last year:

Dear Jonathan,
As you know, little boys often fight on the play ground. Makes them feel real important, like Daddy. Someday, hopefully, they will grow up and behave like adults.
Like a good Daddy does. See?
I suggest either a boxing match (bad Daddy style) between the kids during the Tucson show, or perhaps a kiss and make up (Mommy style) at Michael Blood's Tucson Auction. Some meteorite dealer could make a lot of money here!
Ooohhh heck, never mind.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 1109 Howardite or Eucrite?

2002-10-09 Thread Adam Hupe

Hello Matt, Hello List members,

NWA 1109 is currently being studied at the University of Washington not
UCLA. A final classification has not yet been released but will happen very
soon. NWA 1109 was provisionally called a eucrite by the University of
Washington and ourselves. To clear things up with list members who may not
be aware of the process provisional classifications mean nothing, it is only
an educated guess to reserve a serial number for future study. Until an
abstract is submitted and the Nomenclature Committee votes a classification
remains provisional. It looks like NWA 1109 may turn out to be a very
interesting and rare polymict eucrite with over 20 different basaltic
textures (sizes) incorporated and a huge array of accessory minerals. I do
not believe there is enough orthopyroxene(diogenite component) incorporated
to qualify it as a Howardite. The requirement is 10%. David Weirs web site
addresses this ratio in an excellent manner.

To add more confusion three stones were claimed under the provisional name
NWA 1109 and one of them may indeed be a howardite unpaired to the other two
stones. You can now see the importance of having a qualified scientist sort
these things out. If you compare images of howardites and polymict eucrites
you will see how hard they are to tell apart. Some have even been
reclassified after certification.

I hope this helps,

Adam Hupe
