Re: [meteorite-list] Scientists Outline Meteors' Paths inColorado/Utah

2002-10-10 Thread Martin Horejsi

Huh???

The object probably accelerated quickly in Earth's atmosphere, streaking
 faster
than 20,000 mph by the time it was 10 or 15 miles above the surface, Murphy
speculated. At that point, the shock wave created by such acceleration could
have split the meteorite into many pieces, which fell to the ground or
 disintegrated.

So meteorites actually accelerate in our atmosphere rather than decelerate?

Doug Duncan, director of the University of Colorado's Fiske Planetarium, was
pessimistic that anyone would stumble upon a chunk of meteorite.
For every correct meteorite an amateur collects, there's 10 'meteorwrongs,'
 he
joked. And these things typically burn at 100 miles up. They can look pretty
 close, but that's deceptive.

Wow! a 10% meteorite/wrong success rate. I've heard ASU put their rate at 1%
and I figured that was generous.

Just my early morning breakfast thoughts.

Cheers,

Martin

If you're talking about the Leonids, then yes! Average of 1,000 to 6,000
ZHR. But the moon will be full, so that will cut some of them down. If you
missied last year's shower (or storm) then this is your last chance because
after this one there isn't going to be any this big for a *long* time. In
fact the rate is acutaly going to go down below average.

Meteor Storm Forecast
NASA Science News
October 9, 2002

NASA scientists have just released new predictions for the 2002 Leonid
meteor storm.

A New Mexican desert. A graveyard in West Virginia. The
International Space Station (ISS). What do these places have in common?
Experts say they're good spots to watch the 2002 Leonid meteor storm, which
is expected this year on Nov. 19th.

We've calculated meteor rates for 58 cities around the world and for the
space station, says Bill Cooke of the Marshall Space Flight Center's Space
Environments Team. People who live in North America or Europe or onboard
the ISS are going to see a lot of Leonids next month.

Leonid meteor storms happen when Earth plows through clouds of dusty debris
shed by comet 55/P Tempel-Tuttle. Right now Earth is heading for two such
clouds. We'll collide with both of them on Tuesday, Nov. 19th, says Cooke.
The first cloud will cause a flurry of meteors over Europe at about 0400
UT. We expect sky watchers in the countryside (away from bright city lights)
to see between 500 and 1000 Leonids per hour.

Earth will plow into the second cloud about six hours later (1030 UT or 5:30
a.m. EST) and cause an even bigger outburst over North America. Observers
here in the United States could see as many as 2000 per hour, he predicts.

Other parts of the world will be sprinkled with Leonids, too, but nothing
like Europe or North America. If the predictions are correct, observers in
Asia, Australia, South America and much of Africa will count no more than a
few dozen bright meteors in a one-hour span.

Although millions of people will experience either the European outburst or
the North American outburst, only three people will see both: the crew of
the International Space Station.

The ISS will be flying over Europe during the first outburst, explains Rob
Suggs, leader of the Space Environments Team. Then it will pass over North
America during the second outburst. Perfect timing! Astronauts looking out
the station's windows could spot more meteors than anyone else.

Meteor watching from the space station isn't like meteor watching from the
ground. On Earth we look up to see shooting stars. On the ISS they look
down. That's because meteoroids glow

[meteorite-list] Scientists Fired Up To Find Meteors That Flew Over Colorado

2002-10-10 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%257E53%257E911838%257E,00.html

Scientists all fired up to find meteors that flew over state
By George Merritt
The Denver Post
October 9, 2002

Scientists hope to find the remnants of two meteors that lit up the
evening sky on Sunday and Monday.

Officials at the Denver Museum of Nature Science were abuzz Tuesday,
calling two fireballs coming to Earth on consecutive days, at nearly the
same time of day, very, very unusual.

They carry quite a lesson on the history of our solar system, said
Dr. Jack Murphy, the geology curator at the museum. And they
come to us for free. We don't have to go up in a spaceship.

Scientists can test the composition of a meteor to find its origin.
Murphy said meteors usually are small pieces of the moon, Mars
or the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Murphy said the actual pieces of the meteors could be very small
and possibly buried in the ground from impact, but he is hopeful
someone witnessed one hit the ground.

To that end, Murphy and his colleagues are triangulating witness
reports to keep the search for the space rocks less like a needle in
a haystack. They have narrowed the search for Sunday's meteor to
the region around Rio Blanco in the western part of the state. The
search area is still massive and remote, so Murphy is banking on
someone having seen it hit.

We hope that one hit somebody's barn, Murphy said.

They believe Monday's meteor shot over Colorado and broke up
over New Mexico.

As meteors get closer to the ground, the thick air blows them into
smaller pieces that compound an already difficult search.

The two meteors have excited both the scientific community and
bystanders around the West because of their luminosity and
irregularity. Both of the fireballs put on a wild display of color, with
reports of everything from green and blue to orange and red.

It seemed like it could be a missile, Howard Cook said of his first
glance at Monday's meteor.

Cook, also a scientist at the museum, was driving home to
Colorado Springs when he saw the meteor shooting from north to
south over the Front Range.

It was a very bright green ball of fire, Cook said. It had orange
and red sparks shooting off of it.

Meteors travel at such high speeds that contact with the air in
Earth's atmosphere makes them so hot they flare into a
magnificent light show.

Cook said the bright ball appeared to be about the size of a softball
held at arm's length and was visible for almost 10 seconds.

Both meteors came between 7:15 and 7:25 p.m. They were not
predicted, but Murphy said there is no indication that they came
from a previously unknown meteor shower.

Meteor showers produce little shooting stars, Murphy said.
These were larger fireballs that are associated with pieces of
asteroids.

Hi Rosie all,
I hold a yearly auction at the Tucson Show, as does Darryl Pitt.
I have held mine starting 3 shows ago and Darryl for the last 2 shows.
We both hold them the middle weekend of the show, 1 week before the
retail show which marks the end of the show, in general.
The Tucson Show began about 25 or 30 years ago, with dealers
opening their doors to the public and selling wholesale several days
before the retail show. That generated so much business that in a few
years, dealers were coming a week early and doing more business
selling before the show than at the show - soon, many dealers came
ONLY for the wholesale show, and it stretched to 2 weeks prior to
the retail show and became the largest gem and mineral show
in the world.
Now, it is not possible to spend 8 hrs a day for 2 weeks and see
all the rooms. Dozens upon dozens of motels are filled with 200 to
500 rooms of dealers. It is spectacular - and overwhelming.
Bob Haag, Al Lang, Edwin Thompson, Blaine Reed and a few others
started selling meteorites at the show over a dozen years ago many
dealers have since been added to that list. You also get some Australian
Russian and other mineral dealers that carry meteorites in addition to
minerals and/or fossils. Most, but by no means all, the meteorite dealers
are at the Inn Suites.
Darryl has held his 2 auctions poolside at 10 AM on Sunday and
I have held my 3 auctions at the Jr. Chamber of Commerce building,
about 2 or 3 miles from there, on Fri or Sat evening.
Darryl's auction is called The Macovich Auction (after a WWII
buddy of Darryl's father) and tends to offer specimens of value from
a couple hundred dollars to many thousands of dollars. Some of the
very best quality and visually exciting material to be found, not only
at the Tucson Show, but in the world are offered at Darryl's auction.
My auction, sometimes called The People's Auction or at other
times called The Michael Blood Auction, offers the opportunity to anyone
to sell stuff they have upgraded in their collection, dealers sometimes
offer a range of stuff with no minimum bid, dealers who on the spur of the moment decide to put that one really killer piece up for grabs, even though
it is a $3K to $35K piece...last minute entry, etc. It gives buyers the chance
to get stuff at prices from under $10 to some really valuable material - either
for private collection or for resale. There are always numerous items sold for under $10 and I have sold many items between $3K and $4K - the highest
being a fabulous slice of Lake Murry for $7,600 bought by +. Of course,
there are all kinds of specimens between $10 and $1,000, as well. Just about everyone into meteorites at the show comes, and it is a party atmosphere,
with beer and laughs and a lot of good times.
So, the Tucson Auction is a title that is a little misleading, as there
are two auctions in Tucson.
 Best wishes, Michael

New York Time New York City, New York Thursday, April 19, 1906 Page: 10 FOUND METEOR FRAGMENT Cemetery Workman Digs Up One Buried for Twelve Years Special to The New York Times RAHWAY, N.J., April 18. - John Godfray, in excavating for a monument today in Hazlewood Cemetery, dug up a meteor fragment weighing 25 pounds. It seemed to be composed of fused minerals, glass, stone and steel. There is a mixture of vari-colored stones intermingled through the otherwise gray mass. Tweleve years ago Keron Kiernan, keeper of the cemetary, while at work one afternoon, heard a whistle, like escaping steam, coming through the clouds overhead. Then came a bright light, an oder of sulpher filled the air, and about fifty feet from where he stood a missile buried itself in the ground scorching the grass about and melting the gravel where it fell. The opening showed the object to have buried twelve feet deep. Since then it has gradually worked to the surface.

[meteorite-list] Re: [meteorite-list]Norton behide the Virus

2002-10-10 Thread azaware

I have outlook express and I get about 5 emails a day with virus. I get
them every way you can think of. I'm getting these one emails Undeliverable
mail. As far as I can see it looks like I'm sending them and then they come
back to me saying that it couldn't be sent, with the virus. Then to top it
off you can't email them back to give them a few words. Norton has to behind
this, who else is making out. Norton paying these guys to this. If they
were just sending here and there I could understand, but this is a full time
job. Who's getting rich. The more computers they can infect the more money
they make. Norton is a growing company, are they just going to sit there and
hope some lunatics send out viruses. What if they stopped sending viruses,
then Norton would go out of business. Are they going to sit there and wait
to go out of business? I don't think so. I've seen fad come and go and they
usually go, but this fad just keeps getting bigger. You can bank on it,
there behind this. Also its always a virus Norton can fix.

Been hit with a meteorite and lived.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite presentations (sorry if it's long!)

2002-10-10 Thread Edward R. Hodges

Hello list. It's very active today, I like that.
Last night I gave a meteorite presentation at the San Diego Lapidary Society. It
most certainly was not the first presentation I've ever given in front of
people, but it was the first one about meteorites. Their general meeting
was called to order at 7pm, and they went about their business. You know, Robert
Rules of order kind of stuff, and a raffle. It was quite pleasant actually. Most
of the membership is quite a bit older than myself and my girlfriend. One kind
older gentleman came over and told me great stories about the meteorites he's
found. Other members came up to me with three different rocks and asked if they
were meteorites, unfortunately they were not and I had to be the one to break
the bad news. I finally got to speak around 8:15pm and was quite nervous. I made
up a packet of text that I wrote with graphics, images, and other statistics and
passed them out. I also brought about 50 specimens to show aroundand
somemoldavites and tektites. I really was geared up to give a really great
talk, I had already visualized it in my head. So I introduced myself, and
quickly warned them that:" I have a tendency to go off on tangents and never
come back. Oh, and I'm longwinded at times, so I'll be sticking to the script"
So I was very nervous all of a sudden and started to stammer and forget the
words and had to begin reading. I told them about the beginnings of the solar
system, accretion, asteroids, oxygen isotopes, fall statistics, identifying
meteorites, classification with actual samples of each class, chemical make -up,
Prospects for life elsewhere (alh84001, murchison, Allende, etc.), then I told
them about the new large object that was just announced on Monday. Wow was I
imparting the goods on these people. Then I looked up and people were nodding
off, the people in the back had already snuck out. I had been talking for about
45 minutes. I could feel that hollow pit in my stomach becoming an abysmal void
and I was getting sucked down. I could feel the beads of sweat forming on my
bald head, my girlfriend was staring right at me. I wrapped in up quickly, and
asked if there were questions. The few people who hadn't snuck out already had
plenty of questions, and some were quite tricky. One woman right up front told
me about her grandfather getting his haystack burnt down by a meteor. I didn't
know what to say. I blurted out "Really, how interesting!" It doesn't quite seem
possible to me, but I couldn't tell her that. I think it was well past there bed
time, because after I ended the talk they politely clapped and got the hell out
of there. I knew as soon as I sat down in the car what had gone wrong. I'm very
hard on myself, very critical. My girlfriend told me what a great job I did,
which is nice and I think she was trying to be nice. If you are this far down
into this diatribe you've probably already got me pegged. I'm a nervous talker,
and I'm longwinded. Strike one. I hadn't pictured the right audience in my
pre-visualization. Strike two. I had mistaken a meteorite talk with a meteorite
lecture. Strike three. When I was falling asleep last night I couldn't help
thinking that I could know so much more on the topic. I now realize that all
that information is notthe important thing. The important thing is
thatyou are entertaining the audience and creating an experience that they
will remember. If your lucky they will learn something. I'm going to try and
keep those things in mind next time. I'll try to be moreshow and less
tell. Hopefully others of you have had these types of experiences and would
share them. Maybe some of you can offer some tips, or criticisms. Perhaps some
of you will tell me to please not write long emails and send them to this list.
Anyway, I hope sharing was a good idea.- Edward

Edward, dont worry, I always feel that way and

It sounds like the Klez virus. Norton's or McAfee's sites will tell you
step-by-step how to remove it. Also, the Bugbear worm is making the rounds
too. The Klez disables your anti-virus and won't let you reinstall your
anti-virus either...until you disable the worm. This means deleting a file or
two and deleting a couple of registry entries.

Hi Ed,
Very nice of you to share how hard it went. All of us on the list
appreciate your honesty and no doubt many of us have been there. It's
natural when you're so enthusiastic and knowledgeable to go on about
a topic. I can relate. I teach community education astronomy and over
the years have learned that the fewer concepts introduced, the better. I
usually give my presentation with slides and keep it to about 25 slides
maximum (1 hour class time). I also try to invite the audience to
participate like asking them easy questions that help lead them into the
subject. Humor is the best thing. A few jokes here and there keep
everyone awake and alert. Still I've gone on too long or gotten into
obscure areas and regretted it. It's something I wrestle with all the time
as I attempt to get better at the craft. Heck, I've been teaching over a
dozen years and if there's one thing I keep telling myself it to simplify,
simplify, simplify. Having meteorites to pass around was great. It might
have even be better to ask the people to come to the front of the room
and handle them. That way they get off their feet, move around and
tend to ask more questions. Another thing I've found useful is to walk
among the audience while talking and make good eye contact as I go.
Personal stories also even out the statistical aspect of things. I find
people will sit up and listen if they hear a funny or curious story
involving your own personal experience. It feels genuine and less
didactic.
Well, perhaps I've gone on too long here :-)but again, I thank you for
telling the group how it went. I have no doubt that should you have
more opportunities things will get easier.

Hello list. It's very active today, I like that. Last night I gave a meteorite
presentation at the San Diego Lapidary Society. It most certainly was not the first
presentation I've ever given in front of people, but it was the first one about
meteorites. Their general meeting was called to
order at 7pm, and they went about their business. You know, Robert Rules of order kind
of stuff, and a raffle. It was quite pleasant actually. Most of the membership is
quite a bit older than myself and my girlfriend. One kind older gentleman came over
and told me great stories about the
meteorites he's found. Other members came up to me with three different rocks and
asked if they were meteorites, unfortunately they were not and I had to be the one to
break the bad news. I finally got to speak around 8:15pm and was quite nervous. I made
up a packet of text that I wrote with
graphics, images, and other statistics and passed them out. I also brought about 50
specimens to show around and some moldavites and tektites. I really was geared up to
give a really great talk, I had already visualized it in my head. So I introduced
myself, and quickly warned them that: I have
a tendency to go off on tangents and never come back. Oh, and I'm longwinded at times,
so I'll be sticking to the script So I was very nervous all of a sudden and started
to stammer and forget the words and had to begin reading. I told them about the
beginnings of the solar system, accretion,
asteroids, oxygen isotopes, fall statistics, identifying meteorites, classification
with actual samples of each class, chemical make -up, Prospects for life elsewhere
(alh84001, murchison, Allende, etc.), then I told them about the new large object that
was just announced on Monday. Wow was I
imparting the goods on these people. Then I looked up and people were nodding off, the
people in the back had already snuck out. I had been talking for about 45 minutes. I
could feel that hollow pit in my stomach becoming an abysmal void and I was getting
sucked down. I could feel the beads of
sweat forming on my bald head, my girlfriend was staring right at me. I wrapped in up
quickly, and asked if there were questions. The few people who hadn't snuck out
already had plenty of questions, and some were quite tricky. One woman right up front
told me about her grandfather getting his
haystack burnt down by a meteor. I didn't know what to say. I blurted out Really, how
interesting! It doesn't quite seem possible to me, but I couldn't tell her that. I
think it was well past there bed time, because after I ended the talk they politely
clapped and got the hell out of there. I
knew as soon as I sat down in the car what had gone wrong. I'm very hard on myself,
very critical. My girlfriend told me what a great job I did, which is nice and I think
she was trying to be nice. If you are this far down into this diatribe you've probably
already got me pegged. I'm a nervous
talker, and I'm longwinded. Strike one. I hadn't pictured the right audience in my
pre-visualization. Strike two. I had mistaken a meteorite talk with a meteorite
lecture. Strike three. When I was falling asleep last night I couldn't help thinking
that I could know so much more on the topic. I
now realize that all

[meteorite-list] Traveling Meteorite Mineral Displays

2002-10-10 Thread EL Jones

Hello Listees and Affectionatos,

Ed's post on meteorite lectures prompted me to to pass along something I
have discovered with respect to displaying ones collection in exhibits.
I have been asked to set up an exhibit for local libraries and nature
centers. I loathed the idea of leaving my specimens in open and loathed
setting up a different arrangement at each location. I was shopping at
Ames Department Stores, a chain now liquidating in the northeast, where
they were selling store fixtures. They were selling off nice jewelry,
turntable glass and Plexiglas tabletop cabinets (from $5-$25-$50 or so)
which are well suited to traveling exhibits. They are lockable,
securable, and offer space for 20-90 micro boxes. The internal turntable
allows a viewer to look upon all the specimens, yet only take up a 15x15
inch footprint. The breadbox-size lockers can hold all but the largest
whole meteorites. All the cases have security cables and can be
discretely locked together.

The Ames liquidation only has about 10 more days, but the rumor on the
street is that November-January, K-Mart will be closing several stores
nationally. So if you anticipate needing a traveling display --or want
to put up something in your den which doesn't look like a high school
shop project, keep an eye on the types of display cases they have at the
jewelry counter. If one bought these new they would list for $150-$350.

Regards,
Elton

PS: Commercial displays revolve around modular and pegboard systems not
available to consumers for the most part or cheaply anyway. But if you
are an organization freak--or your spouse thinks you NEED to become one,
don't miss the little adjustable plastic pegboard trays/boxes they put
CD's and Nintendo Game Cartridges in. They can be used at home for
computer disks, sewing sundries, batteries, computer parts, ebay
auction, etc. They fill a gap on the garage tool board to keep things
together which you can't otherwise hang on a pegs directly-at 50 cents
they are cheap!.

Some of the tool pegs from the garden wares section are heavy duty
enough to hang my hard hat, rock hammer, metal detector, geiger counter,
bino's, camera, and UV lamp on and still leave room for a field pack.
Makes me feel like a fireman-- I can be out of the house, equipped to
hunt any rock in under 2 minutes!
