[meteorite-list] Space Shuttle Columbia - A Tragic Day!
I too would like to echo the sentiments of others in the sorrow of losing Columbia. This mission has been closely followed by myself and all of Melbourne.Certainly close to our heart. One of our local Universities and High Schools were running an experiment during the mission on the effects of zero gravity on spiders. The 7 astronauts of STS-107 will always be remembered for what they have given to the pursuit of human endeavour. May we all think of the famailies that have been left behind on this terrible day. A sad and tragic day indeed, Jeff KuykenI.M.C.A. #3085www.meteoritesaustralia.com
[meteorite-list] Mercury Meteorite? (ad)
Hi all, I did not want to mention this on our day of mourning, so, have waited past midnight - though no amount of waiting will bring back what we have all lost. In any event, regarding this remarkable material. a 4mg piece was the last specimen entered into my auction that will appear in the catalog. Lest you think 4mg is too small a piece with which to be concerned, be advised that a TOTAL of only 57mg will EVER be in private hands. The rest of the 40 grams of TKW of this remarkable meteorite will stay forever in the two museums (in Russia and Japan) in which they now permanently reside. Therefore, this piece represents over 7% of the privately held material. It is Lot #102 HB 33. Since it JUST arrived, I will extend the deadline for absentee bids to Sunday at midnight. So far the LL3.0 has gotten the most action from absentee bidders, but I won't be surprised if this new addition draws more than a few bids from the absentee crowd, as well. Here's hoping one good thing can come from yesterday's tragedy- perhaps our leaders will quadruple the NASA budget - maybe if we ALL write our respective congressmen senators Best wishes to all, Michael on 1/31/03 6:55 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Lang-Hupé Meteorites have joined forces to acquire the only available specimen of NWA 011. Re: [meteorite-list] Caltech Astronomer Saw Shuttle Apparently in
Hi, This may not be the smoking gun that it appears to be. It is usual for the hot ionized plasma that surrounds the shuttle to detach from the fireball surrounding the craft and trail back before cooling enough to go dark. The only way to distinguish between trailing plasma-balls and trailing debris is by the time each takes to go dark. A material object, like a tile, will continue to generate its own little fireball, and hence is bright much longer. That may be, though when you look at the timeline of events, it starts to get very interesting. At the NASA press conference yesterday, the first sign of any anomaly in the telemetry from Columbia was at 8:53 AM EST, when they lost the data in the sensors in the left wing. Remember, loss of all communications with the shuttle occurred 9AM EST when it was over Texas. The shuttle had started to pass over California, just north of San Francisco, at 8:51 AM EST. What the Caltech astronomer observed occurred very close to, or just prior to the sensors starting to go out on Columbia. [meteorite-list] Big WOW
In Kalpana Chawla's last words to the media, she described one of her big WOWs of being an astronaut. She told about sitting next to a window of the space shuttle while looking down at our wonderful blue planet and it's swirling firmament of clouds. Refocusing, she then saw her own reflection in the shuttle window. Refocusing again, she saw the reflection of the earth in her own eyes. This, she said, was definitely a big WOW. Now, I've chosen to post this message to this list for various reasons. Firstly, I believe that the membership of our meteorite list is comprised of an extremely select group of highly intelligent human beings. Your common interest in meteorites, vessels of information about our existence; about, perhaps, the very creation of the entire universe,... is an omen of a deeper appreciation and reverent respect for that which is greater than us all. (I don't even begin to comprehend it.) There is, however, a feeling I get about space, the stars, the planets, meteorites, and US...that sets my mind spinning as would the needle of a compass in a void. The beautiful dark eyes of Kalpana no longer exist, but I can't help believing that the memory of her big WOW is somehow remembered in a plane of existence beyond my comprehension. Yet I continue to try to understand, and as I do, a feeling for humanity floods over me which I can only describe aslove. Re: [meteorite-list] Caltech Astronomer Saw Shuttle Apparently in
At today's press conference, the Shuttle Program manager confirmed that Columbia was over California at 8:53 AM EST when the sensors in the left wing stopped working, which correlates to the time the Caltech astronomer was observing the shuttle from the ground. The Shuttle people have talked to the astronomer and say his observations may be significent. Re: [meteorite-list] Esterville ?????
Mark / Anyone interested: I don't believe this to be a sample of the Estherville mesosiderite. The metal distribution is wrong, the vugs are large and round while specimens of Estherville display small (1 to 4mm) angular cavities and a bi-modal distribution of metal. Additionally please note the smooth, fine-grained matrix or groundmass of the specimen in question. Estherville's is coarser, granulated and not smooth. The exterior surfaces of every piece of Estherville that I've ever seen have small bits/blebs of exposed metal visible. One Hallmark characteristic of Estherville is it's dark, gray-black-bluish exterior. I see none of this in the hand-samples displayed. I know that we're only working with images here but in my opinion this specimen appears more like an igneous artifact than a meteorite.
