[meteorite-list] Park Forest Pictures
Greetings List, Most of you are pretty much up to date on the happenings in Park Forest today. I'll reserve my comments for now on the unfolding events. I'm getting a hell of an education on meteorite recovery. I had only a fair day in the field, but got to spend the evening with some people whom I only known by name and through e-mail or web sites. It was indeed an honor to have dinner with Al Mitterling, Mike Farmer, Adam Hupe', Steve Arnold (the first) and Al Lang. More pictures available at photos.yahoo.com/stelor96 Click on Park Forest Day 2. If I can stay awake another half hour or so I will post some additional pictures of a house that had a meteorite come through the roof and into the bedroom. The room was absolutely ravaged. More later. Take care, Steve = Steve Witt IMCA #9020 http://www.meteoritecollectors.org __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest debacle / Art's BDay meteorite
Hello List, It is a shame a person from the museum acted this way. Let us hope this is not a stand the whole museum is taking. It does make me wonder how much money they will be offering these people tomorrow.something tells me it wont be much. I just pay paled Mike about the cost of a decent dinner. A very small token of appreciation for the service Art has provided us.just think cable with all the channels here is $80.00 for one month. Hoping others will contribute as well. Mark Bostick Fair is fair, and these jive turkeys crapped on the private sector big time and betrayed the public trust. This is an outrage. As far as limited material - DO PayPal Mike $ for Art. DO IT NOW: This fell on his birthday and Mike has several specimens. The first should go to Art! SEND MIKE a Few Bucks now. There are about 100 of us that are fairly active on this list. If we all send a few bucks, that is enough for a good one to go to Art. (Lurkers, you are welcome to be in on the birthday present for the list benefactor!) Fwd: [meteorite-list] Park Forest fall
Hi Mike and List, Because the news media reported that the going price is $500.00 and ounce, it makes me wonder what the Field Museum is willing to shell out for specimans. Or are people just going to be browbeated for their finds? Seems that the Field Museum will be the recipient of a two-edged sword. First they tell everyone to donate to the Museum / Universities. Then the media heats the fire with the $500.00 an ounce curse. Let me see if I have this right: Media reports $500 an ounce-Field Museum doesn't have those kind of funds (for dinosaur Sue yes), but tells everyone to come Saturday for their big payday.hm. This should be interesting. Steve Sachs (also from Chicago area) IMCA# 9210 ---BeginMessage--- I am also saddened, the people here mostly still have their stones, they think they hit the lotto and made millions. I have offered $5000 for several stones today in the 1 kilo range and been laughed at and nearly booted out. They think that is an insult and freaked out. This is what I am saying, there is no sense of reality now, they all think they are millionaires. I expect there will be a few hundred grams for sale by us dealers, not much more. I mean, who can buy it here and make any money? I hope some change their minds so that we can provide for those who did not make it here. I love meteorites, and love the chase, and this one could be so cool but it is already too stressful. Ask Steve Witt. The man filed a complaint saying Steve ripped him off by not paying him the $500 an ounce ! The police chief told Steve to get out or be arrested. I mean really, what kind of crap is that? By the way, I don't suggest going to the police station or calling them regarding the meteorites, you will not get a warm reception. Mike Farmer ---End Message---

Well, in defense of the common man here, imagine yourself as someone who knows squat about meteorites except for tidbits that cross the news every now and then that tell of a SNC or Lunar selling for a crazy amount of money. Then all of a sudden you have one fall in your yard, it's all over TV, dealers are swooping in and setting up tables to buy it, Museums are clamoring for it - what would you think? I would think I'd hit the jackpot too. As a meteorite enthusiast, I think this would be the perfect time for some meteorite education. Set up a lecture one night to tell people about the different types of meteorites, maybe even have a few to show. Explain why some are really valuable and some aren't quite so valuable. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle
Mike and all the others that went to Chicago, I want to thank you all for your attempts and to say that this will bite the asses of all that have pieces that want too much for them. Let the idiots have there day and think they are going to be rich. Let the museums show their true colors and disappoint those that think they are going to get rich by selling to the museums. Do not let this crap get you mad. I predict that in a month or so this stuff will show up on ebayat first for way too much, then the price will drop. As long as some of our members have some samples they will be able to tell the rest of us if it is real when it hits ebay. In the past couple of years on the antiques road show a man from Tucson had an Indian Chief Blanket on there...valued at $500,000.00+ dollars. My wife and I buy and sell alot of native american blankets. After that blanket aired on the Roadshow every blanket we saw at sales was priced through the roof whether it was native american or made in mexico. We tried to explain to the sellers the differences and they all got mad, said they would rather "donate" to the Heard Museum or what they termed "real" collectors and get the tax break then sell too cheap. Everyone thought they would get rich. For a while you couldn't touch the blankets. We left our cards with everyone and just left them to their own devices. Well then the bubble popped, the museums told them what they had were not the geniune items, and many that were genuine were not "Chief" blankets which are truly rare. Soon after the bubble popped we were bak to buying blankets for what they were worthand we did have the satisifaction of telling those that were truly rude to shove their blankets were the sun don't shine. My point is that these morons with stones that listened to the other morons say it was worth $500 an ounce will soon find out that they can't sell it for that and the museum is not about to pay that much and will be looking to sell the stuff. Afterall, all the museums I have ever dealt with have "limited" budgets. It is not like this is a lunar, how much of it will they actually want to buy? And if you factor in all the "wrongs" that will show up which will probably be 5 times more than the real thing the museum will close shop quickly enough. You guys that went there to get the stuff deserve a huge thanks from all of us for trying. It will show up sooner or later. When people think they have a treasure that will make them rich they are always anxious to get the money. When they find out they are not millionaires they will sell, and then you will be in the driver seat. Hopefully there will be plenty for sale soon Mark M. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle
Hi List, Mike Farmer mentioned the specimens being worth $500.00 an ounce but when we were in the library asking around one of the ladies there told us they were worth $2,000.00 an ounce ($73.00/ gram) so it keeps going up in price. People in that area need to really get a grip on this one. There has to be lots of material around, including some that people haven't come across yet. This looks to be like an LL6 as others have mentioned. It is an ordinary chondrite and a quick look on dealer sites on the internet or if you wish ebay, those items don't usually sell for much more than $2 or $3 a gram (except in low total weight falls). What's a fair price?? I think the guy that sold to Steve W. for $1.00 got a good deal as well as Steve got a reasonable purchase. I had dinner and drinks tonight with Steve Witt, Al Lang, Adam Hupe, Al Mitterling and Steve Arnold, (NOT Chicago:). We are all outraged at what has happened here. Ill explain more. The fact is that yesterday morning several pieces were sold for $1 gram, not an unfair price in the field, low but no big deal. Then the newspapers and news told everyone that the value is $500 per ounce! The Chicago Field Museum curator was telling the police that the people had to sell to them and not to any collectors. So now many people are going to the Field Museum tomorrow to sell their pieces to the museum. They are under the assumption that they must sell them there as that is what the local police is passing on. The prices here are now not under $10 gram, and the people whose homes were hit are at $50 gram plus. Completely out of the realm of reality considering that many homes were hit here. If it were one, I could understand. Another note, the strewnfield is NOT 80 miles long, many people started reporting slag and asphalt everywhere. There are 30 to 40 kilos known, more likely but press coverage is extreme and everyone knows because the TV told them that it is $500 an ounce. So, it looks like if it isn't snowing tomorrow, that ill hunt all day and leave here Sunday. There is nothing more to be gained trying to bargain with the locals. Yes but Alfianello is 1883 historical fall, andd all pieces is in museum and is hard this exit, I see who sale Alfianello for $100/gr. go sold with no problems. The same for my Albareto, I sale for $200/gr. and this go. Many have write to me alfianello, albareto and other historical falls is ordinary chondrites and the price request is esageratedwell, Ensisheim is a ordinary chondrite, why this person not sale for $2/gr. ? Barbotan is a ordinary chondrite, why this is sold for $200/gr.? This person have a 200 gr. of alfianello, but when I have ask to sale to me for $2/gr. the piece I not have received answer, strange...is a ordinary chondrite. The same for this new falls, is not a historical fall, probably at 50 years this new fall enter in the historical falls, but now is a normaly ordinary chondrite fall with over 50 kg. + and a price of $7/gr. is just. Re: Fwd: [meteorite-list] Park Forest fall
My guess is that when the finders show up at the museum, they will probably be told that it's their duty as citizens to donate the meteorites or sell them at a low price. Believe me, there isn't a museum or a research institute out there that will pay $15/g for this material when there is possibly a lot more of it to be found. Within a few weeks, the market for this new fall will drop to a reasonable point . Then all those greedy people who held out for BIG bucks will wish they had sold it to the dealers and collectors in the first place. Watch Ebay. Within the next few days, several pieces will show up with outrageous prices but few, if any, will sell. Those price will adjust too. By Easter time there will be a lot of this stone available at a reasonable price. Unless, of course, someone finds signs of life from outer space in it...like a winged ant or something ;-) Just my opinion, John Gwilliam At 08:49 AM 3/29/03 -0500, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Mike and List, Because the news media reported that the going price is $500.00 and ounce, it makes me wonder what the Field Museum is willing to shell out for specimans. Then the media heats the fire with the $500.00 an ounce curse. In a message dated 3/29/2003 5:23:22 AM US Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: That is 7 times what they paid for it, your saying thats a fair price. What you are forgetting is that does not include air fare, hotel bills, rental cars etc. In addition most dealers will keep a good sized piece for their collections. If a lot of material is bought the cost averages down, but if little is bought it becomes a significant addition to the purchase of the meteorite. Some are also full time dealers so they not only have to get their money out, but make a profit for things like house and car payments, food, taxes, ect. And we haven't even added in cut losses. So is $7 for a stone bought for $1 fair? It all depends, and one of the least important things is how much you pay for an individual stone. The average cost per gram and how much you manage to get are much more important. [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle - whats a fair price?
Hold on a minute, guys! What's all this talk about $7/g? Don't forget that Farmer had to PAY $7/g for most of those premium specimens that had hit a house. We're not going to see those meteorites going for $7/g. No doubt Michael would like to comment on this thread but right now he's out in the field searching for more of this meteorite, so let's not go too far with this thread until those more closely involved can participate. I'm only aware of 1 stone that was acquired for ~$1/g. And that was the one bought by Steve Witt soon after he arrived on the scene. Not long after that prices started to vary greatly. And that particular stone won't be going on the market any time soon. Steve gave permission to have that stone sent to a lab in Washington - in order to have a short-lived radionuclide count performed on it. As you may already know, this is an analysis that researchers are VERY keen to conduct on any VERY recently fallen meteorite. It is preferred to have this test done within hours of the fall! And Steve handed over his stone within 24 hours of having recovered it. It was the 2nd freshest specimen made available for this count. Steve Witt is not a meteorite dealer. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle - whats a fair price?
Hello, Several other stones were purchased for about $1.00 per gram. Approx weight maybe around 3 kilos. However these went straight into personal collections! On a funny note many stones were turned away from several buyers at $1.00 per gram because it was believed that there were going to be 100's of kilos. NOT! Next day, the buyers tried to buy those stones at the $1.00 price per gram and were laughed atby then it was $10.00 per gram...thanks to the police and museum. [meteorite-list] Museum Statement Park Forest?
Dear Listees: Firstly, greetings to all our List members in the field in Chicago, and congrats to those who have already made recoveries. This is the most excitement we've had on the List in a good long time. Secondly, I am very curious about something: I wonder if the comments attributed to person(s) at the Field Museum accusing meteorite dealers of ripping local people off were heard first-hand by anyone, or if such a statement was just hearsay? Of course we all agree with Bob Verish's positive comments regarding the close working relationship between researchers and the amateur collectors/dealers, an alliance that both have worked long and hard to develop. Many of us -- myself included -- have very cordial relationships with members of meteorite academia; there are several prominent academics here on the Meteorite List, and we wouldn't have it any other way. However, after the many meteorite donations made to academia by those very same people who are working in the field today -- Al Lang, Al Mitterling, Mike Farmer, Steve Arnold (IMB), the Hupés and others -- such comments are really unwarranted and in very poor taste. If true, such behavior should be considered before making future trades and donations to that institution. In the meantime, good hunting. Re: [meteorite-list] The true worth of Park Forrest vs Thuathe
That's all the residents of Park forest want too, a meaning windfall out of the blue, a life's wages for a single find. The math was poor but the dream the same. Rob Wesel Somehow, I'm very glad that a few of my bucks for my small Thuathe went to a very lucky kid in Lesthos that will provide him with a meaning windfall, than bribe some Chicago SOB out of his treasure. Not so say I can't understand one wanting to keep anything special like this I found personally even if not a meteorite collector before this fell out of the sky. I wouldn't part with it cheaply if I didn't need the cash. I expect to see more new meteorite collectors showing up on ebay due to the hightened interest than individual meteorites. Alot will probably stay in private hands. Where did all that missing Chassigny go picked up by those French everyman that day, lost in time. Wasn't one large Thuathe worth a year's income in this agarian community. Alot of money and happiness for a silly rock out of the blue. Next to the greed and hostility by some here in the USA, I wish more stones would fall in the laps of wonderful people like these. But I'd love to see one fall in my neighborhood just the same. Heck that is cheap considering all things. Without getting into an argumentthere are so many factors involved with pricing that it is just not that simple. The best thing for one to do if you really want to understand, is travel to a fall, with all the expenses involved, do all the work, the sell your material. By then you will begin to understand. You will never see this meteorite for retail sale at $7.00 per gram. Re: Fwd: [meteorite-list] Park Forest fall
I hope you are right, but now it is being bought by dealers for $12.00 gram . This is not such a large fall, very populated area, so not many lying in fields. Good luck to all wanting some, ill be home in a couple days, I will have some for sale, price unknown but quite expensive. If you want to wait, no problem, but then you risk getting nothing of this fall. Time will tell. I saw nothing today, the people who have the large pieces in there homes will not sell, except one that is, I got that one here beside me right now. It smashed a house, and a printer, and a computer game. I got the printer, meteorite, hole cut out of the roof, shigle with hole through it. 1 kilo, of course, NOT FOR SALE WHATSOEVER, NEVER WILL BE. Sorry to the dealers who tried to outbid me and buy out from under me, the woman who sold it to me had enough integrity to keep her word and complete the deal we made over many hours of haggeling and phone calls. Hi all. I am posting the following message to the List on behalf of Dr. Meenakshi Wadhwa, the Curator of Meteorites at the Field museum. -jeff - To Mike Farmer and List: Regarding statements concerning the Field Museum and relating to the recent meteorite fall in Park Forest: 1. Thank you, it is now almost the best piece in my collection. I only dreamed of owning a house smasher until today, none have been available at all, at least in complete pieces, now I own a house/printer/computer game smasher all in one. I am so thankful for that piece, if not very broke now. Since I have that one, i will need to sell all of what I have in the other fragments. The rest are all from the house on Winslow st, and will include pieces of the siding smashed off by the meteorite. I will take orders first come first served, I need to know how much you want to spend, then when I get home ill cut the pieces up and see where I am. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest
Jeff, and Dr Wadhwa. I will just say this, whatever the source, all of us here, Adam Hupe, Al Lang, Steve Witt, Gary Curtis, Al Mitterling, Steve Arnold meteorite broker etc, have all heard various versions of the same thing, from so many people here, and it seems to have originated in the police department. So I do now know who started it, but what I said is being passes around as the word of law to many people. I would just hope that we could all cooperate, there is plenty of material for all the museums and collectors of the fabulous fall. The Field Museum should of course get many pieces, and I hope to god they get one of the house smashers for the beautiful collection display there. I was merely reporting first hand problems that arose to all of us trying to buy stones. I have donated over $100,000 in meteorites to museums, and now to have them telling people that all the dealers are here to rip them off really chaps my $%#$#$__ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest, most expensive fall in US History
Well, it smashed the plywood and the two by four it hit, and didn't seem to slow down. It then smashed the printer and bounced and dented the wall. I have the shingle, and they are cutting the ceiling hole out for me when they fix the ceiling. The lucky woman who's home it damaged, was sitting at the computer on the email. She said she saw a flash light up the sky outside and then heard the explosion, too loud and long to be thunder. Seconds later the room exploded with a crashing noise and plaster and insulation showered all over the room and her and the printer pieces flew across the room. She saw the hole, went to it and looked up to see through the whole roof and clear sky above. Then she looked down and saw the stone and immediately picked it up. She said it was slightly warm. You don't get much closer than sitting 2 feet from where it lands so I indeed know that the stone was warm. I'm not sure if there is any piece in my collection more important, but I love the Portales Valley I found! Ill be searching again tomorrow to try and find a piece. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest, most expensive fall in US History
The stone has tar from the roof on one side, and white plaster on the other side, so interestingly, that proves that it hit the roof and then spun around to hit the ceiling with the other side! It also had some wood imbedded on the side from the two-by-four it snapped in the roof frame. This puppy has it all., and I will NOT clean it. [meteorite-list] My Park Forest, IL Experience
Hello List, My wife and I just returned from Park Forest, IL and I have to say that this is truly one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. We found many things spread through out the strewnfield such as heroin baggies, dirty spoons, knives, and a ton of tar covered gravel (and the tar looks a lot like fusion crust). I found two fragments with partial crust and many small fragments for a total of ~15 grams and my wifewon the prize in our house with a 215 gram completely fusion (and dirt) crusted individual that was in a small crater about 8 inches deep. The best part was after six years of hunting by myself (and not ever finding anything) my wife was along to enjoy and prosper in this incredible event. If you would like to see pictures of the 3 largest pieces they are at the bottom of the homepage on my web site. Take Care, Jason and Brandy Phillips www.rocksfromheaven.com
[meteorite-list] Thuathe eBay - meteoritelab - Clarification
Dear list members, As many of you have seen, I have posted several specimens of the Thuathe , Lesotho fall on eBay that Adam, myself and Alan Lang introduced at the Tucson show. I have received several emails asking about another dealer's comments that he heard that the material we received had beensoaked in water. This is absolutely false! It was merely a marketing ploy on his part to get sales. I have heard from customers who have purchased from us and the others and commented that both specimens are EXACTLY alike, same condition, etc. The only difference is that the specimens we have listed do not have the finder's statements. Remember that these are still the same material from the SAME fall. My comment in the eBay description regarding a woman "blessing" a stone with holy water does not refer to any of the specimens we have on eBay. It is simply one of the many exciting stories about the human interaction regarding the fall, similar to the many that have and will come out of the Park Forest fall. I have started them out at $4.00 per gram with a "Buy it Now" at $6.00 per gram. I am merely passing on the savings we received by being the first to receive these and were able to purchase them at a decent price. What you see is what we have left for sale, we will be keeping anything else in our collection. If anyone has any questions or comments, please email me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you and best regards, Greg Hupe IMCA 2185 The Hupe Collection

Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest, most expensive fall in US History
I suspect the mass of the individual stone plays a big part in how warm it gets. Bigger pieces would not warm as quickly or as much because there is more thermal inertia to overcome. It is well documented that the Colby (WI) meteorites (which were recovered quickly after the fall) were deeply cold soaked and began to frost up in the humid evening air (July 4, 1917). Those L6s were 68 and 36 kg, respectively. Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest, most expensive fall in US History
well here it is. small fragments of recent event centering around Park Forest, Illinois that has dropped known 14 kg so far. fall of 3-26-03 occurred just prior to midnight cst. over 80% of approx. 35 reported witnessed occurred in park forest with a clustered band epicenter @ 1 mile NNW of post office. reported falls occurring as far as 8 km from cluster. fall appears to have been close to vertical with slight NNE to SSW bias. stones listed here were collected morning following fall from 77 Winslow site. this fall slammed into street outside home of residents Gale, Diane, and Chris, ricocheted into sided porch, and came to rest just outside front door. the main mass, @456 g in 2 pieces, was acquired by mike farmer for over $2000. site has been scoured by scores of people including steve witte, steve arnold, farmer, and austrian eric. largest known as yet is 426 Indiana Garza stone, @2.4 kg, that shot throught home and bounced around bedroon the stones listed here, and my other listings are all pristine fragments of Winslow impact. primary and secondary fusion crust is evident on some fragments. anomalous globules and shock fracture veins evident throughout. steve witte informs this is likely LL6 chondrite. there is another listing on ebay that gives chicago tribune account of event in item description. PLEASE NOTE: conclusions drawn above from empirical evidence. i have not however actually seen 7 of reported stones including Garza, Jones and Mullen. these stones represent over 6 kg of reported amount. one of these will certainly eventually find residence at Adler or Field. these and other listings GUARANTEED 100% authentic and specific to Winslow (park forest street name, not AZ) site.
