[meteorite-list] Meteorites of the AMM
Hello list, in a booklet I found a leaflet of the American Meteorite Museum printed in 1946/47. Here Dr.H.H.Nininger tells his visitors what they can expect to see : Among many others - 22 famous meteorites; but he does not mention the names of these meteorites and I don't have the answers myself, so I thought it might be funny/interesting - as a kind of test/challenge for some of you - to name those meteorites. Here are the descriptions of the meteorites you could see in 1946/47 visiting the AMM: 1. A meteorite that fell through a house roof in Missouri during World War I. 2. A portion of another that fell through a barn in Wisconsin five years earlier. 3. Still another that crashed through a bedroom where two children were asleep. 4. The only gold-bearing meteorite in America. 5. Diamonds in meteorites. 6. The largest mass ever found in connection with the world's greatest meteorite crater. 7. A meteorite that was excavated in an encient ruin of the cliff-dwellers. It was found wrapped in feather cloth and enclosed in a stone cyst. 8. The world's largest known shower of stony meteoritesin Texas. 9. Stones from a shower which almost broke up a burial service near Denver, Colo., in 1924. 10. Portions of recent fallsone as late as August, 1946. 11. 2000 stones which fell near Holbrook, Arizona, in 1912. 12. An implement fashioned from a meteorite by a Mexican blacksmith. 13. An Indian axe made from a meteorite found in a ruin in New Mexico. 14. The only known copper meteorite in the world. 15. A group of meteorite hammer-stones from Central Mexico. 16. Two of the largest stony meteorites ever discovered. 17. A meteorite that was found doing service as a deadman in a fence on a ranch in Texas. 18. Another one which did similar service in Kansas. 19. A meteorite which served as an anvil on a Mexican hacienda for 25 years. 20. A meteorite which served as a weight in a pork barrel for 23 years. 21. Another which was used on a kraut barrel for 23 years. 22. Several tons of meteorites gathered from the vicinity of the famous Arizona crater. Hi Ed, It's a scam. I'll bet they ask for your user name, password, bank account number, social security number, etc. It's an identify theft scam. Ebay will NEVER ask for these.I just received one of these "notices" the other day and then notified the real ebay. Check your "propeties" from the email and you'll see it's from overseas somewhere. Hello Stefen and List, I agree, the metal-rich diogenite (NWA 1827 provisional) is probably the same as your NWA 1882 and was submitted as a mesosiderite. This is what happens when a heterogeneous stone is studied and not all the petrologic boundaries are crossed, no fault of the scientists. That is why there is such a thing as provisional status so that the NomCom can sort out differences in classifications and hopefully come up with the correct one. Just to keep the record straight, we have no interest in the metal-rich diogenite and have never marketed it as such. Since the metal-rich diogenite was confused with one of three of our different mesosiderites we are somewhat aware of what is happening so we thought we would comment. Re: [meteorite-list] Metal-rich Diogenite/Mesosiderite
Hi Tom. NomCom is short for Nomenclature Committee. They are a group of mainly scientists who oversee the naming of new meteorites for example NWA or Park Forest. A meteorite is not official until this committee reviews data gathered for the suspected meteorite, vote on it and provide a name thus the term nomenclature. They are also responsible for publishing the Meteoritical Bulletin. Re: [meteorite-list] New Article About Alabama Superbolide of Dec.5, 1999
In the latest issue of Eos (American Geophysical Union), there is a detailed article about about fireballs (bolides) seen all across Alabama on Dec. 5, 1999. It is: King, D. T., and Petruny, L. W., 2003, The Trans-Alabama Superbolide of 5 December 1999.Eos, vol.84, no. 27, p. 253, 257 (July 1003) I just obtained a copy of the article. It is interesting because a DOD satellite also observed this fireball. The DOD measurements of the flight path differed from the ground observations by about 90 degrees, just like with Park Forest. The author concluded that the DOD measurements were wrong, but like Park Forest, it is probably just an observing effect. The article also mentioned that three adjacent ground fires occurred at about the same time as the fireball passage. No meteorites were found at the burn sites. The author surmised the fireball was the cause of the fires due to an electrical discharge was created by the fireball's ionized wake. However, checking the lightning data for the area showed no discarges had occurred. Ron Baalke __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] New Article About Alabama Superbolide of Dec.5, 1999
Greetings Ron list, My brother and myself investigated this occurance. After speaking with numerous eyewitnesses we narrowed it down to ~3x12 mile swath whereby the onlookers heard the tell tale thunderous rumblefollowed by a swishing/sizzling sound. One husband and wife heard small raps, like pellets clanking on thier roof and in their guttering. Still we found nothing. They also told us that it rained a day or two after thebolide, which makes me believe that maybe it was a variety of carbonaceous, like Tagish Lake, that rained down that day in Dec. 1999, rendering the material into space-mud? ---Shaw - Original Message - From: Ron Baalke To: Meteorite Mailing List Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 2:56 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] New Article About Alabama Superbolide of Dec.5, 1999 In the latest issue of Eos (American Geophysical Union), there is a detailed article about about fireballs (bolides) seen all across Alabama on Dec. 5, 1999. It is: King, D. T., and Petruny, L. W., 2003, The Trans-Alabama Superbolide of 5 December 1999.Eos, vol.84, no. 27, p. 253, 257 (July 1003) I just obtained a copy of the article. It is interesting because a DODsatellite also observed this fireball. The DOD measurements of the flightpath differed from the ground observations by about 90 degrees, just likewith Park Forest. The author concluded that the DOD measurements were wrong, but like Park Forest, it is probably just an observing effect. The article also mentioned that three adjacent ground fires occurred at aboutthe same time as the fireball passage. No meteorites were found at the burn sites. The author surmised the fireball was the cause of the fires due to an electrical discharge was created by the fireball's ionized wake. However, checking the lightning data for the area showed no discarges had occurred. Ron Baalke __Meteorite-list mailing list[EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites, Angra dos Reis.
Hello Everyone, Someone correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Angra dos Reis the meteorite that a certain dealer from the US tried to steal a few years ago, down in South America. -Walter --www.branchmeteorites.comWalter Branch, Ph.D.Branch MeteoritesPO Box 60492Savannah, GA 31420 - Original Message - From: LABENNE METEORITES To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 3:41 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorites, Angra dos Reis. Re: [meteorite-list] IMCA LOGO / E Bay
Tom, You inserted a link, not the logo. You will need to revise your auction and put the proper HTML string in place. Be careful to to violate Ebays size limit on logos. You will also have to upload the corresponding GIF or JPEG that goes with the logo. If it is not uploaded to whatever image manager you are using to store your image it will not show up. That is why the red X is showingyou have referenced an image that it can not find. If you need more help contact me directly.
