You know, I have seen some pretty low and dirty shots on this list over the past few years but this is about the worst form of self promoting and My meteorites are better than your meteorites that I have ever seen. For new list members the pellisons have been several years trying to get people to pay outragous prices for their meteorites and try and convince people that they are the only legitimate dealers in the Sahara. Just desperately trying to find a way to convince people to overpay for their meteorites. I guess that since you came up with this ludicrous idea that poor business must have recently taken a turn for the worse. But use just a half retarded minimal grade four intelligence and think about what a potential terrorist would think if he actually did decide to raise money in eastern morocco. Would you choose meteorites where there is a close knit group of people worlwide wide and a lot of effort would be required to liquidate the stuff or choose fossils with a thousand times larger market and easier time to liquidate the goods (As well as get supply). There is certainly easier ways to raise millions of dollars than by trading in meteorites. But just look at where the money is going. A very large part of the proceeds of meteorites goes directly into the local economy. You can see where the money is going. Locals buy cars, build houses and such. One of the nomads that i work with is sending a grandaughter to a good school (Even though he cant read himself - he gets his grandaughter to count money for him because he cant do so himself as he never spent a day in school in his life). You would be hard pressed to go anywhere in the world and see a probuct so bennefiting the local population as what meteorites do to the finders and local population in the Sahara. Compare that to when the pellisons go search for meteorites by themselves in the desert, bypassing the local population, illegally exporting their meteorites from the sahara (Unlike the NWA sellers you dont see export permits on the pellison meteorites) and the only locals who benefit from pellison meteorites are bribes to local government officials and the state sponcered oil ompany (Assuming they dont bring their own fuel). There is a reason why meteorite dealers like myself, Erich Haiderer, farmer, Labbennes, Cottingham, Strope, Ivan and others are selling tens of thousnads of dollars worth of desert meteorites and the pellisons are stuck crying in their cheap imported wine complaining like a bunch of cranky old ladies unable to sell anything. Thats because these other dealers are supplying a good product at a reasonably price and give consumers a fair value for their dollar while the pellisons have spent the last few years somehow trying to convince consumers that going in and raping the land dry without leaving anything behind for the local population except police bribes that people should somehow pay 3 to 10 times for for similar rocks that they are selling. Maybe you can explain to everybody why it is not appropriate to hire locals to find meteorites (Or trilobites) for the world market like what goes on with NWA meetorites? Many of the NWA sellers unfortunately dont act in an adult manner on a rare occasion but it is mostly friendly competation and while I buy tons of NWA meteorites and might be able to make more money if I was the only buyer I am not a communist and see no reason why other dealers shouldent be dealing in desert meteorites either. I cant keep up with sales myself and couldent supply the entire (And rapidly expanding) world meteorite market if I was the only dealer anyway. When there is free competation pretty much everybody (Except the pellisons) are reasonably happy and can carry on a business that is legal and supportive of the local economy. But lets discuss the pellison meteorites now. I notice some DAGs on your website. Can you supply us with government documentation proving that those were properly exported from Libya? Of course you cant. Every NWA dealer could supply you with a legal Moroccan export permit though (That would make it extremily difficult for a government to come in the future and claim ownership of the rocks that you buy from them). Maybe you could explain to us all exactly what you did so that the Libyan government is allowing you to export meteorites from the country?. I note that Libya is on the United States and French list of terrorist sponcering nations. I wonder if you had to make some Contribution to the Ben Ladin cause in order to be allowed to hunt with impunity in Libya. You have been to terrorist sponcering Libya on a bunch of occasions. What were you doing in a terrorist sponcering country anyway? And what did you do to be able to export meteorites without getting arrested. [meteorite-list] Tucson show report
Hi everyone, another show report live from Tucson. There is some very nice new meteorites here at the show, no new falls though, so that dissapoints me. Some large sales have already occured, so money is there and it seems that the economy is coming back to life. I have not seen anything nice that the Moroccans brought in, although Ali Hamani has some great stuff as usual. It is nice and warm here, although they are calling for snow in Tucson on tuesday! I'll belive it when I see it. Everyone is just getting started so there is plenty to see here. I am waiting for some of you, so let me know when you are getting here. I say this because it is hard to believe that somebody who knows what they are talking about and would have first hand experience about how the meteorite market in morocco works could come up with such a downright idiotic train of thought. I know that many list members have never been to morocco but if you did go you can easily see where the money is going. These people dont hoard money or ship it to relitives in third world countries. You can easily see where the money is going that the locals get. They tell you. You can see the construction going on on houses where the nomads (Often no longer true nomads) live. They might have a car. And like any parent some of the money is spent so kids can get a better education (Remember - a lot of these people have never been to school and they see the few people with a minimal education getting all of the few available jobs that are available like in banks and things). While many of the sellers are no longer true nomads some regularly travel to the desert on two or three month trips where they have true nomads all over the Sahara looking for meteorites for them (Who get a cut of the money directly also). A very large portion of the money you pay for meteorites goes to the local Saharan economy. The economy in morocco is small. Several hundred thousand dollars spent goes a long way. 80% unemployment is a conservative figure. Up to a decade or so ago $200 was a years wages. Its not like in North America where unemployment rates are based on people actually looking. In Morocco if you want a job you go looking for meteorites or spend a few days in the fossil mountains and dig fossils and then spend a few days trying to sell them. So thats why I say that habibi might not actually know the pellisons. If the pellisons knew what they were talking about they wouldent come up with such a stupid idea that has no intelligence or knowledge whatsoever associated with it. What has there been - $2 million dollars spent on meteorites in the past year or so in morocco?. For terrorists used to smuggling drugs and arms where the market is measured into the multiple billions of dollars getting into the meteorite market wouldent make much intelligent sense. I am sure that there has been something dumber said on this list in the past but I cant think offhand what it could be. This probably takes the cake. It just shows how desperate that the pellisons are and shows how low they are willing to sink in an effort to sell meteorites. There are no terrorists selling meteorites in morocco. There are thousands of poor locals searching for meteorites in the desert. Even at low african wages terrorists woudlent be getting enough money to pay their wages to search. There just plain isnt enough money involved and the searching to labour intensive and time consuming for a terrorist group to consider getting involved. Remember, how much walking do you have to do in arizona or nevada in the desert to find a meteorite? Its no easier in Africa. You just have more people saerching thats all. This is stupid. I can think of half a dozen things that are more likely to support terrorism with higher dollar to risk ratios than meteorites: oil, drugs, weapons, 'blood' diamonds, etc. Meteorites that support terrorism are on a scale of 1-10, about a -2; not big, or even medium-weight money. Annually, I'd hazard a guess that less than a million dollars flows into Africa for buying and selling meteorites. Any arms dealer can put together a one shot package that will net 10 times that in one trip. Can you tell us what indicators you saw that led you to believe that the sale of NWA meteorites is financing terrorists? Habibi and friends in NWA, As a simple collector of meteorites with a lot of NWA material in my collection, I want to say some things that support your efforts and livelihood. First off, do not let the off-based comments of a few jealous dealers upset the trust and good business practices you enjoy with the dealers you are used to working with. These comments made by the Pellisons and Matteo yesterday are intended to upset the people in NWA, and to drive away collectors like myself. We are not that easily influenced or ignorant to the fact that their actual motives are to slow down your business, and to draw attention to themselves in the hope of collectors like myself would want to buy from them instead. I would say there are very few, if any, that would fall for such tactics, and in fact their comments only reinforce the notion that I do not, and will not buy from those who make such comments. The Pellisons as Norbert pointed out yesterday have used similar propaganda on their website that pointed to the lack of documentation for NWA's as a reason not to buy them. As if this lack of documentation made these finds lesser meteorites. I have said this before and I'll say it again, it does not bother me that NWAs are not documented in great detail in all cases. I wish it could be improved, but it certainly does not affect my thinking when purchasing material. We know some of it is documented and that is good for those who want to look for more of the same material in a known location, and for those who want to understand the nature of desert finds and strewnfields. For me, the quantity and quality of material from NWA is excellent, and your folks have made it possible for both scientists and collectors to have a full assortment of material for their study and enjoyment. We as meteorite enthusiasts have had our situation improved greatly by these NWA finds. Now this latest accusation by the Pellisons and supporting comments by one person, Matteo, while minor in number, are slander and a major injustice to the good people in NWA who work hard at finding these stones. Their apology to you and others would be appropriate, but I doubt if they ever would do it. They are not that kind of people I'm afraid. If you can, forget about them and treat them as minor players in all this, because they are minor players. But remember them if and when they come to you and others in NWA looking for material, and be sure to turn them away empty handed. There are enough other dealers who will treat you more properly. Hello Everyone, You know, this just makes me sick. For the Pellissons to try to use terrorism as a marketing ploy is incomprehensible and an insult to free-thinking, free-willed, and just plain Free People everywhere. This is not unlike all those seeking blood money by hawking Columbia related things on ebay only hours after the Shuttle and astronauts were lost. To try to connect NWA meteorites with financing terrorism for the not-so-veiled attempt at self-gain is despicable and at least I have the pleasure of knowing that we in the unofficial meteorite community recognize these people for what they are. I have friends on the ground in the infantry and in the air flying Black Hawks in Afghanistan and Iraq at this moment and and every time I hear of soldiers dying or a helicopter is shot down I wonder if it is someone I know. The home of the Third Infantry Division is just down the road from me (the windows in my house shake when they practice artillery) at Ft. Stewart and helicopters routinely fly in and out of Hunter Army Airfield and I often think of these brave men and women who literally risk their most precious belonging for what little pay they get. Then comes along the Pellissons who essentially make at mockery of what my friends are fighting for their own financial gain. News Release: 2004-048 February 1, 2004 Mars Rover Spirit Restored to Health NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit is healthy again, the result of recovery work by mission engineers since the robot developed computer-memory and communications problems 10 days ago. We have confirmed that Spirit is booting up normally. Tomorrow we'll be doing some preventive maintenance, Dr. Mark Adler, mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., said Sunday morning. Spirit's twin, Opportunity, which drove off its lander platform early Saturday, will be commanded tonight to reach out with its robot arm early Monday, said JPL's Matt Wallace, mission manager. Opportunity will examine the soil in front of it over the next few days with a microscope and with a pair of spectrometer instruments for determining what elements and minerals are present. For Spirit, part of the cure has been deleting thousands of files from the rover's flash memory -- a type of rewritable electronic memory that retains information even when power is off. Many of the deleted files were left over from the seven- month flight from Florida to Mars. Onboard software was having difficulty managing the flash memory, triggering Spirit's computer to reset itself about once an hour. Two days after the problem arose, engineers began using a temporary workaround of sending commands every day to put Spirit into an operations mode that avoided use of flash memory. Now, however, the computer is stable even when operating in the normal mode, which uses the flash memory. To be safe, we want to reformat the flash and start again with a clean slate, Adler said. That reformatting is planned for Monday. It will erase everything stored in the flash file system and install a clean version of the flight software. Today, Spirit is being told to transmit priority data remaining in the flash memory. The information includes data from atmospheric observations made Jan. 16 in coordination with downward-looking observations by the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter. Also today, Spirit will make new observations coordinated with another Mars Express overflight and will run a check of the rover's miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Spirit will resume examination of a rock nicknamed Adirondack later this week and possibly move on to a lighter-colored rock by week's end. Each martian day, or sol lasts about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day. Spirit begins its 30th sol on Mars at 12:44 a.m. Monday, Pacific Standard Time. Opportunity begins its 10th sol on Mars at 1:05 p.m. Monday, PST. The two rovers are halfway around Mars from each other. "...seven-month flight from Florida..." That really has a cozy sound to it! Things haven't changed much since Intro to Remote Sensing class by my favorite electrical engineering professor. My calculator died in the middle of a Simpson's Rule of a black body radiation integral ... for all the incredibly commendable foresight at JPL, we're still all students sometime, I guess. What type of operating system or machine language environment is being used? How many megabytes is the total flash memory's capacity? The other memory's capacity ... how large is that? Inquiring minds would love to know. How does the Rover communication bit rate compare with a vainilla DSL line? Can this one be pinned on Bill Gates III or Linus or Larry Ellison? How did JPL forget to do its housekeeping on the computer ... or ... never test the memory limits (? no way !! ?) ... or ... what sort of contingency might have been missed? NASA !! ... please should tell whatever it can, certainly done incredible things for the world, but no one is perfect and a teflon image wrong - it is counterculture to continuous improvement and transparency. Computer memory problems! NASA seems so much more down to Earth. That's a good thing, in my opinion since it's not too serious, so thankfully, to the reactive software troubleshooters ... no real lasting harm seems been done (except for waiting for the system to come on line and not being productive) and most of the normal world can now relate. So please tell us what really happened ... And I thank the heavens that the system is back up again. Hope the Martian Rovers aren't like all the Earth PC's I've had, they never seems to be the same after the first system crash, even after a complete reformat / reload. That usually worked with Dr. Smith's Mechanical Friend, the Bubble Headed Booby on Lost in Space (The B9 Robot). With all due respect ... and I mean ALL ... if everything continues well, this might be quite humorous to some to imagine the Rover repeatedly rebooting on the surface of Mars, the Martians that were watching that sight probably think we're a real friendly bunch now too. My very very best wishes !!
