RE: [meteorite-list] AD:Not a happy 'Campo'

2004-03-12 Thread mark ford

Bob,

'Methylated Spirits' (at least in the UK) is available in every hardware
store, used to fuel burners and heaters and clean glass etc (not to be
confused with Kerosene), I am not sure what it is called in the US,
maybe 'denatured Alcohol' which is another term for it. If you can get
hold of pure Alcohol (Ethanol would be best, available from Lab supply
firms) this would be far better, but over here we have to pay
extortionate sales Tax on it! - so it's far cheaper to Methylated
Spirits if your going to soak a large piece.

Mark Ford

Hi Mark, I was wondering where i would be able to purchase methylated
spirits to perform this procedure. Thanks for any help you can give.

On that note:

I have tried all sorts of exotic anti-rusting methods but definitely the
best is :

Brush off all the rust with a wire brush, mix some methylated spirits
with Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda) (about 3 Table spoons to 1 pint)
mix and soak the iron in it for at least a couple of weeks. Seems to
halt the oxidization nicely!

Smaller Irons respond better than very large ones, probably because it
takes time for the solution to penetrate.

Hi folks,
I've got a rusting Campo del Cielo iron meteorite here that originally
started off at 1050g but has been on the meteorite equivalent of the
Atkins diet so now weighs closer to 1 kilo. After a wire brushing it
still
looks OK but plan on giving this one some TLC (or sodium hydroxide) if
you want to arrest its condition and make it a fully-functioning member
of your collection. Please make me an offer. I'll return all replies.
Thanks for your intervention ;-)

[meteorite-list] meteorites - money for terrorism

Dear List Members,

as you all remind, the pelisson brothers tried to discredit
all the meteoritic community by associating it to terrorists
and al quaeda suppliers the 31 january (the opening day of Tucson
show)

We did bring them in court for defamation (a kind of felony),
they already have been sentenced the 1st of March for that, they
have a fine of 4200 Euros but we could take off only a few words
in their pages as it was a referee, and express judgement due to
urgency. (Official sentence paper is available by fax for who wants
it)

It's now several years that the Pelisson are trying to discredit
all of us. This time it's really bad, they did use private and
public emails of you guys! Dean Bessey, David Freeman, Michael
Farmer, Bob Verish, Adam Greg Hupe, Labenne, Nelson Oakes and
Habibi, as well as several very well known scientists. They are
using parts out of context of your public and private communications
to try to prove that we all are involved in an active islamic group
... we all know this is completly false and very close to delirium
but they brought that as pieces for their defence in a public court
in France.

Now they are trying to have support of medias, they already sent
press folder (witch is a full crap of 65 pages!) only two newspapers
wrote on that. But the next step could be higher, they will say that
we all finance drugs or worst They already said in a newspaper that
ben Laden in person have been see in Morocco to organise personally
the traffic !!

This is too much, we all have to react or they will ruin the whole
community image including the scientists as they declare to the judge
that some of them are hiding traffics with al quaeda in exchange of
money or rare samples.

As we won the first part at the court of Lyon, now we are in a good
position to bring them front of high justice, it should takes several
months but they will be badly sentenced.

This is a shame that such an interesting hobby involving origin of
our Solar System, Earth and Life with so many scientifical works are
now pointed as network funding horrible things.

Please don't hesitate to react and say what you really think of
these two people.

Hi Ron,
You damn right , Screw E-bay and the J. O.'offs who created the
entity.
You are of no importance to them, and not getting e-mails back, what, are
you crazy? that's not their problem, man. It's your problem as soon as you
BID, regardless of what they tell you about proper complaint channels
and crap. As I posted before, do your homework, and if your must have it
now impulse is running on high current that should be a sign for you to get
off the site and play with the kids, dog, fish, whatever your diversion- Oh
yeah ,don't forget the eternal wife or girlfriend too. E-bay needs to get
involved with taking out some of these scumbags that they in effect let
represent E-bay, especially , what pisses me off the most is the lousy
photo's of the item for sale. In my opinion, if you can't take a descent
photo of the item for auction or Buy It Now then you should pay someone to
do it for you or you can't sell- period ! No Lookie - No Selli. Usually
they advertise, e.g., Look at the beautifull fusion crust, and the 20mm
robins egg chondrules ,WOW , what a great bargain (The WOW 's are a definite
sign of impending tragic loss of cashflow from your person . Stay away
from the non- guaranteed, non - certified authentic, and unclassified and
not- analyzed by a Meteoritics Lab stuff out there. There's some good
guy's on our (I.M.C.A.) list here , and the World Class dealers off- list
might give you a good deal too. For instance, Bob Haag has never done me
wrong in the 12 yrs. that I've known him. I know him from telephone
conversations over the years. Like a lot of us on the East Coast I hope to
someday do the Tucson Show and visit at least 5 fair dealers worthy of the
name fair, in Tucson. Another I have done deals with is Ron Farrell- New
haven, CT.. U.S.A.. He cut me an Imilac slice 3mm thick X 5 in. X 4
in. and it is absolutely immaculate . I've had it now about 11yrs. . He sid
it took time and effort to cut a jewel woth the money I dished out for it-
it's a 123Gram Grade 1 50/50 gorgeous pale green Olivine and Ni-Fe. He did
it like a jeweler would make you a custom piece of jewelry , except it was
just another sale. He was building up his customer base. There are some
mentally ill dealers who tell you that they know for a fact that it's a
meteorite and all, but the impatient greedy bas...rds in fact do not know
diddly squat about what they are trying to sell you, and they get ATITTUDE
in the e-mails that they send you ( if you're lucky to get an e-mail at all)
if the questions get too hard for their SUPER-DEALER EGO'S. If we are
going to be paying dues , I'd like to know the ratio of Collectors (
International Meteorite Collectors Association- not dealers)to dealers.

Hi Adam (and the rest of the list).
As one who was recently 'scammed' by a fraudulent dealer through ebay, I
can only laud the efforts of the IMCA to notify its members of possible
frauds. Although my ebay win was quite small, I discovered---much to my
disappointment---that ebay is quite reluctant to get involved in any form
of dispute. So...as has been said...buyer beware.

If I had read some of this group's, and IMCA's threads, prior to my sale I
would have seen all the warning flags and removed myself from the auction.
Unfortunately, I was traveling and missed the threads. However, because of
many emails from this list and IMCA members I chose to pay the fraudulent
seller via an escrow service so I could have you guys examine the specimen.
He never responded to any of my emails, nor to the escrow service.
Consequently, I never sent any payment.
As a result I have my first negative response which ebay will not consider
removing!

It's interesting to note, however, that the seller (glassface1) has a 100%
negative rating already, but ebay wouldn't respond to my call to take a
closer look at him.

Oh well...it was an inexpensive learning experience--it only cost me my
first negative feedback!

Well, it is sponsored by Art, who owns and operates Meteorite

The IMCA is a Johnny come lately organization, the membership
of which has nothing whatsoever to do with list membership. So, when
you ask the question below, it is WAY off base.

Hi List,

Coincidence ?

The 11th of March (eleventh) 912 days after 9/11 .Would have been 911 days
if not a leap year this year. Didn't these atrocities occur at rush hour
a.m. both locations , don't know the exact times ?

I am not sure you have all seen the news, but a massive terrorist attack has
occurred in Madrid. I always stay near the Atocha train station in Madrid,
and some of the bombs went off there. I was there one week ago! It wakes you
up a little to see that. What is this world coming too, every day nothing
but bombings and terror attacks all over the place. Now I know why Bob Haag
just wants to stay home with his kids.

 Cheers from France,

 Bruno Carine

Roman,
You're greatly misinformed. The IMCA has nothing to do with the Meteorite
Central email list other than some IMCA members are also on the Meteorite
List. They are two separate entities. Meteorite Central's Meteorite List
has been around for about seven years while the IMCA has been in existence
for about two. If you want to shake a finger at someone shake it at the
IMCA members that use the Meteorite List to communicate with each
other. This isn't one of those hard to figure out chicken and the egg
situations...anyone who has been on this List for a while can tell you who
came first.
You might even consider that the IMCA is somewhat of a remora to the Met List.

Best, John Gwilliam

[meteorite-list] North Carolina IMPACT meteor-wrong

2004-03-12 Thread John Sinclair
Mystery object hits home
Sean Olson , STAFF WRITER 03/11/2004
High Point Enterprise

No one was home when the object hit Joanie Stumpf's Westgate Drive home in
north High Point.

Sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a metal, egg-shaped object
fell from the sky, pierced Stumpf's roof and ceiling, smashed a dent into
her hardwood floor and ricocheted more than six feet, breaking a candle
holder on the nearby entertainment center.

My daughter is the one who found it when she came home from school at about
2:30, Stumpf said. She said something fell onto the roof, and I thought it
was a tree and came right home.

Given the circumstances, Stumpf and others thought it could be a piece of a
plane, a meteorite or a piece of space garbage that's fallen to earth after
orbiting the planet's atmosphere.

Objects can fall from space, said Tom English, director of the Cline
Observatory at Guilford Technical Community College. There are thousands of
objects that orbit the earth. As those orbits decay, they can re-enter the
atmosphere. It happens fairly frequently.

It's more likely that the object came from a place closer than a galaxy far,
far away. While it may have been tempting or exciting to think of the object
as a meteorite or piece of space trash, David Butler, a meteorite collector
and member of the Greensboro Astronomy Club, and Roger Joyner, planetarium
curator at the Greensboro Natural Science Center, went to Stumpf's house to
take a look at the object, and both believe that the object was likely
man-made.

It looks like it could have some machine heating, Joyner said as he
pointed to small, bluish spots on the object.

And there are facets or planes where it looks like it's been cut, he
added, pointing to the jagged edges on the surface of the metal.

I'd say it's certainly man-made, Butler said after looking at the object
under a stereoscope.

Joyner theorizes the metal object could have come off a large, industrial
shredder like those used in the nearby Ingleside Composting Yard. The piece
could have been shot off a piece of their equipment, Joyner thinks.

This is probably a piece of their equipment, he said. These striations
look like something a machine makes, and it looks blue from heating. The
more I look at it, the more this looks like it came off of a piece of
machinery.

The facility uses large shredders to mulch trees and other debris into
mulch.

[meteorite-list] NPA 07-1925 Early Nininger paper, Kansas Meteorites

2004-03-12 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: Appleton Post Crescent City: Appleton, Wisconsin Date: Monday Evening, July 20, 1925 Page: 5 KANSAS KNOWN AS LANDING STATION FOR METOERITES Scientist Asserts Middle State Has No Undue Attraction for Stars By Assiciated Press McPherson, Kan. - Kansas has attained a reputation beyond this planet as a landing field for stray meteorites, but that reputation would not stand the test of science, declared Prof. H. H. Nininger of McPherson college, past president of the Lansas Academy of Science, in an address on the subject of meteorites. The belief that Kansas, center of the United States, exerts some unexplained influence on the heavenly wanderes, is without foundation in fact, the professor asserted. A chart of recorded meteoritic falls disclosed that one-fifth of the significant finds in the world have been in Kansas and this has led, according to Professor Nininger, to the popular and failacious impression that this state is peculiarly attractive to meteorites. Two explanations he offered for the apparent monopoly Kansas has maintained: the character fo the soil and the interest aroused in the science. "The finding of stony meteorites." Professor Nininger pointed out, "which have not been seen to fall, may be considered among the rarest events in the annals of meteorites. In only two localities on this continent have such finds occurred in numberd - western Kansas and the coastal plains of Texas. In both of these regions the soil is comparatively free from terrestrial rocks" This, he said, facilititates distinguishing meteoric stones from the earth. A series of witnessed falls of now famous iron and stone meteorites also had kept scientific circles, the public and the press interested in Kansas for long periods, he said, with the result that farmers began to believe that the heavy stones with which they were weighing down fences and roofs were in fact meteorites. Thus were the discoveries multiplied. Scientists have never satifactority acconted for the concentration of iron meteorites in large showers. Professor Niniger told his audience. One theory is that such showers are remnants of dinintegrating comets which have "side-swiped" the earth. This, he said, may explain the huge crater in northest Arizona, devoid of volcanic rock and surrounded by traces of iron meteoritic fals, which geologists believe marks the entrance into the earth of a monster meteorite. Hello list, PDF file is available for this and about 1/4 of the newspapers currently archived on my website, www.meteoritearticles.com. Finding, transcrbing, getting PDF copies and archiving on my website, besides (sometimes) posting them to the list, takes quite a bit of time so my personal archives will always be a lot larger then what is on the website. I have also avoided archiving a lot of the recent newspaper articles on my site to concentrate on the older ones. I do my best to provide a (free) research service in this department and will start making attempts to be able ot share PDF copies from now on. Requests may take a couple days and to be honest it will be a few years before I see myself being of any great service. Mark Bostick

The first six days out was uneventful, but when off Hatteras on Saturday, April 6, she encountered a gale. It set in at 8 a.m. and two hours later it took the form of an electrical storm. the lightning was almost incessant, while deafening peals of thunder followed in quick succession. The storm lasted nearly ten hours. At nightfall the sea was running mountain high. It was found necessary to resort to the use of oil to ride out the hurricane, which had become one of the most furious kind. The Tropic lay at the mercy of the elements all night. At 5 o'clock Sunday morning a remarkable brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the sky, followed by a deafening thunder clap. Immediately the sea became fiery red and then darkened to a hue of blood. This phenomenon was attended by a hissing sound which apparently came from overhead. The noise grew in volume and the illumination swiftly increased. The light became so brilliant that none of the crew could distinguish anything but sparks of fire. A large ball of fire was described overhead. It was as large as a good sized balloon. It came slanting toward the steamer and fell into the sea only a few yards from the vessel, filling the air with flakes of fire. Millions of sparks fell in the wake of the fire ball, illuminated the steamer for several minutes. Capt. Barber believes it was a meteor. For some minutes after the ball had sunk into the sea the faces and eyes of the sailors squinted with pain, and the side of the steamer nearest the fire ball was warm. During the disturbance the barometer vibrated 1-10 each way, indicating that it was of metallic substance. Two hours after the meteor fell the Trople's engines gave out under the strain of buffeting the waves the steamer rolled over into the trough of the she, where she lay helpless for nearly forty-eight hours and the sea breaking over her fore and aft. The weather chains were carried away, the bridge smashed. On Wednesday the storm ceased, and the engines and rails were patched up sufficiently to reach this port. Please visit, www.MeteoriteArticles.com, a free on-line archive of meteor and meteorite articles.

The
more I look at it, the more this looks like it came off of a piece of
 machinery.

The facility uses large shredders to mulch trees and other debris into
 mulch.

[meteorite-list] Amgala updates and auctions ending tonight

2004-03-12 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List members,

Thank you to all who purchased the recent fall called Amgala from us as we
put a tremendous amount of effort into this event. We devoted a great deal
of energy and resources acquiring the largest stockpile of this new
witnessed fall in the world. Our latest shipment consisted of only five
stones so very little more is being found meaning the TKW will probably peak
somewhere around 12 Kg, a very small fall indeed.

Initial microprobe analysis indicates that this is an H classed chondrite.
Additional study is underway because this meteorite is a polymict breccia
and is heterogeneous. We donated another slice that has many clasts to
science so that unique features can be identified soon. It is being studied
collaboratively in two laboratories so that a solid classification will be
assigned. We are paying for these studies so that a classification can be
done quickly rather than wait year.

Some notes of interest:
So far 158 specimens have been located including pieces we did not acquire.
Of the 158 specimens only four are oriented (2.5%)
Only one stone was found displaying Slick-and-Slide
The average sized stone is 63.49 grams
The average amount of crust is ~76%
Only one other fall has been reported in history for the Western Sahara
region
Only a few finds have ever been made in this region (Maybe because of
mine-fields)

These numbers are preliminary and will be updated when cataloging is
complete.

We currently have 43 Amgala meteorite auctions ending tonight on ebay.
These are among the best specimens available, many with 100% crust so check
them out! To see these and another 100 plus auctions check out the link
below:

For those who do not use ebay contact us with your wishes and we will be
pleased to try and satisfy your order.

Thank you for looking and if you are bidding, good luck.

Wishing everybody the best,

Hi

I
think denatured alcohol is higher than 96% ethyl alcohol; however,
the
impurities put into
make it undrinkable (and thus comparatively cheap
since
it isn't taxed like liquor) remind me that I should look into
what
those
impurities ARE. Could be that when denatured alcohol
evaporates,
it
leaves behind the sticky residue of whatever those impurities
happen
to be,
and that might not be so good for meteorites.

I'd be
surprised if isopropanol was any cheaper per gallon than
denatured
alcohol -- always seems pretty expensive at the drugstore. And if
you're
using
either ethanol or isopropanol as a soaking solution with
sodium
hydroxide, you're going to have to add water anyway -- I don't
think
NaOH

English Translation: The Microscopic Properties of Meteorites, Vol. 4,
No. 6 (Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics, Washington, D.C., 1964).

General Characteristics of Meteorites

Exterior form

Meteorites are irregular in shape, being bounded by the surfaces that are produced
by chance in the breaking of massive rock. Thus, they have the form of fragments.
However, their edges are frequently rounded off, and uneven surfaces are smoothed.
Nearly all meteorites are coated with a dark crust, showing evidence, of melting and
sometimes also of fluid flow; this is usually called a fusion crust. The crust, on iron
meteorites has the appearance and characteristics of hammer scale, being, like the
latter, an oxidation layer. The rounding off of meteorites and the formation of crusts
and flow structures are understood as the effects of air resistance and heat formed
by the compression of air when objects enter the atmosphere at planetary velocities.

English Translation: The Microscopic Properties of Meteorites, Vol. 4,
No. 6 (Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics, Washington, D.C., 1964).

Translation by J.A. Wood and E.M. Wood

General Characteristics of Meteorites

Textures

Several different coarse textures or structures are observed in meteorites.
Many irons have no structure. They consist of a single crystal (e.g., Braunau)
or a pattern of oriented crystals (Hraschina, Toluca). Others are granular
(Zacatecas, Santa Rosa). The meteorites that are transitional between irons
and stones often have a porphyritic appearance, with the silicate grains and
crystals apparently floating in a groundmass of iron (e.g., the mass discovered
by Pallas at Krasnojarsk).

Some stony-irons contain numerous silicate grains in a delicate iron network
(Hainholz). Some irons have the character of a breccia, enclosing silicate rock
fragments (Netschaevo, Copiapo). Breccias of gray fragments cemented together
by a darker groundmass are common among the stony meteorites (Shytal, St. Mesmin,
Pulsora). Occasionally this structure is indistinct (Juvinas), and only an alter-
nation between coarse-grained and fine-grained areas can be observed.

The groundmass between fragments is occasionally black and semivitreous; it shows
traces or distinct evidence of fluid flow, as can be seen in sections of Orvinio
and Chantonnay. All gradations exist between obviously brecciated structures and
homogeneous rock; in section, the groundmasses of these may show only as fine,
dark lines running in disarray, or as areas with a cloudy texture or a marbled
appearance. Haidinger has called attention to these brecciated and tuffaceous
structures.

to use Gibeon iron due to its tight structure and high nickel

Hello Peter and List

I have several knifes made with iron meteorite in the blade and have showed

These knifes are made with iron meteorite and forge with tool steel on the
cutting edge, meteorite iron only knifes will not hold an edge and will
rust.
There made by a great Swedish knife craftsman, A. Andersson, one of the top
knife makers around, you can see for yourself his work with knifes is great.
The meteorite knifes I have are with Campo, Chinga. and a Odessa come soon,
all made with a exploding patter Damascus steel cutting edge and very sharp.
He's known for his Exploding patter.

how
bad

1.
methanol (as Rosie pointed out) -- shouldn't be too bad, given that
it's
just
wood alcohol.
2.ethyl acetate

[meteorite-list] VCI Emitter Pre-Sale Rust Prevention

2004-03-12 Thread RYAN PAWELSKI
Start preparing your meteorite displays and containers for the humidity around the
corner.

Hi List..

I am currently taking pre-orders for VCI Emitters. VCI's (vapor corrosion inhibitors)
emitters give off vapors which deposit a molecular layer of corrosion protection on
all exposed metal surfaces of your specimens. Each emitter protects one cubic foot of
enclosed space for up to two years. These emitters are especially nice for protecting
H-chondrites, irons, pallasites, and mesosiderites. VCI emitters are FDA and USDA
approved, non-toxic, safe to handle, and give off very little to no scent when the
enclosed space is open for specimen removal. The best thing is..the layer of
protection on each specimen will NOT be immediately disturbed while the protection
area is open. As soon as you re-close the space the VCI's being emitted will vaporize
within the enclosed space and replenish the protection on the surfaces of your
iron-bearing meteorites. I have been using these emitters in each of my displays for
over 6 months and they seem to be working very nicely. Each emitter will be US$4.75,
postage included. However, actual international postage may be necessary. Please email
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the quantity that you would be interested in purchasing. I only
have about 6 of these currently remaining on a first come, first served basis; all
other requests will be put on a pre-order to be filled within the next week or so.
Once I receive the emitters, I will email you with your total and payment info. I will
be accepting cash (at your own risk), money order, personal check, and Paypal (to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). Thank You.

a.m. both locations , don't know the exact times ?

I am not sure you have all seen the news, but a massive terrorist attack has
occurred in Madrid. I always stay near the Atocha train station in Madrid,
and some of the bombs went off there. I was there one week ago! It wakes you
up a little to see that. What is this world coming too, every day nothing
but bombings and terror attacks all over the place. Now I know why Bob Haag
just wants to stay home with his kids.

So using 96% Ethanol is much safer and much more fun...

HiHoward, et. al.,

Most Pure ethanol still has
4% water. Why not use 99%isopropanol,

for the money probably the best
buy.

Ithink denatured alcohol is higher than 96%
ethyl alcohol; however,the

impurities put
into make it undrinkable
(and thus comparativelycheap

since it isn't taxed like liquor) remind me that
I should look intowhat

those impurities ARE. Could be that when denatured
alcoholevaporates,

itleaves behind the sticky residue of whatever
those impuritieshappen

tobe, and that might not be so good for meteorites.

I'dbe surprised if isopropanol was any cheaper
per gallon thandenatured

alcohol -- always seems pretty expensive at the
drugstore. And ifyou're

using either ethanol or isopropanol as a soaking
solution withsodium

hydroxide, you're going to have to add water anyway
-- I don'tthink

NaOHis very
soluble in either one.

RE: [meteorite-list] Alcohol denaturing agents

2004-03-12 Thread Maria Haas
Hi Rob and List,

According to Bob Haag's Field Guide of Meteorites, 12th Anniversary Edition,
1997 [Thanks Roman Jurasik!], Bob cut his Pena Blanca Springs, Texas
(Ca-poor aubrite) with ...kerosene as a lubricant, in order to preserve the
rare, water-soluble minerals inside (Pg. 27, #69).

Yes, there is a question of damage as well as how do you now clean the
meteorite of the kerosene?

Regards,
Maria

Hi All,

I did a little poking around on line and I was surprised by the variety
of denaturing agents that are used to render ethanol undrinkable.
Perhaps someone with more chemistry knowledge can assess how
bad any of the following might be to meteorites:
1. methanol (as Rosie pointed out) -- shouldn't be too bad, given that it's
just wood alcohol.
2. ethyl acetate
3. kerosene
4. gasoline
5. benzene
6. methyl isobutyl ketone
7. acetone
8. diethyl phthalate
9. crotonaldehyde
10. brucine sulfate
There are others, but these are the most common ones. --Rob

Having done museum conservation, I would say acetone would be safe to
meteorites.
