Aziz Habibi recently? Back in April, I was asking him about purchasing one of his Amgala individuals. After we talked a little about what I could afford, he said he would send me a representative rock, and we could discuss the price once I received it. It's now late July, and no Amgala yet. I don't want him to think I'm stiffing him for his meteorite, but I'm somewhat concerned. Is he well and safe? Tracy Latimer _ Is your PC infected? Hi Gang: I think this was discussed before but I don't remember the outcome. I frequently have occasion to touch my meteorite specimens (to catalog them, look at them under a microscope, show them to newbies, etc.) I am concerned that the oil, salt, etc. from my hands will in some way damage them or begin to deteriorate them. RE: [meteorite-list] Handling Meteorties
Hi Anita, Depends on what specimens you are touching. Irons and slices should defiantly be handled with gloves, (those white cotton handling gloves like jewelers use are good), if you can get used to gloves, then wear them every time! But my opinion is to certainly wear gloves for Irons and slices and for all others handle them by the fusion crust only and certainly try not to touch freshly cut surfaces. To clean them or not to clean them, that is ... tricky. Well you could use a gentle wash over with pure alcohol (to remove grease and salts), again depends on the material, Irons can be washed with alcohol then some light gun oil wiped over the surface to protect it, but avoid oil on OC's etc if poss, because it can stain the matrix. Hope that helps! It's nearly impossible to find but it's one of the most important book about meteorites. It's the first to describe precisely what a strewnfield is and is a model of serious study of meteorite fall. Bonjour Pierre, hello List, Even though I cannot direct you to Biot's important contribution to the world of meteorites, you might be interested in an Invited Review in Meteoritics that shows both the map of the L'Aigle area as drawn by Citizen Marais (p. 571) and the original map by Jean-Baptiste Biot (p. 573): U.B. Marvin (1996) Invited Review: E.F.F. Chladni (1756-1827) and the origins of modern meteorite research (Meteoritics 31-5, 1996, 545-588). Biot even included a scale, lacking in Marais' map. Biot's map also shows the strewn field as a real closed ellipse, whereas Marais' strewn field outlines look a bit bulgy , almost like a ballonn not fully inflated. Hello List, Here (down) is the copy a message I was trying to send (without success) during this afternoon. Trying again...Hope it works now. In the meantime, I well read (through the list) more replies to Pierre-Marie (Eric, Bernd). So if I can help... Cheers, Zelimir - Hi Pierre-Marie, Jörn, Steve, List, I have a photocopy of the following document: Relation d'un voyage fait dans le Département de l'Orne, pour constater la réalité d'un météore observé à l'Aigle le 6 floréal an 11 Par J.-B. BIOT (lu à la classe des Sciences mathématiques et physiques de l'Institut National, le 29 messidor an 11) Document Imprimé par ordre de l'Institut, Paris, Baudouin, imprimeur de l'Institut National, Thermidor, An XI... pp 3-43, including a map entitled carte des lieux sur lesquels a éclaté le météore du 6 floréal an XI aux environs de l'Aigle, Département de l'Orne (the same map that is very often reprinted in many modern treatises). The text (beginning on p 5) is in old French and it is Biot who is speaking, thus reporting in full detail his investigations on the field, a few days after the famous fall was observed... From the format and the way it was printed, this could well be a copy of an article (= report) that appeared in an old issue of Annales de Physique . This is easy to check and I can do it readily but do not have my data on hand by now. It is obviously a detailed report written by Biot and read (as it was the use) by a reporter to the Academy. In other words, this is not a book as such but the detailed report is probably very complete. This copy comes from a local library at l'Aigle and was kindly provided to me by a library responsible, through a local friend. However, if it comes from The Annales, I guess it can be also found easily alsewhere, possibly also in the US. In case, the Annales de Physiques are available at the library of my university here. I don't know if this could help you Pierre-Marie (or anyone else) but I will be happy to provide you of a copy of my copy in due time, in case you need this. Let me know off list and we can make arrangements. Best wishes, Zelimir Prof. Zelimir Gabelica Université de Haute Alsace ENSCMu, Lab. GSEC, 3, Rue A. [meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rovers Update - July 26, 2004
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Investigates Wooly Patch - sol 194-197, July 26, 2004 On sol 194, Spirit took a large microscopic imager mosaic, consisting of 34 images at multiple positions, of a target called Sabre on an outcrop rock called Wooly Patch. This was followed by a two-hour reading by the Mössbauer spectrometer and an overnight, seven-hour reading by the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer. On sol 195, the rock abrasion tool dug a surprisingly deep hole in only two hours of grinding. The rock appears to be softer than what scientists and engineers have seen previously in Gusev Crater. The alpha particle X-ray spectrometer was placed in the rock abrasion tool hole at Sabre. However, due to uncertainties in how long the arm and grinding operations take, the sequence was terminated a few minutes too early and a planned overnight alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration did not take place. Spirit recovered the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer integration in the sol 196 plan. The sol began with a microscopic imager mosaic of the rock abrasion tool hole. The alpha particle X-ray spectrometer was put back in position in the hole, and reading lasting more than six hours was successfully performed, starting at about 4 a.m. Gusev time on sol 197. The work on Sabre was completed with a very long, 21-hour Mössbauer integration, which was expected to be completed the morning of sol 198 (July 24). Before the integration was started on sol 197, a microscopic imager mosaic was taken of Mammoth, the next rock abrasion tool target on Wooly Patch. OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Opportunity Lives High off the Hog - sol 170-173, July 26, 2004 Opportunity continued its exploration of Endurance Crater the past five sols, and is now roughly 11 meters (about 36 feet) into the crater. The only drive during this period was on sol 171, when the rover turned around, backed down across the slope, then turned towards a feature called Razorback. Razorback is a vertical fracture in the local bedrock that may contain sediment deposits with clues about the water history in this area. The team's near-term plan is to follow Razorback farther down into the crater, at least another 7 meters (about 23 feet). Slopes at Opportunity's present location and immediately downward are in the 15- to 20-degree range, which is a comfortable range for driving. Despite the gentler slopes, the slip is still difficult to predict, as evidenced by the sol 171 drive. In that series of maneuvers, the rover slipped roughly 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) more than expected. Opportunity ended up farther downslope than desired, with what appears to be a broken piece of Razorback within arm's reach. The decision was made to stay put and use the suite of science instruments on sols 173 and 174 to see if this rock, dubbed Arnold Ziffel (after a pig on the TV series, Green Acres), was different from the surrounding bedrock. A minor concern about a temperature sensor on the rock abrasion tool that is functioning intermittently has been resolved. This sensor is used to determine the starting temperature of the tool's motors, which in turn is used to set motor control parameters. The rock abrasion tool team plans to use a nearby temperature sensor on the arm turret for the same purpose and is not expecting the loss of this temperature sensor to affect the rover's ability to use the tool. Sol Highlights: 170 - Used panoramic camera to image Razorback and Flatland (a clean patch of bedrock nearby). 171 - Drive of 3.7 meters (about 12 feet). Total odometry is now 1,478 meters (just over nine-tenths of a mile). Used the miniature thermal emission spectrometer to analyze some nearby geologic features. Took a 360-degree navigation camera mosaic. 172 - Used the panoramic camera and miniature thermal emission spectrometer instruments to image the solar panels and the miniature thermal emission spectrometer instrument's calibration target as part of a continuing evaluation of dust accumulation. Turned on the rover inertial measurement unit during the afternoon Odyssey communication-relay pass as an experiment in support of our teach your dog new tricks campaign. If the inertial measurement unit does not adversely affect the communication, the team may be able to turn the rover during the communication relay sessions to increase the data return. 173 - Took a two-by-two microscopic imager mosaic of Arnold Ziffel, to be used on sol 174 (ending on July 21) for more accurate placement of the Mössbauer and alpha particle X-ray spectrometer instruments. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Probe To 'Look Inside' Asteroids
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3926805.stm Probe to 'look inside' asteroids By Paul Rincon BBC News July 26, 2004 A new space mission concept unveiled at a Paris conference aims to look inside asteroids to reveal how they are made. Deep Interior would use radar to probe the origin and evolution of two near-Earth objects less than 1km across. The mission, which could launch some time later this decade, would also give clues to how the planets evolved. The perceived threat of asteroids colliding with our planet has renewed interest in space missions to understand these mysterious bodies. Different targets Deep Interior would use two 30m-long radar antennas to build up a picture of the structure of the asteroids, including compositional boundaries and faults, and its topography. This should show whether the asteroids are solid all the way through or are essentially floating piles of rubble. It is intended to rendezvous with two asteroids which are each under 1km in size: Nyx and 1999 ND43. Nyx is a so-called V-type asteroid, containing stony irons, chondrites and pyroxene. The other target, 1999 ND43, is not well understood. The asteroids have partially been chosen because they are easy to reach. The probe would also carry a radio tomography instrument - to examine electromagnetic properties - and two colour cameras. Earth alert A proposal for the project, described here at the Committee on Space Research (Cospar) scientific assembly, was submitted to Nasa two weeks ago. The scientists behind the concept hope that, if accepted, the probe could launch as early as 2009. An asteroid mission concept - called Don Quijote was recently given priority over five other potential asteroid projects by the European Space Agency. The mission is designed to help scientists understand how an asteroid on a collision course with Earth might be destroyed or deflected. This mission would involve two spacecraft - Sancho and Hidalgo - launched on different trajectories to the same asteroid. Sancho would arrive first and orbit from a safe distance. It would then measure the effects as Hidalgo is sent crashing into the asteroid's surface. Nasa has a similar mission - Deep Impact - which will blow a hole in the comet Tempel 1 and measure the effects. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
