Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites in Thin Section

2005-04-19 Thread michel CN
Hello list
At last I received my copy.
Marvin showed me a draft in Denver last year, I was astonished by Marvin's
work. We spend some hours together talking about it and I remember Marvin
telling me: I just wanted to make a simple book about Thin Sections,
covering as many classes as possible, I thought I could make it in a couple
of weeks, but some months later I was still working on it !

Then I was able to fill my order in Tucson.
I join Peter's comment about this MAJOR Book.
TKS again to D.S.Lauretta and to Marvin Killgore.
After Marvin's book about his collection of meteorite, a book that any
collector MUST have, this TS book is new in its category and is already
another MUST.

Almost all classes are represented with high quality photos.
A perfect book.
Best regards
Michel FRANCO

Then chondrules in every shape and form. A chapter on shock and Finally a
chapter on inclusions. Just a photo filled book with short explanations on
what the different things are and how they got there. Maybe photos with
reflected light and cross polarized light of each different thing?
I know some of you don't need such a book and know all this, well that's
great, maybe you should write it! : ) But I would guess most of us could
use a book like this. It would save us all from those what is this inclusion

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Has Wheel Trouble

2005-04-19 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7284

Mars rover Opportunity has wheel trouble
Kelly Young
New Scientist
April 19, 2005

The Mars rover Opportunity has lost the ability to steer one of its
wheels. While the vehicle can still move, the failure may make it harder
to study rocks up close.

The rover has six wheels aligned in two rows and each of the four corner
wheels has its own steering mechanism. The problem is with the front
right wheel, which can still roll but is now stuck at a 7° inward angle.
NASA rover project manager Jim Erickson says it is like a car losing its
power steering.

At this point, with this one actuator failed, it's an inconvenience,
nothing more, says rover chief scientist Steven Squyres. But he adds
that the failure is a reminder that the rovers will not run forever and
that we should continue to get every bit of science out of these that
we can.

On 13 April, the rover was travelling south from the Voyager crater
when, at the end of one manoeuvre, the front right wheel stopped.
Sometimes this happens when the wheel hits a rock, so ground controllers
reversed the rover and tried again to turn the wheel, but the same
problem occurred.

At that point, engineers decided it was a problem with the wheel's
steering motor and not a physical obstacle. Ground controllers have now
disabled the wheel's ability to steer.

A consequence of the failure is that Opportunity's ability to make very
precise manoeuvres to touch a target sample with its instrument arm will
be reduced. Erickson says Opportunity is likely to stop to sample rock
and soil with the arm before it reaches its current target - a crater
named Erebus.

Software saviour

But the rover should be able to travel without too much trouble. In
February 2005, NASA transmitted a software package to the rovers giving
them the ability to determine how well they are staying on course and to
correct their steering for themselves if they did lose the function of a
wheel.

If the steering on the wheel has permanently failed, the rover could
drive with just three other wheels directing the vehicle. In addition,
the team may opt to steer the rover like a tank, with the three left
wheels turning one way while the three right wheels turn the other.

I have always said my goal is to wear these things out, Erickson says.
But NASA managers still hope to get a lot more from the rovers before
they roll to a final halt. Opportunity and Spirit landed on Mars in
January 2004. The pair were given a further 18-month mission extension
on 5 April 2005.

Spirit is now heading toward an outcrop of bedrock, named Methuselah,
spotted this weekend in photos taken by one of its cameras. We found
the biggest and most spectacular outcrop of bedrock that Spirit has ever
seen in those images, Squyres says.

He says there are fine layers visible in the bedrock, with hints of
interesting structuring. Spirit should arrive at the rock later this week.

[meteorite-list] Low Oxygen Likely Made 'Great Dying' Worse, Greatly Delayed Recovery

2005-04-19 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.uwnews.org/article.asp?articleID=9592

Low oxygen likely made 'Great Dying' worse, greatly delayed recovery
University of Washington
April 14, 2005

CONTACT: Vince Stricherz
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
206-543-2580

The biggest mass extinction in Earth history some 251 million years ago
was preceded by elevated extinction rates before the main event and was
followed by a delayed recovery that lasted for millions of years. New
research by two University of Washington scientists suggests that a
sharp decline in atmospheric oxygen levels was likely a major reason for
both the elevated extinction rates and the very slow recovery.

Earth's land at the time was still massed in a supercontinent called
Pangea, and most of the land above sea level became uninhabitable
because low oxygen made breathing too difficult for most organisms to
survive, said Raymond Huey, a UW biology professor.

What's more, in many cases nearby populations of the same species were
cut off from each other because even low-altitude passes had
insufficient oxygen to allow animals to cross from one valley to the
next. That population fragmentation likely increased the extinction rate
and slowed recovery following the mass extinction, Huey said.

Biologists have previously thought about the physiological consequences
of low oxygen levels during the late Permian period, but not about these
biogeographical ones, he said.

Atmospheric oxygen content, about 21 percent today, was a very rich 30
percent in the early Permian period. However, previous carbon-cycle
modeling by Robert Berner at Yale University has calculated that
atmospheric oxygen began plummeting soon after, reaching about 16
percent at the end of the Permian and bottoming out at less than 12
percent about 10 million years into the Triassic period.

Oxygen dropped from its highest level to its lowest level ever in only
20 million years, which is quite rapid, and animals that once were able
to cross mountain passes quite easily suddenly had their movements
severely restricted, Huey said.

He calculated that when the oxygen level hit 16 percent, breathing at
sea level would have been like trying to breathe at the summit of a
9,200-foot mountain today. By the early Triassic period, sea-level
oxygen content of less than 12 percent would have been the same as it is
today in the thin air at 17,400 feet, higher than any permanent human
habitation. That means even animals at sea level would have been oxygen
challenged.

Huey and UW paleontologist Peter Ward are authors of a paper detailing
the work, published in the April 15 edition of the journal Science. The
work was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation
and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Astrobiology
Institute.

Not only was atmospheric oxygen content dropping at the end of the
Permian, the scientists said, but carbon dioxide levels were rising,
leading to global climate warming.

Declining oxygen and warming temperatures would have been doubly
stressful for late Permian animals, Huey said. As the climate warms,
body temperatures and metabolic rates go up. That means oxygen demand is
going up, so animals would face an increased oxygen demand and a reduced
supply. It would be like forcing athletes to exercise more but giving
them less food. They'd be in trouble.

Ward was lead author of a paper published in Science earlier this year
presenting evidence that extinction rates of land vertebrates were
elevated throughout the late Permian, likely because of climate change,
and culminated in a mass extinction at the end of the Permian. The
event, often called the Great Dying, was the greatest mass extinction
in Earth's history, killing 90 percent of all marine life and nearly
three-quarters of land plants and animals.

Ward said paleontologists had previously assumed that Pangea was not
just a supercontinent but also a superhighway on which species would
have encountered few roadblocks while moving from one place to another.

However, it appears the greatly reduced oxygen actually created
impassable barriers that affected the ability of animals to move and
survive, he said.

If this is true, then I think we have to go back and look at oxygen and
its role in evolution and how different species developed, Ward said.
You can go without food for a couple of weeks. You can go without water
for a few days. How long can you go without oxygen, a couple of minutes?
There's nothing with a greater evolutionary effect than oxygen.

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update #2 - April 18, 2005

2005-04-19 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Gets Through a Rough Week - sol 449-456,
April 18, 2005

Talk about a rough week! Spirit experienced a few software glitches,
command sequencing errors, and particularly tough terrain from April 8
through April 15, 2005. After problems were solved, the rover picked up
and continued exploring the Columbia Hills.

Sol-by-sol summaries:

Sol 449 (April 8, 2005):
Spirit has been attempting to climb steep and rock-strewn slopes in the
Columbia Hills. The rover automatically went into safe mode when the
flight software rebooted on sol 449. Spirit then waited to get commands
from engineers back on Earth.

Sol 450:
An overlooked condition caused more headaches for the beloved Spirit.
When the software rebooted on Sol 449, Spirit lost knowledge of where
its high-gain antenna was pointed. When Spirit tried to use the antenna
during sol 450's uplink without knowing where it was pointed, a fault
condition resulted. Since Spirit could not figure out where to point the
antenna, the rover missed the uplink for the day.

Sol 451:
In order to get out of the fault condition, the rover uplink team came
in on the weekend, and put the spacecraft into safe mode, a status in
which only systems vital to the rover's health operate. The team
commanded Spirit out of the high-gain antenna pointing error and left
Spirit in auto mode. Auto mode occurs when the spacecraft is not running
instructions from the Earth, but rather is taking care of itself.

Sol 452:
Because Spirit was in auto mode, with no sequence of commands running,
Spirit just relaxed and took care of itself on sol 452.

Sol 453:
Before Spirit could drive, the rover needed to take fresh images of the
surrounding terrain. Sol 453 was spent taking these images in
preparation for driving on sol 454.

Sol 454:
Spirit made another attempt to drive uphill. The drive did not go very
well. Spirit slipped quite a bit. Engineers and scientists decided to
try a different tactic for Spirit to climb this hill.

Sol 455:
Rover team scientists and engineers decided that they had tried long
enough to coax Spirit up this hill at this location and that it was time
to try another approach. Instead of going up, Spirit would go down and
cross the slope a bit. They will send Spirit cross slope until an easier
path to the summit is identified.

Sol 456 (April 15, 2005):
This sol's plan consists of a small drive forward to a soil target where
Spirit will use its front wheels to churn up a bit of Mars. The plan is
to then examine this soil with instruments on the robotic arm.

Lots of the references to the term meteorites on Google right now are making
reference to a movie
about A cosmic infection carried by meteorites creates a plague of walking

It got me wondering-- is this based on a true story? Anyone know of any
examples of meteorite
showers causing instances of canabilistic zombism?

At least the one I am selling has been circumcised! It displays a very rare
type of orientation. As it burned through the atmosphere it also rotated on
a second axis and is double ringed.

Re: [meteorite-list] Based on a true story?

2005-04-19 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

Historically, this type of meteorite tends to fall more on Haiti than
anywhere else (i.e., the
Sammadi iron), although a secondary target area seems to be southern Louisiana,
as evidenced by the
Gris Gris chondrite of 1927. The strewn field can usually be located by
establishing the central point
of undead activity.
This variety of meteorite is rarer than other types of movie meteorites
which usually contain
aliens of fairly unpleasant habits. In fact, the reputed fall location in this
movie, the American
West small town, is more usually the site of these monster-containing
meteorites. But, of course, in
the American Mid-West, meteorites containing super heroes are more common,
although stones with
kryptonite inclusions are not unknown there.
So, was anyone on the List retained as the scientific consultant on this
film? I just hate it when
Hollywood won't make use of real world expertise on cannibalistic zombie
meteorites! Maybe it's
because an expert would have told them that most zombis are not cannibalistic
at all.
It's a real shame we couldn't have had this news back on April 1. That
would have been perfect.

It got me wondering-- is this based on a true story? Anyone know of any

Dear Bill and List,

Greg is working on getting shipwreck leases and putting a salvage vessel
together and I am in the process of getting a high tech mobile command
center together. It may sound like BS but it will be a blast and will also
be well documented within the next 60 days. In case you did not know, THing
means Treasure Hunting, something Greg and I have been doing successfully
since the ages of 12 and 13 not to brag. If you have read Western and
Eastern Treasures you have undoubtedly read some of my articles on major
recoveries. My most famous and last article was Shallow Water Cache
written in 1998 in which I recovered a treasure trove including gold coins.
If you do not believe me check it out. I still feel meteorites are the
number one and most elusive treasure there is.

This is the last I will be baited into making responses so take it or leave
it.

Re: [meteorite-list] Re: Very OT: New pope selected

2005-04-19 Thread Michael Farmer
Ok, he is NOT the leader of the whole religious world, but rather the
CATHOLIC world.
He is an important man, but unless you are Catholic, nothing more.
There are over a BILLION Muslims, hundreds of millions of Hindus, and
thousands of other religions.
Fact is, this is a METEORITE LIST.
I do not want to see the fighting, and name calling, what has already
started with this thread.
I respect the pope, and I do not want to read about him on this list.
Otherwise, we may as well discuss the Mormons, Muslims, atheists,
communists, etc etc etc.
Please, leave religion off this list unless it pertains to meteorites.
I think most likely that over 90% of this list would totally agree.
Mike Farmer
Am I wrong?

Make your own sales. Perhaps the buyer saw something he liked, wanted, and
bid it up. It took alot more than one bidder to get that price.
Put your Sikhote on ebay for one cent, and see where it goes, till then,
mind your own business and shut up about my sales, which do not concern you.

Mike,

When I first joined this list I respected your down to earth, get in your face
attitude. I'm not sure about Matteo since I can't understand most of what he
says. If he was serious he'd translate properly. It's always been clear that
you have a need to speak your own mind. Everyone has to respect this concept
since we all have minds too. Can the crap or just join the lunar team.

What part of the pope has nothing to do with meteorites is difficult for you

I am not getting in your face, or anyone else's.
The list rules are clear, the pope is not a meteorite topic.
Simple.
