Hi Tom,
I saw the blog was utter trash within 30 minutes of it's inception.
I went back to check it out one more time - about a week ago - everyone
seemed to be using my name as a sender, as well as other people I could
tell did not write that way - it is a well of garbage - cowards that make
the anti hero on DEADWOOD look like an alter boy.
Unfortunately, leaving this list will likely not protect your
daughter, you or anyone else from such scum.
I refuse to even go there to see what was said. I believe the world
would be a better place if everyone refused to even check it out.
I do not, however, see the link between the blog and this list.
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Don't worry, I am leaving.

2005-04-27 Thread Tom Knudson
Hello List, many have said I should not leave the list due to the blog.
Yesterday I posted a real question, what is the draw back to a .006 blade
and got the answer. That post was copied to the blog, it was not a dumb
question, but someone on the list hates me so much that any post I make
offends him and he has to take it over to the blog. And from the blog;
As long as Ssteve and Tom continue their ways, this blog will be fueled.

What asking serious questions?

Some of the people on the blog can not see why I would get offended that
they drag my daughter into it, maybe they don't have kids, or they just
don't care about theirs? They wrote;

Tom Ks daughter said... Yeah, if Ssteve moves here with Tom K he can bring
his Dell and then Tom and he can share. Also I wont have to pretend to be
interested in dads meteorites; and I can get my home work done on time.

To me that is insulting, for one, they have no right even mentioning my
daughter, second, the blog can be found using google and the whole world can
read this crap and they are making my daughter out to be a selfish phony.
They do not know my daughter, she is one of the most generous people you
could ever know. She does not pretend to anything, she is a very real
person, allot more than the people who hide behind the anonymity of the blog
and insult innocent people. And just a side note, she is the type of student
that gets her homework done while still in school and is one of the top
students in her school.
So, I do need to leave the list, any post I ever make will just give the
bloggers something to talk about and a excuse to put my daughter down. And,
the owner of the blog was asked nicely to take the posts about my daughter
down by a couple of people, but he will not, what a nice guy, a kid hater no

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - April 26, 2005

2005-04-27 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Continuing Southward - sol 438-442, April 26, 2005

Opportunity keeps driving southward and studying new locations despite a
disabled right-front steering motor. Opportunity has driven about 110
meters (361 feet) without use of that motor. The miniature thermal
emission spectrometer began returning good data again. That instrument
was in use when the rover stopped operating for a software reset on sol
440. The rover continues making scientific observations while engineers
diagnose the cause of the reset.

Sol-by-sol summaries:

Sol 438 (April 17, 2005):
Opportunity made remote-sensing observations.

Sol 439:
Opportunity performed a 13-filter panoramic camera observation to study
soil in a trench that was scooped by a wheel when the rover turned to a
good communications orientation after its sol 437 drive. Opportunity
followed the camera observations with an 80-meter (262-foot) drive south.

Sol 440:
The team's plan was for Opportunity to make remote-sensing observations
and then drive farther south. Panoramic camera imaging and some
miniature thermal emission spectrometer observations were successfully
completed. A miniature thermal emission spectrometer observation was
underway when a software reset occurred at approximately 12:45 Mars
local solar time.

Sol 441:
The team prepared a recovery plan responding to the software reset the
sol before. The plan included transmission of data acquired prior to and
during the sol 440 event. Some of this data was returned during a
downlink through the Odyssey orbiter on sol 441. Additional data were
requested for transmission on sol 442 in hopes of pinpointing the cause
of the software reset. Opportunity is otherwise healthy.

Sol 442: The team told Opportunity to perform remote science and study
the surface at its present location while the engineering evaluation
continued.

As of sol 442 (April 22, 2005) Opportunity's odometry total is 5,306
meters (3.30 miles).

[meteorite-list] Meteor Sighting Thrills Canadian Astronomers

2005-04-27 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.cbc.ca/story/science/national/2005/04/26/meteor-mb050426.html

Meteor sighting thrills Prairie astronomers
CBC News (Canada)
April 26, 2005

WINNIPEG - Stargazing experts have been fielding dozens of calls from
people who spotted a massive meteor in the daytime sky over western
Manitoba on Saturday.

Scott Young of the Manitoba Museum's planetarium says calls are coming
in fast and furious from people who saw or heard the meteor, which
passed over Riding Mountain before exploding high over the St. Ambroise
area, north of Portage la Prairie.

About half the people only heard it because of the sonic boom - the
explosion - and people were thinking maybe it's a plane crash or
something like that. They ran outside and would see this cloud of smoke
that was expanding in the upper atmosphere that was visible for tens of
minutes, said Young.

The people who saw it described it as a flaming baseball or a Roman
candle with all sorts of flames and trailing smoke arching across the
sky and then detonating in a final explosion. Sounds like a spectacular
sight.

Astronomers say this type of spectacle doesn't happen often.

We've been trying to find other references to meteors that were bright
enough to be seen in the daytime, and there's a handful throughout all
recorded history in the Prairies at all. There was one in Manitoba maybe
20 years ago, said Young.

It's a very rare kind of thing. Most of the meteors that we see at
night are just little grains of sand, and a really bright one might be
the size of a marble. But this was probably the size of a suitcase.

Young hopes more people will contact him to say where they were and what
direction they were looking when they saw the space rock hurtling
through the sky, so he can pinpoint the exact details of the meteor's path.

What we need to do is get a bunch of reports, put them all together and
that will help us narrow down the search area for looking for pieces,
he said.

Almost certainly this event would have produced at least one sizeable
chunk of meteorite which would have made it to the ground, and we'd like
to find it.

Cassini Captures Swiss-Cheese Look of Saturn Moon

An image of Saturn's small moon, Epimetheus (epp-ee-MEE-thee-
uss), was captured by the Cassini spacecraft in the closest view
ever taken of the pockmarked body.

Epimetheus is irregularly shaped and dotted with soft-edged
craters. The many large, softened craters on Epimetheus indicate
a surface that is several billion years old. The moon shares an
orbit with another of Saturn's small moons, Janus. The two dance
in a planetary tango as they move in almost identical orbits,
exchanging orbits every four years, instead of colliding. Both
play a role in creating intricate waves in Saturn's rings; both
have densities significantly lower than that of solid ice,
suggesting they may be rubble piles held together by gravity.
At 116 kilometers (72 miles) across, Epimetheus is slightly
smaller than Janus at 181 kilometers (113 miles) across. Spectra
of Epimetheus from the Cassini visual infrared mapping
spectrometer indicate that the moon is mostly water ice.

The new Epimetheus image is available at
http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov, http://www.nasa.gov/cassini and
http://ciclops.org.

The images for this false color composite were obtained with the
Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on March 30, 2005, at a
distance of approximately 74,600 kilometers (46,350 miles) from
Epimetheus.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the
European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of
Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for
NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The Cassini
orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and
assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science

Hello Steve, Tom, and List,

that I am very proud of. Why am I telling you that? All these
specimens are gifts, ... gifts from Steve Witt. Yes, the same

Maybe he could have used one of the pieces he so generously
sent me months ago. What I am telling you is that instead of
concentrating on the garbage that is tossed around on this
blog list you had better focus on the positive things that
occur on our List, you had better enjoy the positive contributors

Thank you once again, Steve. I don't have to tell you that these
5 Park Forest pieces will never leave my collection of meteorites!

There is a real trickle-down effect when a collection as wonderful as

Therefore I must also do a little house cleaning in order acquire
pieces from his collection. Below is a link to a few pieces I am

RELEASE: 05-108

NASA'S DEEP IMPACT SPACECRAFT SPOTS ITS QUARRY, STALKING BEGINS

Sixty-nine days before it gets up-close-and-personal with a comet, NASA's Deep
Impact spacecraft successfully photographed its quarry, comet Tempel 1, at a
distance of 39.7 million miles.

The image, the first of many comet portraits it will take over the next 10
weeks,
will aid Deep Impact's navigators, engineers and scientists as they plot their
final trajectory toward an Independence Day encounter.

It is great to get a first glimpse at the comet from our spacecraft, said
Deep
Impact principal investigator, Dr. Michael A'Hearn of the University of
Maryland,
College Park, Md. With daily observations beginning in May, Tempel 1 will
become
noticeably more impressive as we continue to close the gap between spacecraft
and
comet. What is now little more than a few pixels across will evolve by July 4
into
the best, most detailed images of a comet ever taken, he added.

The ball of dirty ice and rock was detected on April 25 by Deep Impact's Medium
Resolution Instrument on the very first attempt. While making the detection,
the
spacecraft's camera saw stars as dim as 11th visual magnitude, more than 100
times
dimmer than a human can see on a clear night.

This is the first of literally thousands of images we will take of Tempel 1
for
both science and navigational purposes, said deputy program manager Keyur
Patel at
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Our goal is to impact a 39
inch
long spacecraft into about a 4 mile wide comet that is bearing down on it at
6.3
miles per second, while both are 83 million miles away from Earth. By finding
the
comet as early and as far away as we did is a definite aid to our navigation.

Deep Impact is comprised of two parts, a flyby spacecraft and a smaller
impactor.
The impactor will be released into the comet's path for a planned high-speed
collision on July 4. The crater produced by the impact could range in size from
the
width of a large house up to the size of a football stadium and from 2 to 14
stories
deep. Ice and dust debris will be ejected from the crater, revealing the
material
beneath.

The Deep Impact spacecraft has four data collectors to observe the effects of
the
collision - a camera and infrared spectrometer comprise the High Resolution
Instrument,
a Medium Resolution Instrument, and a duplicate of that camera on the impactor
(called
the Impactor Targeting Sensor-ITS) that will record the vehicle's final moments
before
it is run over by comet Tempel 1 at a speed of about 23,000 miles per hour.

The overall Deep Impact mission management for this Discovery class program is
conducted
by the University of Maryland. Deep Impact project management is handled by the
Jet
Propulsion Laboratory. The spacecraft was built for NASA by Ball Aerospace
Technologies
Corporation, Boulder, Colo.

Hello List, many have said I should not leave the list due to the blog.
Yesterday I posted a real question, what is the draw back to a .006 blade
and got the answer. That post was copied to the blog, it was not a dumb
question, but someone on the list hates me so much that any post I make
 offends him and he has to take it over to the blog. And from the blog;
As long as Ssteve and Tom continue their ways, this blog will be fueled.

 What asking serious questions?

Some of the people on the blog can not see why I would get offended that
they drag my daughter into it, maybe they don't have kids, or they just
 don't care about theirs? They wrote;

Tom Ks daughter said... Yeah, if Ssteve moves here with Tom K he can bring
his Dell and then Tom and he can share. Also I wont have to pretend to be
interested in dads meteorites; and I can get my home work done on time.

To me that is insulting, for one, they have no right even mentioning my
daughter, second, the blog can be found using google and the whole world
can
read this crap and they are making my daughter out to be a selfish phony.
They do not know my daughter, she is one of the most generous people you
could ever know. She does not pretend to anything, she is a very real
person, allot more than the people who hide behind the anonymity of the
blog
and insult innocent people. And just a side note, she is the type of
student
that gets her homework done while still in school and is one of the top
 students in her school.
So, I do need to leave the list, any post I ever make will just give the
bloggers something to talk about and a excuse to put my daughter down.
And,
the owner of the blog was asked nicely to take the posts about my daughter
down by a couple of people, but he will not, what a nice guy, a kid hater
no
 doubt!

 Thanks, Tom

Greetings Tom, Bernd and List,

Tom, as Bernd's kind word pointed out, there's so many positive
things on this list. Let the other stuff go. As an example of this
I'm including an e-mail I received only five minutes after I
requested a Park Forest slice for sale.

Hello Steve,

I just joined the list IMCA a few months ago. I not
a dealer nor a serious collector. I am into meteorites
mainly for education purpose.

I would not have sent you this reply, if I hadnt read
Bernd post. Its a pleasure to hear that you have given
away meteorites and are now looking for the same
meteorites.

I am sorry to hear this. I have a Park Forest Micro.
Should be the size of a pin head. I got this from
Mr.Steve Arnold. I am not sure if this will fit the
bill as its not a parallel cut nor 3 mm thick. In case

Absolutely,
Steve was the first I met out in PF and the most gracious.
He informed me of the meteorite list regardless of the issues of the PF
sales market. While others kept the list a secret he told me to join the

about one kilo in dozens of fragments.
He shared the excitement and offered info on impact locations.
Thanks Steve, it was a pleasure meeting you in PF

Hello List, many have said I should not leave the list due to the blog.
Yesterday I posted a real question, what is the draw back to a .006 blade
and got the answer. That post was copied to the blog, it was not a dumb
question, but someone on the list hates me so much that any post I make
  offends him and he has to take it over to the blog. And from the blog;
As long as Ssteve and Tom continue their ways, this blog will be
  fueled.

  What asking serious questions?

Some of the people on the blog can not see why I would get offended that
they drag my daughter into it, maybe they don't have kids, or they just
  don't care about theirs? They wrote;

Tom Ks daughter said... Yeah, if Ssteve moves here with Tom K he can
  bring
his Dell and then Tom and he can share.

So, I do need to leave the list, any post I ever make will just give
  the
bloggers something to talk about and a excuse to put my daughter down.
  And,
the owner of the blog was asked nicely to take the posts about my
  daughter
down by a couple of people, but he will not, what a nice guy, a kid hater
  no
  doubt!

  Thanks, Tom

[meteorite-list] Ad- impact melt meteorites

2005-04-27 Thread S. Ralew
Dear List Members,

today I want to introduce some interesting impact melt meteorites. An
outstanding piece is NWA2902, it is for me the most beautiful Impact Melt,
which I had ever in my collection. On most slices you can recognize the
border between two lithologies very well. There are a few amazing slices, at
which the border runs nearly exactly in the center. These are high class
collection pieces at a fair price.

NWA 2899 is another very interesting impact melt. At millimeter-sized iron
inclusions in NWA 2899 are unusual dendritic struktures visible. These
dendrites have their origin probably by a rapid cooling after the impact
event.

These pieces represent what I like at the NWA meteorites, the unusual
pieces. It is breathtaking if you cut stones like this for the first time.
Additionally I offer some slices of typical L impact melts for a reasonable
price.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad: Collection sale.

2005-04-27 Thread fcressy
Hi Mike,

Received the Chiang Khan and Kendleton specimens today. Nice pieces, THANKS.

Looks like I'm getting some unexpected $$$ next week so am window shopping.
I'm curious if the 90 gram Mocs individual is available and how much if so.
Or I'm sort of interested in a nice large display piece of a fresh fall
maybe around a kilo+ in size at the best price/gram. Any candidates
(excluding Gao unless it is of exceptional character)?

Also you might want to look in the Catelogue of Meteorites for the Malotas,
Argentina H4 fall, 1933. Shower of some thousands of stones fell...
very, very litle accounted for in collections. Sounds like a place to check
out next time you're on expedition ;-)

Cheers and thanks again,
Frank

My collection sale is proceeding at a rapid clip. Many items are sold, I
 have hundreds more though.
You may view most of the specimens at the following links.
 http://www.meteoriteguy.com/collection.htm New site

http://www.meteoriteguy.com/collectionold.htm This one has most of the
 pieces on there.

This is for real, I already sold some major items last night. Email me
your
requests, even if you don't see it I may have it.

2005-04-27 Thread Bill Southern
Ok here's my 2 bobs worth...I also am quite new to this list and in the few
short months I have been around I have learned much and found some new
friends! Oh yes and found some very nice specimens to add to my collection.

This list and the blog which I went to for the first time today are not even
in the same league by a long shot! Anyway I am not defending this list as it
speaks for itself, but stick around Tom and ignore the blog.

Remember these people must live with themselves and that is a much harder
task than putting up with their dribble.

Re: [meteorite-list] Franconia Field Trip

2005-04-27 Thread E. L. Jones
Hello Larry, List.
I am coming late to the table but I was looking through those wonderful
photos today. I noticed recent/new vegetation growing from under a
couple of the stones. If these were still in situ, doesn't this suggest
a recent fall? Or a fall within the lifetime of the underlying plant?
Seems to me if a sprout was lying under a stone and had gone under one
side and out another this would indicate not more than one growing
season as a plant will follow the top of an obstruction as it emerges.
Intuitively, the sprout would have had to been in place before the stone
landed atop of it. Ergo-- one growing season, give or take.

Is there a forensic botanist here with more insight or another opinion?

[meteorite-list] AD: Collection sale update.

2005-04-27 Thread Michael Farmer
Well folks, it has been a very busy two days.
I am really doing this, so many people asking if it is true.
Stop asking and start buying.
I have sold a great many pieces, but a complete museum collection worth of
meteorites are still available.
Many people are emailing me with requests, then never answering their
emails. PLEASE, this is a huge sale, if you request it, please reply and let
me know if you want it or not. This is a first come first served sale.
Nearly HALF A MILLION $$$ in meteorites are up for grabs.
Most of these pieces are from museum collections. Most of them are
absolutely impossible to replace or buy elsewhere. Now is the time to get
your hands on the rarest pieces out there.

Many people are also wanting to make payments, I really am not doing that
right now. Paypal offers buyers credit, takes seconds to get, you can pay me
now and use it just like a paypal credit card.
Again, most pieces are visible on these two links:
http://www.meteoriteguy.com/collectionold.htm

http://www.meteoriteguy.com/collection.htm
Of course, I have many more items, so if you don't see it, ask for it.
Enjoy, and beg borrow or steal folks, you all know that this is the largest
entire collection to go up for sale in many years.

[meteorite-list] Rediculous Crater Question

2005-04-27 Thread CalSouth1
Dear List,

Recently while looking at the satellite weather animations, I spotted a large
circle over the four corners region of the U.S. Ariz, Nmex, Utah, Colo.

I could see it on both infra-red and visible photos.and then another
circle within the larger circle which I estimate aro 400 mi in diameter and the
smaller 100 mi in dia. The smaller being in the SouthEast of the larger.

The large circle center is directly over the four corners.

You can see these features on various maps...and they look like impact
craters. Go to the following address and check it out for a few daysit
will
show up...or just check what available maps you have and it still shows up.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/satellite/index.php?wfo=lox

I also contacted USGS and am awaiting their reply.

So, I am just surprised that such a feature is there, and all the years I
have been looking at the satellite maps have never seen it. Also, I do not
know
the geographic elevations, but it appears to be a high mountain ring with a
depression in the center...except for the smaller ring which distorts the
larger.

This could also be a large plateau elevation which might raise other
questionshow did this 400 mi. dia. plateau come to be a 360 deg. feature.

Anyway, just food for thought and appreciate your comments.

John
